Product Description

Catastrophic Injuries in High School and College Sports provides extensive recommendations for reducing catastrophic injuries, preventing deaths in athletic programs, and making sports safer and more enjoyable.

Data compiled for the first time in one convenient source, this timely resource is based on results of more than 10 years of study by the National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research. The authors discuss what types of injuries are most prevalent, who sustains the injuries, and why and where they occur. Unlike most of the material available in this area, Catastrophic Injuries in High School and College Sports includes both men's and women's individual and team sports.

The authors bring reality to the statistics by presenting case reports of catastrophic injuries at the high school and college level. Readers will learn

- how head and spine injuries occur;
- the frequency and causes of deaths in athletes;
- catastrophic injury data in football;
- how injuries are sustained in team sports--soccer, basketball, ice hockey, baseball, and lacrosse;
- the incidence of injuries in individual sports--gymnastics, swimming, wrestling, track and field, and cheerleading; and
- general guidelines for injury prevention as well as sport-specific recommendations.

Each chapter concludes with helpful references and tables of relevant statistics.

Catastrophic Injuries in High School and College Sports is the eighth volume in the HK Sport Science Monograph Series.

Product Description
Intercollegiate athletic programs continue to grow to financially, physically, and ethically challenged levels, despite institutions' stated priorities to the contrary. Organizational theories offer lenses for understanding why colleges and universities appear to make athletics decisions that do not seem to be in their interests. Exploring the forces—structural, legal, social and cultural, and market—external to the institution leads to an understanding of the environment’s role in constraining campus leaders’ choices.

The challenge is how to reap educational, social, and economic benefits from sports programs without harming the institution's academic and moral integrity. This volume explores how relatively independent forces constrain the ability of institutional, athletics, and faculty leaders to limit perceived excesses in the growth of intercollegiate athletics programs on their campuses and nationally. Academic and athletic cultures; historical precedent; external organizations and constituencies; external laws and regulations; and markets for athletics-related materials, entertainment, student-atheletes, and professionals: all bring outside forces to bear on the college culture, leadership, and decision making. This monograph explores how the unintended interactions of these forces constrain campus leadership of intercollegiate athletics and consider the resulting policy and leadership implications. It examines the unique historical role of football—and its associated commercialization and culture of masculinity—as shaping the foundational structure and regulation of college sports.  The monograph concludes with campus leadership strategies and recommendations.

This is Volume 30, Issue 6 of the of the ASHE Higher Education Report series. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Scrimmage of Values

Suzanne E. Estler, with Laurie J. Nelson, delivers something appealingly different, a scholarly monograph without monotone. "Who Calls The Shots? Sports and University Leadership, Culture, and Decision Making" spotlights how higher education officials rationalize ornate and costly intercollegiate athletic programs, and the resulting challenges to consistency with the core missions of their institutions.

Estler's extensive research finds answers in a net of social, cultural, legal and economic history, 19th century to almost yesterday, revealing the mix of motives evolved amongcelebrants of intercampus sports. Stakeholders these days include student athletes, faculty, alumni, administrators, spectators, also the National Collegiate Athletic Association and a host of other agencies, conferences and pseudo-regulatory outfits, plus a nasty assortment ofprofit-sucking entrepreneurs (this reviewer's characterization, not Estler's), all of them flexing muscles in this sweat-sock corner of the entertainment industry. Alma mater aims for a basketful of prizes (everyone gets something): enhanced enrollments, money, strengthened endowments, pumped-up campus loyalty, money, national attention, money, political clout, and money, to name a few.

Estler examines the hard-hitting influences of football, in its various domains, on standards applied to all collegiate sports, and enlightens about player, coach and athletics administrator issues of gender and racial equality in higher education settings. She details plenty of wise recommendations to refocus perceptions of college sports opportunities, currently viewed, as she says, "...through a window in the gym rather than one in the campus library."

An Associate Professor of Higher Educational Leadership (U. Maine), Estler scores big, making convincing points with elegance. The book is an easy read. This reviewer would love to set her loose on many other vexing issues of intercollegiate athletics.

Editorial Review

Product Description
Big-time college sports embodies the ideals of amateurism and provides an important complement to university education. Or so its apologists would have us believe. As Andrew Zimbalist shows in this unprecedented analysis, college sports is really a massively commercialized industry based on activities that are often irrelevant and even harmful to education. Zimbalist combines groundbreaking empirical research and a talent for storytelling to provide a firm, factual basis for the many arguments that currently rage about the goals, history, structure, incentive system, and legal architecture of college sports. He paints a picture of a system in desperate need of reform and presents bold recommendations to chart a more sensible future.

Zimbalist begins by showing that today's problems are nothing new--that schools have been consumed for more than a century by debates about cheating, commercialism, and the erosion of academic standards. He then takes us into the world of the modern student athlete, explaining the incentives that, for example, encourage star athletes to abandon college for the pros, that create such useless courses as "The Theory of Basketball," and that lead students to ignore classes despite the astronomical odds against becoming a professional athlete. Zimbalist discusses the economic and legal aspects of gender equity in college sports. He assesses the economic impact of television and radio contracts and the financial rewards that come from winning major championships. He examines the often harmful effects of corporate sponsorship and shows that, despite such sponsorship, most schools run their athletic programs at a loss. Zimbalist also considers the relevance of antitrust laws to college sports and asks whether student athletes are ultimately exploited by the system.

Zimbalist's provocative recommendations include eliminating freshman eligibility for sports, restricting coaches' access to "sneaker money" from corporations, and ending the hypocrisy about professionalism by allowing teams to employ a quota of non-students as well as to receive funding from the pro leagues. A mixture of lively anecdotes, hard economic data, cogent arguments, and clear analysis, Unpaid Professionals will revitalize debate about a subject close to the hearts and minds of millions of Americans. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A valuable study but...
This is a valuable study of college sports.Zimbalist shows how much money is really lost by schools, and how foolish they are to pursue dreams of glory in college sports.

The one problem with the book is that theauthor, a college professor, really writes like one.It is often hard tofigure out what he is talking about, but if you hang in there, when you dofind out, it is usually worth it.

4-0 out of 5 stars In-depth review of the economics of college athletics
This book should be read by anyone working in or with college athletics as well as fans that want to understand the "business" behind the games.The author takes a view of the subject from many angles.Thechapter dealing in the profit or loss of athletic departments is veryenlightening particularly as it deals with the lack of accounting standardconformity.

In the last chapter the author recommends 10 steps to curethe problems.Frankly, I didn't find them compelling and generally notworkable.This is a thought provoking read if you have interest in thesubject but should not be purchased for entertainment purposes as it readsmore like a business analysis. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great book, with real information
Even though I was a student at Marshall U. from 1967 to 1971, an advid supporter of M.U. sports, and even tried to play a little football there in 1967,I was really surprised to learn what exactly went on at Marshall in the late 1960's and early 1970's.The recent movie WE ARE MARSALL, did not touch on some of the real problems MU was having in its football program along with its other sports.This book explains why the faculty and others wanted to drop the MU football, not the the story-line as presented in the "Hollywood-version" "true story" movie.I was their in that time frame, and I did not remember some of the details as displayed in the movie, but when I read this book all those rumors I really heard in 1969, 1970, & 1971(that I had forgotten about over time), came back to me, and finally made sense.
This book is great and I wish it had come out before the movie.This books presented a better story-line, as it dealt with the truth, and if filmmakers were so inclined, this story would have probably made a better movie. ... Read more

Product Description
In this compellingly argued and deeply personal book, respected sports historian Michael Oriard--who was himself a former second-team All-American at Notre Dame--explores a wide range of trends that have changed the face of big-time college football and transformed the role of the student-athlete.

Oriard considers such issues as the politicization of football in the 1960s and the implications of the integration of college football. The heart of the book examines a handful of decisions by the NCAA in the early seventies--to make freshmen eligible to play, to lower admission standards, and, most critically, to replace four-year athletic scholarships with one-year renewable scholarships--that helped transform student-athletes into athlete-students and turned the college game into a virtual farm league for professional football.

Oriard then traces the subsequent history of the sport as it has tried to grapple with the fundamental contradiction of college football as both extracurricular activity and multi-billion-dollar mass entertainment. The relentless necessity to pursue revenue, Oriard argues, undermines attempts to maintain academic standards, and it fosters a football culture in which athletes are both excessively entitled and exploited.

As a former college football player, Oriard brings a unique perspective to his topic, and his sympathies are always with the players and for the game. This original and compelling study will interest everyone concerned about the future of college football. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars no future for the SCHOLAR-athlete?
Michael Oriard, a former Notre Dame and Kansas City Chief player writes, what is essentially a history of big-time college football from the 60's to the beginnings of today's big bowl championships. For those who believe in a scholar athlete he says proposing reforms is a fool's task.
There are some interesting charts and statistics included that compare and show SAT scores , graduation rates, the college program's expenses and revenues.
He includes some interesting points: how the jocks of the 60's became the law and order types - the straight guys as opposed to the hippies and protestors, even the NCAA supported the Vietnam War. The problems of integrating college football, and the beginnings of player protests are covered. He sums up a huge factor in the change of college football because ofthe introduction of the one year scholarship where it was contingent on the coach's satisfaction with the athlete, not his academic scholarship. The grade scandals are covered as is the player's growing sense of entitlement and bad, even criminal behavior.

All of this is not news for anyone who even half way listens to the sports news, but it is somewhat of an eye-opener to see the facts gathered here. It can be a depressing book for those with an optimistic and glorified picture of college football; but anyone interested in sports, especially football and even the social history of the changes brought about by the 60's might enjoy reading this book. ... It is so coolto see athletes with the same dreams, beliefs, problems, and aspirations. I have told my friends about the book, and there is a line to get it afterI have finished it.Thanks again for providing a book that can reach,teach, and motivate an athlete

4-0 out of 5 stars A Different Perspective
What I found so interesting and worthwhile about this book was theauthor's unfliching and focused desire to let people see and feel theemotions an athlete lives in the world of sports.You hear the fear of"what if I'm not good enough to make it afterall"and "do Ireally want to go further".What if that person is injured...havetheir dreams and aspirations become nightmares?I really liked the ideathat someone saw a way to let other atheletes express their feelings andput that together so that they had a voice.Katie could do that becauseshe has felt those same emotions because she too is an athlete.Neat twistand good prespective and talented too. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Limited but Worthwhile
While the job demands and salary information aren't going to be highly reliable after seventeen years, Richardson's description of five sports related careers is worth the time. It is especially appropriate for people with an interest in athletics/sports but aware that a career as a professional athlete is unlikely. The writing is fast-paced and interesting with a quick description of each career and a summary of the pro's and con's for each. Richardson provides a profile/interview for three individuals at the conclusion of each section, allowing readers to gain firsthand perspectives on each of the careers. The book ends with a good self-analysis that allows readers to assess their own fit/readiness for a sports related career.

4-0 out of 5 stars Still useful after all these years...
This is the only book of its kind, and one badly in need of updating and revision because it was published so long ago. Winters offers a historical overview of intercollegiate athletics in the community colleges, tracing the evolution of the NJCAA and the split of the California community colleges to form their own athletic association. Most significantly, the book offers a historical roster of community/junior college alumni who went on to Olympic and professional sports careers. Much more could be done today to add to and fill in gaps in this work, but this is the single most significant piece of historical research ever published on community college sports and the thousands of great athletes produced by two-year schools nationwide.
