Several of these drinks are advertised as 'stimulating'. Anyone who has tried these drinks will probably agree that they are stimulating - and in normal every-day circumstances, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this. However, if you are a serious athlete, young or old, and compete regularly in sporting events, read on and take note!! At least one of these stimulating drinks contains a large amount of caffeine, a banned substance. Take a close look at the list of ingredients: the caffeine content can be up to three times as much as in a can of coke. As little as 2 or 3 cans of Red Bull on competition day can take you over the limit should you get selected for a drugs test! Caffeine is a stimulant, which encourages your body to ignore pain - ignore the pain resulting from an injury and you could cause long-term damage that will put you out of your sport at best for a long time or at worst, for life. A drugs test will not establish how the banned drug got into your system, simply that it is there. A banned substance will mean a possible suspension from competition and will almost certainly mean that you will never be selected for the Olympic games. The best advice is not to drink any of the so-called stimulant drinks to slake your thirst. Talking to one of our top athletes recently he told me that his doctor had recommended that he take some 'Lem-Sip' to help get rid of a cold. Other athletes I spoke to were using other common remedies for coughs and cold. None of the athletes I spoke to were aware that had they been at a competition which was subject to drug testing, they would probably have proved positive if tested. The British Olympic Association has recently stated that no athlete who tests positive will ever be selected to take part in the Olympic games, no matter how accidentally, unintentionally or naively the medication or substance was taken. Linford Christie is a famous example of a 'positive' test. Ginseng Tea taken during the '88 Olympics resulted in a positive test result for Pseudoephedrine. He appealed successfully against the findings then, but as events have shown, since then the attitude of the governing bodies has hardened and there is not the same degree of tolerance currently.

In the first part of a five-day special report by CBS SportsLine, executive editor Mike Kahn says the names and drugs have changed somewhat, but problems persist, affecting athletes of all ages. Case in point is the NBA, where you don't hear much about cocaine anymore, but marijuana appears to be the drug of choice. Addressing its use will be an issue in the league's efforts to reach a deal with its players union. Players union says marijuana issue won't prevent deal With a 'dedication to the ideal of fair and equitable competition' as its driving force, the NCAA has perhaps the best drug program among U.S. sports organizations. Nonetheless, in Part 2 of CBS SportsLine's series on drugs and sports, senior writer Dennis Dodd says a limited budget and daunting logistics mean fewer than 10 percent of NCAA athletes are tested each year. And between the advance notice they are given and the test-beating tricks available, the fact that a consistent one to two percent are found to be positive is misleading. Says an NCAA official: 'The numbers do not reflect usage.'
