This is a great book for any football fan! Lots of info and awesome pictures! Highly Recommend

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book - lots of photos!
My nephew is looking forward to reading this before bed each night.Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for anybody...
This is a great book and will be handed down over the generations for others to read...

4-0 out of 5 stars Ex-college football player loved it
Last night my family opened Christmas gifts. My niece's new husband played college football and now does substitute coaching at a small college where he is a zoology professor. He spend a good half hour looking through his new gift book and was delighted. Excellent gift!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Man They Left Out
The most exciting runner of all time was Hugh McElhenny. They left him out. If you've never heard of him, check out some of those old grainy black-and-white films of the 1950s. He played for the 49ers. The first time he touched the ball in the NFL was a kickoff he ran back for a TD. In one season, he averaged over 8 yards per carry. That's not a typo. And that's in the NFL, not college. He did similarly amazing things in college at the U of Washington. He's a member of the NFL Hall of Fame, but they left him out. In the pantheon of most exciting football players of all time - that's most EXCITING, not necessarily the ranked best - it might look something like this:

1) McElhenny
2) Gale Sayers
3) Barry Sanders
4) Roger Staubach
5) John Elway
6) Jim Brown

Sure, Montana's not on here, but that's because he wasn't really that exciting. He was like a machine. Great, sure, but machines aren't exciting. Joe wasn't exciting.
McElhenny was. He was the King, but they left him out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Photography Instruction
This is an excellent book. Very helpful and instructive. I found it well worth the cost. Answered all the questions I could think of.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sports shooting defined
I like how the authors provide personal background so there is credibility, then they walk through equipment, positioning and some problem solving for each of the sports discussed in the book. It was an enjoyable read, not just technical details, but techniques.

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty good
It is a good book over all. The author explains the every thing pretty well and goes into detail with the setting you should ude, where are good spots to shoot, and gives lots of tips. He also shows some of his pix he took and explains some of them. this is nice book for people who want to learn more about sports photography.

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative and interesting
The book has intersting info like what kinds of photos would make an editor's cut. This is clearly based on author experience.
I also like the breakdown of tips based on several popular sports like baseball, basketballand his personal favorite, football.
But the book lacked some technical info that many newbie sport photographer would like to know. How to reduce depth of field
when shooting from more than 100 ft away. Not everyone will be able to shoot up close and personal. It would ha e been more interesting to share common technically problematic areas that he has overcome.
Overall, a good biographical piece.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I bought this book for my husband who takes action photos for our sons sports teams. When he opened it at Christmas, he wasn't too sure about it and definitely wouldn't have bought it for himself. He was very surprised at how good this book was and how the authors' experience was very similar to his own. The book addressed the very issues he was having problems with, especially how to deal with different lighting situations. Great information! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Team Sports Photography
A good starter guide for sports photography. The author successfully used real life experiences in several areas to support his information.I would have like to have seen more details on setting up the business aspect of sport photography, but overall the author provide enough information to get started.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good for business, not good for photography
If you want to learn how to set up your business as a team sports photographer, this book may be for you, as most of the pages in this book are dedicated how to set up your business as a team photographer.
But if you want to learn how to make actual photos about a sports event, this book is not for you, since only 10 pages are written about it. If you want to learn how to make portraits inside and outside, I would also recommend to choose another book. There are some guidelines, but these guidelines are not detailed and deep at all.

Was sad to see several photos in the book which had poor quality, like the girl's face being out of focus, soccer player's eye blown by flash. I am a beginner photographer, and there were several photos which I would have never published anywhere, especially in a book due to mediocre artistic message and poor faces of the boys and girls.

5-0 out of 5 stars Covers Everything
If you've ever attempted to photograph a sports team (especially a kids' sports team), you know there's a lot more to manage than you'd anticipate--marketing, developing salable packages, order processing, order fulfillment. And that's not even addressing the issue of getting the whole team in one place, taking group and individual photos (and somehow keeping track of who's who so they get the right prints!), etc. Williams does a great job of showing you how to manage the whole process and create terrific images without a lot of fuss.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice book.
This is a very nice book. It gives you a lot of advices and beautiful pictures. I really recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A pick not just for aspiring pros, but for parents wishing to capture their child's sports moments
MASTER GUIDE FOR TEAM SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY by James Williams tells how to capture athletes and game action on film, from selecting the right equipment suitable for sports photography to getting league and school sports assignments, scouting locations, and posing groups and individuals. With so many participating in sports, it will prove a pick not just for aspiring pros, but for parents wishing to capture their child's sports moments in a more professional manner. ... Read more

Product Description
For 50 years, Sports Illustrated has set the standard for sports writing and action photography. Now, for the culmination of the magazine's 50th Anniversary celebration, some of the finest writing and most memorable pictures from Sports Illustrated's archives have been collected in a lavish coffee-table book that will be treasured by the magazine's devoted readers for years to come. Along with the stunning photography, which includes every one of the magazine's covers since its launch in 1954, and the great writing that has appeared in Sports Illustrated's pages, this 288-page book will also be chock full of all-new facts and figures that will give readers an entertaining view of 50 years of American sports.Amazon.com Review
This colorful book celebrating fifty years of America's most prominent sports magazineis certainly more practical than hoarding 2,500 issues. The six-part book plays to the strength of the magazine: "The Stories" and "The Photographs" sections are the largest. The 35 articles are truncated, often just whetting your appetite for more. The companion book Fifty Years of Great Writing offers many of these in their full glory. On the other hand, the pictures are often bigger than they were in the magazine (or could ever have been with the smaller size). Lose minutes staring at Michael Jordan or Walter Payton frozen in midair. Examine the juxtaposition of a close play at the plate with the bizarre styles of a 60s women's track team. Try not to be swept away at a shot of Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain defining basketball. If you have picked up the special issues released during SI's anniversary year, you already seen a decent portion of this book. The notable new writing is Richard Hoffer's essay about the world (both sports and at large) when the magazine began in 1954 and senior editor Frank Deford's pitch-perfect introduction about why the magazine is special and how it grew up in the age of television. The section most folks will spend their coffee table moments is "The Covers," a listing of the entire magazine's cover images, both in chronological order and grouped in similar topics (Scandals, Presidents, Deja Vu). Punctuated by the best sport quotes, SI's "Signs of the Apocalypse," fascinating lists of athletes and teams that were on the cover the most times, and other sport tidbits through the ages, this area is sure to launch a thousand sport memories. Yes, all the swimsuit covers are in one place, too. One quibble: why is their "Sports Person of the Year" in the book not the same as their well-known "Sportsman of the Year?" --Doug Thomas ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great gift for the Sports Fan
I gave the collection to my father for Christmas.Every male relative could not put the book down for the rest of the evening. They were all huddled together thumbing through the books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Gift for the Sports Lover!
I got this as a gift for my boyfriend...he loves it!But it's only for the sports buff.Too much for someone who doesn't love all sports.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sports Nostalgia
Good coffee table book for the sports afficionado, especially the older one who likes to quietly "remember when".Careful when ordering from an Amazon partner.I got it on the cheap but it obviously had been stored in a damp environment as the pages were "rippled".Since it's not an heirloom or collectible I didn't go through the trouble of contesting it.Maybe the seller will get a hockey puck in the face or a bookcase will fall on him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have Book!
I'm on Amazon to purchase this book as agreed with my 5th grade son who checked this out of the school library in September and has never returned it.After renewing for months (it's now March!) I agreed to purchase it if he would only return it for another child to enjoy!

It is a beautiful book w/ lots of treasures particularly for the almanac-type sports fans. And besides his football book, it's one of his top 3 books!

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth Its Weight
This is a glorious celebration of Sports Illustrated's 50 years coverage of the minor and the major in sport. At first, the magazine devoted a disproportionate number of articles to "gentlemenly" pursuits such as troutfishing and yachting. However, the once timid magazine eventually hit its stride, with the help of television, with the talents of new editors and writers, and, arguably, by the visuals of television.

The book, with an informative but slightly cloying introduction by Frank Deford (he keeps on mentioning the swimsuit issue--about as relevant to the major sports scene as yachting was 50 years ago), organizes the magazine's stories and pictures by the decade.A current sportswriter gives an overview, there arearticles from the magazines, sidebar-like features such as quotes, historic cultural and historical events, and, mostimportantly, the photographs.

SI photography is the best of its kind, setting a standard that will defy any attempt to cater to some notion of the "new" SI reader. It is as dependable and as beautiful as a museum. The full page and two-page spreads here are magnificent records of sports history, character studies, stories of emotion, action, the literal and the figurative.A low angle shot of the then-named Lew ALcindor beating Houston in 1968. an underwater shot of Michael Phelps winning gold at the Australia Olympics, a black and white of Duke Snider climbng the outer field wall at Ebbets Field, an extreme overhead of Ali knocking out Cleveland Williams in 1966, mini-reproductions of cover of every issue, and yes, that includes the swimsuit issues--it's here at an overwhelmingly fan-friendly price.

In a way, then, the book is a direct descendant of the unique magazine of which one British man complained in 1954: "For 25 cents there is too much value."Although the book was produced bt SI and--as expected--celebrates SI, it also teases itself as well, noting that in 1954, "it published only six articles on basketball but 14 on bowling. It published 17 articles on clothing (but oddly, none on bowling clothing)."My only complaints: There's not quite enough of the original text (more of the writing is included in a companion book) and there is no index. A superb gift with more substance and memories than the usual oversized book. ... Read more

Awesome book, it has helped me understand a lot about massaging and is going to be of great use for my career. thanks very much

5-0 out of 5 stars Biased
Being a bit biased because I know the author and attend/ed her school, I can truthfully say her book leaves nothing out.It covers basics of therapeutic bodywork all the way up to actual helpful techniques for working with athletes.Contraindications, assessment techniques, rehab, case studies, it's all here.
There are plenty of pictures demonstrating techniques and the muscles that are being addressed.
There's even a video, that accompanies the book, to visually demonstrate even more, some of the techniques discussed.
If I could say anything negative about the book I'd say 'overkill'.Sandy has strived to leave absolutely nothing out.Kudos, Mrs Fritz!

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved by elementary and preschool too
My 2nd grader started reading these books, and got her 3-year-old sister hooked on them, too. We read them together and they both love this series. The books follow a familiar formula in which Jack Frost steals some magical fairy item and Rachel and Kirsty must help the fairies save the day. They are light reading but always entertaining. We read them over and over.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for sensitive kids
Elementary-school-aged girls love these books. My girls start reading them as soon as they're unwrapped! Not exactly literary masterpieces, but kids find them interesting and funny. The stories are always light - good for sensitive children who aren't yet ready for (and might tend to avoid reading) books that are scary or upsetting.

I got this for my 14-year-old son for Christmas. He was not in the habit of carrying his Bible to church. He does take this one.His friends think it is cool.It is bigger than I expected and in perfect condition.Next step:reading it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Lacking Key Verses
This book skips over few verses that are key to Jesus ministry. For example Matthew 17:20 Start off with Jesus explain the power of the mustard seed, then it skips to Matthew 17-22. Thus eliminating verse 21: "However , this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting."..Look through this book and see what other verses have been skipped that are vital to the ministry of Jesus and you will understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for any sports fan.
My ten year old spotted this Bible at a recent trip to our local Christian book store and couldn't quit talking about it.He couldn't wait till it came in the mail and was so happy with it.My son is an avid sports fan and he knows the athletes well.He has really enjoyed reading all the testimonies.Because our son goes to a Christian school he is pretty knowlegeable about the Bible and has memorized a lot of scriptures.(For his age.)I am so excited because I know that this will only encourage him more to read the Bible and get into the Word.I feel like anything that makes learning more fun is definetly the way to go.I can't recommend this Bible enough and I think my son will enjoy his for several years.

5-0 out of 5 stars fun book!
The book is fun and breezy.
Glad I bought a used copy, the service was great.

5-0 out of 5 stars top 100 greatest sports movies
This book was a great compendium of the best sports movies. My husband and I agree with many of the choices and this book has also made us aware of several movies which we have not seen, but are now eager to watch based on the recomendations made.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Idea but Written by the Wrong People
The idea of putting together a book on the top 100 sports movies is a good one--but in this case it's written by a couple guys who spout opinions instead of offering much in the way of objective details. One is from NFL films and the other is a sports radio host.Though both claim to have sportswriting background, they didn't put in the work to write a detailed, fact-filled book in the subject.

Each film gets a couple pages which includes a plot summary and then some tidbits like "best line," "goof" and "reality check."It reads more like a Wikipedia entry than a book that has been well researched. They include a few opinions from athletes, but mostly it is their own spouting about what they think are good and bad films.

A number of facts are wrong. They admit in the opening that they don't include boxoffice results as a measure of a film's success. And they also "did not include the three highest-grossing sports movies of all time," which they list as The Waterboy,The Longest Yard remake and Talladega Nights, since they are "frat boy comedies."Huh?They don't put them in a book just because of the style of sports film? They also err because the animated film Cars (which they do include in a list of children's sports films) actually beat all the others at the boxoffice.

Some of their choices are so strange that in the end the reader concludes that there aren't 100 great sports films--there may be about 40 or 50 of them. They include a number of movies that most have never heard of and their rankings are so arbitrary that beyond the top 15 the order doesn't make much sense.

Bingo Long at number 39 yet they only rank Rudy #57? Silly fluff like The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh is included at #100? Then widely-loved films like White Men Can't Jump is only #66, beat by movies you have never heard of like Sugar (which is about Dominican Republic baseball players--and one of the authors admits that he used to live there covering baseball.Hmmm--wonder why it's on this list?). Who can take them seriously after seeing that?

They also appear very biased toward boxing movies (including a number of obscure ones) and have way too many recent movies on the list that are hardly instant classics. And they include movies that aren't really true "sports" films, such as The Hustler and Rounders. Meanwhile they slam a number of true sports films on their list as not being realistic enough--so why rank them on a top 100 list if the authors are going to demean them?

This would have worked better if written by a Sports Illustrated researcher who did the work involved to dig up great details and then present them in a more objective way.As it is, it's nice to skim through but doesn't provide much new insight into any of the films.

5-0 out of 5 stars RICK "SHAQ" GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "IF YOU LOVE TO DISSECT SPORTS MOVIES YOU'LL BE IN HEAVEN WITH THIS BOOK!"
Any fanatical sports loving enthusiast who has also done due diligence off the "field" in his life... and waded through the millions of everyday movies made in the history of Hollywood... to find the few sports oriented "gems" and outright "classics"... will be rewarded for their efforts by buying this book. This is the *SUPER-BOWL-RING*... *HEAVYWEIGHT-CHAMPIONSHIP-BELT*... *GOLD-MEDAL*... compilation of sports movies. The authors have done an absolutely unbelievable job of culling through cinematic history... all the way back to the silent movie days... to pick the *ONE-HUNDRED-GREATEST-SPORTS-MOVIES-OF-ALL-TIME*! That alone could represent an ambitious individual's life work... but these sports loving authors... representing the underappreciated legions of men (and women) who not only want to rave... and rage... about the top one-hundred... but we also want to throw in a few piercing comments about which movies stink! But hold on! If you're like me... if this truly is our *DREAM-BOOK*... then it should be a printed version of what I/you want to represent the way we actually act in front of our TV... or in a movie theatre... or in a bar... in a "friendly" discussion/argument... with friends and foes alike. So if that's the case... how about:

*A LIST OF TEN ACTORS WHO ARE A DISGRACE TO ATHLETES AND SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO PLAY ONE*

*A LIST OF TEN ACTORS WHO PASS THE GRADE AS ATHLETES*

*HOW ABOUT THE BEST LINE IN EACH OF THE ONE-HUNDRED MOVIES?* An example in my favorite baseball movie of all-time "FIELD-OF-DREAMS" (Note: the author's admit it would be too easy to list, "IF YOU BUILD IT, HE WILL COME." Or, "HEY, IS THIS HEAVEN?" "NO, THIS IS IOWA." So they go right to the awe-inspiring poetry: "THE ONE CONSTANT THROUGH ALL THE YEARS, RAY, HAS BEEN BASEBALL. AMERICA HAS ROLLED BY LIKE AN ARMY OF STEAMROLLERS. IT HAS BEEN ERASED LIKE A BLACKBOARD, REBUILT AND ERASED AGAIN. BUT BASEBALL HAS MARKED THE TIME. THIS FIELD, THIS GAME-IT'S A PART OF OUR PAST, RAY. IT REMINDS US OF ALL THAT ONCE WAS GOOD AND IT COULD BE AGAIN. OH, PEOPLE WILL COME RAY. PEOPLE WILL MOST DEFINITELY COME."

Wow! There are many, many, places that the author's readily admit a box of Kleenex is required to watch certain movies. But if this is truly my/our dream book there should be more. How about:

*Reality Check* - where the director blew it in many of these classic movies such as when Shoeless Joe Jackson bats right and throws left. In real life Jackson threw right and batted left. (Just the type of things I/you yell at the screen all the time.)

*Lists of Sports Flicks For Kids*
*Great Sports Scenes In Non-Sports Movies*
*All-Time Movie Baseball Team*
*All-Time Movie Football Team*

Perhaps one of the most thought provoking features in the book is the *PIVOTAL-SCENE* section in each movie such as the one in *HE-GOT-GAME*: "AS THE TRASH TALK GROWS NASTIER, JAKE LOSES HIS EDGE-AND HIS ENERGY. JESUS IS BIGGER, FASTER AND, ULTIMATELY, MENTALLY STRONGER. THE ICIER JESUS GETS, THE MORE HE DOMINATES. IN FACT, HE IS USING THE LESSONS WE SAW JAKE TEACH HIM YEARS AGO. EVEN AS HE SLAYS HIS FATHER, HE IS VALIDATING HIM.

There are many other lists and endless bits of delicious sports and movie minutiae that are akin to precious jewels. This is not only a great read... but it will become a valuable reference book for years to come. It even recommends how "re-watchable" the flick is and ends each movie section with a famous personality telling you why that particular movie is his all-time favorite.

I highly recommend you buy this book because it has so much value on so many different levels.

Product Description
In this long-awaited book from the risingsuperstar of sportswriting, whose blog “The Edge of Sports” is read each week by thousands ofpeople across the country, Dave Zirin offers ariotously entertaining chronicle oflarger-than-life sporting characters anddramatic contests and what amounts to analternative history of the United States as seen through the games its people played. ThroughZirin’s eyes, sports are never mere games, but a reflection of—and spur toward—the politicalconflicts that shape American society.

Half a century before Jackie Robinson wasborn, the black ballplayer Moses FleetwoodWalker brandished a revolver to keep racist fans at bay, then took his regular place in thelineup. In the midst of the Depression, whenalmost no black athletes were allowed on theU.S. Olympic team, athletes held a CounterOlympics where a third of the participants wereAfrican American.

A People’sHistory of Sports in the United States isreplete with surprises for seasoned sports fans, while anyone interested in history will be amazed by the connections Zirin draws between politicsand pop flies. As Jeff Chang, author ofCan’t Stop Won’t Stop, puts it, “Afteryou read him, you’ll never see sports the sameway again.”

5-0 out of 5 stars The "Conscience" of Sport
Please correct me if I'm wrong but I believe it was The Washington Post who called David Zirin "the conscience of sport media". He tells you all the rest of the information that has been left out on the daily news feeds & sports talk shows for one reason or another; often the info you really should hear about. Mr. Zirin puts things into perspective & that is an understatement. If you want to be truly informed on sport, if you want to develop your opinions based on "the rest of the information" then read Zirin.Even if you find that from time to time you don't agree with him, you'll still have pertinent information to expand your sport knowledge base. Oh yes, and I recommend getting on his Edge of Sports email list.

4-0 out of 5 stars great book
excellent book for people who care about the dirty, hidden side of sports. writing is excellent. zirin is a pioneer and we need to hear his voice over the maddening sports crowd. hopefully he'll continue to produce reams of additional spectacular material.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must-read even if you're not a sports fan
Zirin reports on how sport is more than just about winning a game. There's more at stake than bragging rights and fat paychecks.Like it or not, sport has effected our views about race, gender, sexuality, economics and government. There are no ifs, ands or buts when it comes to rules of game, "but when the playing field is shown to be unlevel, it stings. This sporting reality can wake people up and reveal the hidden inequities in our society that otherwise go unnoticed."

Before reading this book I had a fuzzy opinion about whether or not athletes should raise their voices on political issues.I can now strongly say that indeed they should. If not for the words and actions provoked by athletes of our nation's past, then the many inequalities suffered both on and off the field would have continued to endure today.

5-0 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL READING FOR OPEN MINDED SPORTS FANS
David Zirin's masterfully researched and well-written "A People's History of Sports in the United States" is essential reading for anyone interested in sports and its relationship to society. My only gripe with the book is that I wish it were 150 pages longer, with more in-depth analysis of the events described. Nonetheless, this is a compelling read. From the Revolutionary War to the events at Jena, Louisiana (the lynching jokes and fights that got African American students in trouble), "A People's History" reveals that sports in this country isn't simply a red, white, and blue, non-political game, but a landscape where revolutionaries have thrived, both in competition and in their attempts at social change.A must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye-opening
Games are never just games. Even when children play, they are mastering the skills and cultural messages they will need to become successful adults. Yet in America, we cling to a cultural myth that sports are apolitical. We have the news channel CNN and the sports channel ESPN, and they are supposed to be entirely separate and distinct.

In this enlightening book, sportswriter Dave Zirin debunks this myth, exposing the politics, business interests, and cultural forcesthat have shaped modern sports. Zirin traces the history of sports from the lacrosse-playing days of the Choctaw Indians all the way to the modern steroid scandals and the behind-the-scenes politics of the international Olympic Games. Throughout, he focuses on how race-related conflicts have helped to shape modern athletics.

The host of a popular blog called "The Edge of Sports" (edgeofsports.com) and a regular contributor to the L.A. Times and the Nation magazine, Zirin has an engaging style that will appeal to sports fans, history buffs, and anyone else who wants their eyes opened. The favorable reviews and high sales certainly suggest that this book will help reduce the myth of sports as apolitical. (See the publisher's website, newpress.com, for links to recent publicity, which includes a favorable plug in Time Magazine.) Author Jeff Chang promises that after reading this book "you'll never see sports the same way again"; author Jim Bouton (Ball Four) goes even further by predicting that this is "the opening shot in the battle to reclaim sports."

Not only is the book enlightening, it is also a fun read full of engaging stories that you can share with friends and family while you are waiting for the game to begin. And if by game time you haven't yet convinced them that politics is embedded in sports, Zirin recommends an exercise that will unmask the "coercive patriotism" surrounding them: Have them try staying seated while the national anthem is being played, and they are being told to stand to support the troops in Iraq. ... Product Description
The experience of flow is still one of the leastunderstood phenomena in sport. And yet it is one of the richest, mostmemorable experiences an athlete will ever know.

Some call it a natural "high." Others refer to it as being"in a zone." Whatever the label, flow is that elusive anddesired state of consciousness that athletes, coaches, andpsychologists have tried to understand, harness, and employ to theirbenefit ever since Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi first coined the term backin the early 1970s.

Written by Susan Jackson and the world-renowned Csikszentmihalyi, Flowin Sports both explains the phenomenon of optimal experience andidentifies the key antecedents and conditions associated with itsoccurrence. Moreover, the authors specify several thoughts and actionsthat athletes and coaches can engage in to set the stage for flow tooccur during training sessions and performances. Their insights aresupported throughout the book with real-life examples, testimonialquotes, and research findings.

Find the peak experience—the added fun—that you’ve been missing. Get in flow, and achieve the most incredible performance state you’ll ever know. ... Read more

Flow in Sports was a very straight forward and easy to understand book that has helped me imensly with my sport performance. They give you all the information; all you have to do is apply it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, not well written
I recently went on a binge of "mental training" books. This one came highly recommended, and I have to be honest, I am not very impressed. The main problem is the style of writing is, well, boring. I found myself constantly reading, then re-reading pages. ZZZzzzzzzz.... I am going to re-read the book - it does have some good info in it - maybe a second read through will be easier.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but there are better
This is a good book.It is very interesting subject, and the qualifactions of the authors is without doubt.But.There is a but.It is not great. It could be more readable, it could cover more ground, it could have a lot more examples than 'simon' who is some never identified cyclist. If you search for flow, zone, deep play, inner game and sports you will find plenty of books that are not just good, but great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great story by Tonya Ramagos
This is the third book in the series Rock Hard Seduction. Once again I stress that you read this series in order because if you don't you might miss how great this series is! This book really hit home for me because the main characters were dealing with a loved one who has Alzheimer's disease. I had a family member who had Alzheimer's and our family went through some of the same situations as Melody's. This book was a little slower for me to get into than the others, but I really enjoyed it all the same. I liked the fact that Diana was in it and that you got to learn how the other couples from the previous books are doing. I was so glad that all Alicia's fears were wrong and that in the end everything worked out just the way it should be. While this book was one that I could easily put down (unlike the others) it is also one that I just couldn'tnot pick up again. Can't wait to start the last one! :) ... Read more

Product Description

Managing Sport Facilities, Second Edition, continues the tradition set by its predecessor of providing future and current sport facility managers with the knowledge they will need in order to make the proper decisions in all areas of facility management. Like the groundbreaking first edition, the second edition provides a comprehensive understanding of crafting a career in running a sport facility.

The second edition of Managing Sport Facilities continues to engage students with a clear writing style, extensive real-world examples, and information on managing a wide range of facilities, from professional sport stadiums to smaller and more common health clubs, colleges, and recreational environments. As managers require expanded knowledge to meet the needs of large, high-tech sport and recreation facilities, this edition has been updated to include these features:

-An expanded section on risk management

-New information on security issues

-A full array of ancillaries, including an online instructor guide, test package, and presentation package
In addition, the text offers updated content in the Facility Focus and Behind the Scenes sections, which bring the theories and concepts to life by citing specific examples of strategies used to make a facility—and the facility manager—more successful. Through the newly added facility manager profiles included in each chapter, students receive a close-up look at the challenges and rewards that practicing facility managers experience in their daily work. Readers also learn about the managers' educational and experiential backgrounds that helped them land their current jobs. This text provides students with a complete look at what it takes to develop and run a sport facility with an approach that combines various topics and disciplines. Students will learn the history of the sport facility industry and the primary goals and objectives of facility managers; how to build and finance a facility; facility operation; administration of marketing, finance, and other critical areas; and event administration and management.

Managing Sport Facilities, Second Edition, contains extensive textbook learning aids, including real-world checklists and forms that allow students a glimpse of some of the tools and guidelines that professionals use in their work. Each chapter begins with objectives and a brief overview and concludes with a summary and discussion questions and activities. The instructor ancillaries will help instructors prepare for and teach their class, and the text itself is written in a clear and engaging style that makes the reading understandable, cogent, and easy to remember.

Starting from its already solid foundation, the new material, updates, ancillaries, and practical learning aids make this new edition the most complete and up-to-date text on the subject. Product Description
Like its predecessor, the updated second edition of Sport Law: A Managerial Approach is organized around management functions rather than legal theory. Its clear and informative style will help readers understand how legal concepts relate to specific managerial functions and will help prepare them to assume a broad range of responsibilities in sport, education, or recreation.
Whether readers work or assume roles as coaches or teachers; are program administrators in a professional program; manage fitness/health clubs; or work in a high school, college, Olympic, or professional sport organization, legal concerns will inevitably be woven into their managerial concerns. This book shows how knowledge of the law creates a competitive advantage and helps build a more efficient and successful operation that better serves the needs of its constituents. Sport Law is organized around four broad business functions: (1) human resource management, (2) strategic management/governance, (3) operations management, and (4) marketing management. It provides relevant examples and explanations and has a clear, accessible tone. Finally, the book covers the legal areas suggested in the COSMA accreditation program approval guidelines and includes such topics as governance in professional and Olympic sport, employment discrimination, sporting facility and event management, participant violence, and intellectual property rights. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Little Boy's Reading Dream
I purchased two of these books for little boys in 2nd and 4th grade. They love sports and both have told me how fun the books are and how much they loved them. They are brothers so I purchased the two books in the series so they could trade.Fun, fun reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for my nephews!
I gave And Nobody Got Hurt! Books 1 and 2 sets for Christmas for each of my nephews, both 10 years old.One started reading as soon as he opened his gift and was finished with one book by the next day.The other newphew isn't much into reading, yet he also started to read.Needless to say, this nephew's parents were delighted.

4-0 out of 5 stars A funny and wacky book
Reviewed by Dylan James (age 11) for Reader Views (11/07)

This book gathers short, true, and funny stories from baseball, basketball, football, soccer, golf, tennis, Olympics, and random sports like boxing and scuba diving. My favorite part of the book was when a tennis player scored 1 point and then walked off the field thinking that the game was over. How crazy is that?

I would recommend this book for girls and boys ages 10 and up, simply because some kids are not familiar with the object and rules of all the sports in the stories.Readers will relate to the book better if they have watched or played these sports and will have a better opinion of how funny the story is.For example, the reader might not understand how funny it is for a baseball player to run the bases backward if they do not know that much about baseball.Otherwise, this book was delightfully funny and has numerous funny stories that kids can share with their friends (and make them laugh!).

Because someone might not understand some of the sports, the book might be better if it contained some sort of guide that tells about the rules in each of the sports. A small number of the stories were not that funny and some of them seemed like the same story (i.e. multiple baseball bats falling on heads). If all the stories were funny and different and if the book contained a small sports guide, I would have rated it five stars.

Overall, the writing really makes it hard to put the book down, and is very good at drawing you in and making you want to read more.I read it in one sitting! The author was trying to make his readers laugh and I think he was very successful. This book, "And Nobody got Hurt 2!,"made me laugh countless times.

Product Description

Sports. They get our blood pumping and our hearts racing. Fans scream and cheer as their favorite athletes run, throw, pedal, dive, or swing their way to victory. But what makes an athlete successful? Why do some players excel when others fall behind?
In Why a Curveball Curves, the experts at Popular Mechanics, along with top athletes, coaches, and sports journalists, explore the science behind sports. Fluid dynamics, biomechanics, and technology determine everything from speed in cycling to protection in football to performance measurement in all sports. This book is designed for both the player and the fan, helping athletes become better-prepared and giving enthusiasts a more complete understanding and appreciation of the subtle nuances of competition.
The explanations are clear, entertaining, and written by people who really love their game. The issues discussed range from Tiger’s swing to Lance’s legs, from gene doping to the physics of why a seemingly straight kick curves drastically just before its target—in other words, how to bend it like Beckham—plus so much more.
Among the specialists who weigh in are: Matt Bahr, who kicked the winning field goal in Super Bowl XXV; Bob Bowman, who coached swimmer Michael Phelps to a record-setting eight medals in the 2004 Olympics; Lou Piniella, manager of the Chicago Cubs; Peter Brancazio, Professor Emeritus of Physics at Brooklyn College and author of Sports Science; and Jim Kaat, a major league pitcher for 25 years.

4-0 out of 5 stars A gift
This was purchased as a gift for a family member who is interested in all phases of baseball. He really liked it.

5-0 out of 5 stars read it in one sitting
This book was so interesting that I couldn't put it down- read it in less than two hours. It explains some of the science behind sports, not just baseball, but football, bowling, golf, basketball, and more. It is not too technical, so the average joe can understand it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Whatever your favorite sport is, you'll probably find it covered in this book
As a kid, I was never a big science fan . . . I've now become
more interested in the subject and you will, too, if you
read WHY A CURVEBALL CURVES--edited by Frank Vizard.

This book is a collection of articles from POPULAR MECHANICS
by such contributors as Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella,
Olympic swimming coach Bob Bowman and Buzz "The Shot
Doctor" Graman . . . you'll learn how certain hockey
players achieve greater speed on the ice, why swimming is
all about reducing drag and even what Babe Ruth had to say
about the mechanics of his home-run swing:

* Coordination, that is perfect timing and harmony of action, is a great
essential. You have got to develop rhythm and full utility of every
muscle. My whole body goes with every swing. I swing right from the
hips. And those who have seen me take a healthy sock at the ball know
what I mean. With that coordination there is the fact that I assume that
strength is behind it.

Whatever your favorite sport is, you'll probably find it covered
in this book . . . baseball, basketball, bowling, boxing, cycling,
football, golf, hockey, running, skiing, soccer, swimming and
diving, and tennis all get covered in separate chapters, often
accompanied by memorable photos.

I often found out some surprising information; e.g., about the
importance of the follow-through in golf:

* Irrelevant. In truth, a golfer could release the club from his hands
the moment after impact and it would make no difference--except,
of course, to your playing partners, who might not appreciate
having your eight-iron embedded between their shoulder
blades. Still, a full release of your arms and torso, leading to a classic
pose, with your belly button pointed to the target and your hands high
above your front ear? Well, that always looks nice for the cameras.

And then there was this passage about hockey's Wayne Gretzy
that ended with one of my all-time favorite sports quotations:

* By his own admission, Gretzky, who played most famously with the
Edmonton Oilers as well as several other teams during the 1980s and 1990s,
was not the strongest or fastest or most agile player on the ice even though
he was named MVP of the National Hockey League nine times. What
Gretzky did have was an ability that amounted to being able to see into
the future and visualize what was going to happen in the next few seconds.
In an article appearing in WIRED magazine, scientists working for the U. S.
Olympic team and the Australian Institute ofSport concluded that skills
like Gretzky's come from an innate ability to intuitively translate physical
cues dropped by opponents that are not apparent to most other athletes.
Scientists are at work figuring out how this skill can be taught, but this type
of perceptual training is still in its infancy. On the other hand, Gretzky may
have just been following his father's advice, given to him when he was
a youngster: "Skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it
has been."

Methinks that's great advice for any sport . . . unfortunately,
putting it into practice was never quite that simple--or at least not
for me.

A DK book, it is great.I love to see kids read especially something hardcopy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good friend for a P.E. Teacher
I teach physical education at a high school. This book has been great for two reasons.

1) Children that do not change for class have to write an article review.Reviews about each sport (detailed history is not included about every sport) are entertaining and easy to understand for students. In addition, the rules of each game are described in very good detail that I have begun to use this book as a study guide for different sports.

2) Although the book does not recommend ways to alter games that can be played in a classroom- a little creativity goes a long way.My class just finished a "Team Handball" unit that became very easy to understand with the use of pictures in the book.We used a volleyball and tape on the court and a couple of soccer goals.Worked great.

I can't give this book any less than 5 stars because it is a very complete book of just about any game you could ever think of.The only issue becomes, "Who would need that?!"

Well, this guy did because I am a gym teacher. If you have a reason to know about underwater football, you might like this book too.

I hope my review filled your heart with glee.
