Athletes seek every competitive advantage and the rewards of success at top level are great, both financially and in personal glory. There is huge pressure to train longer and harder and to take a scientific approach to nutrition, fluid, and electrolyte balance, to seek every biomechanical and psychological advantage. It is almost inevitable that some will seek an advantage through drugs such as anabolic steroids, dietary supplements, and erythropoietin (EPO). According to Karen Goldberg Goff, society competitive sport has become increasingly more rewarding monetarily nowadays. As a result, million of athletes resort to drug-like substances to increase endurance and performance. These drug-like substances are DHEA, creatine, and androstenedione, which are all classified as the dietary supplements. The uses of these substances are implicitly encouraged through lucrative contracts, rewards, and fame. Although many professional sport organizations banned their use, many athletes are not being caught due to ineffective testing. In many of these cases, human growth hormones, which are hardly to detect, are often used. Athletes justified the use of drugs, dietary supplement, or growth hormones in the faces of ethical and legal issues because many have devoted their entire life to exceling. The combined effect of high pressure and the coveting of money, and fame will cause many athletes to overlook their personal well-being and health.

Designer drugs are a class of drugs that are frequently associated with all-night high school and college underground dance parties commonly referred to as "raves," known for their dance music and drug experimentation. These dangerous drugs are created by changing the molecular structure of an existing drug to create new drugs with similar pharmacological effects. "Designer drugs came into vogue to get around the Controlled Substances Act," says Wadler, "a federal law that banned the routine sale of drugs such as amphetamine and methamphetamine." Prepared by "underground chemists," known as "cookers," designer drugs can be injected, smoked, snorted or ingested. By the mid-1980s, many of the designer drugs were added to the Drug Enforcement Agency's list of controlled substances.

"Amphetamines belong to a class of drugs called sympathomimetic amines or stimulants that cause the release of excitatory neurotransmitters, such as dopamine, to stimulate thecentral nervous system (CNS)," says Wadler. They are controlled substances commonly called "uppers" and induce false feelings of power, strength, self-assertion and enhanced motivation. Trade names for amphetamines are Benzedrine, Dexedrene and Methedrine; these drugs have familiarly been referred to as "bennies" or "black beauties."

Media reports may have made the public more aware of the abuse of drugs by professional and world-class amateur athletes, but they have only scratched the surface of this ever-widening problem. The use of illicit substances in sports is not limited to elite athletes. It also affects young people to varying degrees. In 1998, Natacha Llorens, head of the Quebec RCMP's anti-doping program, conducted a province-wide study on the attitudes of young Quebeckers towards the use of drugs in sports. This study found that one out of every five young people in the province turned to performance-enhancing substances for that extra push. Over the years, the spirit of amateur and professional sports has been shaken to its foundation by these performance-enhancing substances. Most athletes today look for help from a wide variety of pills, ointments and injections. Whether they are seeking stimulation, relief from pain, performance enhancement or stress reduction, they all have their own magic formula and see no reason why they shouldn't use them. The extent to which drugs are used in sports is still largely unknown - the subject remains taboo and too controversial for the sporting world to confront. It is clear, however, that the use and abuse of these drugs is widespread and that they threaten the health, the safety and the lives of many athletes. And the number of people using performance-enhancing substances is on the rise for several reasons, including the easy availability of such substances in the absence of strict controls. Everyone must be made aware of this serious social problem; it raises important ethical and public health issues.
