5-0 out of 5 stars Just what our homeschool needed
Our homeschool was moving right along, but we are several years in and I still didn't have the phys ed component working. It's really hard to keep two kids interested in it when you are doing basic calesthenics and running, when you're even doing it at all. I was really hoping to find a book that had games in it that could be played with as little as three people and still be active and fun. I found this book on Amazon, crossed my fingers, and ordered.
It arrived yesterday and I am so thrilled with it! Almost every page of the book has an activity. They are grouped by the sport that inspired them. And while you can't play a proper game of soccer with only three people, the activities in the book will allow me to start teaching them soccer skills and basic rules for the game, and if they are interested and want to join a team, they won't be playing catch-up. There are sections for all the major sports played in the US, as well as modified playground games (like ones based on tag and four-square). The sections set up to teach based on actual sports are laid out like simple lesson plans with the purpose of the activity, materials needed, number of players, and set-up followed by the how-to directions. The sections on playground games have several activities per page and give a good explanation on how to play.

This is not a book to use to teach the effects of and reasons for exercise. If you are looking for worksheets for your kids to fill in about calorie expenditure and major muscle groups, this is not the book. Those books are out there in one form or another, but as far as I can tell, there are no books full of activities for small groups that actually teach sports skills. I'm very, very pleased with this purchase and am spreading the word about it to my fellow homeschoolers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for a homeschooling family!
My 9 and 7-year-olds really enjoy the games presented in this book! We tried out "triple action kickball" last week, and they begged to play it again the next day! A relief to me, as I'm always scrambling to "fit in" P.E.! I got a good workout, too. Another great benefit is that my son in particular bonds with me (his mom/teacher/boss) if I'm playing an active game with him. I find that a good physical game like the ones presented so clearly in this book, really help the rest of the day go more smoothly. Thanks, Guy Bailey! Highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not perfect, but very close
I am homeschooling my 14 yr old son and needed some structure for a Physical Education program.I was hoping this book would provide me with that structure. It's not exactly what I was hoping for (a fill in the blank type of map), but it has given our P.E. program some depth. What I think it does best is acknowledge that homeschool groups can be small. There are games and sports designed for as few as two players. With this one book, I will be able to keep my son (and me) active.I will have to add other resources (rules for regulation play on team sports), but this book is a good resource for the homeschooling family.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a delightful, easy to read book...
written for homeschooling families looking to supplement their PE programs with a wider range of activities that can be used to teach children fitness, movement and sports skills.

The author, Guy Bailey, wrote The Ultimate Homeschool Physical Education Game Book after sensing such a need in homeschooling parents for activities. He has worked in Physical Education for over 22 years and desires to see children equipped "with a love of movement and the basic skills necessary to participate in an active lifestyle now and as adults."

Homeschooling parents are faced with a few specific problems when it comes to Physical Education. One is varying ages and levels of their children. Other problems facing homeschooling parents are small class sizes, a backyard vs gymnasium setting, and the lack of expensive equipment. Guy Bailey listened to homeschooling parents and came up with solutions.

The activities listed in the book need only 2-4 children and require inexpensive equipment, much of which is probably already in your home. All are easily played in your backyard and some are even suited perfectly for indoor play during winter months. Through this book he proved that quality PE games can be played with fewer children in smaller areas.

In the beginning of the book are tips for successfully using the games in a PE curriculum. The games are divided into 10 sections by the equipment used: Basketball, Football, Soccer, Softball, Raquet and Net, Recreational Sports, Playground Games, More PE Games with a Homeschool Twist, Fitness Building, Rope Jumping Activities. This allows the homeschooling parent to make use of equipment they already have on hand. Sections are followed by a glossary of terms familiar to that sport. Each game has quick listings for Purpose, Number of Players, Age Levels, Equipment, and Instructions. The games themselves are easily explained and illustrated by simple drawings. In the back of the book are Appendices that include tips for parents, National Standards in PE and where to find more information and resources.

I highly recommend the book for parents who want to get their children enthusiastic about fitness or need more excitement in their PE programs.

5-0 out of 5 stars By a physical education instructor and sports coach
The Ultimate Homeschool Physical Education Game Book by physical education instructor and sports coach Guy Bailey is a very highly recommended guide for homeschooling parents which is filled from cover to cover with games and activities designed to teach children fitness, sports skills, and the joy of exercise. From simplified versions of traditional favorites such as basketball, football, soccer, and softball, to variants of tag, rope jumping, and playground games such as kickball, The Ultimate Homeschool Physical Education Game Book is an invaluable and "user friendly" resource which is dearly needed in a world overly saturated with television and other passive entertainments. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!Very nice
I have recently been selected to be the Athletic Director for a private school and I was told that I would be responsible for overseeing all students who participate in our athleitcs as well as to come up with a physical education curriculum for those who do not participate in the sports.I also was told I would interact with the elementary physical education teacher to help with developing a curriculum too.I bought this book for that, and I was really amazed on how well this book is.It breaks it down into three levels:Kindergarten to 2nd grade, 3rd to 4th grade, and 5th to 6th grade, and has lesson plans for 36 weeks. It breaks the plans down to the objective, instructional activities, fitness devleopment, lesson focus, etc.It will make my job a lot easier. Now, I need to find a book just like this for the middle school program. This book also has tear out pages, if you wish to put it into a binder.Very good book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Only a few changes from previous edition
This is an absolutely terrific resource for all P.E. teachers. The lesson plans are easy to follow and it maps out exactly what to do for each lesson.I have the lesson plan book - thirteenth edition. This sixteenth edition was almost exactly the same. They took out relay activities and added in pedometer and fitness skills in a few lessons. If you have an earlier edition, I would not bother buying this new one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yep!
The description for this item was very accurate adn honest. There was minor wear on the corners, but still very useable. Well worth it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fine book with a notable exception
As an overview of the philosophy of sport from Egypt and Ancient Greece to the present time, this is a fine volume. But it is breathtaking that in a review of the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich the author saw fit to recall "Notable" performances in track and field events, gymnastics, swimming and more and yet managed to leave out the most notable and historic contest of all: the gold medal basketball game between Russia and the United States. This was the United States' first "loss," since basketball's inclusion in 1936, though they were swindled out of their gold after officials put time back on the clock on three consecutive occasions.

In a spirit of solidarity and righteous indignation the American team refused to accept their silver medals.

How can this episode--which is arguably the greatest instance of official bias
in sports history--not be recognized in an objective history of this sort?

This book was in the condition that I expect when it arrived.I was very satisfied with this purchase and order.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for an Elementary Physical Education Teacher
I'm a physical education teacher and I noticed this book on another web site. The book is full of ideas for you to use for your students during class. The book breaks down the work into specific chapters from posters, to concepts to fitness goals. The best part of the book is the CD that has all of the information ready to be placed on your computer so that you don't have to recreate the forms yourself. The downside is that the CD is a little hard to use because of the way they organized it but with a little patience you can find any of the assessment tools from the pages of the book. ... Product Description
Finally, a curriculum geared for 4- to 8-year-olds!

Through Physical Education for Young Children, you can

  • learn about the unique needs of 4- to 8-year-olds and write developmentally appropriate lesson plans to meet these needs,
  • provide a logical progression of movement skills and awareness of the elements of movement (space, shape, time, force, flow, and rhythm), and
  • develop kids' motor skills, manipulative skills, and fitness while making connections across the curriculum.

Physical Education for Young Children: Movement ABCs for the Little Ones author Rae Pica is constantly asked by elementary physical education teachers, "What am I supposed to do with the little ones?" Most college preparatory programs don't address the issue, either, but Pica takes it on in Physical Education for Young Children: Movement ABCs for the Little Ones, coming to the aid of teachers who are stumped when it comes to the developmental needs and abilities of young children.

Physical Education for Young Children places the focus squarely where it needs to be: on the fundamentals. The book provides teachers with the following tools:

  • A logical progression of movement skills, including the ABCs of movement, body-part identification, and nonlocomotor, locomotor, and manipulative skills
  • Awareness of the elements of movement: space, shape, time, force, flow, and rhythm
  • An understanding of the developmental differences between younger students and their older counterparts
  • Guidance in understanding the unique needs of 4- to 8-year-olds and writing developmentally appropriate lesson plans to meet those needs while making connections across the curriculum
  • Many activities that develop motor skills, manipulative skills, fitness, and the understanding of the elements of movement

In addition, Physical Education for Young Children offers guidance in teaching across subject areas to provide an interdisciplinary approach, offers sample lesson plans to meet the unique needs of the little ones, and lists resources for children's music, equipment, and props.

Chapter 1explores aspects of physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development as they pertain to teaching 4- to 8-year-olds. Chapter 2helps teachers understand how to use what they know about young children to create and maintain a positive atmosphere in the gym. Chapters 3 and 4delve into movement concepts and an appropriate progression for acquiring motor skills.

Chapter 5covers developmentally appropriate fitness for the little ones, and chapter 6addresses manipulative skills. These skills, which receive the greatest attention in most PE programs, are saved for late in the book because kids need to master basic locomotor and nonlocomotor skills before focusing on manipulating objects.

Chapter 7 offers guidance on linking the activities in the gym with those in the classroom. This not only generates enthusiasm among the kids, but it also helps PE teachers serve as advocates for the physical education field. The appendixes provide sample lesson plans and a variety of resources.

With Physical Education for Young Children, PE teachers will no longer have to ask what to do with the little ones. They will know--and they will be able to build a physical education curriculum that serves the unique needs of 4- to 8-year-olds. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A dynamic guide for the physical education professional
This book covers all the bases that teachers need for implementing a health-related physical education curriculum to promote lifelong fitness. It is for use with a K-12 physical education curriculum.

In the simplest terms, it's a teacher's guide that's based on current science and is very up-to-date.

One thing I especially like about the guide is that it gives the teacher cautions about certain exercises. For example, there are resistance training cautions.

A PE teacher certainly does not want to be responsible for allowing a student to injure himself. So you learn how to develop a fitness program that is safe while, at the same time, providing powerful benefits.

The authors say, ". . . You should . . . seek additional training specific to working with children and adolescents in developing muscular strength and endurance in a safe and effective manner."
