1-0 out of 5 stars Nothing new
Any basic triathlon book will give you weight training ideas as good as these.Google is probably better.

1-0 out of 5 stars Should be called the Ultimate Let Down
I have been weight training since Iwas 15. This book just lists basic weight training exercises every weight trainer does. I found nothing and I mean nothing new or different that is specific for a triathlete. Its just a weight training book with a triathlete sticker slapped on the front. Dont' waste your money Google is better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
This is an easy to use book that helps you organize your own routines so that it would take years for you to become stagnate in weight lifting. The pictures of form are helpful and descriptive.I would recommend this book for any triathlete.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Dud or . . . Does Hesson ever get out of the weight room?
Hesson was assigned reading for a weight lifting class at a Community College.I've had a continual dialog with the instructor about the flaws in the text.

I found this text lacking in several areas.First, Hesson draws on a very narrow knowlege base.Recommended stretches are static and not dymanic.Less flexible individuals might find some of streches difficult or even dangerous.Has Hesson never heard of yoga, Pilates, or Excercise Kinesiology?Second, I disagree with Hesson's blanket assertion that dietary supplements are useless at best and dangerous at worse. It's outdated thinking and not supported by recent literature, especially from Europe.I guess Big Pharma rules in the USA.It's bad thinking to encourage in young minds.

Third, the USDA MyPyramid website, as promoted in the text, does not make logical sense and might even endanger the health and well-being of the users.I think the site needs to be revised. It should be excised from the text and taught as a theme in the instructor's manual, flashy graphics not withstanding. As of this date, I've been contacted twice in the same day by the USDA about problems with the website applet and the results it returns.

Fourth, I think the price is outragous. Its flimsy, spiral bound and costs $40 to $56.Barf!I paid $20 for it and regular book buyers are aghast that I even spent that much.

As an introductory text, its OK, but there are many others that are better.Weight Training for Dummies or Weight Training for Beginners by Gallagher comes to mind. As assigned reading for a class, its a waste of color printing and should be flushed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful and highly recommended read for any serious runner
A good weight lifting routine can make one a faster runner with greater stamina. Now in a fully updated and expanded second edition, "The Ultimate Guide to Weight Training for Running" is a guide for runners who want to incorporate weight lifting into their routine. A solid routine can help runners run faster, longer, with less chance of injury. "The Ultimate Guide to Weight Training for Running" is a powerful and highly recommended read for any serious runner.

2-0 out of 5 stars short, not very useful
First off, this book has about a 16 point font and is very short. It looks like my 6th grade book reports where I was trying to fill as many pages as possible. The author is a weight-lifter first and foremost and doesn't seem to have any particular insight into running. He just lists basic exercises and training programs.

The programs are very specific, and there is little advice on how you would tailor your own if you don't plan on lifting weights according to his strict schedule.

Skip this book, get a good book on basic strength training instead.

1-0 out of 5 stars Generic, basic, useless
First, you must be aware of the fact that this book is part of a series of about 30 books called "Weight training for...", including diverse activities such as rugby, bowling and cheerleading, and which are very similar one another. The author had the wonderful idea of writing basically one book and selling 30. Genius.

The book is structured as follows:
- A running-specific introduction
- Generic advice about gym workouts: basic stuff like the necessity of warming up and cooling down and making sure you don't lift more weight than you can
- Tons of (generic) exercises
- Two pseudo-scientific articles (one about technique and another about nutrition). These were the only remotely useful bits of the book, and they were written by other specialists.

From the above, it doesn't sound so bad. You could even thing this book was worthwhile. This is why it is not:

- The only running-specific advice is contained in the introduction (and the two articles), which is just 9 pages long (with huge font and big tables!)). All the rest of the book is totally generic, addressed to runners, racquetball players and golfers alike. Seriously, there is no other running-specific advice anywhere else, meaning around 85% of the book.

- The explanations to the exercises are pretty basic, similar to what you'll find printed in most decent gym machines. No value added there.

- Even worse, not even the selection of the exercises seemed to be really thought for runners. Only 20% (12 out of 60) of the exercises are for legs. I'm totally for a balanced work-out and training the core muscles, but you'd think runners would want to focus just a little bit more that 20% on the legs, right?

- There is no distinction between sprinters, hurdlers, marathoners, ultramarathoners, etc., which you'd assume would require "slightly" different training routines. You are left wondering whether the author even knows that there are several kinds of runners.

- Most annoyingly, the text is full of ads inviting the reader to join the author's (paid) website. Which I will not.

I truly do not know what the other reviewers based their reviews on, but IMHO this book (and the whole series) is pretty much a waste of your hard-earned money.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Start
All of the books in this series are nearly the same which can be a bit annoying. However, I view any weight-training programs offered as just a start rather than as the end all of what to do.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed!
I was disappointed in this book.I was hoping to find out more on the difference in weight training between distance runners/sprinters.There was very little useful information on this topic.I know these drills, weights, but as a distance coach, this didn't help at all.It made me think of how to train my pole vaulters/long jumpers a little more, but no distinction is made for sprinters, middle distance, or long distance. That's what I was hoping for when I bought this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome information
As an amateur boxer, this book has greatly assisted my strength and conditioning. I've applied the key essentials and am already seeing improvements in speed, endurance, and strength. This book focuses on improving speed and strength without becoming fatigued easily. As a bonus, tips are provided to help prevent injuries and build technique over just becoming bulky. When you build muscle mass, you become fatigued faster. Now if you work out the right way (like this book provides) you can build the same strength you would with muscle mass.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for a beginner only
This is a great book for a beginner but if you have been lifting for awhile do not bother. Also - my 15 year old outgrew the book after two months in the gym.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like your own personal trainer
I have sought to become physically fit and in shape for most of my life.I have pursued this on my own, in groups, with trainers, and now with this program.Having had experience before, understanding the exercises and the correct form, I find this book a fantastic way to get in and stay in shape.Everything is spelled out.You need only follow the the instructions and regiments to see and feel results.

I have consciously changed my diet, but not drastically, which has enhanced the program.I am presently in my 5th week, have also added a minute of running each week, totaling six minutes at this point. These are all things that I never thought I would accomplish.

I am a person who needs to be given specific steps, which this book contains, saving me from doing the thinking.

I reccommend it highly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Intro to Lifting Free Weights
One must be careful in technique to gain maximum physical benefit and avoid injury while lifting free weights. This book covers both dumbells and barbells. A must-have for the beginner.

2-0 out of 5 stars Be Very Careful
I really, really like this book and agree with the author's big picture method.I did it faithfully for months and added weight and watched my body shrink and look great. Then one day I started getting odd pain in my hip while on the leg press. It wasn't muscular, it felt like bones grinding together.Guess what? It was! My muscles could lift 140lbs but my joint could not and now I have bursistis in that hip which prevents me from doing many, many exercises. It's a tremendous bummer for me-- I'm 39 and have pain squatting, going up stairs, and on most cardio machines. It is a chronic condition from using too much weight--that is what the doctor said. I spent 6 months not exercising because of it and now am very limited in any exercise that involves repetitive hip motion (uh, that would be most exercises).

Ultimately, a great body can be had from doing lighter weights. And it is far less dangerous. I wish I had just used common sense.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, Easy-to-Follow Work-Out Plan
My wife and I are now half way through our second 12-week cycle and we have both seen good results. We are stronger, thinner, and healthier than we have been in years. The workout plan is simple, the workouts are relatively short (we do cardio, but the weights only take 30-40 minutes depending on the workout), and they vary in two week cycles to keep you from plateauing. It isn't going to get you huge, but for normal folks it is a great option.I played football in high school and college, so had some experience with weights, but my wife had never lifted. These workouts work great for both of us.Terrific for any skill level (assuming you are not trying to become a body builder).I plan on picking up Vol. II after we finish our current 12 week program. ... Product Description
Strength and power are essential attributes for any martial artist, affecting everything from how hard you punch to how high you jump. Whether your goal is to defeat an opponent in the ring or on the street, the stronger you are, the better the odds of walking away as the victor.

Strength and Power Training For Martial Arts is a total approach to building your strength base. Learn how to use free weights, machines, body weight exercises and plyometrics to build your muscles while increasing speed and flexibility. Each muscle group is discussed in detail - how it's used in martial arts, how to develop it, which exercises are most effective, and most importantly, how to take advantage of anatomical strengths when striking, blocking, kicking and grappling.

Beyond muscular strength, this book looks at the concepts of cardiovascular strength endurance, the impact of flexibility on strength, mental approaches to training, and the anatomy, physics and biomechanics of power. Strength and Power Training For Martial Arts wraps up with training plans for karate, taekwondo, hapkido, judo, jujitsu, aikido, muay thai/kickboxing and mixed martial arts as well as advice on designing your own personalized strength training plan. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Rudimentary at best, for beginner's only
While Martina Sprague has in a background in martial arts, she lacks in a knowledge of getting the maximum training benefits from weights and body weight exercises. The book is geared towards those who have limited physical fitness and have little to no experience in lifting or working out. Having said that, even then the program is lacking in multiple joint exercises, and exercises that involve more than one muscle group. While the cover lists suggest power training will be incorporated, there is NO Olympic lifts included anywhere in the book. The strength exercises listed in for each muscle group are very very basic and lacking the most beneficial movements for each group. Furthermore, the abdominal section was missing key elements in training the core, such as planks and/or bridges. Minimal conversation was given to cardiovascular conditioning, and is under the opinion that running is the best way to develop cardiovascular conditioning for martial arts, not high intensity circuits of lifting/body weight/dynamic movements. In conclusion, only beginners will find any benefit from this book. If your serious about your martial arts training, save the money. u

4-0 out of 5 stars Good strength trainign book
This book does and will provide the information you need to plan your strength training.I found it to be very help in targetting the areas I needed help with.If you are training this book is a great refernce.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Little Brief In Some Areas, But Overall Packed With Good Information!
Let me start off by saying that this book was literally packed with good solid information on resistance training for martial artists. Are there better books on resistance training? Yes, and there are also some that are a lot worse that are written by bodybuilders themselves, so that point is actually pretty mute at this point. Perhaps the better question would be, "Is there any better books on resistance training for martial artists?" I truly don't know as of the writing of this review, but suffice to say that if there is, then this book has got to be right up there with them.

The author begins the book by providing some really good background information before delving right into the "meat and potatoes" part of this book by covering a wide array of subjects such as; cardio, flexibility, resistance training, plyometrics, etc. Although the author goes into a fairly detailed explanation of a lot of the exercises, I felt that there were a few were the accompanying text was a bit brief. However, having said that, that is to be expected in a book with this type of format where the author is trying to give you a wide variety of techniques and exercises to perform.

Although there are a lot of other books out there that do cover the individual types of exercises to a much greater degree, this book is a very well done basic overview of the exercises that any person should do in order to improve not only their martial arts skill, but also their overall health and well-being.

Here are a couple of other books that I also recommend on the subject of resistance training.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book for functional strength
I am not a martial artist but I am very well educated about health and fitness matters.I am also very fit. This book has taken my routines to a much more beneficial level in terms of having useful strength and power.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not all that useful
If you already have even a minimal background in sports and fitness, I would not recommend spending the money to buy this book. While it is informative and well written, I found that I already knew most of the material even though I have no formal education in sports and fitness - I just got into weightlifting on my own and figured things out, sometimes by watching what other people in the gym were doing. However, if you are totally clueless when it comes to strength training, then this book would probably be useful for you. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars great book
I purchased this book for my sister for Christmas & asked her to review it. Here is what she said...
This is a great book. The information is great and will be a great reference for years to come.It helped put things together scientifically that I was wondering about in the gym.It has helped me train better. The only thing I have found that is a minor issue is that some of the references do not match up.An example would be on page 32 table 3.3b references for what page to find the exercises on do not all match up.Sumo deadlift is not on page 178 but on page 180.The information in this book makes it easy to overlook the printing errors and is a valuable tool for the everyday woman who is looking to make the most out of her time in the gym.

5-0 out of 5 stars For beginners to bodybuilders, and yes, it's free online
The 13 chapters in "Strength Training for Women" include:

-Quenching Your Competitive Fire

This is a comprehensive fitness book about strength training for women, written by a woman. Not a book written for men, which women can use.I like that about it.I also like that the models used to illustrate the exercises are 'real people'. You would not see them in Muscle and Fitness magazine, but you will see them in the gym at the YMCA!

While the last chapter is really geared for body building and fitness competitors, the book as a whole is very informative. Each chapter breaks down the information into easily readable bits and it's easy to skip around to find what you need or want to read.

The first chapter, gives you the 'why' to strength train. "The Perks" some might say.In the second chapter focus' on our body's 'adaptations' as strength training is added to our fitness routines. What our body goes through as it changes. The third chapter's focus is on our metabolism and how it works. The fourth chapter talks about the components of exercise: agility, flexibility, balance, endurance and strength, and how those components can be adjusted for different types of training.

Chapter five focus' on strength training methods.Isotonic versus isometric exercises, and speed versus strength training, to name a few.Chapter six is a good basic nutrition and meal planning for making training gains. Losing weight, gaining weight, are both covered.Chapter seven is where the meat of the book begins regarding exercises.Planning a workout for beginners through advanced, as well as a 'bone building' program are found here. Information on how to keep a training log as well as how to select your exercises and the importance of rest are covered in this chapter.

In the eighth chapter through the thirteenth, the book covers the 102 specific exercises broken down into the areas of the body they are geared to work on.Photos (some look a bit dated, but 'you get the picture...') illustrate what is described in step-by-step instructions.Nothing complicated and some use the ball or no weights at all.Others are done with free weights, bars or machines.

Overall, I'm very pleased with this book. It's comprehensive and well laid out with good information.I also love that it's free online at Healthline. If you're looking for one women's strength training book to use to improve your fitness at any age... this is it.

2-0 out of 5 stars inspiring models, please?
the thing that i most disliked about the book is the pictures. the models are not pretty, not inspiring, look like they have a body fat percentage over 25, etc. if you like to see exercises demonstrated by people who are actually in shape, you probably will not like this book.
on the other hand, there is some fairly in-depth discussion in here, and almost all the exercises can easily be done at home. they are nothing new, but if you are a beginner who wants to learn but does not want to join a gym, this is the book for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of great information
As I progressed in working out with weights, I wanted to get more information on training & more advanced moves, which this book provided.Note some information is geared towards the more advanced bodybuilder competition type.

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring
If you are at the gym , and you are working out , you are tapping into your physical energy . The last thing you want to do is read words and words . You need more pictures on how . This book has just too much of words ... Read more

Product Description
Age-specific sport, fitness, and health programs for kids 7 to 18

The benefits of strength training for youth are clearly documented. Yet teachers, fitness instructors, and youth coaches are often not sure how to proceed, and they end up watering down adult versions of strength-training programs.

That is definitely not the way to go. But authors Avery Faigenbaum and Wayne Westcott, with their 50 years of combined experience in teaching youth strength-training classes and coaching, can tell you the way to go--and back it with the most current research on instructional techniques and program design for youth.

Long recognized as leading authorities on strength training, Faigenbaum and Westcott guide you in designing efficient, enjoyable, and productive programs for kids of varying abilities in elementary school (ages 7 to 10), middle school (11 to 14), and high school (15 to 18). You will focus first on broad-based, balanced muscle development, and then move into comprehensive, sport-specific strength-training programs.

In addition, Youth Strength Trainingwill teach you

  • productive protocols for warming up and cooling down;
  • procedures for enhancing joint flexibility;
  • innovative ways to incorporate resistance exercises into physical education classes, sport practice sessions, and exercise facilities; and
  • proper exercise technique for 111 resistance exercises using weight stack machines, free weights, medicine balls, elastic bands, and body-weight resistance.

Much has changed since the authors first wrote a book on strength training for youth, and those changes--including information in the areas of nutrition, hydration, and recovery to maximize the effects of strength training and minimize the risks of overtraining--are incorporated in this book. Additional changes, based on the authors' studies, are reflected in workout frequency, exercise repetitions, related training components, and other factors that affect program design and conditioning results. All programs were fashioned with the latest NASPE standards in mind.

Faigenbaum and Westcott have included new information on periodization and long-term planning, perceived exertion scale for youth, overtraining and undertraining, dynamic warm-ups and static stretches, new exercises, effective instruction of youth, and plyometrics.

Through strength training, kids as young as 7 can safely develop a strong musculoskeletal system that can help them improve their health and fitness and also withstand the rigors of sport participation.

Youth Strength Trainingis the definitive source to guide you in designing and overseeing the programs of the kids you work with, whether you're in a school, fitness center, or home setting. If you want to see high rates of strength development and spark a lifelong interest in strength-building activities, rely on Youth Strength Training. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Youth Strength Training
Youth Strength Training should be included as an integral book in the library of EVERY youth coach, physical education teacher and parent that wants to learn the RIGHT way to train our youth!Drs. Faigenbaum and Westcott have taken a lifetime of scientific based research and practical applications of the proper way to train our children and young athletes, and have provided a well conceived, appropriate and safe method of training for young people.By following the principles, practice and programs outlined in Youth Strength Training, the coach, teacher and/or parent can not only provide the correct way to improve the strength and condition of the young boy and girl, but give those young people a way to exercise that is fun and functional!Simply put - These programs WORK!!!This is one of the finest books I have ever seen on the unique and specialized strength and conditioning training for the young. The authors' work with youth for their entire professional careers is brought together in this book that is practical, functional, and easy to follow and implement. I give Youth Strength Training: Programs for Health, Fitness and Sport my highest recommendation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
Once again, Dr. Faigenbaum has succeeded with "Youth Strength Training" in proving why he is one of the most Prestigious & Well-Respected Experts on the topic of Youth Strength Training & Conditioning. The present generation of children are less active than ever before. This book stresses that children are not miniature adults and must not be trained as such. We must continue to bring the concept of "play" into the training of todays youth, as many kids lack the basic skills needed to run, skip, and jump. Without those skills and the pressure of the "early specialization" parent, transferable skills learned in playing multiple sports are lost & underconditioned youth are at a greater risk for injury & burnout.

As a Titleist Performance Institute Certified Golf Fitness Professional who specializes in Youth Performance training, I would highly recommend no other methods than the principles laid out in this book. The research and data based programs that Wescott & Faigenbaum bring in this book fully cover any underlying Myths & Misconceptions about Youth Strength Training. The authors provide easy to follow programs for any child, not just athletes.

I cannot stress enough how highly I recommend that any Parent or Strength Training coach have this book in their library

5-0 out of 5 stars Graham Review
Dr. Faigenbaum & Dr. Wescott have once again provided exercise professionals with a scientifically and evidenced based resource manual for the strength training of youth and adolescents. This book offers easy to follow guidleines and recommendations for the design and implementation of strength training and fitness workouts for youth and adolescents 7 to 18 years of age. The book also provides 100 illustrated exercises with technique descriptions using various types of training equipment. It is a must read and resource manual and belongs on everyone's book shelf who work with youth and adolescents in strength training and fitness programs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Priceless
As a parent of 2 teenage boys I was looking for a book on youth strength training and I found it!The descriptions of sample programs are easy to understand and the photos of starting and finishing positions of every exercise are priceless. Highly recommended to parents who want to learn about safe and proper techniques for lifting weights.

5-0 out of 5 stars Masterful
Drs. Faigenbaum and Westcott are at the top of their game. The new edition of this book is a world-class guide to preparing student-athletes for the demands of sport - and of life.

What makes this book so extraordinary is the authors' evidenced-based approach, and their application of an educational model to training. They do a superb job of explaining strength training as part of childrens' long-term development rather than just in terms of fitness. The discussions of its role in skill acquisition, as well as its transfer to performance and health, are terrific. They also do some important mythbusting.

The big payoff is in the authors' insights on the real risks of working with youth: missed opportunities to teach the fundamentals, the problems with early specialization, and the dangers of failing to prepare for real-world activities. Everything from athletics to ADLs involve strength and power, folks. Here's the curriculum guide. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A general weightlifting text
This book is nothing special in my opinion.I bought it expecting a discussion of how weight training can benefit gymnastics training.Unfortunately all I got was a general discussion of how to lift weights. There was little on programming, a decent discussion on periodization, and a good discussion of general lifting exercises...but why do you need general lifting exercises? There's nothing special here.It gives a decent, but not great, overview of how to lift for general conditioning and strength training.Basic questions such as:
How to incorporate weight training with gymnastic training
What lifts will help you power through sticking points in which gymnastic techniques
No discussion of appropriate volume.

One of the biggest problems this book has is it recommends a complete weightlifting regimen. You don't need that if you're training for gymnastics already. You get a lot of strength and explosive work through normal training.Adding a compelte lifting routine on top of that is a sure route to over-training.

I give this three stars because it is a good introductory weight lifting text.It just has nothing special for gymnasts.

It's the best way to training gymnastics and gaing muscle and condition. ... Read more

A Fresh and Effective Approach to Staying Toned During Pregnancy—in just 30 Quick Minutes a Day At Home or on the Road

Pregnancy is no time to let yourself go—and with Anna Aberg’s surprisingly efficient light weight program, the forty weeks of waiting may even be a time to get stronger and fitter!  When Aberg—a former Miss Sweden and personal trainer—was pregnant with her first child, she couldn't find an exercise routine that would increase her fitness while safeguarding her pregnancy.  Stretching, yoga, and light aerobics—standard fare for pregnant women—weren't enough for this high-performance mom-to-be.  Aberg developed a daily regimen of 2- to 10-pound weight training that could be done anywhere at any time.  The system she developed and perfected to keep herself in shape is all here, divided into three sets for each trimester of pregnancy.  It focuses on abs, arms, thighs, butts, and shoulders and promises: increased strength, enhanced endurance, a cap on body fat and more flexibility.

Aberg’s 30-Minute Pregnancy Workout Book will tone any mother and keep truly active exercisers in peak condition throughout their pregnancies.

4-0 out of 5 stars okay book
the book had a lot of suggestions and workouts, but i think i would have been better off going with a video

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book.
I found this at the library and gave it a try. I was very active prior to being pregnant: kickboxing, grappling, stickfighting and I also lifted weight. Because a lot of the sports I did required a lot of close contact, I had to make quite a few adjustments to my workout routine. I am now in my 15th week and I also do get tired more easily.
This book is great. I only started with the second trimester routine. I love that it truly feels like a cardio workout. Photos are great although if you've never lifted weight before, it is true they might not be as clear since they only show you 2 photos (move is not broken down a lot). So far I have not been able to do the routine in 30 minutes. It takes me about 45 minutes. I think it has to do with the fact that I have not memorized the whole routine yet and so it takes me more time to look through the pages and I might be doing the moves a bit slower.

The main CON I have about the book is that I could have done without the extra advice/pages about pregnancy in general and the development of the baby. Most pregnant women read at least a dozen of books on the subject and so this one could have kept the focus on the fitness and nutrition and skipped the rest. This was the first book on the subject of fitness and pregnancy that I read so I cannot compare it to the other ones available.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wish I'd had this the first time
Let me start by saying that I found this week just as I entered my third trimester of my second pregnancy, so I only applied the third trimester and post-partum moves.I did, however, look over the whole book and I think I can speak for the book as a whole when I say the following:

Pros:
1.The moves are easy to do, and yet I found them to be very effective (3rd trimester is exclusively upper-body moves, and they were really just right; and I think made a huge difference when my baby was born; I'm still doing those moves, aimed esp. at helping your posture while nursing, and your upper body while carrying that baby around!).
2.The moves focus on aerobic muscle toning, which I really like (using light weight with lots of reps rather than heavier weights to build bulkier muscles).
3.The exercises are described on each page, but there is a summary of the workout routine at the beginning of each trimester section, so you can use just one page if you remember the moves, or turn the pagebetween moves to have the description in front of you.[Some books only list exercises, then you have to look each of them up in another section if you don't remember.]

Cons:
1.The pictures are a little hard to follow--it took me a few read-throughs to figure out exactly how to do the moves (a few of them are very similar).I docked a star for this reason.
2.Just one set of exercises for the trimester.I like to have a couple sets to rotate through (set #1 on Mondays and Thursdays, set #2 on Tuesdays and Fridays or something like that), though perhaps because these are more aerobic rather than muscle building it's okay to be repeating the same patterns more frequently.

Overall, it's my favorite pregnancy workout book (and I tried half a dozen between the two pregnancies).Highly recommend--have bought for a number of friends now.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gift for my wife
I got this for her and I routinely see her with the book out and doing the exercises, so I can only conclude that there is one happy owner of the book out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!
This book, 101 Ways To Work Out With Weights, should be a part of every woman's library. I so love this book because the exercises have helped my body become stronger more limber and toned. The instructions and pictures with every exercise make it so easy to follow. There are exercises for beginners to advanced. Any woman can follow the exercises no matter what physical shape they are in. Thanks to this book I will never stop working out with weights as the benefits make it all worth while.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great At-Home Free Weight Workout Book
This book was exactly what I was looking for-- workout moves with free weights that I can do from home. The layout is great & I like how each move is marked with a fitness level. Additionally, each move is easily understood thanks to the helpful pictures that go with each step. I only have two very minor complaints-- I wish the warm-up section was non- free weight workouts but stretches instead. And it'd be a lot easier to use during a workout if it was spiral-bound.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
If you need some exercises this book has them. Nothing new, nothing revolutionary, nothing bad.

5-0 out of 5 stars 101 ways to workout with weights
This is a great book for those wanting variety and the ability to build their own workout routines.I love that she includes lots of compound exercises, which means you are working lots of muscle groups at the same time, rather than just one muscle group.Includes a section on working out with a slipping towel on a smooth floor, which I haven't done yet but it's something different I might work on later.Lots of suggested workouts for each body area as well as mesomorph, ectomorph ectCan work as a diet, weightloss, sculpting program as she includes a suggested diet (very stringent and involves her own protein products though). But I just use it to supplement what I already do and provide some interesting variety and its great for that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Weight Training Made Easy
An excellent, simple introduction to weight training. As a beginner several years ago, I used this book and appreciated the step-by-step approach and easy break-in to weight training. Years later, returning to weight training, I sought this book because I knew it would be effective.

5-0 out of 5 stars weight training made easy:transform your body in four simple steps
I taught myself weight training at home and this book has good photos and good explainations on how to do the exercises correctly.I was able to achieve the results I wanted by using this book and not having to rely on a personal trainer or going to a gym.You can basically use dumb bells and a step or weight bench to get yourself in shape. This is actually the second time I purchased this book and was happy to find it on Amazon.com because my bookstore no longer sold it.I had stopped weight training for a while and lost the book in a recent move, so I was glad to have it as a guide again. She also has nutrional advise in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get Off the Couch!
For those with a less-than-active lifestyle, this book will help you get started in weight training.Great exercises are included.

2-0 out of 5 stars May be helpful for older women, otherwise not useful
If you manage not to get distracted by the sheer number of her photos, many of which are quite unnecessary, you MAY actually do some of her exercises and find this book useful. However, I couldn't help but get distracted by her narcissistic view of herself and the redundancy of many of the exercises that she presents.

This is not for anyone who is past the couch-potato stage of fitness. I purchased this book hoping that I would find good exercises that women could do anywhere, especially when traveling and not having access to a gym. But these exercises haven't helped me at all. I've been better off doing push-ups, crunches, jumping jacks, and dips. For anyone who is a true couch-potato and does not exercise at all, however, this may be truly helpful.

For anyone with a moderate to active lifestyle, I'd recommend purchasing the Body Sculpting Bible. I've kept that book for myself and I gave this book to my grandmother.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent work out for busy Moms
I just ordered a second copy of the book because the workout charts I have had taped to my wall for the last 8 years are looking tatty.
It is an excellent workout for someone who wants to stay in shape and does not have a lot of time. I have never injured myself following her directions, and I am quite strong.
When I first started (after the birth of our third child) I used thebook while my husband was at work. He did not know I was doing this, but after a couple of weeks noticed that I had really begun to spring back into shape!
I agree with her assessment on which Gym machines are most useful, meaning which ones work muscles that are harder to exercise using free weights. Her suggestions are always geared to helping you make the most of your time.
Her dietary suggestion are pre-Atkins Renaissance (i.e she goes higher on carbs and lower on fats than today's trends do), but it is really the exercise principles and workouts you should buy the book for. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars WEIGHT TRAINING FOR SKIING
Ultimate Guide to Weight Training for Skiing (Ultimate Guide to Weight Training...) GOOD GUIDE WITH EASY TO UNDERSTAND INSTRUCTIONS & PROGRAMS

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Disappointing

When the Soviets tested potential ski racers the key desirable capability they were looking for was leg strength (60%) with specific focus on explosive power (plyometrics). The remaining attributes tested for were skeletal alignment (posture), flexibility, balance, reaction speed, and range of movement from center core through the hips, knees and feet (joints) - with special attention paid to range of dorsa flexion.

BTW neither the Soviets nor anybody else cares about upper body strength other than how it might be tweaked to improve posture or overly trained which might negatively affect flexibility.

So you would think a book so targeted to weight training for skiers would focus on lower body strength with special emphasis on enhancing both flexibility and range of motion. And would most certainly reference the bio mechanics required to be a good skier."The Ultimate Guide to Weight Training" ignores all these frames.

Rather it is a standard rehash for a general strength program - it might as well been written and targeted for badminton players and weekend anything.

5-0 out of 5 stars good book - worth the money

This is the most helpful book I have found for advice on locating or constructing a weight lifting program to meet your goals. The authors are obviously experts because their advice is backed with reason and covers a wide spectrum of needs - just what you expect from consultants who know both theory and practice of their field.Whether you are a beginner or advanced lifter, young or old, this book will put you on a progression of good programs for a very long time.

The book helps you assess your current readiness for weight lifting, and encourages you to think about your goals as being in one of three areas: muscle toning, body shaping, or strength building.Of course there is overlap between these since any program will accomplish some of these elements, but it is a matter of emphasis in the program you will follow. Then the book has nice color coded charts for 6 different zones which are basically your starting experience level for any one of the three goals. There are also alternate week and month ideas to really help you get the most time out of these plans. The recommended programs usually last one month and then encourage you to switch to another for continued progress. Most programs introduce slight variations at week 3 as well. There are 2, 3 and 4 day a week programs depending upon your goal and experience (color zone).

There are lots of charts and helpful calendars, etc. You can copy the charts to track your progress. By using these tools you can learn more about how to design your own programs and the authors talk you through that as well.

It is important to know what this book is not.It is not a detailed exercise manual showing lots of different exercises and their variations. There is an exercise appendix so if this were your only book, you could do the programs, but exercise details are not the emphasis of this book. Nor is nutrition, or detailed anatomy diagrams - both are mentioned briefly.

This is a great book of sound weight lifting programs for most of us.I say most of us, because expert body builders will probably find most of this book too easy or obvious for their needs. But for most of us it represents a tremendously helpful set of programs and ideas to get us from wherever we are to being more advanced lifters.

1-0 out of 5 stars Only good for beginners
This book is only good if you have never stepped foot in a gym. More than half the exercises are longer than 60 min and no mention of diet.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cheap but mediocre
This book has a decent amount of basic material and is worth the ten dollar price tag. A good chunk of the book is filled with mostly repetitious tables about color coded training 'zones', information which could have been compressed into a few pages. I was looking for more details about diet and fat loss which I didn't find.

Apart from that, the binding quality is poor and the pages are coming out of my book after only a couple of months of use. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for anyone starting a weight training training program
I was struggling with starting a weight training program as I had never done weights before. This book lays it out on how start on a program and key elements for strenght training.I have been on program for 3-weeks and already see improvements.Like the feeling after training.I am starting with machines to prevent injury. My ultimate goal is to progress to free weights that I can do at home or the gym.

2-0 out of 5 stars Reads Like and Advert for Gyms
This book has nothing to do with being over 50.It is an exercise book written primarily around the use of gym weight machines.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I'm 58 and just started working out and had no idea what I was doing. This book really helps you get started.I like it because it has beginner, intermediate, and advanced routines so I can grow with it.And it has machine AND free weight routines for each level. It also explains why you are doing what you are doing. One drawback.....although the pictures and explanations of the exercises are great, they aren't organized very well.I solved that by just writing down the page number of each exercise in the routines.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful to the elder exerciser.
A great method of education for those who are older, but want to be wiser about their fitness. Know your machines and "what" they work. Know your body parts and "how" they work. Wisdom saves time. Be wise, learn, then burn (calories).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great response
