Excerpt: The 1994 Asian Games also known as XII Asiad were held from October 2 to October 16, 1994 in Hiroshima, Japan. The main theme of this edition was to promote peace and harmony among Asian nations. It was emphasized by the host because the venue was the site of the first atomic bomb attack in 1945. This edition of the Asian Games saw two additions. One is the addition of the return of Cambodia, surviving years of civil strife, made her come back to the Asian Games after 20 years' absence. The other one is the addition of five Central Asian countries newly independent from the former Soviet Union: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The Hiroshima Asian Games was the first to be held in a non-capital city. Due to the First Gulf War, Iraq was suspended from the games. Also, this was the only Asian Games to have a male-female pair as a mascot. There were a total number of 6,828 athletes and officials involved, from 42 countries, with a total number of 34 events. Debut sports at this edition of the Asiad were baseball, karate and modern pentathlon. National Olympic Committees (NOCs) are named according to their official IOC designations and arranged according to their official IOC country codes in 1994. The Games were held from November 19 to November 30, 1993 and included 3,570 athletes from 32 nations. The city of Ponce inaugurated the Seventeenth CACG less than three years after the closing of the Sixteenth Games in Mexico City. The ODECABE staff developed a close working relationship with the Games organizers in Puerto Rico to carry out the Games in the context of the commemorative celebrations of the discovery of Puerto Rico 500 years earlier, in 1493. Exactly five centuries before the Ponce '93 Games the island of Puerto Rico had been discovered by the Europeans and in 1993 the city of Ponce became the second city in Puerto Rico to host the oldest regional games in the world. Great book on field events for high school athletes. A must.
High school athletes as well as coaches will love this book. It has great photo sequences and is written so the athlete can actually take it to practice.Lots of humor in it to make the technical stuff actually fun andeasy to understand.

Cultural History of Sports
This is a collection of essays about the effects that major sports events have had on countries that hosted the events. The Olympics and Football World Cup are featured, and the authors of each essay explore different aspects of how each society reacted to some peculiar facet of the experience. In Argentina during the 1978 World Cup, a brutal repression of leftist dissidence was going on while the home country was battling for the trophy they eventually won. The author explains how the Cup experience unified even those being imprisoned and tortured with their right wing captors in the headiness of nationalist sports fervor. Similarly, another essay looks at the way South Korea's and Japan's peoples behaved during the joint World Cup they co-hosted in 2002; whereas the Japanese were reserved to the point of banning street viewings on large screen TVs of the matches, the Koreans enthusiastically embraced the tournament that saw their squad advance to the semi-finals. Some essays are more interesting than others, always an issue with such collections of varying writing skills. But all in all a useful summary of the cultural impact that global sports can have. ...
