Editorial Review Product Description Sport Psychology Interventions shows professionals how to help athletes get the most out of their sport experience and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Edited by Shane Murphy, former sport psychologist for the United States Olympic Committee, this practical guide explains how to assist athletes at all levels in facing the special challenges and unique problems that are common in today's sports world. Unlike texts that discuss psychological interventions aimed directly at improving athletic performance, Sport Psychology Interventions focuses on helping athletes enjoy their participation more and, as a result, perform better and achieve their goals by -growing and developing as individuals, and -experiencing sport as a positive learning process. Part I presents a variety of intervention models. By studying each model in the context of its application to a particular kind of athlete, the contributors are able to address specific issues related to -competitive recreational athletes, -student athletes, -female athletes, -elite athletes, and -other sport groups. -Educational -Multisystemic -Family systems -Organizational -Developmental -Marital therapy -Cognitive-behavioral Part II examines issues commonly encountered by many helping professionals in the sport setting. Case studies illustrate how sport psychology can be used in counseling athletes who are experiencing special circumstances, including -alcohol and drug use, -eating disorders and weight management, -career transitions, and -overtraining and burnout. Customer Reviews (1)
A Handbook for Good Professional Practice The book is well organized into multiple applied settings that explore models of intervention and special issues in counseling athletes. Specialists in sub-fields of sport psychology tackle sensitive areas in each chapter, for example, children in sport, working with a coach in a team setting, gender issues, providing services to student athletes, caring for injured athletes, over-training and burnout. Like other similar books in the field, (such as Williams (Editor) (1998) Applied Sport Psychology: Personal Growth to Peak Performance (3rd Ed)), 'Sport Psychology Interventions' gives a basic literature review for each chapter covered but also uses case studies taken from the experiences of well respected sport psychology professionals to demonstrate the effectiveness of interventions. As a trainee sport psychologist, I found the format of the book particularly helpful because of the applied nature. Writing from both the educational and clinical perspectives, `Sport Psychology Interventions' is well supported by research, exploring many areas of ethical and intervention issues that any practicing professional in the area are likely to face. From this standpoint the book is an invaluable resource that can be developed to facilitate much discussion about delivery guidelines and `our' boundaries as health care and performance enhancement professionals. A worthwhile addition to your library. ... Read more |

Editorial Review Product Description The text guides readers through these situations:• Understanding the dynamics of a variety of issues, including alcohol abuse and violence, referral processes, erotic transference and countertransference, and communication problems between coaches and athletes • Working with diverse clients, including athletes of color, gay and lesbian athletes, and disabled athletes• Presenting to and working with entire teams• Uncovering the layers of several complex topics, including eating disorders and injury and identity issues In addition to covering some of these complex and deeply personal topics, the text details the fundamental issues of applied sport psychology, including developing the consultant–client relationship and connecting with teams, coaches, and individuals. In dealing with relationships a sport psychologist would typically face, Sport Psychology in Practice addresses serious ethical and philosophical issues and asks more general questions about the field and how to work with clients. Sport Psychology in Practice contains insights from an elite list of contributors who explain, using real-life examples, how they successfully and ethically "do" sport psychology. Methods that have worked for the most respected practitioners in the field are presented with an informal, engaging approach and rely substantially on dialogue and actual experiences. In addition, the book offers expert commentary after three chapters, expanding on the issues within each of those chapters. It includes an afterword that analyzes the key points in the book. This book is a great starting point for discussion among students and long-time practitioners regarding how the field should evolve and what issues should continue to be debated. Part I of Sport Psychology in Practice addresses the processes of presenting sport psychology to groups, including youths and disabled athletes. Part II tackles the complex issues surrounding athletes’ concerns and ethical situations. The authors discuss cases that required great compassion in dealing with athletes in fragile conditions and precarious situations. Part III explores issues related to working with diverse athletes, including athletes of color and gay and lesbian athletes. You will consider the challenges these athletes face, the development of the relationships between the sport psychologists and athletes, and sport psychologists’ own prejudices and human frailty. Sport Psychology in Practice covers the fundamentals and delves into complex and even threatening areas. It pushes the practice of sport psychology further than most other texts. With its coverage of taboo topics and its occasional use of frank language, it will be sure to provoke debate, discussion, and controversy—and to be a solid resource for students and professionals alike. |

Editorial Review Product Description Cultural Sport Psychology offers researchers, practitioners, and consultants an excellent starting point for future research and practice. With contributions from a diverse group of established and aspiring experts in sport psychology, the text offers a complete and authoritative look at this developing field. The first two sections of the book will help readers understand the background of cultural sport psychology and how and why it should be studied. Concepts and theories shaping cultural sport psychology are identified and explored, and general guidelines are provided for practitioners to employ a cultural sport psychology approach. Part III of the text offers rich and varied approaches to the practice of cultural sport psychology. Within this extensive 12-chapter section, contributors offer their firsthand experiences working with athletes in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Ghana, Israel, Japan, Kuwait, Nigeria, Russia, Singapore, Sweden, and the United States. Some contributors offer a national perspective, focus on the influence of religion, or discuss cultural communities within a country and how to work effectively in relation to each. Others focus on cultural communities outside the mainstream, such as specific minority groups within the United States, Canada, and Australia. Case studies, advice, and suggestions in each chapter assist practitioners in engaging in multicultural exchanges within their sport psychology consulting sessions. Each chapter concludes with final suggestions or reflections based on the authors' experiences. Cultural Sport Psychology focuses on important cultural factors such as religion, gender, personal space, and social structure. These factors and many others are laden with cultural assumptions that may contribute--positively or negatively--to athletic performance and an athlete's well-being. As the first compilation on the topic of multicultural considerations in sport psychology, Cultural Sport Psychology assists practitioners in creating strategies relative to the culture and context of their clients. This text is certain to stimulate ongoing discourse and encourage increased focus on effective cultural sport psychology practice. |
