5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Sports Bible
Dan Doyle has written an amazing sports bible for everyone from the parents of youngsters approaching sports for the first time, to the parents of talented Division I prospects. Along the way meticulously researched advice and factual examples abound for everyone. As a teacher I loved the clear instructions and the ethics espoused for parents, coaches, and children alike. As a parent I only wish that I could have gotten his invaluable advice twenty years earlier when my children first went through all the issues he expands upon from good/bad coaches to parental input to sportsmanship to balancing numerous sports to, in our case, college advice for the Division III student-athlete and parent. Kudos to Dan Doyle and to this great book- a must read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for sports parents and anyone else
Although the title might suggest that this is book is written solely for parents who love sports, that's far from the truth. This is a really good book for parents who are crazy about sports, but also for those who don't know a basketball from a soccer ball. The book covers all of the basics of being a "sports parent," like how to sign your child up for little league and what type of summer camp to enroll them in.For those parents whose kids get more serious, there's plenty of information and advice on navigating high school sports, college scholarships, etc.But most of all, this is a book about parenting. There's a lot of helpful advice on using a kid's sporting experience to teach him or her about hard work, about success and failure, and about competing hard while still treating people fairly. The book is both a practical how-to guide, but also a rich trove of common sense wisdom on raising good kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for any parent of a potential sports mega star.
Child Athletes need a brand of special care to be the best they can be - and "The Encyclopedia of Sports Parenting" is here to help parents do the best that they can for their young athletes so they get the most they can out of their hobbies. Covering youth sports of all ages - from little league baseball to college football, nothing is left uncovered. Providing advice on encouraging ones children, and giving them the little extra special things they need in their adolescence to do well in youth sports, "The Encyclopedia of Sports Parenting" is essential for any parent of a potential sports mega star. ... Product Description
True Competition: A Guide to Pursuing Excellence in Sport and Society offers a blueprint for maximizing the potential of competition to foster excellence and enjoyment. It provides a novel perspective on competition that challenges traditional beliefs through a research-backed defense that--up until now--has been lacking. With this text, readers will learn the differences between positive and negative competition, and they will discover how to implement change in their organizations, teams, and individual practices.

The authors of this groundbreaking book, who are leading experts in sport psychology, redefine what competition is and should be. Unlike the more typical and often socially destructive form of competition--which they call decompetition--true competition brings out excellence in participants, fosters positive character development, and leads to lasting enjoyment. This socially and psychologically positive perspective on competition challenges Alfie Kohn's No Contest: The Case Against Competition, which has been called the definitive critique of competition. The authors propose that competition itself is not problematic; rather, they question how competition is sometimes envisioned, interpreted, and implemented. They provide suggestions for achieving positive outcomes from competition, including creating challenging yet supportive environments in sport programs and teams, fostering the well-being of athletes, and encouraging athletes to handle various situations.

The research-based text uses a field-guide approach, in which the components of true competition are presented in chapter 3 and then detailed in the following chapters. This approach helps readers understand competition and how it is being used in their own lives. While the book relies heavily on the arena of sports, it also provides many examples of applying this revised understanding of competition in business, education, politics, and other nonsport environments.

To enhance the learning experience, True Competition offers the following features:

  • A scholarly analysis of competition is presented in a clear and engaging writing style, making the provocative concepts easily accessible to any reader.
  • Engaging sidebars give examples of how true competition has been created in various environments to shorten the implementation curve for readers.
  • Q&A sidebars pose practical questions to ponder--just as a parent, coach, or official would--and prepares readers for issues they will confront in the field.
By applying the information presented in this text, students, professionals, and athletes will learn how to maximize the benefits of competition by avoiding decompetition. Not only will they understand how to recognize and respond to positive and negative forms of competition, but they also will gain the tools they need in order to promote true competition in their own worlds. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read if you work in sports or education!
According to David Shields and Brenda Bredemeier, contest situations, whether on the playing field or in the classroom, can lead to two different processes. With guidance, a contest is an opportunity for people to strive together- on opposing sides- to achieve excellence.Your opponent is your partner, bringing their best effort in order to push you to new levels of greatness. However, all too often, contests are filled with "decompetition" (coined by the authors), a process in which opponents strive against each other, and the focus changes to defeating your `enemy' rather than working to become a better athlete (or student, politician, etc). "True Competition" starts by discussing the common misidentification of decompetition as competition, and then elaborates on the differences between true competition and its ugly twin.Included in the book is a field guide, providing signs for coaches and parents that indicate the presence of either competition or decompetition, as well as tips for encouraging competition, a section on character's link to competition and cooperation, and in-depth discussion of the components of true competition and decompetition. This book will be valuable to anyone who works in sports, deals with children, runs a business, or engages in the political arena. We all encounter contests every day, and only by understanding the differences and causes of competition and its sinister counterpart can we begin to work towards "true competition", a process shown to increase productivity, motivation, and character.Yes, it is difficult to suddenly think of competition in a new light, and harder still to accept the addition of yet another word to explain something we thought we understood. But once your brain adjusts you will find that, like Malcolm Gladwell's "The Tipping Point", "True Competition" makes you view the world in a new way, and reexamine ideas you thought you understood.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why We Should Play to Win: A "must read" for coaches, trainers, athletes and parents
Coaches berating officials for seemingly bad calls, parents cursing at coaches, other parents or even their own kids, and the athletes themselves caught cheating, committing acts of violence during games and using performance-enhancing drugs during contests. Is this what winning is all about? Is competition a good thing?

For anyone involved in sports coaching, training, officiating or educating, especially parents of youth athletes, this book is an essential guide to understanding the nature and power of true competition.

Gleaned from years of research and study in the field of competition and character development, the book answers those questions and defines the positive side of competition as it relates to striving for excellence during athletic performances and introduces a new term, decompetition, that explores the characteristics of negative behaviors and attitudes associated with competition that we read about so often in the news.

Authors David Light Shields and Brenda Light Bredemeier present ground-breaking research that defines the elements of true competition as it relates to primarily sports contests but also as it exists in other areas of society such as academics and the business world while debunking the current view that competition is a "bad" thing.

The book is well-structured and easily read starting withthe early chapters that are devoted to briefly defining competition and decompetition as we commonly associate the terms to sports contests. Real-life scenarios are used to illustrate the important concepts that are discussed in the book and a useful field guide section helps to identify the differences in positive competition versus decompetition while later chapters expand on the practical applications of the concepts and research presented in the book that can be used by coaches, trainers, parents and athletes to use true competition to strive for excellence in performance.

4-0 out of 5 stars Redefining the meaning of Competition - A Truly Compelling Read
It is very heartening and freshening to read a book that focuses on the ethical and constructive aspect of competition when there are too many books around that teach you to view competition as life and death situation and suggest that winning by any means is the right approach.

As the world focuses on teaching the new generation, "Everything is fair in ......", the authors successfully demonstrate with clear examples and historical evidence that the competition in sports and life can be ethically pursued and can be a fun experience rather than just a pressure situation. The authors present the case for redefining competition away from the notion of winning at any cost.

The books starts with an interesting first chapter titled : The case Against Competition and creates a compelling background for the rest of the book.

Unlike many Sports Psychology books that provide quick tips and tricks to bring excellence in your game, this book provides a holistic development option that not only builds your competitive abilities but also your traits as a solid, good human being.

Adopting the methods suggested in this book, you can be a true winner, in sports, in work and in life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for musicians, too...
I'm a drummer and have always had some glitches in my performances when I thought the pressure was on.I've read this book once thru and am already thinking differently on the stage.I've read tons of music books on the subject of letting go of the chatter in your head, but this blows them all away with concrete exercises and evaluations to gauge your mental toughness.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must read
if you've decided to open up that can of worms that is sports psych, then you really should read this gem. it is vastly superior to all his other books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mastering the Mental side of sports
This book was given to me a few years ago by one of my coaches. This book is possibly the most helpful book that I have ever read.I am a goalie in ice hockey (15 years old) and have always been regarded as the hardest worker that people have ever seen. But when it came to big games, I clearly wasn't always my sharpest. Many coaches say that sports is 90% mental, but how can you improve your mental skills?Improving mental skills is not very physically demanding, but it does take commitment. Read this book and take this seriously! It could turn around your sports journey, or journey through life.It has for me and it is less than 200 pages!I highly recommend this book for any serious athletes of any age.

5-0 out of 5 stars the bible
suggested to me by a world cup winning athlete who owns and old out of print copy covered in tape to hold it together, this book is brilliant. my career as an elite athlete jumped a number of levels whilst reading it. his more recent book is nothing compared to this. go to your library and photocopy it, no one will sell it to you. it is the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate guide to mental control for sports!
James Loehr's book deserves 10 stars!

After reading many books on sports psychology and not getting anywhere, Mental Toughness Training for Sports guided me down the road to sporting success.

James Loehr explains what happens mentally to athletes during both great and terrible performances. You are then guided along analysing your own performances and gradually you gain more and more control over your mental and ultimately your physical performances.

This book is for the serious athelete, who has the patience to take the necessary steps required for success.

If you feel you are not producing your best in play due to mental obstacles, then this is the book for. It will change your life and give you control you thought only your opponents possessed. ... Read more

Have fun. Try hard. Do your best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book Concept
In my opinion more books like these are needed, because kids need to be encouraged rater than discouraged.I agree with the reviewer below. Also recommended: "Everything You Never Wanted To Know About Your Nonprofit Corporation" by Ms. Cellaneous, The Unknown Attorney--Another book dealing with kids sports clubs but from a legal perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Johnny Hates Sports
Every adult who has anything to do with coaching sports should be made to read this book. Every parent who puts their child into sports should be made to read this book. It is that important a book and the issue of violence in children's sporting events is growing even in light of recent violent episodes that have left a man dead. Far too many adults are pushing their children to succeed so much that the word "fun" has no connection whatsoever to do with playing sports.

5-0 out of 5 stars To the point
Sports is an important topic in many families and schools in the USA and abroad. Engh takes a courageous position and that is to say, we, as parents and amateur coaches have twisted the idea of organized sports competitionand made it into a grueling exercise for its innocent victims: ourchildren. Engh rightly points out that parents and ignorant coaches who usetheir amateur leadership position to wrongly influence our children as towhat fair sportsmanship is all about. Engh points out that"winning" has unfortunately become the Holy Grail of youthcompetition. I'd rather prefer what I heard one Chinese table tennischampion say a few years back, "Winning is temporary, friendship ispermanent." You only have to attend a local sports event or pick up anewspaper to hear about the tragic ways children are exposed to bickeringparents, foul-mouthed opponents, loud mouth fans, unrewarded referees. Enghplaces himself in a vulnerable position to put the spotlighht on the verypeople he is asking to support his organization nationwide: the coaches, schools, youth organizations and parents. In youth sports, the child issupposed to come first, like it was in sandlot baseball and other sports inthe past. But now "the organization" comes first, and corporatesponsors. children in youth sports have become a commodity. I wouldn't besurpised if some youth organizations try to ban his book because it exposessome of the politics, in-fighting and complete insensitivity that exists inyouth sports today. There are many good, sensitive parents and singlepersons who are engaged in helping youth sports. I hope everyone of thembuys a couple dozen of Engh's book and distributes them to their locallibraries. Good luck, Mr. Engh ! Product Description
Though exercise is relatively easy to do, its influence on our physical, psychological, and spiritual well-being is complex. Even those who are aware of its positive effects are sometimes reluctant to begin. Why do some people maintain a regular exercise regimen while others quit after a few weeks? How does exercise influence mental health? If medical, health, fitness, psychology, and athletic professionals are to help their clients, they must understand the issues that surround the psychology of exercise. "Foundations of Exercise Psychology" presents a summary of the information to date on the psychology of exercise and offers lucid suggestions for practice and future research. "Foundations of Exercise Psychology" will help to shape the direction of the field of exercise psychology for many years to come, and it will do much to encourage young professionals to enter the field and to pursue further study. Students moving toward the exercise professions will gain a solid background in key issues surrounding exercise and health and make great strides forward in becoming competent and compassionate practitioners. The contents of the book go well beyond past texts in the field and include some innovative and thought-provoking chapters on little discussed topics in exercise psychology such as the meaning of exercise and the psychological and physical dangers when exercise goes awry. The text spends considerable time exploring the relationship between exercise and personality, self-esteem, self-concept, mood alteration and motivation - concepts and features of being human that are all intimately related. The range of populations examined includes women, children, dependent and habitual exercisers, and participants throughout the life span. ... Read more

Product Description
The first reference to look specifically at how elite athletes are developed

Expert Performance in Sports: Advances in Research on Sport Expertise presents an overview of the critical issues facing researchers who study how athletes reach—and stay at—the pinnacle of their sports. The text will allow you to update your knowledge of sport expertise with the most current research and practical applications for the development of sport expertise in athletes, referees, and judges.

This comprehensive reference reflects both theoretical underpinnings and future directions in the understanding of sport expertise research and is the first book to look specifically at how elite athletes are developed.

Editors Janet L. Starkes and K. Anders Ericsson identify the questions typically asked in the study of sport expertise; they provide a stimulating, scientific debate that addresses the question of whether a general theory of expert performance is achievable; and they conclude with a glimpse of future directions for research on sport expertise.

This new reference answers controversial questions that arise with regard to the training of high-level performers:

• How can you potentially speed up the acquisition process?
• How easy or difficult is it for experts to retain high performance levels as they age?
• How can coaches structure practices to maximize active time and preparation for the next competition?
• What is the role of coaches and mentors who work with elite performers?
• What aspects of performance best reflect expert behaviors in a particular sport—anticipation, perceptual accuracy, decision speed, attention focus, response selection, response consistency, strategy, or others?

With Expert Performance in Sports, you not only can read about sport expertise research but also find out how athletes and coaches benefit the most. "Experts’ Comments" at the end of each chapter present the opinions of two world-class experts, Therese Brisson and Nick Cipriano. These experts’ opinions bridge the gap between the research presented and its practical applications. Dr. Therese Brisson’s academic training is in motor behavior; she also is an Olympic gold medalist, silver medalist, and six-time world champion in ice hockey. Professor Nick Cipriano is both an academic and an international-level wrestling coach. He is a former international-level wrestler and world-renowned coach in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, and he has coached both male and female athletes from the high school level to the Olympic team.

This is a must-have reference that will challenge researchers to identify both their theoretical underpinnings and future directions in their study of how the best excel at sports. ... Read more

Product Description

Out of Bounds is a collection of essays that regards the media representation of professional sports through the lens of cultural studies. Editors Aaron Baker and Todd Boyd contend that the popularity of sports derives not simply from their appeal as leisure entertainment but from their contribution to discussion of larger issues of class, race, gender, and masculinity. Essays in the collection challenge media wisdom about the apolitical nature of sports by examining how they contribute to the contested process of defining social identities. Included within a broad range of works are "'Never Trust a Snake': WWF Wrestling as Masculine Melodrama," (Henry Jenkins), "Mike Tyson and the Perils of Discursive Constraints: Boxing, Race and The Assumption of Guilt" (John Sloop), and "Visible Difference and Flex Appeal: The Body, Sex, Sexuality, and Race in the Pumping Iron Films" (Christine Holmlund).

This book provides a through tour of the history of women in sports, not individuals, but rather the policys of women playing sports. Topics such as who should control the sport (and the women!), promotional and commercial sports vs. for-fitness-only sports, and the debates about if sports made men 'manly' then would they make women 'manly' too?
Many readers will find the abundance of historical information hard to read, but I highly suggest making the effort if you want a good understanding of just how far women have had to go to play the games they love!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative and enlightening!
This book is among the ones I keep returning to in my work as a writer and scholar on women's sports. Cahn does an excellent job of not only telling the history of women's sports in the twentieth century, but also connecting that history to the broader social trends and struggles over issues such as gender roles, race, and sexuality. Cahn's research is of the highest quality, and many of the endnotes contain additional interesting information.

I highly recommend this book to anyone concerned with gender equity or feminism, especially as regards sports.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational but not psychology
This book is intended to be an inspirational presentation by an athletic coach or trainer, not a psychology book.So the reader needs to be a little forgiving at times about assertions with no citations for claims.I actually found the book useful, and I am sure the author can motivate an athlete or team.

5-0 out of 5 stars Football Skills Unlimited!!!
Unlimited Sports Success does not claim to make an amateur into a professional, there are too many other variants in the world, but it does explain a great deal about what goes on in the mind of the athlete. Aspects that we can all use. I find myself constantly returning to this book as my life progresses and other tips become relevant, I often find myself remembering something Stephen wrote thus return to the book for some advice.

I have lent this book out on so many occasions in the past, but now am keen to keep it in my own hands as it is often tough to get it back. The reason the book is so sought after from my friends is that it deals with so many different sports. My father stole it for his Golfing advice, my cousin wanted to increase his Martial Arts internal energy (whatever that means!) my Sister wants to lose weight (whilst continuing to stuff her face!) and I need it for my Football skills.
If you choose to buy this book - take my advice write your name in the front cover!

Product Description
Expert athletes understand the mind-body connection. For years, they have learned mental skills from coaches, consultants, and other practitioners in order to optimize physical performance. Now, these same mental skills are being taught to a broad range of performers, such as dancers, actors, lawyers, surgeons, business leaders, and rescue workers. The resulting new field of performance psychology allows performers from a variety of fields to "get their head out of the way so that their body can do what it's trained to do."

In detail, this book shows the everyday practice of performance psychology. Case by case, the stories demonstrate how consultants have helped performers develop confidence, overcome mental blocks, manage emotions, and use preparation techniques such as imagery and positive self-talk in order to achieve the best possible mental state for performance.

The chapters blend theory and practice by integrating literature reviews with real-world applications, and they cover a wide range of performers, including athletes, performing artists, business leaders, and professionals in high-risk occupations. Extensive session transcripts are provided, including the consultants' thoughts and reactions throughout the session.

Engaging, nuanced, personal, and highly accessible, this book will help practitioners and students from a variety of fields explore performance psychology...in action. ... Read more
