The trio of mascots for the Sydney Games are not exactly the animals the world would have expected at an Australian Olympics. In fact, there's not a marsupial among them. Instead, visitors to Sydney are being welcomed by Syd the platypus, Millie the echidna or spiny anteater and Olly the kookaburra. When graphic designer Matthew Hatton got the commission for the mascots in 1996, Olympic officials made one thing clear. "They said specifically they didn't want to do a kangaroo and a koala, and that was great because neither did I. Everybody in the world knows them already," he said, sitting in a home studio filled with comic books and toys. Hatton considered many indigenous Australian animals before settling on three that are familiar to most local school children but hardly known outside the continent.

Pewewardy is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Teaching and Leadership, School of Education, University of Kansas, Lawrence. His research interests include multicultural education and indigenous populations. This paper appeared in The Educational Forum , Summer 1999, p. 342. During the first three centuries of contact between Indians and whites, the image of the Indian, although confused and fictional, nevertheless had an empirical reference point - the experiences of the people on the frontier who encountered Indians and the correlation between reality and symbol was not difficult. Beginning with the Wild West shows and continuing with contemporary movies, television, and literature, the image of Indians has radically shifted from any reference to living people to a field of urban fantasy in which wish fulfillment replaces reality. -Vine Deloria (1980, ix) Why should educators know about the issues of Indigenous mascots, logos, nicknames, and the tomahawk chop? Invented media images prevent millions of people from understanding the past and current authentic human experience of Indigenous Peoples (Bird 1996). These trappings and seasonal insults offend the intelligence of thousands of Indigenous Peoples in the United States. As educators, we are responsible for teaching as an ethnical practice and for helping to eliminate racism in all aspects of school life. Therefore, the exploitation of Indigenous mascots in U.S. sports culture becomes an issue of educational equity.

The clip showed her being interviewed about her activism in the fight against the ongoing use of Indian mascots, and featured many images of these mascots in use. Elaborating in great detail on the remarks she gave during the GA's opening ceremony, Dr. Teters described her background as a Spokane Indian, and the history of her family. She emphasized the significant oppression faced by her forebears, who had to take their culture, their language, and even their names underground at the turn of the century when white authorities came. "My grandparents were forced to choose their new names out of a hat. The choices were only those of biblical names and names of presidents. So my grandmother became Nancy Moses. We call these 'Hat Names.' "My grandmother was a storyteller," she continued, "and in that time she was forbidden to share the stories or use her own language. Our language best translates our word for 'storytellers' as 'keepers of the sacred truth,' which gives only a small hint of the extreme importance of this role in our culture. It's how we have always communicated our culture to our children, through stories.

Hank Aaron, longtime baseball superstar with the Atlanta MLB team and vocal civil rights advocate, indicated his support for retiring "Indian" related sports team mascots. The Maine nation (Penobscot) to which Louis Francis Sockalexis belonged called upon the Cleveland MLB team to ban its "Chief Wahoo" logo. Sockalexis was the early Native American baseball player whom the Cleveland MLB team purported to honor with its nickname. Kevin Gover, the highest ranking Native official in the Bureau of Indian Affairs, added his voice to the call for retirement of "Indian" sports team mascots. Denouncing Chief Wahoo as a racist caricature, Mayor Michael R. White proposed removing the Cleveland Indians' logo from all city-owned property. The Cleveland area's Commission on Catholic Community Action called upon the region's Bishop to take action on racial stereotypes perpetuated by Cleveland's MLB team.
