3-0 out of 5 stars Sigh
Good product, but it fails in the same way many gaming products fail: they tease you but then don't tell you everything there is to know.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good look into a fascinating part of Eberron
As a DM, I really loved reading this suppliment. There are many maps, descriptions and side bars that allow you to truely customize Xen'drik for your players and your game. It's specific enough to keep you true to the setting, but open enough to make Xen'drik unique for each gaming group.

4-0 out of 5 stars Xen'drik
This book is great for anyone playing in the Eberron world of Dungeons and Dragons. The book covers anything you need to know about the ancient continent. There are some great new items, 3 new prestige classes (1 specific to warforged), new spells, artifact spells, and new artifacts. There is finally a map of Xen'drik, that shows the lands features. There is alot of information on stormreach and a map of the city. There are even new monsters to encounter and Xen'drik adventuring ideas. This book is great for PCs travelling in Xen'drik or DMs who want all the information on Xen'drik for the gaming sessions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Xen'Drik...is good!
I recently bought a copy of this book. I have read some reviews downplaying it but i give it a four and a half star rating.

First of all, the book is presented in a nice way. Like all the other Eberron books it looks nice. I also like the way all the encounters and sample local's are created not in a set location but with much room to change them and locate them anywhere on the continent you please. Basically it them showing you how to do it but the world is still yours.

The book is small though and wouldnt pay full price...lucky for amazon!

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Promise
The excitement built around the mysterious continent of Xen'Drik raised my anticipation and hopes for this newest Eberron release.Baker and others wrote great pieces about the continent, much of the book outlined possible hooks for adventures, including specific destinations and NPC creation/design.The PrC list was small, and those special classes were shallow, too.Feats and spells must be lost on the Giants' Island, because I couldn't find many of them.I believe more detail and playable information about the drow was located in Races of Eberron.I like the book, but feel it's price was too high for the value of information contained within.I would have preferred a softbound book and a smaller price.I found the artwork and design nicely done, but the information for players and DMs faile to achieve potential. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Secrets of Sarlonna Review
I bought this book to expand my Eberron game, and that's just what it did. There was something the psuedo-steampunk Eberron Campaign Setting was missing, and that's Asia. That's right, the Sarlonna world is essentially Asia, except its full of kalashtar and quori, magic like Korvairre, except with a religious flare to it.Its a nice addition to any collection, I only gave it 4 stars because of all the fluff involved (details which don't actually change gameplay.).

4-0 out of 5 stars Sarlona: A land of secrecy and wonder
Secrets of Sarlona was a pretty good read. From the many different countries and cultures, to the cult-like infulences the Inspired have on the people on the gigantic country of Rierdra. Not only that, but for a book this size, it goes into some key details about each culture (like "a day in the life" thing), important NPCs, new Psionic powers, interesting feats that work with and against psionics, and new weapons.

My only dissapointments were the lack of info on ALL the Quori, instead only giving me three castes, and merely mentioning two others. and a lack of new monsters, overall; only a small number of them.

But I digress. Secrets of Sarlona was a good read, and an interesting adaptation to the Eberron world.

Now to get my hands on Secrets of Xen'Drik.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good resource for Eberron Players and DMs
For anyone interested in psionics canon in Eberron, I'd highly recommend this book. There are a lot of NPCs and political information as well as some weapons and feats that may prove useful. It seems a little bit of a throw-back to forgotten realms style regional modules.

Downsides for me was that the material was very vague or limited, geographically, but fairly detailed politically. For example, they'll spend a tiny paragraph for a whole region that is leaking chaos into Eberron in Adar and has a lot of fantasy potential, then spend 5 pages talking about a political group that really, after reading it, isn't very interesting or have clear goals or themes.

For crunch, the PrCs and quori-related stuff seems a little tame...a lot more flavor than bang.Enough of the artwork is mediocre to remove it from the list of strengths.

I think I would have liked the book to be...bigger.There is a lot of material to cover and a lot of it gets short treatment or no treatment at all, but still a good book especially if you are interested in non-Khorvaire Eberron, as I am.

4-0 out of 5 stars Secrets of Sarlona
I think this is an excelent product.I like the ideas that the dreaming dark present as villians and this book expands on those ideas. Both in how they would be used, and how to use those who would oppose them.I also appricate the inclusion of new quori that can be used with empty vessels to make enlightened. Finally I am a huge fan of psionics and many rule books include very little additional material on psionics, so I am excited about the additional psionic content in Secrets of Sarlona.

3-0 out of 5 stars Limited Use
It is a very good book if you are running a campaign in Eberron on, or at least heavily involving the continent of Sarlona. Other than that It has very little use.

A few new prestige classes, feats, and weapons are the most it offers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my top picks for Game Design for DM's! But BEWARE
This book is amazing and fascinating it has charts that will help bring any corruptions, chaos, or possessed game to new levels. Even in other realms and other universes the information in this book is very helpful for design. BUT BEWARE the resellers and their greedy fingers, ive seen this book go for 200 dollars. which is unreasonable considering this book originally sold for 39.99 and is all over the torrent sites. BUT if you have to pay to get your hands on one, your not gonna be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!
The Warhammer Book of Corruption is easily one of the best RPG books I've ever read. I would compare it to Monte Cook's Book of Vile Darkness, or either of D&D's fiendish codices in terms of horrific, otherworldly weirdness, but the Book of Corruption seems to go beyond even those volumes. The author is unafraid to list, hint at, or describe in detail when necessary, the sort of strange and disturbing things, cults, items, mutations, and monsters present in the Old World; which goes far to portray the setting as the frightening place that it is, so that the reader can see why and how the peasantry have the unsettling superstitious customs that they do (which are also talked about throughout the book). It also does the task of revealing clearly WHY any otherwise normal person might be tempted or coerced into joining a cult, and provides numerous adventure hooks for how an adventuring team would encounter one. All of these aspects seem to flow together perfectly - without spending too many pages on any one facet - to provide a very realistic, believable, and dark setting.
With all of the information on mutations (176 results on the primary table), and on the nature of chaos, corruption, and evil itself, this book certainly has philosophical and literary value suitable for other roleplaying games as well; and it can easily be used as a sourcebook for D&D, Ravenloft, Dark*Matter, World of Darkness, or any other RPG that has darkness, evil or fear at its core.
As a collector my opinion is that this is simply one of the best books out there. To portray realistic, alienistic horror is often a difficult thing, and the Tome of Corruption does the job flawlessly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully vile!
This vile tome is packed with foul goodness. The massive list of mutations alone is worth the price of the book. All kinds of foul things for the fiendish GM to throw at their players! Be warned though as just a brief glimpse at the pages of this thrice damned work will cause you the loss of your sanity!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Big Book of Chaotic Things
This book provides so much info on things gamemasters need to know toto write a cool Chaos adventure. Norsca, daemons, beastmen, more nasties, and mutations and cults. So much fun. Great to read and slightly disturbing. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best book about Chaos in Warhammer written to this day.
I have read most if not ALL the books about Chaos in Warhammer Fantasy. I read the two tomes of Realms of Chaos. I also read Complete Liber Chaotica, WHFB Beast of Chaos and WHFB Hordes of Chaos. This one is by far the most complete on the topic and the most pleasant and interesting to read followed closely by Complete Liber Chaotica. I cannot recommand you this book enough for every fan of Warhammer Fantasy (RPG players or NOT). Even the readers interested by Fantastic universe could find this reading interesting.

Tome of Corruption add also a lot of new content concerning Chaos that have never been written so far in other Warhammer books. It push the topic much more further and embrace it widely. It cover in detail many old and new aspects.

You will find in this book the following chapters:

A first Part: The Enemy Within

1- Chaos in the Old World

2- The lost and the damned

3- Catalogue of Change (MORE than 150 mutations. A general random table and 4 random tables adapted for each Chaos Gods.)

5- Objects of Chaos

A second Part: Shadows of Chaos

6- The Places between: Life in the wilderness

7- Beasts of Chaos (and the template to play one as PC...)

8- Menagerie of the Strange

9- Defenders of the Empire (Some words about the Witch Hunters and the other enemies of Chaos)

2-0 out of 5 stars The last nail in the coffin.
No it's not horrible. It's not good either. After this final dissapointement, I will not be buying any more of the "new" WFRP material.

What you get, ultimately-is a sample "kingdom", series of tables to generate a random area (All justifed by the flimsy excuse that the area is " in constant a state of flux"). And more (unnecessary) careers (do you really need a Cenobite Career when already existing careers adequately fill that role?).

In it's favor it does have a certian "old School " charm-in that endless tables, often resulting in nonsensical results way. But honestly I could knock out a map, and the same level of detail with out it.

In the end it lacks any substance and is useful only if you are "stuck" for ideas, or like rolling for random results.

Proof that less is not more....

Anyway, it is among the weakest in a line of so-so support matrial.

4-0 out of 5 stars campaign sourcebook
This book is well written and full of great ideas for running a campaign in a difficult and politically unstable area. It's not like the other regional sourcebooks because it really only gives you the nuts and bolts to create your own region. If you're looking for a setting to run a campaign in without too much work look elsewhere, if you're looking to make a region your own and create pretty much the setting you want to play then pick it up.Would have been nice to have a slightly bigger map showing this area in relation to Brettonia and the Empire etc. but that's a small point really.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for Warhammer that can also be useful for other RPG setting
Unlike the other books of Warhammer Fantasy rpg, this one is set more like a tool book that allow you to create randomly a whole region. To achieve this, this book contain a system to generate randomly the geography of your region. Then it provide numerous random tables to determine ancient ruins, types of menaces, regional history, individual Princes, the personality of those Princes, their relations, the communities set in the region and the hazards that can be found on your random map.

Because this book is not oriented on the definition of a Warhammer specific background, in other words, because it takes the form of a tool book offering a system to create and populate randomly a whole region with geography, history, encounters and politics this book have also for advantage to be useful for other RPG setting such as D&D. The conversion needed to do so is minimal to none.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great World Builder
With a wealth of helpful charts and ideas, and extensive background for running a Border Princes game, this supplement is a must for anyone who wants to create their own Warhammer experience. New careers, insights, and game aids make this book very excellent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stake Out Your Own Corner of the Borderlands
The Renegade Crows: A Guide to the Border Princes hardbound supplement for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay is one of the better supplements available for the roleplaying system - and has a great deal of information useful for any campaign or fantasy setting.

That said, this is not your typical game supplement. While it does focus on a specific region - the Borderlands to the southeast of the Empire - from the begining the book sets the scene that this is a fractious, uncontrolled region, comprised of myriad smaller regions vying for power or looking to secure their niche. As such, the topography, geography and borders are largely irrelevant.

Other than some cursory information about a few standards in the Border Pinces, the bulk of the book focuses on how to create your own region within the tapestry of the Border Princes overall -- using an incredibly robust, detailed step-by-step process to breath life into your very own corder of the Borderlands.

The region creation system helps an enterprising GM create their own vibrant area -- geographical features, towns, villages, riverways, and scores of interesting oddities... an abandoned shrine, a mystic temple, a ruined city from a long lost age. There are rules to further elaborate on and detail each of these features... How was this region ruined? What monsters or threat lurk in the area? Who rules the area?

There is an excellent walkthrough of the creation process, and a fully-developed region ready for use, but it's quite fun to grab some dice and a sheet of graph paper and start plotting your own map. As the region takes shape, ideas for adventures spring to mind. The charts and tables for creating intrigue, rulers, conflicts and the other details are incredibly useful and easily applied to other regions in the Warhammer setting.

My only disappointment is that it is a relatively short book - for the price point, I would have welcomed another 10-16 pages of content detailing existing material I could immediately access rather than generate on my own. Still, a relatively minor quibble given the excellent resources contained inside this tome. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars As useful as the Core Rulebooks
While everything mentioned in this book is within the 3 core books, it can be time consuming to look through the books if you can't find a specific rule or chart. This book is organized so that almost any rule you need to know can be looked up quickly and easily. It covers basic rules (such as Checks, Action Types, Saving Throws) as well rules that you might not have memorized, because they come up less (Poison, Underwater Combat, Invisibility, Breath Weapons, etc). As well as finding rules through the Table of Contents, there's an Index begging right on the second page, in case you aren't sure what section a rule might fall under. The book itself is not heavy and fairly thin, so it isn't difficult to carry around, but in no way does that mean it doesn't cover that many rules. Each section tells you what you need to know about a rule without wasting space on the page, leaving room for more rules in the book without making it the size of an encyclopedia. I have this book nearby during any session or campaign, regardless if I'm a DM or a player. Everyone who plays even remotely often should have this book. (To note, this is in NO WAY a replacement for any of the core rulebooks. It just makes life easier!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for 3.5 players
While this won't replace your old rule books, this will become your "go to" rulebook for most rules questions. What makes this book invaluable is that it is not merely a reprinting of some of the rules, rather a rules collection that incorporates updates to each rules entry from the PHB, DMG, MM, BoED, CAdv, CWar, CArc, Frostburn, HoH, LM, MIC, PH2, RoDest, RoStone, RoWild, Sandstorm, Stormwrack and Tome of Battle as well as the faq and errata. Now, when you look up the Hide skill for example, you simply look in one place, not the original source (PHB e.g.) then several other books, trying to find the one that had the update in question or the faq and errata to clarify the rules for sneaking up or moving between cover. Concepts like Precision damage, grappling, et al, are thoroughly clarified. This makes adjudication at the table timely and accurate. For 3.5 fans, book this is a must; right up there with the PHB, DMG and Spell Compendium.

3-0 out of 5 stars Part of the Collection
This book isn't something that any D&D player couldn't live without; however, it does have the occasional updated rules entry or consolidated information on a particular mechanic.Sometimes it's nice to have but for the most part, I just purchased it to help fill out my collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handiest D&D 3.5 Reference ever
Well, I'm quite impressed with the Rules Compendium for Dungeons and Dragons, 3.5 Edition. It's especially handy for DMs who have argumentative players. It's one stop shopping for looking up exactly how grappling works, or whether or not an antimagic field can be destroyed by dispel magic. My only complaint is that it doesn't have some rules in it I was expecting, but they do refer to the Player's Handbook for some of the more detailed things about movement in combat. If you have the two of those, you won't need to argue about rules again.

5-0 out of 5 stars 3.5 Rules Compendium

4-0 out of 5 stars A look within the Tome
The Tome of Salvation is a good companion to the Tome of Corruption. In the fact that it gives the reader an insight to not only the many factions of gods in the warhammer world. But the many ways that there priest should act.The one point that I feel is lacking in the book.Is the lack of information on the Dwarfs and Elves priesthood.Beyond that, the book is amazing and very much a must have to any Roll Player in the Warhammer World.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent sourcebook
I was very impressed with this sourcebook, both from a roleplay and mechanics point of view. Having played Warhammer Fantasy since second edition, I have been very happy with the level of detail balance versus playability of this editions books in general.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read
Tome of salvation (ToS) offered me a great and in-depth insight into the mechanics of religion in the Warhammer Fantasy universe. ToS lets you understand why the inhabitants of the old world embrace religion and also has a very detailed section for each faith. Its very interesting and Iam very happy i purchased this title. I highly reccommend the ToS to experienced and hardcore readers of Warhammer Fantasy that crave for more knowledge about the old world.

Overall, Illustraions are great and a great read - 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Warhammer
Classic RPG. I prefer this game to AD&D. Game mechanics are more simple which makes it quicker to learn. The career advancement is much more interesting and I like being able to build your characters statistics in a more intelligent manner. Unfortunately most people are sheep and unwilling to give most other games a chance. If more people who play AD&D would give this game a chance and play a few sessions of it, I know there would be less people playing AD&D.

5-0 out of 5 stars The World of Warhammer comes to life even more!
I personally think that this book truly helps give new life to the world of Warhammer. Other books list gods and pantheons and what spells they get and stick to that. But this book gives you important holidays, gestures, minor local gods, people's feelings, different orders and radical beliefs, how other's see elder races's gods, etc. It actually gives you the means to show why religion is more than just a skill bonus or special power. These are gods who are prayed to when the people are troubled, who races and kingdoms go to war for, and who willingly (or unwillingly) die or be executed for. It shows once more Warhammer's dedication to a roleplaying game.

And yes, there are still very, very cool new rules, careers, and spells and such. Very sweet book. ... Read more

Lord of the Iron Fortress is the seventh adventure in a series of eight designed to take players from the beginner to advanced levels of play (although no other adventures need be played to play this one). Lord of the Iron Fortress contains an additional 16 pages of content for the same price as earlier adventures.

3-0 out of 5 stars good source material
This is a standard WOTC module release, not fantastic and not dull either.I recommend it mostly as a great source material for Archeron. It does have some enjoyable encounters in it and it is an enjoyable module side adventure for characters who have been gaming together in a continuing storyline for a while.I would recommend trying to find this for a price under 10 dollars if possible,to spend anymore than that would be better spent on one of the more recent hardbound WOTC adventures(except for undermountain;see my other reviews)

3-0 out of 5 stars AN OK MID TO HIGH LEVEL ADVENTURE
Lord of the Iron Fortress is a 48 page, soft cover adventure booklet from Wizards of the Coast. It's geared for 15th level or so characters. The very thin plot centers on some forgemasters who have died and they are unable to be risen from the dead. Now why the characters would be concerned about smiths, and why they'd be deserving of being brought back to life is beyond me.But hey...if that's what it takes to get adventuring then so be it.The book uses four different chracters as samples that can be played if you don't have characters of 15th level.Never in over 25 years of playing has anyone ever used the stock characters...what's the point? They are good to use for the DM to see how the actual PC's compare and then tailor the difficulty of the adveture accordingly.

This is a plane-hopping adventure so be prepared to visit the first level of Archeron where the party will travel to the Iron Fortress. If you're not all into plane-hopping, I supposed you could just as easily set this somewhere on your own world whether it's the Forgotten Realms or one of your own creation. At the fortress it becomes a decent, but relatively standard dungeon-crawl from there. There's a couple of new monsters and magic items as well as one new spell. The art is very good as our the maps. Not the most original adventure in the world but a fairly decent way to waste a couple of nights playing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice concept; so-so execution
I'll try to summarize:

1) the adventure idea is excellent, full of nice ideas.

2) the opponents are nicely conceived and well built using the 3rd edition rules

3) the maps are small and hard to use, and the staircases connecting the various levels of the fortress don't match.

4) the 'petitioner' forgers lack dramatic flair and interest

5) the fortress seems too mundane, given the fantastic nature of the idea.

Recommended as a source of ideas: I'd keep the concept, the characters, and design my own fortress and petitioner resolution.

Regards,

3-0 out of 5 stars Veteran horror GM says...average
I've been running various horror themed tabletop RPGs for over a decade. This book is decent, but lacked a lot of depth about the nature of horror and fear that would benefit people who have never played or written a horror campaign. If you want to learn how to write good horror adventures for a tabletop RPG - go read through the rulebooks for Call of Cthulhu, then read a couple of H.P. Lovecraft's short stories.
This book gets 3 stars because it is above average quality for a D20 supplement book, and provides a base level of info for someone new to horror - just to get a basic idea. However, any long time veterans of horror rpgs will really only find value in the "specific to D&D" material (new classes, spells, items). To properly WRITE a horror adventure study Call of Cthulhu rulebook (virtually a how-to for writing horror adventures including a lot of the what's and why's) Think of Call of Cthulhu the "phonetics" of horror, while this supplement is more of a simple vocab lesson that becomes much more relevant when you understand WHY its scary, and WHAT can make it scarier - yet still be fun.
Those new to horror will probably like it since writing for a horror campaign is rather different than the usual D&D style - so this supplement will seem quite informative, fresh, and often inspirational. Once you delve into Lovecraft's writings you will then see a bigger picture, and realise the limited scope of this book. It's really a matter of how good and intense you want your adventures to be.

4-0 out of 5 stars great book
I added some of the ideas in this book to our campain, and the players love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for both player and DM
I happened to see this book at a local book store and as a DM/player I thought I would check it out.I am a huge fan of horror and other creepy-crawly things, so this book really helped out my campaigns. The sections that I enjoy the most are the storytelling elements and taint/corruption.I do not like mostly hack'n'slash campaigns, so to do side quests that require thought instead of an axe means I have to come up with new ideas. There are pages of scary situations to put characters in (i.e. your character wakes up for breakfast but is no longer hungry. There is a taste of blood in his mouth.)Taint and corruption are acquired when characters enter a particularly evil area. When a certain number of points of taint/corruption is reached, symptoms appear, such as boils, bleeding, deafness, etc.

The PC classes are a nice touch, as the Necromancer is long overdue and the Archivist is a nice alternative to the cleric.Prestige classes, new spells, feats, and a couple of monsters round out the book.(I particularly like the Angel of Decay)

Is it short compared to other titles? Yes.But as many reviewers point out, much of the new Wizards material is filler.Heroes of Horror is lean and mean and gets the job done.Enough of me.Go buy it.Now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Supplement
I found this supplement to be one of the best released for D&D in the new millenium. Despite the fact that it's somewhat short, it's worth every penny. All the new base and prestige classes are excellent, but I instantly fell in love with the Dread Necromancer. A necromancer as a base class was long overdo, and the undead transformation is a very cool aspect of the class. If you love D&D and horror or thriller stories, this is a definite buy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some useful ideas but nothing exceptional
This book has some useful ideas but nothing really great in my opinion. I do have better Ravenloft material concerning horror campaigns. ... Read more

During Derrick¡¦s final game the events of his son¡¦s adventure unfold, and the magic that began with Bud finds its way into the events of the day, and into the very heart of the pitcher, returning to him something that he thought was lost forever, and altering the course of his entire life. The end of Bud¡¦s adventure and Derrick¡¦s final pitch of the game occur at the same time, in a way that is both magical and heartwarming. It is a story of a father¡¦s love for his son, a small boy¡¦s for his grandfather, and the magic that is still in all of us, no matter what the age.It is a story for baseball fans from eight to eighty, or anyone who just enjoys a good old-fashioned fairy tale. ...
