5-0 out of 5 stars I never thought I could...
I never thought I could run.I group up overweight, chunky, wearing size husky pants most of my life and one day I was just sick of it and was already in my early 30s.I decided then that I would try running but knew that I couldn't just start cold turkey.I saw this book and planned in a week to start.I followed it to a tee and ran my first 10K, about 14 weeks later.I did that first 10K in just about an hour.

NOw- 7 years later, I am still running and hitting Personal Records every day.I hit my own personal best 10K in under 43 minutes and recently ran the Walt Disney World Half Marathon in just under 1 hour and 42 minutes.

If anyone had ever told that big kid years ago that I'd be running and loving it, and doing it with the pace that I'm doing it in, I would've laughed and when people ask what is my secret...I tell them that it all started with a book.

Thank you Dr. Ian MacNeill... when I was pushing 200 lbs, in just 13 weeks - I renewed my confidence, my spirit, and regained the rest of my life back!Over the years I've yo-yod in weight, but now I'm a healthy 144 and all because of running and eating right!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for beginners
I bought this book because I had become out of shape in recent months and needed a push to get back on track.I have been an avid gym rat for about the last 10 years, so I sort of know what I'm doing when it comes to getting in shape. This book gives great tips on what to eat when aspiring to be a runner. It also gives advice on stretches, injury prevention, running shoes, and different terrain to run on.I felt this is a good book for beginner runners because of the basic tips and advice given. It helped me gather the initiative to get back on track.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended especially for those without motivation
This book was given to me by a friend who has watched me struggle with exercise and weight.I always made fun of runners and about the arthritis they must have.
Then I read the book and started running.I am in my 12 week of the 13 week program.I have lost 5 pounds, although my friends say it looks like more.I even turned down an opportunity to eat out at lunch so as not to undo what I have done to my body. The book kept me motivated and thus far injury free. The program is easy, portable and has great tips.It will be on my Christmas gift list for family members that have used all the excuses I used to use.

4-0 out of 5 stars Listen to your body
I bought this book to get me started running. I have not been doing much in the way of any exercise for about two years. I did start walking a couple weeks before I started this program.

I started at week one with the 1 min of jogging and 2 min of walking. I was getting some soreness and stiffness in my knees and shins. It sure does give you a wakeup call on how unfit you really are when you can barely run 1 minute without huffing and puffing. I got through week 1 then started week 2 with the 2 minutes of running.I got through the first day's training. My knees (mostly at the back of the leg) got very stiff and sore and had to quit the training for now. This partly may be due to not wearing proper shoes.

It has now been one week of rest. I am still a little stiff and sore, but much better. Yesterday I tried a 30 min walk (with new shoes). Had pain the whole time, but walked through it. Came home, stretched, and took some ibuprofen. Today I cannot believe the difference. I am feeling no pain at all just some minor aching.

What I am saying here is that EVERYONE is different. If you are getting pain after week one, I would rest, then cut the program in half for the running time and more gradually build up. You have to realize that in total for the first day you are running for 12 minutes. This may be too much for some people.

I am going to do a 60 minute walk on one day - pain free, then start another with a 30 second run and see how things go.

I bought another book - The Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer - which is very good. It also has a beginner schedule in the Introduction (Page 9) which does not start any running until after WEEK 4. Then starts jumping very quickly. This is a 10 week introduction before you start the formal training in the book.

In summary, I wish that the Handbook had explained some alternatives if things do not go well your first week - things to be aware of if you need to cut back and take it slower.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will help you start running
A lot of water has passed under the bridge since my glory days of running.I, like many of you, needed a program that, if I stuck to it, would get me back into running.I picked up this book with that goal, resumming running for the rest of my life, firmly in mind.Following the 13 week program, I went from not really being able to run much at all, to being able to run the 10K run at the conclusion. It's a good program which will challenge you, yet give you time to rest and heal, a very important facet of training that gets ignored in the quest for quick results. All you have to do is do what the program says, whether you think you can or not.Just do it and before you know it, you're running.

I would highly recommend this book to first time runners, and folks like me who've fallen off the health band wagon and are trying to get back on.Believe me, with this program completed, you will not only have accomplished something significant, but you will have a foundation on which to build a permanent running lifestyle.5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful family story for football fans
I got this book just before the movie came out because I had a feeling I was going to love the story and I wanted to get a sense of the book first. What I found was a wonderful balance of football history/theory and story of a family brought together by football. Sometimes we aren't born into our families, and this was the case for Michael Oher. I'm a football fan who loves stories that explore humanity. In The Blind Side, I got it all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wow
I don't like football.I would not see the movie.I was surprised when Sandra Bullock got an award for the movie based on this book. Then I read the book.I LOVE THIS BOOK. The most important part is that the main character accepts Jesus into his heart!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Story of Wish Fulfillment!
I love 'The Blind Side' and I never watch football.I did skip some pages that were only about football.Michael Lewis explained the football parts very well, but I just wanted to get back to the story.I stayed up until 5:00 am reading 'The Blind Side' and I was surprised to see the sun coming up.I highly recommend 'The Blind Side'.

5-0 out of 5 stars love and insparational book
I really admire this book its a great football book and great for people who love who love football to read. I also have a little brother who is working on being in the NFL when he is older.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Storyteller, Great Story
Everybody knows the story recounted in The Blind Side, so I won't recap it here for you. I'll just tell you this was a great book - one of the best I've read this year. It was historical narrative, but unlike other books of this genre by other authors, Michael Lewis did several things really well with this one.

He managed the web of characters really well. He gave background and history on most of the folks, and introduced you to all the main and supporting characters but never to the point where the complexities made it difficult to keep everybody straight (like, for example, in Charlie Wilson's War -- which, granted, covered a wider scope but got bogged down too much with all the characters). It was easy to follow and remember who everybody was - from all the assistant coaches to Michael Oher's mom and siblings to his long lost childhood friend.

Lewis also managed the pace and scope of the story well. It never felt jumpy or choppy (like, say, 5 Cities That Ruled the World) like it was zooming in and out from metanarrative to minute details and back. The pace was even and kept my interest the entire time. Anecdotes from football were timely and neatly inserted to highlight and complement Oher's and the Tuohy's story, and broke it up just enough to keep you reading.

And finally, Lewis didn't beat you over the head with any sort of moral of the story, so to speak. He simply told the story and let its power speak for itself, and then left it up to the reader to draw any sort of conclusions or morals they wanted. (A practice which is much too underdone in writing these days - and which evidently allowed many people to get upset rather than inspired by the book. According to his new afterword, he got letters from conservatives, liberals, whites, blacks, Christians, and nonchristians all complaining about the story.)

Lewis is a great storyteller and this was a great story. That combination is a powerful force which results in a great book. ... Read more

Product Description

Satan’s Playground chronicles the rise and fall of the tumultuous and lucrative gambling industry that developed just south of the U.S.-Mexico border in the early twentieth century. As prohibitions against liquor, horse racing, gambling, and prostitution swept the United States, the vice industry flourished in and around Tijuana, to the extent that reformers came to call the town “Satan’s Playground,” unintentionally increasing its licentious allure. The area was dominated by Agua Caliente, a large, elegant gaming resort opened by four entrepreneurial Border Barons (three Americans and one Mexican) in 1928. Diplomats, royalty, film stars, sports celebrities, politicians, patricians, and nouveau-riche capitalists flocked to Agua Caliente’s luxurious complex of casinos, hotels, cabarets, and sports extravaganzas, and to its world-renowned thoroughbred racetrack. Clark Gable, Jean Harlow, Louis B. Mayer, the Marx Brothers, Bing Crosby, Charlie Chaplin, Gloria Swanson, and the boxer Jack Dempsey were among the regular visitors. So were mobsters such as Bugsy Siegel, who later cited Agua Caliente as his inspiration for building the first such resort on what became the Las Vegas Strip.

Less than a year after Agua Caliente opened, gangsters held up its money-car in transit to a bank in San Diego, killing the courier and a guard and stealing the company money pouch. Paul J. Vanderwood weaves the story of this heist gone wrong, the search for the killers, and their sensational trial into the overall history of the often-chaotic development of Agua Caliente, Tijuana, and Southern California. Drawing on newspaper accounts, police files, court records, personal memoirs, oral histories, and “true detective” magazines, he presents a fascinating portrait of vice and society in the Jazz Age, and he makes a significant contribution to the history of the U.S.-Mexico border.

5-0 out of 5 stars Satan's Playground
Paul J. Vanderwood, Satan's Playground: Mobsters and Movie Stars at America's Greatest Gaming Resort.

This is a fascinating history of Tijuana's fabulous Agua Caliente resort and casino. Engagingly written, exhaustively researched, Vanderwood (the author of Juan Soldado: Rapist, Murderer, Martyr, Saint, (2004) and The People of God Against the Guns of Government (1998), opens up a pandora's box of multiple stories about the famed resort, the politically and socially well connected "barons" who owned it, the mobsters who tried to fleece them, the politicians on both sides of the international border who profited by it, the Mexican workers who made it function and the Hollywood glitterati and middle class Americans who boozed, schmoozed and gambled away their money for as long as the resort operated.

In a style and with a flair that is reminiscent of Erik Larson's The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America (2004), and Timothy Gilfoyle's A Pickpocket's Tale: The Underworld of Nineteenth Century New York (2007) Vanderwood opens his book with a brutal robbery and murder in San Diego in May 1929 tying it into the crime and violence spawned by America's disastrous experiment with prohibition and the Tijuana resort built to take advantage of it. While thousands of Americans flocked to Tijuana "with its wide-open gambling, whorehouses and cantinas" others saw "that peppery community as corrupting the morals and endangering the health of young people (is it only the young who get corrupted and diseased south of the border?)," the author asks (99).The admonitions and actions of church leaders, the U.S. Naval Command at San Diego and many other guardians of the nation's morals is another of the many issues the author analyzes with insight and sound judgment. By the end of the 1930s moralists on both sides of the border hailed the closing of Agua Caliente, but they could never be happy with the flourishing bars, whorehouses, and night clubs that continue to attract tourists on Avenida Revolución.

For those readers interested in post-revolutionary Mexican history Vanderwood has brought forth rich material from Mexican archives detailing the involvement of the revolutionary generals Obregón, Calles, Rodríguez and Cárdenas with the owners of Agua Caliente. Abelardo Rodríguez, in fact, became one of the "barons" who owned the resort, protected it from revolutionary reform fervor and profited handsomely.

This is an informative and exciting read about a place and time in border history that merits more attention from scholars who, like Vanderwood, write history for everybody to enjoy, not just colleagues in the profession.

5-0 out of 5 stars Satan's Playground
Making his way deep into the lost world of Tijuana's legendary entertainment complex, Paul Vanderwood boldly leads us where few historians have gone before. This transnational tale centered in and around the lost world of Tijuana's Agua Caliente upscale resort is masterfully revealed through an array of sumptuous, sometimes spine-chilling, vignettes combined with probing historical analysis. With a stylistic nod to the great crime fiction writers who have similarly cast their narratives in the shadows of the southern California sun, Vanderwood has produced an impeccably researched, well written and reader-friendly piece of work. This is "true crime" at its' finest!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Vanderwood triumph
This is another of Vanderwood's great books, which read like detective novels but are solidly based on historical research. "Satan's Playground" could have been written by Raymond Chandler, and is full of celebrities who fled prohibition in the U.S. to gambol in Tijuana. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in U.S.-Mexican cultural relations, as well as for those who simply like well-written history. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dip in and get lost
This is a great book for Hollywood-o-philes who are seeking to get an overall chronology of what-happened-when, who-won-what-awards, who-were-the-top-stars-and-which-were-the-top-movies through out Hollywood's entire history. It's the sort of book you can look up one fact and two hours later realise that half the afternoon has gone. This book is a great addition to the reference lobrary of anyHollywood movies fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great year by year film digest
Year's ago, this book was commonly seen in stores. It never really impressed me. Then, one Christmas, a cousin gifted it to me. I figured, "Oh, well. It's worth a look, I guess." Eventually, I found myself more and more entrenched in this text, as the years went by, and I dug deeper into film history(a favorite subject). If you're a film historian of any kind, this book will be a great addition to your film guide collection. It covers the business itself, the movies-big and small-that were released in a given year(often including where they premiered and in what month), the personalities, births and deaths, marriages, and the top box office: films and actors both. For instance, in 1939(referred to as "the year of the movie"): war breaks out in Europe; HUAC begins its search for commies in Hollywood; Ann Sheridan is nicknamed the "Oomph" girl; Louella Parsons and Hedda Hopper start their feud; "Stagecoach" revives the A western picture; average ticket price is 23 cents; top males at the box office are Mickey Rooney, Tyrone Power, and Spencer Tracy, respectively; top females are Shirley Temple, Bette Davis, and Alice Faye; worst actor, per the Harvard Lampoon, is Tyrone Power; George Burns and Jack Benny are up on charges of smuggling; Paramount decides not to renew Betty Grable's contract; et al. Product Description
How a movie about minor league hockey became a box office hit-and an international cult classic

Even thirty-odd years after Slap Shot's release, diehard hockey fans can still recite scenes of dialogue by heart, making lines like "putting on the foil" just common argot for the devoted. Yet many may be surprised to learn that the true story behind the making of the film is as captivating as the film itself. In The Making of Slap Shot, veteran sports writer Jonathon Jackson lets fans not only relive just how the film was made, but brings to light surprising facts (i.e., Al Pacino was the first choice for the role of Reggie Dunlop; almost every scene-even the absurd and unbelievable ones-depicts a real life event). With access to those involved in the making of the film, he brings to life some of the magic behind the creation of memorable scenes and characters, especially the Charleston Chiefs, one of the most popular fictional sports teams in history.

  • Based on interviews with over 50 cast members, production staff, and anyone of note involved in the film's creation

Destined to be a collectible and keepsake (along with the jerseys, bobbleheads, and other paraphernalia associated with the film), The Making of Slapshot is a must for fans eager to learn even more about their favorite film. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent hockey fan gift
My son is a die hard hockey fan so I bought him this book. Instead of sitting at his computer playing video games as usual, I found him sitting in his room reading for hours! When he was finished reading it, he asked me to buy the movie for him... I plan to buy several more copies for family members and friends as Christmas gifts who absolutely love hockey!!! A definate must read!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hockey Lovers, and film buffs too
I had the pleasure of reading this book on a long flight and I simply couldn't put it down.As a die-hard hockey fan, and someone who has seen the movie probably fifty times, I was absolutely fascinated by the background behind the making of the movie. It was particularly poignant given Paul Newman's recent passing.

There's no question that it is a "must-read" for hockey fans, but I dare say that fans of film-making, and of Paul Newman in particular, are in for a real treat.

5-0 out of 5 stars If You're a Fan of Slapshot, You'll like this book. . .
This book gives some great insight into minor league hockey during the 1970s and tells the real story behind the stories in Slap Shot including info about the real players who were the basis for the characters in the movie, as well as the actors who portrayed them.

Jonathon Jackson also gives a compelling portrait of Johnstown, PA where the film was shot, and ends with a "where are they now" section about the actors, players, and filmmakers who brought us this classic movie. ... Read more
