Ewoodzie visited the biggest soccer stadium in the world, met a prominent sports studies scholar and played barefoot beach soccer at night with a neighborhood group. I dont want the whole school to think that the trip was just a paid vacation, Ewoodzie said. Every one of us learned a lot about the culture there. If youre just going to the beach, you wont see the black kid in the corner whos not going to school. Chic beaches like Copacabana and Ipanema make Brazil a good place to vacation. But the MLK Scholars learned what Brazil is like as a home when they conducted research on social justice in Rio de Janeiro and Salvador from Jan. 9 to 18. This is the inaugural year for the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholar Program, a scholarship and community service initiative designed to attract highly qualified minority students. This years faculty-in-residence Jeff Claus, an assistant professor in the Center for Teacher Education, drafted the academic requirements of the trip.
