5-0 out of 5 stars Snowboard Champ
When Matt Harper steps off the plane, he knows his life is about to change. For one thing, he'll be living with his uncle for a year while his mother works for the government in a mysterious job overseas. For another, compared to Chicago, Dragon Valley is tiny. In fact, everybody seems to know everybody else's bussiness. But as long as Matt can hit the slopes with his snowboard, he figures he'll get along okay. That's before he has a run-in with Riley, the eighth grade's most popular boy and the school's best snowboarder. Soon rumors are being spread about Matt's past-that Matt was in a gang, that he did drugs, that his mother is in prison. Will Matt be able to prove his innocence before Riley's campaign to ruin him snowballs out of control?
Overall:
Book is great! It's fun and keeps your eyes glued to the pages. Breakneck speed boardin fun! Buy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Snowboard Champ
This book is called Snowboarding Champ. The author of this book is Matt Christopher and it has one hundred sixty pages. I gave this book a four rating star out of five. This book is about a boy named Matt Harper who has a mom and dad that are divorced. His mom works for the government and he lives with her in Chicago. His dad however, has another wife and Matt doesn't like her. Matt's mom has to go on a secret job and Matt has to leave Chicago to go to live with his Uncle Clay's house during the winter in Dragon Valley where it snows during the winter and is hot during the summer, which isn't really a bad thing. His Uncle Clay is like a kid and loves to snowboard. Since Matt was at a new place he would have to attend a new school. At the school there was a kid named Riley who was very popular because of his snowboarding skills. While Matt was at school, Riley started to pick on him because he might be a threat. They challenged each other to a contest and Riley won by a little but everyone knew that the judges lied. There was a competition at school and this was a chance for Matt to prove himself to all the kids but someone had gotten him into so much trouble that he wasn't allowed to attend. After his uncle had yelled at the principle the school let him attend. Matt had ended up winning the whole competition and someone reported that Riley had committed the crime and not Matt. Riley's parents also busted him and sent him off to military school. While Matt is sitting at his Uncle Clay's house he gets a letter from his mom saying that she is trying to get money to feed the poor for many poor little states in different countries. He thought that was a pretty cool job and bragged about it to everyone at school where he now belonged. My recommendations for this book are anyone who likes to snowboard or who likes adventure books. ... Read more

Customer Reviews (5)

2-0 out of 5 stars not about the 2010 games
The book is fine, but it's a general overview of winter Games, not a highlight of the 2010 Vancouver games. It was written before the games, and only tells a little of the plans. The title is misleading.

4-0 out of 5 stars A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO THE WINTER OLYMPICS [4½ Stars]
As mentioned on its back cover,"The Winter Olympics: An Insider's Guide to the Legends, the Lore, and the Games" by Ron C. Judd features highlights from ALL the previous Winter Games from 1924 to 2006 and includes behind-the-scenes stories, memorable moments, profiles of legendary competitors, fields of play, record books, history's hits and misses for every sport, and details for spectators to enjoy the Vancover games (including maps of the Vancouver Venues).

The book itself is divided into two main parts: Ice Sports (i.e., skating, ice hockey, curling, bobsledding, etc.) and Snow Sports (i.e., skiing, biathlon, slalom, snowboarding, etc.)Each subsection covers a specific sporting event as a Spectator's Guide, which in turn, is broken down even further to include Field of Play; Format, Rules & Strategy, Training & Equipment, History's Hits & Misses and Olympic flashbacks, and when these venues will appear on TV for the Vancouver games. Each are accompanied by amazing full color (and B&W) photographs.

I found this book to be an interesting read, and -- despite it being full of details and specifics -- could barely put it down!It was very well-written and informative.

My only complaint -- albeit a minor one -- is that they don't have a separate table listing just the medal winners/records for each individual Winter Olympics.Otherwise, I would definitely recommend adding this book to your Olympics memorabilia!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Coffee Table Book
I found myself referring to the book almost every night during the Vancouver Games.Whatever event we'd be watching became more interesting with this wonderful book to educate and enlighten.I suppose its shelf life, like the 2010 Olympiad, is over but I still find myself leafing through it at night while watching TV.

5-0 out of 5 stars An insider's guide to the Winter Games
THE WINTER OLYMPICS: AN INSIDER'S GUIDE TO THE LEGENDS, THE LORE AND THE GAMES provides an insider's guide to the Winter Games, blending anecdotes and reporting with biographies of athletes and their achievements, profiles of individual sports, and discussions of the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. Highlights form all previous Winter Games accompany stories and discussions of history and events in this recommendation for any sports collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Winter Read
Those lucky enough to live in and around Seattle have enjoyed the wit and wry humor of Seattle Times columnist Ron C. Judd for years. He has brought the full force of his writing talent to his latest book, an historical, personal and journalistic look at the Winter Olympics. The book is out just in time for the Vancouver Games, which will begin Feb. 12 in British Columbia. Anyone planning to attend should pack this book, which also features a collection of Judd's previous Olympic columns from the Seattle Times.

Ron covers all the basics and helps explain the ins and outs of the Winter Games. Some of these sports are, how to put it?, arcane to the American taste buds. But Judd has made even the most extrinsic accessible through compelling writing. You will learn about long forgotten historical anecdotes that bring the Winter Games to life; the book will broaden your understanding of what's taking place whether you're on site or watching on TV or the Internet.

The book is buttressed by beautiful photos from Dean Rutz, who is considered one of the top newspaper Olympic photojournalists. Rutz is a colleague of Judd at the Seattle Times where they have collaborated for the past 10 years to bring Pacific Northwest readers as good Olympic coverage as anywhere in the country.

Even if you're not a huge winter sports fan the book is worth a read simply because of its lyrical quality.

It might be cold outside, but you'll feel warm and fuzzy while turning the pages and ski jumping into the world of the Winter Games. ... Read more

Product Description
Every year the Burton snowboard team travels south chasing snow. 28 Days: A Snowboarding Narrative documents a specific moment in time: August 2006. That month unequaled conditions blanketed the southern island of New Zealand. In Methven, NZ a small but elite crew of Burton's global team posted up to access the incredible Southern Alps via helicopter. Simultaneously, a creative crew took control of Snowpark NZ to reinvent freestyle park riding. Meanwhile, on the distant continent of South America, the Burton Women's team was pushing into the pristine backcountry of Termas De Chillan, Chile. 28 Days is an epic photographic narrative that captures these snowboarders pushing the limits of riding in the ultimate conditions, documents the ultimate trip, and inspires us all to ride. ... Awesome photos that inspire you to go hang in the mountains.

A must have for anyone that loves riding.

Not a book for all the Burton haters though...

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Photographs
The photographs in this book are absolutely amazing! The photographers are so incredibly talented.I feel like I am right there on the mountain. It is just an awesome book, I highly recommend it!Thank you Burton!

1-0 out of 5 stars Fine if you are looking for pics of a teen giving the finger
Burton has blown it again. Here the team riders had a chance to show the soul of snowboarding the mountains. And there is some of that. But there are more teen riders giving the finger and having a party (I recall one of a teen passed out in his own vomit, but this may have been the product catalog). So to say it was a disapointment is an understatement.

You might like it but know what you are getting. A disjoitned collection of pictures that do not reflect the soul or roots of the sport. ... Read more

Snowboard Showdown Out-of-control competition leads to disaster When Freddie Ruiz and his brother, Dondi, compete, it's like two mutts wrestling over the same bone-neither one is willing to give an inch. Unfortunately for Freddie, older, stronger, better-looking Dondi usually comes out on top in every contest. Except in one area: snowboarding. Here, Freddie is clearly king of the halfpipe. So when Dondi finally pushes Freddie too far, Freddie cooks up a snowboard showdown to make Dondi look foolish and himself the star. But will Dondi take the bait, or will he somehow turn the tables on his brother yet again? ... Read more

Snowboard Showdown By: ???

This story is about two brothers, Freddie and Dondi.Freddie is jealous of Dondi because Clarissa likes Dondi not Freddie. So Freddie challenges Dondi to a snowboard competition and Dondi declines. Then after Freddie wins the competition he notices Clarissa is with Dondi at the mall.A week after that Dondi challenges Freddie to who can make it down Devil's Ravine. Then it's Freddie up first. He faked a hurt ankle when he went through the trees. In the end the brothers like each other again, and Freddie gets the girl.

The story was exciting because of the competition between the brothers.Freddie and Dondi would compete in skiing, snowboarding and trying to get the girl.I can relate to the snowboard competition because I know how to snowboard. The suspense somehow made me want to keep reading. The only downside was that some of the story took place at school and I thought that was boring.I wanted Freddie to win, and in the end he got the girl.

The author, Paul Mantell uses the third person to tell this story. He used snowboarding terms when talking about the competitions. He also used slang words that teenagers might use.He gave nicknames to some characters that were realistic and cool.I was able to feel the tension between the brothers while reading this book.I have read several Matt Christopher books and enjoy the story lines and surprises through out the books. He writes the way an 11 to 18 year old thinks and shows the bond between kids and sports.

I would rate this book at nine out of ten because it has characters and a setting I can relate to.It kept my interest throughout the whole book.In the end the conflict between the brothers was resolved.I would recommend this book if you like snowboarding or want to learn to snowboard.

This book is an awesome book.I like Matt Christopher books because all the characters think outside the box. Some times throughout this book I was thinking how much I would like to do the tricks he could do.I can't wait until it snows.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Rocks
I love this book because I love snowboarding. In this book, two brothers have a contest to see who is better at snowboarding.Freddie and Donovan tease each other a lot.Donovan won't admit that Freddie is a better athlete. Freddie and his friends all think that he is better than Donovan.I also liked this book because the brothers play pig and I love to play pig. This book is exciting because you don't really know what happens next, things sort of pop out at you when you don't really expect it.You should read this book because it has action and is fun.
