5-0 out of 5 stars Editor versus Author
Courtney Nolan is the EDITOR not the AUTHOR.All material is from the SAME publisher.Lots of publishers do this.It is another way to market books.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mixed bag with some good points
Pluses: This book is decent for beginners because it has large photos accompanying each step of the process for a project in most cases.
Cons: I say "in most cases" because sometimes it assumed prior knowledge about how to do something and a few times I was hard pressed to figure out what the missing info was. (I'm new to cardmaking, so I need things spelled out!)
Pro: There was a great section up front on making various kinds of paper. I hadn't previously considered making my own, but the steps and instructions in the book make it easy enough for me to tackle
Con: While I appreciated the idea of the cards, and the techniques being used, the end results were kind of arty and felt a bit Stevie Nicks/New agey if you get my drift. Definitely an acquired taste. However, I will be happy to apply their techniques and tweak them to my own style.
Con: I didn't like the way they had all of the card "beauty shots" crammed into a few sections of the book (often far away from the actual instructions) and all of the rest in black & white and a burgundy color. Sometimes black & white how-to photos just don't work when you're trying to figure out where to put the turquoise versus the yellow paper (and it's not in the steps!). If you're going to spell stuff out for us, do it right! This was not obvious to me since the book's insides weren't available for preview and no one else had reviewed this book before I bought it.
**My main beef about this book, however, and also something that is not apparent to anyone given the author is Editor Courtney Nolan is that ALL--at least 85% it appears to me--of the projects also appear in the book Making Greeting Cards with Creative Materials by Maryjo McGraw. And in that book, which I also bought, the projects are shown in full color photos throughout. So save your money on this one and buy the Making Greeting Cards with Creative Materials instead!! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars I wouldn't take their advice
A couple of the reccomendations:

Griffey's 89 Donruss over his 89 Upper Deck. At the time the book was written the Donruss sold for $4 and the Upper Deck for $12. The Donruss now goes for $12 and the Upper Deck for$150... and has been mentioned as possibly one of the best of the ModernCards.

81 Fleer Graig Nettles card(error) $12 card should be worth $25 in2 years... It's now worth $10

75 Topps Robin Yount

83 Topps WadeBoggs

84 Fleer Update Dwight GoodenI love this one, $75 card now worth$14

69Topps Reggie Jackson

72 Topps Carlton Fisk. Sell your children, sell your vintage T-Bird, buy this card. Was $50 now $55

86 DonrussRookies Bo Jackson

86 Donruss Jose Canseco

Just to name a few. I didappreciate a couple of their calls. 79 Topps Ozzie Smith,86 SportflicsCanseco/Greenwell/Tartabull Error. I thought the 89 Star Co. Bob Hamelinwas a good call. He did only have one good year and then fizzled but thecall did show insight.I gave the book 2 stars because the reading wasenjoyable and informative. The picks were just terrible. In their defense Iwould like to say that most of these cards are from the "era of massproduction" and as we all no scarcity as well as popularity drive acards price. I didn't have time to price out all the cards in the book andthen compare them to todays values, but maybe that would be a good raineyday project. If I do I will update this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Card for Every Year!
This book shows the front side of every Topps baseball card that was created from their inception in 1951 through 1990, when the book was published. It also includes the "Traded Series" for those players drafted or traded during said year. Each year has a section of what happened in the season during said year, and has a quiz. The quiz asks a question, and the answer is told in the form of a number, which correlates to a specific players card number for that year. This book is a joy to have, especially at looking into the past and seeing the players of yesteryear. The book is heavy, as it is almost 11 pounds, but it is well worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Topps Complete Baseball Card Collection In A Book!
Excellent View of all Topps Baseball Cards Presented Yearly of each cards front face reduced to approx. 20% of the actual size on nice premium glosy thick paper.Hoping that someday maybe the size (larger) and back side of each card can be made in the same format. For now the next best thing to actually owning the entire collection which (Depending of course on condtion) could cost approx. half million dollars. An excellent gift for any baseball card fan of years gone by to re-live there child-hood memories in this massive volume weighting more than 10-lbs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for studying and teaching about masculinity
Bloom's well-researched study of baseball collectors in the 1980s is a wonderful text for studying and teaching about masculinity and popular culture. His book raises important questions about the crisis ofmasculinity in the latter part of the twentieth century, and the ways thatpopular culture practices like baseball card collecting both challengedand, ultimately, shored up traditional gender boundaries between men andwomen.Bloom's work also focuses extensively on the issue of nostalgia, particularly the idealized memory of 1950s American boyhoods. An accessibleand engaging tone makes this a fine text to use in popular culture classesor in gender studies classes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally something intelligently written!
As a baseball card collector for over 20 years, I have read countless articles in countless publications about baseball cards and cardcollecting.Almost every one of the has focused on either the financialaspects of the hobby or on how great it is to be a collector.John Bloomhas written a thought provoking and academic book which examines WHY wecollect.

While I do not agree with some of the authors positions, specifically about race and homoerotocism, I feel that they are wellthought out and presented. His description of the MCC, a card collectorsclub, is very similar to my own experiences in the two clubs to which Ihave belonged in the past, and offers a unique look at the pettiness andpower struggles that often arise in these organizations.

Many collectorsand hobby writers came out very strongly against this book, but I thinkthat many of them looked at Blooms' conclusions as an attack on the hobbyof card collecting. They are not.

While the academic tone of the bookcan make it difficult to read at times, the insights that it offers and thefact that it at least makes the reader THINK about the nature of collectingare reason enough to read "House of Cards".

1-0 out of 5 stars Acadamia runs amok, to make sensational, exaggerated point
Collecting baseball cards evokes memories of crisp wax paper; the assault of a preadolescent nose with the aroma of sickly sweet, often stale, powder-sugar coated bubble gum; the thrill of your first Ted Williams card; and of clothes-pinning your sixth Pedro Ramos in your bicycle spokes.

In stark contrast, Bloom's book portrays collectors in the angry, white man role; discusses the collector's insecurities about their rapidly declining social position; their disturbing attitudes toward blacks and women; and their apparent inability to get a date in high school. Why is Bloom saying such disparaging things about the people who collect baseball cards?

Bloom spent some time in the late 1980s attending baseball card shows in Minnesota. His observations at the shows, sports card shops, interviews with hobbyists, and secondary research, form the basis for this adaptation of his doctoral thesis.

Baseball card collecting can evolve from a children's hobby to an adult's business. But the hobby took on an entirely new dynamic during the Reagan years. Many American boys collected cards, and in the economic boom of the 1980s, price's escalated, and collectors found (if mom hadn't gotten there first) treasure troves in long-forgotten, old shoe boxes.Unfortunately, many believed, including Bloom, that the newfound wealth corrupted the hobby.

Bloom's typical adult collector is white, male, and lower-middle class. In turn, Bloom blames these card collectors for failed marriages, deceit, deception, the manipulation of children, the exclusion and derision of women, and distancing the races.

But is the assertion valid that adult collectors are sexist, merely because the majority are male?Similarly, are they racist because a majority are white? Is the fact that Mickey Mantle's 1952 Topps rookie card sells at a higher price than Willie Mays' 1952 card, justifiable evidence of racism among the collecting enthusiasts as the author brazenly maintains?

The impact and social ramifications of collecting baseball cards appear to be stretched beyond the realm of plausibility to make an alarming, though questionable, point. Is it possible that collecting bits of cardboard, emblazoned with the images of childhood heroes, really be the cause of this much social discord?

But the author has missed a critical point.Bloom states that the cards, in and of themselves, "are of no real consequence."Most collectors would vehemently disagree.Baseball cards derive their value by resurrecting the reminiscences of the collector's youthful heroes. There is a collective social memory which envelops the collectors and their cards. The fact that trade guides indicate that selected cards may have some extrinsic value is nice, but for the majority of collectors, not paramount. The same native affinity does not permeate collecting spoons, stamps or coins, or even football or basketball cards. The fact that these collectibles are baseball cards matters a great deal. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Okay for mainstream cards...but not for even semi-specialty collections
My wife purchased this book for me to look up my football cards from my youth. I was excited to receive it as I used to own beckett magazines as a teen to look up the prices of my cards. The problem soon became apparent, this is by no means a complete listing of prices and doesn't even come close to allowing me to look up prices for even a quarter of the cards I have. I'm sure it is okay for mainstream collections of brands such as Topps and UpperDeck but when it comes to even smaller collections of Topps specialty cards you won't be able to find them in this book, just keep that in mind. ...
