Product Description
Fight Medicine is the first book that explains in detail what medical professionals, fighters, trainers and managers need to know about diagnosing and treating combat sports injuries.

Injured boxers, wrestlers and mixed martial artists who ignore injuries or fail to seek optimal health care often pay for it with pain, frustration and lost training time. Fighters require specialized medical care from appropriately trained medical professionals. Although there are many well-qualified physicians who take care of athletes, some may not have the specialized training needed to recognize a serious fight injury that can impact a fighter's career. Many health care providers are unfamiliar with the unique issues of fight medicine, such as hand injury, ocular injury, concussion and chronic traumatic brain injury.

Dr. Kelly has packed Fight Medicine with chapter after chapter of solid information on the diagnosis and treatment of a wide array of injuries and ailments suffered by fighters, including bone, joint and soft tissue injuries; neurological and cardiac conditions; pulmonary conditions; and infectious diseases.

Whether you're a doctor who wants to learn more about fight medicine or a fighter or trainer, Fight Medicine will give you the information you need to make the right call. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Insecure Author
The author is insecure about his education and makes claims that are inaccurate. He operates from a dogmatic and narrow minded window. The picture of his Cervical Spine Stabilization is a reflection of his lack of knowledge. A fighter will be combative when they begin to come around and without stabilization of the shoulders with the head you have zero control of the Cervical Spine and are now further jeopardizing the athlete. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Text
This book is a great compilation of research surrounding strength and sports performance. This would make a great addition to someone wanting to learn more about the scientific nature of strength and how it pertains to athletics.

You should be aware, however, that this is not a typical book in that you read each chapter lightly. The writing style is very similar to peer-reviewed journals.

Some of the sample chapters such as "Stretch-Shortening Cycle" and "Neural Adaptation to Strength Training" are excellent.

This book would make a great supplement to an exercise physiology student or anyone interested in exercise science.

5-0 out of 5 stars horse massage book
This is a wonderful book for the everyday horse owner or caretaker. The photos and descriptions are so helpful! My 2 horses say, "Thank you"!

2-0 out of 5 stars There must be better books out there
I have seen amazing results from having a professional equine massage therapist work on my horse and hoped this book could teach me to give my horse massages that would supplement the professional ones.I was very disappointed.

The illustrations fall short of clarifying the text and the text is quite vague. The writing style is almost too casual and the author's use of British terms could be confusing to some. The book is very short and could have been shortened further if most of the pages weren't filled with white space and pictures of the author grinning like an idiot in poses that do not explain what she's doing.

The techniques the author describes makes one think that just currying a horse will sufice as a thorough massage.I imagine there are better books on how to give a sports massage to a horse.Hopefully I will come across one soon. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A little out dated
It is a good book and helpful but you have to keep in mind it was writen about the time the first power meter came out so it has been a while. There are newer books with more up todate information. I'll keep it on my book shelf but won't use it much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Great book!
May not be the best in the field, but it covers all the bases. Provides great insight from the author and is a good foundation for expanding in the sports medicine field!

4-0 out of 5 stars enthusiast123
A nice book.Easy to read and well-laid out.Not much to say about impotency controversy but virtually every basic cyling issue is otherwise covered. It helped me figure out my knee pain which I appreciated!

2-0 out of 5 stars Outdated Bicycling Medicine
The author makes statements that are no longer valid, current, or that are flatly inaccurate. One diagram stated that muscles attach to bones by a ligament. This is not true.Muscles originate and insert into bones via a tendon, with some tendons longer or shorter than others, and with muscle/tendon transitions having different anatomies. This is important in understanding injuries and how to treat them.Arnie also opens up the topic of nutrition with the USDA Food Pyramid, another problematic scheme, since we now know that a high percentage carbs diet of breads, cereals and pastas is a source of stripped-down carbs, not good quality carbs. The medical advice for treatment of painful conditions is outdated.NSAID medicines are now known to have deleterious effects on our bodies.Current research suggests that NSAIDS interfere with the healing of tendons. And, especially for neck and back pain, chiropractic should be the first choice, since it has been demonstrated in several studies over the years to be safe and effective.Lance Armstrong couldn't have performed well without his chiropractor...
The author seemed to have a boiler-plate approach to presenting information.Hopefully his next edition will be more current and clinically accurate.

5-0 out of 5 stars A No-Nonsense Approach
Anyone who rides can benefit from the great information and tips found in this book. You'll also learn about common bicycling injuries. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Probably a very good book
I ordered this book based on an interview with the author that I heard on NPR.Overall it seemed like a very complete book, but it was far to technical and scientific for me to appreciate it.I gave it 3 stars not because it's not a good book - but it's too advanced for me to give it an accurate review. If you are looking for an easy non technical nutrition book - this isn't it.If you are looking for something a bit meatier, with plenty of scientific technical information - it may be the one you want.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Purchase
I have read other sports nutrition books, but this book is by far the best. The writing style is simple, and the research comprehensive. The books touches on all aspects of nutrition and how it affects performance. I recommend it for any serious athlete.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very scientific
Too scientific for me. This book may be a good reference if you're a sports dietitian.

5-0 out of 5 stars A worthwhile reference
First and foremost, this exceptional book is not a "one stop reference"; thats an idea that people often look for in a book, that probably doesn't really exist. Quality books should be added to your library, taken for what they are and what they offer, and compared to other similar books to create a bigger picture or understanding as it applies to you...there is no single perfect "way" when it comes to nutrition, much like training for your chosen sport. This book is no exception, it is well researched and exceptionally useful, written by an author that applies what he knows to Olympic athletes. As a strength athlete most interested in powerlifting and strongman types of lifting and competition, the chapters referring to this type of training directly are limited and mostly bunched up with wrestlers, etc. under "power athletes", so it isn'texactly what I was looking for, but it still fits the bill in alot of ways as the info is there just not set out by itself under that title. Advanced Sports Nutrition covers a broad range of sports and has tons of useful information on everything nutrition that can be useful to just about anyone. It covers alot of unique as well as general topics. Join it up with a few more books like Nutrition Almanac and you'll be on your way to having whatever you need at your fingertips. This book is worth your time and money, although like myself, you might not realize the extent if its usefulness until you open it up and start putting things together.

Organization and topics:

Part INutritional Sources for Athletes
-energy nutrients, vitamins/minerals, fluids/electrolytes, and ergogenic aids

Part IINutritional Aspects of Optimal Performance
-timing, absorption, oxygen, and inhibitors

Part IIIFactors Affecting Nutritional Needs
-travel, altitude, gender/age, and body comp/weight

Part IVNutritional Strategies for Specific Energy Systems
-Metabolism for endurance/power (anaerobic/aerobic), and needs for both

Part VNutritional Plans for Specific Sports
-Power/speed sports, endurance sports, and combined power/endurance sports.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you!
As a nutritinal consultant who needed to learn more about sports nutrition, this book really did the job. ... Read more

Product Description
Audiences: A reference for exercise physiologists, physical therapists, rehabilitation specialists, nurses, physicians, health and fitness instructors, and clinical program directors; also a textbook for students studying chronic disease, disabilities, or multiple conditions.

Now in its third edition, ACSM's Exercise Management for Persons With Chronic Diseases and Disabilities offers both exercise and health professionals the latest research and applications for integrating exercise into the treatment of 49 chronic diseases and disabilities. This reference was developed by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and written by contributors with significant clinical and research experience in exercise programming for people with chronic conditions.

ACSM's Exercise Management for Persons With Chronic Diseases and Disabilities, Third Edition, contains tools to assist in the coordination of exercise within an integrated model of patient care. The updated edition presents a framework for determining functional capacity in persons with chronic diseases and disabilities and offers guidance in developing appropriate exercise programming to optimize functional capacity and reduce the compounding effects of exercise intolerance.

Unlike textbooks on special populations, ACSM's Exercise Management for Persons With Chronic Diseases and Disabilities provides an overview of exercise management and addresses a wider spectrum of chronic diseases and disabilities. A consistent and concise format allows readers quick access to the pathology of interest, training and response to exercise, management of medications, and recommendations and special considerations of exercise testing and programming. Within the text, diseases and disorders are organized into six sections: cardiovascular; pulmonary; metabolic; orthopedic; neuromuscular; and cognitive, psychological, and sensory. Information presented for each of the 49 conditions is based on the most current clinical research.

The third edition includes an added color and contains new chapters on metabolic syndrome, stress and neuropsychiatric disorders, multiple chronic conditions, and fibromyalgia. Information on professional preparation in serving patients with chronic diseases or disabilities has also been added. In addition, reformatted tables provide quicker reference for testing and prescription data. Recommended readings found at the end of the book offer resources for more in-depth study.

The text also includes case studies for each condition. These cases, drawn from the contributor's clinical practice, illustrate how scientific research and clinical experience can combine in the development of an informed program of care for each patient. Case studies follow a set format, beginning with an overview and a subjective objective assessment plan (SOAP) report, followed by an exercise program and a follow-up statement for select cases.

ACSM's Exercise Management for Persons With Chronic Diseases and Disabilities, Third Edition, presents exercise as a viable component in the care and treatment of chronic disease and disability and offers guidance for appropriate exercise prescription that can positively affect functional capacity and slow or prevent exercise intolerance. As the prescription of exercise for persons with chronic conditions increases, exercise and health professionals require the appropriate data and tools to serve these individuals. ACSM's Exercise Management for Persons With Chronic Diseases and Disabilities will assist professionals in translating the science of exercise physiology into the art of practicing exercise medicine. ... Product Description
Abstract:Ankle stability is integral to normal motion and to minimizing the risk of ankle sprain during participation in sport activities. The ability of the dynamic and static stabilizers of the ankle joint to maintain their structural integrity is a major component of the normal gait cycle. In sports, this quality assumes even greater importance given the range of movement and stresses imposed on the ankle during various sporting disciplines. In the general population, the incidence of ankle sprain is very high. In several studies, injuries to the lateral ankle ligaments have been shown to be the most common sports-related injuries, accounting for approximately 25% of all sports-related injuries. Furthermore, up to 80% of all ankle sprains involve the lateral ligament complex. Other studies have estimated their incidence as approximately 5000 injuries per day in the United Kingdom and 23 000 in the United States. Aggressive treatment of the sprained ankle is essential to maintain foot and ankle mobility and prevent prolonged disability and subsequent overuse injuries among athletes, both professional and “weekend warriors” alike. ...
