Product Description
An examination of the special character of sport through European law's microscope reveals the scope of European trade law's adaptability to the particular context in which it is applied. The story of European sports law told through the case law illuminates the way in which European law is exploited by actors as a lever to prise open sometimes long-established organisational patterns. Sport has in recent years become more commercialised and more juridified too. The challenges to its self-regulatory preferences have strengthened and European law plays a significant part in this narrative. It is testimony to the pragmatic and creative approach of the European Commission and the European Court of Justice to the regulation of sport within the Single Market of the European Union, even though there is no specific provision in the EC Treaty giving the EU competence in the field of sport. ... From the author: This paper investigates the proposition that violence is a significant determinant of player salary and employment in the National Hockey League. The basic hypothesis is that teams are composed of two types of player: the skill player whose performance and reward depends on scoring and the like and the physical player who is rewarded for bringing violence to the game. Testing this hypothesis ultimately involves constructing a model of salary determination and testing for the joint equality of the coefficients of skill and physical players. The data consist of a sample of 388 players for the 1989-90 season. The major conclusion is that the coefficients of the estimated models are significantly different for skill and physical players, thus confirming the hypothesized distinction.

Tactical Employment of Nonlethal Weapons (NLW)

Today’s world events mandate a need to project nonlethal force across all levels of war to enable our warfighters and leaders to effectively deal with a host of traditional as well as nontraditional threats. Now more than ever, the minimal level of tolerance for collateral damage and loss of human life, coupled with the tendency for the typical adversary to exploit the rules of engagement (ROE) to his benefit, necessitates an effective and flexible application of force through nonlethal weapons. Much like a rheostat switch in which power can be dialed up or down as desired, NLW provide tools to allow a commander to employ sufficient force to accomplish an objective without requiring the destruction of an enemy or the habitat. The intent of employing NLW is not to add another step in the progression of escalation with an adversary, but to add another tool to use anywhere along that continuum. This publication provides initial guidance for employing NLW in a tactical environment. ... Read more

From the supplier: The law can hold administrators liable for any employee's misconduct or wrongdoing, either by vicarious liability or due to negligent hiring, retention and supervision. Vicarious liability assumes that the employer should control the acts of its employee within the scope of employment so that it becomes accountable for the employee's conduct. Negligent hiring, supervision and retention holds the employer directly responsible for decisions on employment matters since the employer should exercise his expertise in such situations. Situations illustrating these principles are presented.

Product Description
Sport is life, fun, passion but also business. It is not easy to draw a bright line between sport as an economic activity and sport as a crucial cultural element of society. In Europe, the stakes are prodigious from either perspective. On the one hand, sport represents 4% of the GDP of the European Union; on the other, there are in the EU more than 800,000 sport clubs with more than 70 million members. In numerous ways, the former depends on the latter, giving rise to a plethora of subtle tensions. For decades the EU institutions have struggled with the legal issues that arise from these tensions, and the debate has come to be encapsulated in the complex concepts of the sport exception and the specificity of sport. Now, the pending Reform Treaty, if ratified, will finally provide a legal basis for a Community action in the field of sport.This new collection of essays presents nine well-informed and insightful analyses of the specificity debate from several distinct points of view. The book reprints the papers presented by outstanding academics as well as representatives of the sport world at a conference on the Future of Sport in the European Union held at the Catholic University of Brussels in December 2007. The authors examine the legal and political issues related to the latest developments at the EU level, and their impact on the sport organisations, in order to better understand the future of sport and to answer the questions which will inevitably arise from the new situation.

Among the topics arising in the course of the presentations are the following:
pure sporting interest vs. economic activities within the overall meaning of Article 2 EC;
whether the EU legal order in fact applies to sport activities;
application of EC law to rules governing the composition of national sports teams, especially as defined in Bosman and Meca Medina cases;
relation of sport to freedom of association and the principle of subsidiarity;
initiatives to share use of financial gains from television rights;
role of bylaws and other regulations of federations at every level;
responsibility of sport organisations vis-à-vis the rules of public order;
freedom of labour and free movement of workers as applied to sportsmen and sportswomen;
the right to privacy, image included;
the European sport model ;
protection of young sportsmen and sportswomen from commercial pressures; and
economic and social role of volunteering activities in sport.

As an analysis of the future directions of EU sport law, this book provides an in-depth assessment of the impact of current policy changes. At a time when a new European treaty is being drafted, and when new questions on sport are being referred to the European Court of Justice, these cogent analyses of European law applicable to professional sport will be of great value to professionals concerned with sport in any of its guises. ... Product Description
The Sporting Exception in European Union Law is the definitive account of EU sports law. It provides a modern legal framework based on an analysis of major European Court of Justice judgments including Walrave (1974), Donà (1976), Bosman (1995), Deliège (2000), Lehtonen (2000), Kolpak (2003), Piau (2005) and Meca-Medina (2006). It also provides advanced commentary on the major sports-related competition decisions of the European Commission. Broadcasting issues, rules affecting player mobility and issues of sports governance are analysed, as are current issues in EU sports law including the Oulmers case, home-grown players, players' agents, the Services Directive, the Audiovisual Media Services Directive, the 2006 Independent European Sports Review, the 2007 Commission White Paper on Sport, the Reform Treaty and prospects for social dialogue. The work is a resource for academics, lawyers and sports administrators and students of sports law and EU law programmes. ... Read more

Product Description
The International Encyclopaedia of Sports Law deals with international and national sports law. For both levels, the encyclopaedia will include the texts of the laws and the regulations of the sports organisations. This constitutes the "codex" volume. As far as monographs are concerned, the preferred approach is to structure the encyclopaedia by jurisdiction, in which various issues will be dealt with (according to a similar table of contents). In this approach a main division of the encyclopaedia is seen in three parts, namely international, regional and national. For each level, similar topics should be dealt with, like those mentioned below. An introductory part may precede the other parts. For each level of jurisdiction, a further distinction will be made between public regulation (laws and regulation from governmental authorities) and private regulation (regulation and by-laws from sports organisations, like IOC, FIFA, etc.).

Countries currently covered: Bulgaria, Hellas, India, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite pleased
The book mainly centered on customizing the 1911, very little on tactical application and hardly anything on maintenance.Not quite pleased with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent information
I thought this book has a lot of excellent information in it about the workings of the gun, possible modifications and some great tactical combat training chapters.I highly recommend this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Its a wasteof money!
To tell you the truth, I did'nt enjoy reading this book. If you really want tolearn more about 1911's, go to the nearest gunsmith.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-have for the to-be 1911 owner
I found the information shared extremely helpfull.Where was this book when I bought my first 1911?Had I access to this level of in-depth explaining and discussion of the options available I would have made some different decisions.The author obviously knows his stuff and speaks from first-hand experience. The only criticism I have is that the author only refers to work performed by US gunsmiths. It would have been great if the appendix could also have referenced some reputable smiths in other countries.I know this is probably unlikely to happen due to the logistics involved...
