Chapters: Real. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 45. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Real Riaru) is a manga series, by Takehiko Inoue, which deals with wheelchair basketball. It has been serialised in Shueisha's Young Jump and to date, 9 volumes have sold in Japan. The first 7 volumes have sold over 9 million copies in Japan alone. Although not as popular overseas as Slam Dunk has been, Real is a more serious take on basketball, with much character development in a realistic setting. It is also aimed at more mature audiences, being a seinen series serialized in Young Jump. The story revolves around three teenagers: Nomiya Tomomi, a high school dropout, Togawa Kiyoharu, an ex-sprinter who now plays wheelchair basketball and Takahashi Hisanobu, a popular leader of the high school's basketball team who now finds himself a paraplegic after an accident. Real features a cast of characters who find themselves being marginalized by society, but are all united by one common feature: a desire to play basketball, with no place to play it in. Nomiya, being a high school dropout, has no future in his life. Togawa, being a difficult personality, finds himself constantly feuding with his own teammates. Takahashi, once a popular team leader, now finds himself being unable to move from the chest down. Real also deals with the reality of physical disabilities, and the psychological inferiority that the characters struggle against. The characters break through their own psychological barriers bit by bit. While basketball is a large part of Real, a larger emphasis is placed on character development-- Takehiko Inoue is just as interested in exploring the past of the characters, their inner world, and their attempts to achieve something in life as he is in looking at the sport of wheelchair basketball...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3295616 ... Product Description

Hoop Dreams on Wheels is a life-history study of wheelchair athletes associated with a premier collegiate wheelchair basketball program. The book, which grapples with the intersection of biography and history in society, situates the study in broader context with background on the history and sociology of disability and disability sports. It documents the development and evolution of the basketball program and tells the individual life stories of the athletes, highlighting the formative interpersonal and institutional experiences that influenced their agentive actions and that helped them achieve success in wheelchair sports. It also examines divisions within the disability community that reveal both empowering and disempowering aspects of competitive wheelchair athletics, and it explores some of the complexities and dilemmas of disability identity in contemporary society.

The book is intended to be read by a general audience as well as by students in college courses on disability, sports, social problems, deviance, medical sociology and anthropology, and introductory sociology. It also will be of interest to scholars in the sociology of disability, sociology of sports, and medical humanities, as well as life-history researchers and professionals in the fields of physical education, therapeutic recreation, and rehabilitative counseling.

Editorial Review

Product Description
The purpose of this book is to use sport as a vehicle to show the achievements of individuals with disabilities. With more than 600 colour photographs and 258 pages, this book shows the tremendous impact that a largely-volunteer group, the Paralympic movement, can have on society.

Gary McPherson, Chair of the Alberta Premier's Council on the Status of Persons With Disabilities, says, "The ripple of the disabled sports movement is immense. So many people have gained from it in the areas of rehabilitation, competitive sport, and better social conditions. If you are going to bring about social change, you need to do it in a positive way rather than in a negative way. Sport is a positive vehicle to show what can be done, and how it can be done."

The people profiled in the book are not only successful in the world of disabled sport -- many are elite athletes at the pinnacle of their careers -- they are successful in mainstream society as well. The strong message that comes through from those profiled is that those with disabilities can overcome the barriers they face. Dr. Steadward says of the special people he worked with, "They never thought that their disabilities would in any way limit their ambition, or their ability to participate in anything they wanted to do." Repeatedly the message is, "I can do so much more than I thought I could. The secret is to try."

The story of the Paralympic Games, second in size only to the Olympic Games, is the story of volunteers, thousands and thousands of volunteers, who over the years have made tremendous sacrifices to improve the lives of those with disabilities. It is the story of skilled professionals, whose research and commitment benefit not only athletes, but all people with disabilities. The development of specialized racing wheelchairs, for example, led to the improvement of design in regular wheelchairs. It is the story of people who are role models for those in every walk of life.As one of the slogans developed by Joey Reiman (Brighthouse Ad Agency) for the Atlanta Games says, "The Olympic Games are where heroes are made. The Paralympic Games are where heroes come."

This book is written to inspire. One reader may be a sports fan looking for photographs of elite athletic performances. Other readers might be those who find themselves suddenly disabled, or families looking for reassurance that their efforts can make a difference in the life of a loved one with a disability, or discouraged volunteers who need to see that they can make a difference. This book helps all its readers see their own potential with new clarity.

Profits from the book will be used to further spinal cord research, rehabilitation, awareness, and education through the Rick Hansen Centre at the University of Alberta. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring & Awesome
For anyone who was born with a disability, this book will inspire you to never give up on your dreams. For anyone else, this book reminds you that those of us with physical limitations do not always live up to lowered expectations. It is truly amazing what the people in this book have accomplished, especially considering the physical problems they have overcome. My favorite section was the personal profiles of the athletes with their photos and accomplishments. The people in this book are truly leaders in paving the way in changing what makes someone successful - persistence and determination.
