3-0 out of 5 stars A little disappointed
Spoilers are in my review, you have been warned!!!

After reading all the reviews, I had big hopes for this book.I couldn't find it in any of the stores so I had to order it online. For the record I'm 29 years old and I find that I enjoy teenage books alot more than adult books.

I have a few unanswered questions:

1) Who was the mermaid she saw so late at night?
2) Why was Lynn so against her going to the North side and hiding Mermaid Park from her? You'd think that she'd certainly tell her about the towns greatest attraction. So that lead me to believe that Lynn NEW about Skip.

The book started off great, build up of characters, our girl is the classic spoiled teenager that is used to getting her way.She also has to deal with a stepdad that has no respect for her, thus she has no respect for him.I believe that if a parent or an adult wants respect from their child, they are to respect them in return.I don't think it's fair that your parent can sit there and cuss and yell at you all day long and all you can do is take it.They TEACH us to act this way... sorry getting off topic, I grew up with a strict stepmother and an abusive dad.Moving on.The build up of Dylan and her relationship was great, it reached the climax and just... dropped.I don't mean fell down slowly, it DROPPED.One min she was so into this guy, build up, build up, I do mean ALOT of build up, and BOOM, she gets him to kiss her and the very next day she goes "oh wow.. his ears are to big".And she suddenly doesn't like him anymore. Her obsession with becoming an actor in the Mermaid act was exhausting.

I found the scene where she fell threw the window, or pushed through it with her hand, a little had to believe.

I find.. the secret... I just don't get people like her mom.She keeps this huge secret about Amy being the daughter of another guy, finding out that Bruce was really her grandpa. How the heck is a teenager supposed to respect or trust their parent after this?Maybe I'm being to harsh.

Overall, the book was so so.It reminded me of a time when I was a teenager and my family took me to a show just like this.Underwater mermaids and men swimming around, breathing threw tubes and so forth.I really don't believe that she learned anything, maybe to be more nicer? It would seem her sister learned more than our main girl did.

I have 1 sister that's still a teenager and I can already say she wouldn't care much for this book, course right now, it's all about the vampires. But for other teenagers, I'd say give it a go.It's not a romance, it may have built up into one but dies, completely dies in the middle of it.The book is more about her obsession with Mermaid Park then anything.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mermaid Park
3.5 stars
Mermaid Park is a story about Amy, a teenage girl who is sick of her family. Her mother never listens to her, her sister is a big phony and her stepdad is, well, a big jerk. She goes to vacation with her family at Jersey Shore. She ends up staying for the summer with her godmother and works at the Mermaid Park, where mermaids perform underwater in a huge tank.

This is a coming of age story. We see Amy discover herself and learn to deal with the people around her. Even though this book isn't what I expected, I enjoyed it. Amy reminded me of some of the things I went through as a teenager. I think we all feel like the world is out to get us at sixteen, at least I did.

I was dissapointed by the romance. It set it up in the beginning for romance, but it fell short in the story. But like I said, this is a coming of age story. Amy can't be sure of someone if she is not sure of herself. The mermaid park is what makes this story. Dressing up as a mermaid and performing underwater in a huge tank is like the all time little girl dream job. The Jersey Shore was a fun setting to read about. I felt like a was on vacation again with my family while reading this. This is a great beach read, or a read when you are wishing for warm weather.

5-0 out of 5 stars I met Beth Mayall
My boyfriend's second cousin is married to the author and I had the pleasure of meeting her just tonight at his family's christmas eve party and we were just casually talking and she told me she wrote this book and I realized how much I really did love it. She said it was very hard work and that she didn't realize how much work went into a novel and that perhaps she'll write another one sometime soon, but right now, she's pregnant with a little boy.

I recommend this book because it was somewhat autobiographical for Beth and that she did such a great job with relating the character to the reader. Plus, her style is beautiful and lyrical and is absolutely amazing. Take my word for it, this book is definitely worth picking up. And I am not just saying that because she is in my bf's family. I truly think this book is deserve the read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mermaid Park
I picked Mermaid Park up at the bookstore because the cover intruiged me. At first, I wasn't sure whether or not I would like the book. But as I got farther into the book, I loved it. The characters are well developed and they each have their own personality.

The plot has just enough twists and turns to keep you waiting. At first, I thought it would be very predictable but it turned out not to be, especially on the romance side.

If you're looking for a fun summer read, this is the book for you!

4-0 out of 5 stars Mermaid Park
Warning!! This is going to be one of the best books you are going to read. The book is Mermaid Park. The author of this book is Beth Mayall. This book has a bit of adventure and a bit of romance in it. Most of all I think it has a mystery behind this entire book.
The main character in this story is Amy Rush. The thing is that Amy is tired of always being the outsider in her family. She is tired of the distance between her sister, Mel. Nothing in sixteen-year old Amy holds the promise of anything but disappointment until a nightmare weekend at the New Jersey shore with her mother, sister and Tom, her stepfather, and tom leads to a discovery that will change her life. She never really liked her stepfather Tom.
When she was in New Jersey shore she first lays eyes on Mermaid Park. She felt like she stepped into a living, breathing fantasy. Girls dressed in fabulous costumes put on underwater shows. Amy becomes convinced that she could be one of the "mermaids." Over the summer she discovers that reality and fantasy is murkier than it seems. ... Read more

From the supplier: The number of women serving in the International Olympics Committee (IOC) has grown slowly since its creation in 1894.As of 1996, its membership consists of 99 men and seven women. The women who have been serving in the IOC since 1981 have proven themselves to be competent and deserving of their positions. The present trend is to make more leadership positions available to women and to allow more females to participate in sporting events.

Product Description
It was bad enough when popular offensive line coach Joe Moore sued the University of Notre Dame for age discrimination—but matters got much worse when the lawsuit uncovered disquieting evidence of unethical and inappropriate conduct in a football program widely regarded as a model of probity.

This is the dramatic story of that explosive lawsuit, which tarnished Notre Dame’s burnished football image: the winner of eleven national titles; the home of legends Knute Rockne, the Gipper and the Four Horsemen; the subject of innumerable books and films—Notre Dame football has been idealized as everything that is good and right about American sports competition and, indeed, about America itself.

This riveting story begins in November 1996, when Bob Davie is hired as head coach to replace the beloved Lou Holtz. In one of his first—and most fateful—executive decisions, Davie fires 64-year-old Joe Moore because—as Davie puts it—he needs someone younger for the job.

Attorney Rick Lieberman takes on Joe Moore’s case and in this absorbing book he describes the trial and the enormous tensions to which litigants like Joe Moore are subject. This is a David and Goliath story in which the Notre Dame attorneys attempt to destroy Joe Moore’s reputation as both a coach and a man. In the process, Davie’s own background comes under close scrutiny as a reporter’s investigation reveals some damning evidence.

And as the trial proceeds, Notre Dame’s football program is shown to be rife with legal improprieties and inappropriate behavior involving both coaches and administrators.

Anyone interested in sports, in the law, in stories of blatant injustice—and in Notre Dame—will find Personal Foul a fascinating, revealing and memorable read. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written, but even more poorly litigated by Notre Dame.
Coach Moore is another in a long line of legends to coach under the Golden Dome.Unfortunately, Bob Davie is another in a shorter line of terrible head coaches hired by the Fighting Irish. As for the book, the author (and Moore's lawyer) would have you believe this is a tale of David vs. Goliath in the courtroom, and that his brilliant legal acumen brought the Notre Dame empire to his knees.Truth be told, a first-year law student could have won this case, and Notre Dame's legal department should be ashamed for ever letting this case go to trial.Bob Davie ADMITTED in public, to the Notre Dame football team and others, that Coach Moore's age had something to do with his termination. You don't need Clarence Darrow to tell you that is age discrimination, my friends, and only the arrogance (or perhaps stupidity) of the then-administration at Notre Dame let this case go to trial. If you hate Notre Dame, maybe you'll find pleasure in their bungling of this matter. In fact, had Notre Dame not been the Defendant, nobody would think twice about reading this book. There are pleny of better written and more interesting books on the legal system out there.Oh, and Joe Paterno coaches at Penn St. by the way...

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good First Pass At A Difficult Subject
I agree with those reviewers who have praised this as a good read. But it is no more than a "war story," and would have benefited from better editing and been more widely and profitably read as a magazine article. To deserve a book, the author should have reflected on the wisdom of the law which he practices, not only on behalf of plaintiffs but defendants as well. Why should those over 40 deserve the same protection as those who suffer racial, gender, or handicap discrimination? All of us grow old, and while that may not be fair and may affect each of us in different ways, can we as a society want or afford to be swamped with litigation and all its attendant stress and cost to argue the issue in a myriad of cases?Should the next generation be put on hold in the meanwhile?Perhaps the only lesson of this book is that Head Coach Davie must not have worn a helmet in his playing days.Otherwise, he would never have made any reference to age, but fired the plaintiff without explanation, or by simply saying that he wanted to hire his own coaching assistants.

5-0 out of 5 stars ...Bob Davie ...
... Coach Moore is a simple and straightforward man who was thrown under the bus by his friend Davie after Davie maneuvered his former head coach Lou Holtz in front of that same bus.The reader learns of Davie's scandal ridden past and how the University looked the other way and even used its power to fight Coach Moore despite being totally in the wrong. ... An enlightening look at the dark side of an egomaniac...and an instiutution...that backed him.

5-0 out of 5 stars The true story of a volatile lawsuit
Personal Foul: Coach Joe Moore vs. The University Of Notre Dame by Richard Lieberman is the true story of a volatile lawsuit that coach Joe Moore filed against the University of Notre Dame for age discrimination. From this suit came evidence of pervasive unethical conduct in a university football program that had formerly been given the highest regard. Commanding the reader's full attention, Personal Foul is a compelling and revealing exposé into the tangled and often dark complexity of human nature in general, and college football in particular. Highly recommended reading for college football fans in general, and University of Notre Dame alumni in particular.

5-0 out of 5 stars Personal Foul
I couldn't put the book down. At first I was skeptical about whether or not the topic would appeal to me in that it is sports-related and about law. I'm not a sports enthusiast nor lawyer. But that was of no consequence. The book was riveting on another level: its narrative style. So if you like a good read, you'll love this book! ... Read more

Product Description
Two days before Super Bowl XLI in 2007, the game's two opposing head coaches posed with the trophy one of them would hoist after the contest. It was a fairly unremarkable event, except that both coaches were African American--a fact that was as much of a story as the game itself.

As Jeremi Duru reveals in Advancing the Ball, this unique milestone resulted from the work of a determined group of people whose struggles to expand head coaching opportunities for African Americans ultimately changed the National Football League.Since the league's desegregation in 1946, opportunities had grown plentiful for African Americans as players but not as head coaches--the byproduct of the NFL's old-boy network and lingering stereotypes of blacks' intellectual inferiority. Although Major League Baseball and the NBA had, over the years, made progress in this regard, the NFL's head coaches were almost exclusively white up until the mid-1990s.

Advancing the Ball chronicles the campaign of former Cleveland Browns offensive lineman John Wooten to right this wrong and undo decades of discriminatory head coach hiring practices--an initiative that finally bore fruit when he joined forces with attorneys Cyrus Mehri and Johnnie Cochran. Together with a few allies, the triumvirate galvanized the NFL's African American assistant coaches to stand together for equal opportunity and convinced the league to enact the "Rooney Rule," which stipulates that every team must interview at least one minority candidate when searching for a new head coach. In doing so, they spurred a movement that would substantially impact the NFL and, potentially, the nation.

Featuring an impassioned foreword by Coach Tony Dungy, Advancing the Ball offers an eye-opening, first-hand look at how a few committed individuals initiated a sea change in America's most popular sport and added an extraordinary new chapter to the civil rights story. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars some good ideas
i like this book, and am using it to try to make a little more money on two wheels.some good ideas, now a bit dated.needs to be updated with some added sections regarding the benefits of the internet.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you've ever contemplated a bike delivery business...
...then this is the book for you. It's really helpful that his background is actually building various trailers and cargo bikes. Particularly I that he goes through all the different types of businesses - what their problems and opportunities entail - as he has tried to start many of them. Grocery delivery or fast food delivery often come to mind with bike delivery - but there are challenges to starting these kinds of businesses that most people don't think of-challenges that he outlines in the book, as well as legalities around hiring messengers, how to find good help etc.

1-0 out of 5 stars Yawn....
I thought I'd pick up with book to do a little research for starting my own bicycle messanger company.Turns out, this was NOT the book for that. This is a book for someone who enjoys riding their bike and likes to wear rose colored glasses.I would not recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cycling for Profit review
The delivery of small packages by bicycle - the courier or messenger business - has a continuous history as old as the bicycle itself. In the twentieth century the role played by bicycles in delivering larger cargoeshas been eroded by motor vehicles. As motor traffic finally limits its ownspeed in the city to that of the machines it replaced, the specialistload-carrying bicycle has made a comeback.

This book is the first how-tomanual to emerge from the contemporary 'workbike' phenomenon. There aresome pamphlets aimed at prospective bicycle delivery operators published byDetour, but this is an attempt to produce a more comprehensivereference.

The author of this book runs a bicycle delivery firm in Iowa,USA. Consequently, much of the advice is US-centric, such as details of taxlaw and insurance. However, the advice is still useful to people outsidethe USA because it gives the reader an idea of the kind of things theyshould be considering before starting in business.

The author covers theobvious areas such as selection of equipment and marketing your prospectiveservice, but also offers the benefit of his experience on keeping abusiness viable and the recruitment and retention of staff, two areas wheremost workbike business failures occur.

A large proportion of the book isdedicated to real-life examples of workbikes in use that have provedsuccessful. It begins with the kind of jobs that you can do without muchspecial equipment, such as inner-city pizza, airline ticket andpharmaceutical deliveries, where speed - and therefore the lack of need tofind a place to park a motor vehicle - are critical.

The book goes on todetail the ins and outs of grocery, printed matter and furniture delivery.Recyclable material collection is well covered, and mobile bike repair, lawn mowing and window cleaning get a mention too. Ice cream vending, thattraditional British use for a workbike, is mentioned in passing - theCanadian operator interviewed for the book has a fleet of twelve hundredtrikes.

Pedicabs - bicycle taxis - are covered, including the criticalinformation about local laws that often forbid their use, or make themunviable. There is a view, concurrent with the idea of 'motor vehicle asliberation', that the workbike is backward and a form of exploitation, andmust therefore be eliminated. Unfortunately, this aspect of anti-bikelegislation is something we've recently exported globally, threatening theliteral survival of thousands of becak operators in Indonesia alone. It'sespecially ironic that pedicabs are now seen every night in London, just asthe authorities are clamping down on them in Jakarta.

The author admitsto his interest as a manufacturer of trailers in the trike or quad bikeversus trailer controversy. Three or four wheel bike advocates point to thegreater stability and braking performance of their vehicles, while trailerfans boast how they can quickly detach the extra wheels when a smalldelivery is called for. It's a debate which is unlikely to beresolved.

The book contains a few typos, but as the only book of its'kind so far, it is required reading for anyone interested in the subject. ... Read more
