Product Description

"The process of gathering these images reminded me of the Bible's effortless ability to reinvent itself for each generation and each new way of searching."
—Bruce Feiler

Its stories may be the best known in the world, but its locations have long been a mystery. Where did Noah's ark land? Where did Moses receive the Ten Commandments? Where are the lost cities of Sodom and Gomorrah? Now, in Walking the Bible: A Photographic Journey, New York Times bestselling author Bruce Feiler offers an unprecedented heart-stirring adventure through the landscape of some of history's most storied events.

Featuring Bruce Feiler's own photography as well as his selections from professional collections, Walking the Bible: A Photographic Journey brings together breathtaking vistas, intimate portraits, and fascinating panoramas, providing firsthand access to the inscrutable land where three of the world's great religions were born—and finally puts a face on the stories that have long inspired the human spirit.

Over several years, Feiler traveled nearly ten thousand miles through the deserts of the Middle East, which led first to his runaway national bestseller Walking the Bible. This new illustrated book follows his route, offering a thrilling photographic voyage through the actual places of some of the Bible's most memorable events—from the heights of Mount Ararat, where Noah's ark landed, to the desert outpost in Turkey, where Abraham first heard the words of God, to the summit where Moses overlooked the Promised Land.

Walking the Bible: A Photographic Journey chronicles a landscape that nurtured the relationship between humans and the divine, breathing new meaning into stories that have been a timeless source of inspiration.

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful book, great gift
I purchased this book last year as a Christmas gift for my grandmother. The photos are lovely and the accompanying text proved just right for a non-reader - interesting captions and short readable paragraphs, nothing lengthy. She was very happy with it and later said it was "beautiful and interesting to read and look through". Several of us enjoyed looking through it on Christmas day, and we were all impressed with it overall.

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful photographs
We bought this book for my father-in-law.My husband was skeptical because he wasn't sure he would have the time to read a book.My 8-year-old daughter looked through the whole book before we wrapped it, exclaming on just about every page, "Oh, this is so beautiful!" and then said, "This will be okay for Grandad, it's mostly pictures."He did seem to like it on Christmas Day ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Much to be desired.
This book is NOT what I expected. It is just full of one-sentence quotes and...that's it. The quotes are inspiring, but they don't assist in "Walking the Red Road." Its like a daily calader...but in book form. A let down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Some people expect way too much!
Regardless of the tripe some reviewers have written (native & non-native)this little
book has some very good lessons for people of all colors.I agree that it is brief &
maybe lacks enough wording to call it a "book",but it serves it's purpose well. You
get many quotes from famous Native Americans as well brief spiritual lessons that
you can meditate on.This book was not meant to be a "how to" book.Instead a book
with short offerings for you to decide, what to do with them.YES,I am a person of
Native American heritage and not some Wanna Be,Instant Indian. So I know and really
appreciate where the author is coming from. And if there are any clever critics out
there, hit me up when you write your own masterpiece book on Native American Spirituality.Let's see if any of you can do better! AHO!

4-0 out of 5 stars First Pitch Strike!
If the trend continues, reading a couple more Reed Farrel Coleman books should put him in my upper echelon of favorite noir/crime writers. I enjoyed this book for all the reasons that make it atypical of the genre, mainly in the personality of the main character. Our narrator/protagonist Moe Prager is a good-hearted man, but also with a darker side that we only see sometimes via his actions and some of the choices he makes. That makes him more human and real than many characters that populate the majority of multi-book crime series. Also really enjoyed how NYC becomes a kind of character in the book. That always scores points with me!

If I were to make any complains about this book, I would say some of the interactions with the psychiatrist seemed a bit heavy in exposition, but not so much to distract. And I sometimes got confused in the time period jumping, but I think that is only because I read the bulk of it while either very tired and reading on the plane, or reading in the midst of many other distractions. Nonetheless, I much-enjoyed this book, and can't wait to dig into the next one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reed does good
I recently discovered that a classmate of mine from the 9th grade, Reed Coleman, has several books published.Wow!So without hesitation I picked up 'Walking the Perfect Square' to see if Reed has done good. And I am happy to report that he indeed has done good.Very good.

'Walking the Perfect Square' is essentially like so many other crime mystery paperbacks written nowadays.Ex-cop in New York is hired to find a missing person.Various shenanigans ensue, interesting characters pop up, and everything is wrapped up in an ending with just enough twist to keep you smiling. The prose is solid, the characterizations believable, and the dialog crisp. No, the book is not at the level of some of the works by, say, Dennis Lehane. But 'Walking the Perfect Square' is a very solid effort.Reed, you did Reynolds Junior High School proud.

Bottom line: a deceptively effortless mystery novel that delivers entertainment value.Recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Mystery
I picked this one up because the star of the series is a New York Jew. My kind of guy. I frankly wasn't expecting much, but was very pleasantly surprised. Reed Coleman is a very good writer, much better than most writers of this sort of fiction, and Moe Prager is a captivating and human hero who it is easy to cheer on.

The story is a standard PI haunted by a case he can't forget, but the way it is plotted is well done, the characters expertly drawn, issue of sexuality and mental illness are handled with a care you rarely see in detective fiction and the descriptions of New York are done in the loving and authentic way only a native of the city can accomplish. Prager is drawn as the opposite of the standard hard boiled detective. He is a caring and thoughtful person. He loves his kid, and wants to do right by his family and his client. Notably, his religion plays a much smaller role than I was expecting from the way the series was sold to me by a friend. Sure sometimes the writing was a little over done, and yes some of the jokes are pretty corny, but this is a great read for anyone interested in detective fiction, New York in the Seventies, or just a pretty damn good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent series
This is the first book in a (currently?) five book series. The whole series is excellent. This book, as well as having its own crime to solve, provides an introduction to the other four books and to events and characters that are returned to in greater detail in the other books. It's probably best to read this book first.I sought this series after hearing a review of it on the radio (NPR?) this past spring.Having read the whole series from my local library network, I have now bought all five books to give this coming Christmas to someone who enjoys detective stories.I see the name of the author, Reed Farrel Coleman, in acknowledgments of books by other detective fiction writers, and there is an excellent six-part video interview of him at the Poisoned Pen Press website which provides personal background I found relevant to his writing.

4-0 out of 5 stars First in a great mystery series.
Reed Farrel Coleman is an author I have newly started to follow. His Moe Prager series is, so far, what I would consider to be one of the best mystery series ever published. "Walking the Perfect Square" is not a perfect book by any means. Its writing style is clunky, its story jumps around a little too often, and its characters actions hinge a little too tightly to the unfolding plot. All of that aside, this is still a really good book.

The story jumps back and forth from 1977 to 1998. In 77, Prager is looking back at his career as a police officer and forwards to what lay ahead. A few years before Prager managed to find a missing kid rather miraculously and now he is being tapped by a high powered public servant to find his missing kid. This is the story of that investigation.

In 98, Prager is 20 years on in his life, but is still resolving questions from his 77' case. You only catch snip-its here of this story, its where Coleman packs his punches in the end after a nice long set up. As I said above, I felt like the characters were being fleshed out to fit into a plot structure. Of course your going to find this in any book you ever pick up, but here Coleman comes across as an author with blinders on, unwilling to see anything outside of his immediate scope. Primarily its the involved detail that Coleman plays with that gets this story just crackling. So, and I know Im not doing a great job of explaining this, when a character does something sort of outlandish, and by doing so furthers the story along, I think it hurts the over all experience.

I would say that this is one of the two or two or three best mystery series' out their right now. Stieg Larsson's posthumous trilogy is shockingly good. I dont think you have to start with this book, but it might be best if you did. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Small Group leader resource
This is a great book for all leaders of church small groups. It is not the usual "how to" book on small groups, but rather has great tools on how to improve group dynamics.Anyone who has led a small group for sometime will readily identify with the group tensions that are presented. It will be encouraging to all leaders to know that they do not need to "fix" the problems of their groups as much as just bringing opposing tensions into balance. There is even an important section included at the back of the book to work through these group dynamics with your own group and let them take ownership for creating a healthier group.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
One of the best books we have come across for practical application. This book is not theory about what "should" happen, but actual experience in what "does" happen in small groups. We recommend that all our small group leaders read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Walking the Small Group Tightrope: Meeting the Challenges Every Group Faces
This is an awesome book about home based small groups.Another companion book "The Seven Deadly Sins of a Small Group Ministry" is a must read too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Setting and balancing goals in small group facilitating
"Tightrope" was a lifeline as our 350 member church approached the launch of our small groups ministry after 18 months of intense study and preparation. It artfully provides the reality that every aspect of small group life involves competing worthy goals ie: caring vs Bible knowledge. Which deserves more time? How to decide? Have I even considered the goal opposite the one to which I'm dedicated? Are you even aware of the 12 goals? They are intuitive once you've read about them. The opposing goals are the anchors of each 'tightrope' and we leaders determine how close to or how far from each extreme we are. AND the balance point shifts depending on the group life at that heartbeat. Wow. A new leader, convinced she could not possibly BE a leader, read "Tightrope" and said, "Oh. Now I get it. I can do this!" Truly, this book can make an 'Ah Ha!' difference in small group stewardship. Again, thank you, Willow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Walking the Small Group Tightrope
Before I opened Walking the Small Group Tightrope, I feared another formula for "how to do small groups." But Donahue and Robinson provide fresh insight into the realistic tensions of small groups. Through their experiences, they share failures and successes.
Donahue and Robinson claim, "Each chapter will identify the challenge, define the inherent dynamics of the tension, describe what happens when groups lean too far toward one end of the continuum, and offer suggestions and tools so leaders can help their groups manage these polarities." The hope: leaders gain the skill to walk that tightrope. Overall, they fulfill their promise.
The authors, experienced pastors of small group ministries, who've overseen thousands of groups, studied their failures as small group leaders. Through these failures, they identified six challenges. Each chapter of this book defines one of the six challenges. And every challenge presents two tensions, creating the ends of the tightrope. For example, "the learning challenge" creates the tensions of truth and life. The other tensions consist of care and discipleship, friendship and accountability, kindness and confrontation, task and people, openness and intimacy. Small group leaders must find the balance between the two polar extremes. A target in the middle of the tightrope balances the continuum and gives the leader an aim.Tools and suggestions facilitate next steps.
The identification of the six challenges, definitions of the tensions, examples of the polar extremes and tools assist in management of these tensions. The real life stories and the honesty engage the reader. The authors reveal real struggles of small group ministry without pat answers. They give insight into identifying group challenges as well as ways to spot where the reader's small group walks on that tightrope continuum. ... Product Description
A fascinating, definitive, and very personal rumination on the history, science, philosophy, art, and literature of walking, by a skilled cultural commentator.

Geoff Nicholson, author of Bleeding London and Sex Collectors, turns his eye to the intellectual and cultural history of that most common of activities—walking. This simple, omnipresent activity has inspired numerous subcultures, literary and artistic legacies, sporting events, personal memories, epic journeys, mystical revelations, and scandals.

It’s a rich tradition that embraces such novelists as Charles Dickens and Paul Auster, musicians like Robert Johnson and Bob Dylan, and moviemakers from Buster Keaton to Werner Herzog. But it’s also a tradition that includes obsessives and eccentrics, such as the artist Mudman, who coats his body in mud and then walks the city streets; competitive pedestrians such as Captain Barclay, who walked one mile an hour for a thousand successive hours; and gang members who use the hidden language of the “Crip Walk” to spell out messages in the dirt with their scuffing. How we walk, where we walk, why we walk announces who and what we are.

Geoff Nicholson is a master chronicler of the hidden subversive twists on a seemingly normal activity. He analyzes the hows, wheres, and whys of walking through the ages. He finds people who walk only at night, or naked, or for thousands of miles at a time, in costume, for causes, or for no reason whatsoever. Here, he brings curiosity and genuine insight to a subject that often walks right past us. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun, but unnecessary
In some ways, Nicholson is a lot like Bill Bryson--a British/American with a rambling anecdotal style full of tangents and fun facts. As the title suggests, the book is about walking. Nicholson skims some walking-related science, addresses a number of famous walkers throughout history, but mainly just talks about himself. He is especially fascinated by those who performed great feats of walking for no reason in particular.

"The Lost Art of Walking" could have been a lot better. But it could have been worse, too. Despite the lack of solid content, Nicholson manages to carry it along with his funny, engaging tone.

5-0 out of 5 stars MUST READ THIS FASCINATING, AMUSING BOOK!!
Geoff Nicholson's exceptionally well-written book is a fascinating compilation of every aspect of walking. He enthralled me with tales of literary, eccentric, competitive, political, moon, inventor, artistic and recreational walkers...detailing many of their remarkable feats. His walking experiences and unusual people/things he's seen were delightfully described.I was intrigued by interesting walking tours, expeditions, journeys, songs with "walk" and walking scenes in movies.Mr. Nicholson astounded and entertained me with his impressive knowledge of walking!Amusing stories and trivia provided many laugh-out-loud moments.I really, truly loved this book because it greatly enhanced my cognizance of walking. Many of Mr. Nicholson's insightful comments gave me alot to think about. My favorite is...simply going for a walk is an invitation to a surprize!I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS READ!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
"In 1962, John F. Kennedy, recently come to office, discovered an executive order issued by Theodore Roosevelt in 1956 ....." Huh? Didn't President Theodore 'Teddy' Roosevelt die in 1919?This was the first book by Nicholson that I read, but he really seems to just phone it in.

3-0 out of 5 stars A ramble
The Lost Art of Walking: The History, Science, and Literature of Pedestrianism
If you have about four free hours available you could either read this book or go for an extended walk.Provided your surroundings are sufficiently inviting and it is a pleasant day, you may prefer the walk.

Nicholson is not promoting walking as a social cause. He believes we cannot expect grand changes in people's willingness to walk when they have more convenient alternatives available. He says that he himself walks not because it is environmentally correct, but because it keeps him sane and it helps him write.

The book is a ramble, a wandering.Do not expect systematic accounts of the history, science, philosophy, or literature of pedestrianism, as the subtitle suggests.Instead, what you will get is a potpourri of ruminations, many only tangentially related to walking, held together only by the thread of Nicholson's own idiosyncratic preoccupations.

Fortunately, Nicholson seems to be an interesting fellow, one you might want to accompany on a good walk. His polished and lightly humorous essay style keeps things moving.

Some of the author's material comes from his own walks.I found his chapter on walking in Los Angles more compelling than those on New York and London, perhaps partly because walking in Los Angeles is not an activity that is often commended. It will help sustain your interest if you are at least vaguely familiar with his featured locations.

Nicholson also draws from literature, film, music, photography, and painting.A few of his choices may enhance your understanding or appreciation for walking; most likely will not.He writes in an ironic tone about several concept art endeavors that have involved walking, in some cases only marginally, at best.

There is a chapter on the accomplishments of several notable obsessive walkers, the kind whose achievements we might read about in a book of world records (I think it is to Nicholson's credit that he resisted entitling this chapter "Walking Feats").Unless you are quite well-versed in this history of eccentric walkers already, you will probably be amused or astounded (or both) by at least a few of them.

The book includes a possibly useful bibliography.Nicholson provides the web address if you would like to view over 60 photos (of people, mostly) he has taken on his walks.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's far from art
This book has undoubtedly grabbed an interesting subject matter; however, the author has ruined it. The author, out of pain and his 'walking accident', has tried to amuse his readers with his insights and cultural history of the most banal predicament in our everyday lives. But his discussion in all chapters is shallow. The so-called inclusion of literary texts fails to make an enlightening point, but succeeds in producing an endless tirade on 'walking' so as to satisfy the author's own narcisstic ego of telling his own stories. ... I gave this book to my husband who has just started making walking sticks and he loved it.He stated "for a novice it's a great starter book"."Lots of ideas"."Great asset to my hobby".

4-0 out of 5 stars Classy Walking Sticks
Having recently useda walking stick, and knowing many others who could benefit but do not, I decided to look into the stick as a work of art that also adds a touch of class.

As I read more, I was impressed with the beauty and utility of the simple walking stick. This book was a good introduction to the technique of construction and to some of the woods available.

I do not know how far I will go as far as actually creating one myself, but I feel I am better informed and can hopefully encourage others who may benefit to look at them, not as a sign of advancing disability, but as something that makes the statement "I have arrived" with a little class.

Product Description
Charleston: A Historic Walking Tour will help natives and visitors alike appreciate the history and residents of this beautiful city. With its architecture, palm trees, and cobblestone streets, Charleston is one of the South's great cultural destinations. Its ballrooms and benevolent society halls attest to grand periods of opulence and high living. The theater, libraries, museum, and college show an appreciation for culture and sophistication. But don't let the city's beauty hide its turbulent history. The horrors of bombardment and occupation by conquering armies have left their marks. The city has experienced bleak times and disasters, including fires, a devastating earthquake, and hurricanes, not to mention the challenges of Reconstruction. Yet Charleston has survived its darker days, and now may be the city's finest hour. Neighborhoods from Calhoun Street to the Battery are in better condition today than they have ever been before. This book offers three tours to explore the historic downtown: the Meeting Street loop, the Legare Street loop, and the Ansonborough tour. Enjoy the walk, and let the city tell you its story. ... Product Description
Since the tide of interest created by Black Elk Speaks over 70 years ago, Native American lineage holders have been cautious about sharing their spiritual truths to the reading public because the essence of this wisdom has been so often misunderstood. In Walking with Grandfather, authentic Lakota lineage holder and award-winning storyteller Joseph M. Marshall breaks this silence with the very best from a lifetime of lessons passed on to him by his grandfather. With him, readers gain access to the timeless teachings that until now remained largely unheard outside the culture of the Lakota people. Part of an unbroken series of narratives dating back countless centuries, this rare new transmission includes Marshall’s rendition of legendary stories such as: • "The Way of Wolves"—important lessons about parenting • "The Shadow Man"—a story on war and the warrior within us all• "Follow Me"—reflections on leaders and leadership• "The Wisdom Within"—the passage of truly becoming an elder—plus many more stories found both in the book and in the author’s own words on the accompanying audio CD.

"We believe that life’s gift to us is wisdom," explains Joseph M. Marshall, "and that it is the one gift that must be given back." Join this master of traditional storytelling as he takes us through the rich oral history of the Lakota—and shows us how we can rediscover the invaluable wisdom of our elders. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Expected something better
The book was okay. Some of the chapters were insightful, but overall not as inspirational as I had hoped.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
There was not a heck of a lot of Native wisdom in this book.It was tedious to read and not worth the overall effort put in to find the tidbits of what the elders thought.

5-0 out of 5 stars gentle book
This is a very nice, easy to read book. A nice "upper". Marshall is truly an exceptional writer of the highest caliber.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our Heritage
I connected to this book immediately. Somehow we have lost that connection with our Elders. There is so much knowledge not being conveyed. Kids today with their electronic gadgets are in their own worlds. This book is easy reading and the author provides a strong sense of respect and love as he grew up with his Grandfather. Many boys of today are not exposed to face to face communication with their Grandfathers or Fathers for that matter. There is a magic to all of this and sadly it is not being used. My heritage is French-Indian and I am very proud of that. In this tradition I have shared my stories and thoughts with my Grand daughters and it is sometimes funny to hear them repeat them with my mannerisms. These are the things that they will remember. So put the your gadgets down and have the kids do the same and read this book young and old and make it a point to sit with your children and talk.

Product Description

For more than four years, Martin McGartland lived the astonishing double life of a secret agent. To the IRA, he was a trusted Intelligence Office and an integral member of an active service unit. To the British Government however, he was known only as Agent Carol. Martin McGartland is credited by British Intelligence with saving the lives of at least 50 people. Every time he tipped off the authorities, he risked detection and yet, heroically and fearlessly, he continued to pass on life-saving information. Finally, his cover was blown. Martin was taken from Sinn Fein headquarters in Belfast to an IRA safehouse for questioning and almost certain execution. Though guarded by armed men, in a desperate bid for freedom, he dived from a third floor window. This breathtaking story is now a major film starring Sir Ben Kingsley and Jim Sturgess.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't be pro IRA.
After reading some of the apparently pro IRA comments here I thought I'd like to add a few comments.

British were not a hostile occupying or invading power. The British army was sent to Northern Ireland to in part protect the Catholic community from victimisation by the majority Protestant community. The British army was initially welcomed by the Catholic community and the problems only began when the British quite rightly set about disarming all paramilitary sectarian groups and not just Protestant ones.

There is no denying that the IRA and other terrorist groups committed a wide range of crimes from torture, mass murder and indeed crimes against humanity through to extortion and other crimes more usually associated with more ordinary Mafia like organised crime. How some Americans can defend or excuse the IRA baffles me as does the fact that Americans bankrolled the IRA for years and thus were complicit in the crimes and atrocities they committed.

You can criticise the Northern Irish and British Army and police for some of their actions but I'd ask you to look at their actions in context and measure them against the performance of the US army and police and the acts they have committed in the USA and wider world.

How would you Americans feel if your family members were blown apart in a bar while out enjoying themselves by a terrorist organisation funded by a European country? Doubtless you'd be incensed?

Martin McGarland was a petty criminal but that's nothing to what the IRA were. He took a stand against them and in doing so saved the lives of many people at great personal cost. In my opinion he's a real hero and deserves our praise. The IRA members who's only heroism is to plant a bomb under a car or in a bar or to shoot an off duty policeman in the back of the head or to knee cap a petty criminal deserve nothing but our condemnation.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your Money...........
Was it worth it Martin? Hero is no word for a hood turned tout.

Recommended reading would be a book called "Ten men Dead" about real men and real heroes who suffered at the hands of Thatchers Government and the RUC, a far more truthful account of the troubles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Linda (A Scot In U.S.A)
Tremendous book . I had Read It Several Years ago , When i was in the Uk, saw it on Amazon , and read it again .
Martin Mc Gartland is a tribute to the Irish People .
A young man who became an agent for the special branch, knowing that if he was found out by the IRA it would mean Torture , then certain Death.....
He was known as 'agent Carol' and gave vital information which saved many lives both protestant and catholic.
His title of the book "Fifty Dead Men Walking" is an understatement , i truly believe he saved alot more than fifty.
It is an essential read, and also to read his second book "dead Man Running"Thankyou Martin , for all you have sacrificed.....

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstandingly gripping.
The moment I started to read this book I couldn't put it down. I read it in a day and even now months later I remember it like I read it yesterday. 5-0 out of 5 stars Unflinching, Yet Warm
Leah is a young, married, Southern woman whose life is falling apart. And not in the oops-I-broke-a-nail way. Her dependency on alcohol to deaden the pain from real traumas, both past and ongoing, has become the main problem. She checks into a rehab center against her husband's wishes and strips away the layers of her life until she is naked before the reader.

With this debut book, Allan shows she's not afraid to portray the private world of a troubled woman in an unflinching, but warm, way. Because this book is probably the least "Christian" feeling book I've read in the CBA market, I highly recommend it for book clubs. The heart of the novel clearly ascribes to the healing power of the Lord, but Allan's words are lyrical, gritty, sometimes funny, and true to life. I guarantee the club will have a lot to discuss on meeting night!

5-0 out of 5 stars Broken Reality
I love Christa Allan's ability to show the broken reality of her main character without losing hope. Love the surprises in this book. Love her willingness to write a daring book with broken people. I loved the book when I first started reading. Honestly, after that I started to wonder ... will I continue liking this? Because her main character is so real. It's like so many people in publishing say, "Readers want an escape from reality, not reality." But the more I read, the more real this story became. So real that I couldn't deny its beauty. And I can't agree with the "escape from reality" thing. We need more reality in fiction. Reality so gritty that it stings, then real hope to point you toward the beauty of God's grace. Wow. Can't wait to read the sequel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Redemption we can all relate to
I just finished "Walking on Broken Glass" and enjoyed it immensely. It took me a little while to get into the book, because the main character, Leah, is an alcoholic who has decided to admit herself to rehab. I wasn't sure I could relate. But pretty quickly I began to relate to Leah in terms of her struggle to build balanced relationships with friends and family; her questioning of God and why He let's bad things happen; and the ongoing process of learning who she is.

I don't want to spoil anything, but I also really liked the way this book ends. It's a good ending, it just doesn't tie everything up in a neat package. You know, like life!

4-0 out of 5 stars Walking on Broken Glass

Leah Thornton's life got derailed in front of the frozen apple juice in the supermarket. Leaving her groceries, Leah leaves the store only to be confronted by a friend that she is a drunk, her life is out of control, and she needs to get help before its too late. But Leah is coping the best she knows how after the premature death of her daughter.

When Leah admits her friend is right and agrees to go into rehab, will Leah be able to deal with this decision? Will she be able to sacrifice what she wants to get what she needs? Or will she let her marriage and her faith suffer for her decisions?

WALKING ON BROKEN GLASS is the debut novel by talented author Christa Allan. Ms. Allan is a southern woman who can write about a southern woman with the kind of confidence that comes from knowing how they would react. And she has the talent to take the serious and not so pretty side of life and write about it with power, passion, and the ability to bring the reader into the story.

WALKING ON BROKEN GLASS is not a fluff story. This one is full of the nitty-gritty side of life, the not-so-pretty part. Leah is a woman who hasn't dealt with some bad blows very well but doesn't know how else to cope. The reader has to admire her courage to even listen to her friend when she is approached. The reader will cheer Leah on through out the pages of this book as Leah is forced to deal with the ugly picture of her life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Debut novel is awesome!
Being a child of an alcoholic I could completely relate to this book! While my Dad never spent time in Rehab he fought diligently to stay sober and through Gods help he did that successfully for 32 years before He passed away last December.

Leah is a young woman who is married and really doesn't know herself at all! She has allowed people and circumstances to dictate her life until one day her best friend confronts her about her excessive drinking. Leah decides that she should really listen and makes the decision to enter rehab. Will Leah find herself? Will her marriage be able to withstand her not drinking any longer?

Learning to live life without your addiction, maintaining relationships or healing those from the past demand facing and conquering those issues and Christa Allan does a phenomenal job sharing the steps, the pain, the truth and determination it takes to be successful. I appreciate how she shares how Faith gave her the Strength to do the Work she was responsible for doing, not just asking God for help but allowing the LORD and His word to show her the way and doing her part as well!

I highly recommend this book! Heart of a Bookworm gives "Walking on Broken Glass"5 stars ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational and for me, life-changing
As a 67-year-old woman who had never done any cardio work in my life, I became interested in walking when I signed up to walk a half-marathon. I had about six months to train for it, so I decided to invest in a book so that I would know the proper gait and pace. I wanted to make sure I didn't hurt myself preparing for the half-marathon. In my research, I came upon this book and read the reviews. I bought the book and devoured it. It is very informative and inspiring. As I write this review, I am three months into my six month preparation and have taken brisk walking truly to heart. The most amazing thing to me is that since I started brisk walking, using the techniques and approaches that Casey Meyers recommends, I have stopped having headaches. For over two years I have suffered with a nagging headache and have undergone all the high-tech testing to try to diagnose the problem, to no avail. I can't say for sure that the brisk walking was what cured my headaches, and I'm not a physician, but I cannot pin it on anything else. If that weren't enough, I've also shed pounds, gone down a size in clothing, and I feel fantastic. This is a great book if you want to know how to correctly use the simple act of walking to improve your life.

2-0 out of 5 stars A terribly flawed book....
I agree with the other reviews that fault the author's effort to portray running as an inherently injurious and inappropriate form of exercise.

However, far more egregious is the author's misunderstanding of the bio-mechanics of walking (and running). The reader could do serious damage to himself or herself if the book's description of walking is closely followed.

The author describes the act of walking as one in which the lower leg is extended in front of the body and the weight of the body comes down on the heel. The illustrations and photos in the book show walkers landing on their heels. Unfortunately, this is known as over-striding and results in a braking effect as well as injury to the shins and knees. The proper form is to land mid-foot and roll onto the balls of your feet. This is accomplished by tilting the pelvis forward slightly, taking shorter strides, pushing off your trailing foot when it is behind the body, and landing on the forward foot when it is just about underneath your center of gravity so that when the full weight of your body is on the foot, it is directly underneath you. Try running a few steps landing on your heels. Then try it landing mid-foot. The difference is obvious.

To be fair, the author's (mis)understanding of walking and running was once very common. The book's original publication more than 15 years ago suggests that other information in it may also be seriously outdated.

Oddly and sadly, the author acknowledges that he has had BOTH KNEES replaced. It is almost perverse that the book is based on an understanding of how to walk that can result in severe injury to the knees and that the author has himself been a victim of his own misunderstanding.

As an exercise enthusiast, I am happy to hear that readers have found this book inspirational. However, given its flaws, the publisher should decline to re-print it any further. There are many other excellent exercise books that don't contain such a fundamental flaw.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's Great !
This is an excellent book for the walker or runner ... great tips for the walker to help with the exercise - andgreat tips for the runner to see how to save the knees ! It's an easy read and enjoyable, too.It should be on every runner/walker's book shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most inspiring book on walking I've read
I was a runner, but began researching walking, because of injuries.I found "Walking: A Complete Guide to the Complete Exercise", just what I needed right down to where to buy my walking shoes!!

The illustrations are excellent and the concepts are easy to follow. If you want to improve your walking experience or want to begin a walking program, this is the book for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on walking
I read this book two years ago and was so excited I started walking with gusto there and then. Don't think you can't injure yourself by walking because you can and quite badly too. I completely overdid it for my fitness level and injured my achilles tendon and the tendons that run along the botton of the heel. I wish I had taken Meyers advice then and saved myself alot of time and pain. I am now back walking and starting from the beginning taking the advice from the book. The point about reaching frequency and duration goals before intensity goals is a very important one. This book is brilliant with lots of advice on how to start and how to progress. I have read alot of walking books but none are as thorough and good as this one. It might be quite old now but I wouldn't be without it. My only advice is don't get over enthusiastic by his zeal and work within your fitness. Push a little but not too hard. ... Read more

Product Description

Greta Cahill never believed she would leave her village in the west of Ireland until she found herself on a ship bound for New York, along with her sister Johanna and a boy named Michael Ward. Greta discovers that in America she can fall in love, raise her own family, and earn a living.

Though she longs to return and show her family what she has made of herself, her decision to spare her children knowledge of a secret in her past forces her to keep her life in New York separate from the life she once loved in Ireland, and tears her from the people she holds closest. Even fifty years later, when the Ireland of her memory bears little resemblance to that of the present day, she fears that it is still possible to lose all when she discovers that her children—with the best of intentions—have conspired to unite the worlds she’s so carefully kept separate for decades.

A beautifully old-fashioned novel, The Walking People is a debut of remarkable range and power.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I wanted so much to love this book ... and initially, I thought I would. After a beginning that engages the reader, the author began to skip periods of time and resorted to interwoven "flashbacks" to fill in the missing time. Unfortunately, that tactic was disruptive and confusing and prevented development of the characters and the plots. The ending was abrupt, serving only to leave the reader hanging with no hint of the future of the characters or resolution of the situation. All in all, a disappointing read.

4-0 out of 5 stars A story of the immigrant experience
I think this book is well worth reading particularly if you want a better understanding of the experience of immigrants and their children. I think this book is remarkable because it has no axe to grind, just an imaginative treatment of how this family's life was affected by their background and settling in the United States.

If you are Irish or interested in the Irish, this is especially interesting. It contains information about conditions in Ireland several decades ago which may be applicable today in some of the more isolated areas. One of the special features of this book is that the life of the "travelers" is described. These are part of Irish society whose life style included a special language and travelling from place to place in caravans. They can be compared in several ways to Gypsies.

It is also important to understanding aspects of immigration. The family lost touch with their family "back home" due to misunderstandings which resulted from the difficulties of distance and misunderstandings from lack of communication.

For me, the book started slowly, but as I kept reading I became quite engaged with the family and their background and how immigration affected their approach to life and the perceptions of their children.I recommend this book for special interests especially if you or your relatives are immigrants from any country.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
The walking people was an intriguing read on many levels. There are some excellent segments, including some wonderfully written correspondence that lend detail and credibility to the story, but there was something missing that I can't put my finger on.Its not a book I'd read over and over, but it was good once through.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary account of everyday people
The Walking People is an extraordinary account of everyday people that transported me to my ancestral home.It is not your typical Irish-American saga in that the main characters immigrated to America in 1963.

Rather than provide a plot synopsis, my recommendation of this book is based on pure emotion. When I wasn't reading it, I was thinking about it and even dreaming about it.Maybe because it is dotted with names from my own family --- McDonough, Hogan, Quinn. It could be the lines spoken by Michael's Traveler parents that will stay with me forever.Perhaps it's the fact that I found Greta so endearing in her awkwardness ("She has a kind of a look" - Frank McCourt called it "the odd manner").

This is a story of Family, Deep Dark Secrets and Work - certainly nothing new under the sun. What is new is the voice of a brilliant young author whose roots belie her age.I have hope for the next generation.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hard to walk through...
I absolutely LOVED the first chapter of this book. Unfortunately, the first chapter was followed by a whole bunch of other chapters which I found it hard to get through. I clearly am not part of the popular opinion of this book since other reviewers loved it but I found it boring and a bit flat. I ended up skimming a bit but since I wasn't really reading it, I didn't care enough about the characters to read to the end. The writing definitely has potential since I enjoyed the first chapter so much - I'm not really sure what happened on the rest of it. ... Read more

Product Description
In this exquisitely produced book, the influential American photographer Robert Adams revisits the classic collection of nocturnal landscapes that he began making in the mid-1970s near his former home in Longmont, Colorado. Originally published by Aperture in 1985 as Summer Nights, this new edition has been carefully reedited and resequenced by the photographer, who has added 39 previously unpublished images. Illuminated by moonlight and streetlamp, the houses, roads, sidewalks and fields in Summer Nights, Walking retain the wonder and stillness of the original edition, while adopting the artist's intention of a dreamy fluidity, befitting his nighttime perambulations. The extraordinary care taken with the new reproductions also registers Adams' attention to the subtleties of the night, and conveys his appeal to look again at places we might have dismissed as uninteresting. Adams observes, "What attracted me to the subjects at a new hour was the discovery then of a neglected peace." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Summer Nights, Walking
I agree and disagree with the first review of this book. I agree the photographs are great (of course Robert Adams doesn't know how to make a bad photograph) but I disagree about the comments concerning poor printing. Quite on the contrary I feel the printing is far superior to "Summer Nights". The photographs in this new edition have blacks with tremendous depth and the highlights seem to radiate. Simply the difference between the two books maybe that the images in "Summer Nights, Walking" are quieter.I like this book so much I plan to buy a bunch of copies to give over the Holidays.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, disappointing printing
I am a Robert Adams fan (I've reviewed quite a few of his other books), but this particular book is a bit of a disappointment, not because of the photographs, but because of the printing. The original book, published in 1985 (and remaindered until recently) was printed on glossy paper, and the images seem to shine with the glow of lights in the night. The new printing (done by Meridian Printing, so you know they paid a pretty penny for this version) is on matte paper, and at least on first viewing, the prints seem muddy.Picking it up again to write this review, and viewed in dimmer light rather than diffuse sunlight, some of the images do seem to possess a bit of a glow...But on the whole, I think I prefer the earlier printing...

Unlike the recently republished "Denver", which remained largely intact with the addition of a few new images (and better printing), this effort is a much more dramatic re-editing of an idea, and the new paper surface seems to push the whole project into murkier territory.Sitting down with both versions of the book--it appears that only about half the images are included in both projects (and some of the common images are baffling in both places...)

This project reminds me a bit of something I once read about Walt Whitman, who published only one book in his life--"Leaves of Grass"--but he repeatedly revised the book, sometimes changing the words in some of his poems, often adding and removing entire poems.Later critics would often note that his changes would often result in leaving out some very strong early poems--but something needs to be done to make way for new work.

It often takes me about five years to figure out what Bob is up to (sometimes longer)--so I'm sure that my judgment is premature--but here's my suggestion--if you have a choice, buy the 1985 printing (for sure)--it's been one of those hidden gems--and maybe the new version will age nicely on the shelf...In the long run, I've never been disappointed by Bob, and I think there is a lot of hope for this newest addition.

Walking is a super sport for health, weight loss, stress reduction, and management of a number of medical conditions. Prevention's Complete Book of Walking gives you every piece of information you need for stepping out, including choosing shoes, clothing, treadmills, gadgets, location, technique, speed, and walking vacations, plus advice about diet, strength training, and yoga. Learn how to train for a race, whether a 5K (3.1 miles) walk/run is your speed, a marathon (26.2 miles), or volkswalk (6.2 miles). You'll learn a new way of walking from the six-week "dynamic walking" program included here. Dynamic walking is a series of techniques and exercises for improving posture, gait, and biomechanics while walking, developed by movement therapist Suki Munsell, Ph.D.

Author Maggie Spilner, an editor at Prevention magazine, progressed from agoraphobia (fear of open spaces), which prevented her from walking farther than around the block, to becoming an avid walker who has walked extensively in five countries. "I consider walking to be both my therapy and my proving ground," she says now. Spilner's style is warm and chatty, as if you're joining her for a walk and friendly conversation. She relates personal stories; describes walks she has taken; offers sound, expert-based advice; and illustrates points with anecdotes. Most of all, she wants you to enjoy walking. "I like to think of walking as an art form and of every walk as a painting-in-progress," she writes. "Enjoy the landscape!" --Joan Price ... Read more

It is a well written, informative, interesting read that will guide one to injury free walking for health, fitness & weight loss.
I have begun the Dynamic Walking program described fully in the book and am quite happy with the progress being made.

I recommend this as the first book to read about walking and suggest that it may then become the only book needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best read and advice around!
I have been an advid walker for many years. When I started walking 12 years ago. I needed to find a form of exercise that I could do consistently and would drop my cholesterol and blood sugars to an acceptable level.I found Maggie Spilner's newsletter on line way back then and found it to be one of the most valuable sources of encouragement and factual information on all aspects of wslking! In fact, I kicked my walking up a notch and formed a walking team who has competed in long distance walking relays (125-140 miles) and have done several chartiable walks and 1/2 and full marathons. This book has been my source of information for years to help inspire and encourage the newest of walker and all the way up to the competitive levels.I have bought several copies and needed to find more to give out at a city wide walking program seminar in my home town.I came to amazon to find the books and I will purchase more!I have been fortunate through our joint walking adventures Maggie and I have become friends and she was my choice to kick off my walking program here is Lake Havasu City, AZ.She is the best and I will continue to provide this book to others and use it as my constant source of valuable information, ideas that really work and enocuragement that changes lives!Oh, by the way my cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure has the been the best for many years now and it is all do to walking! So get on your feet and walk and go buy this book! You will not regret it!Maggie, go girl!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT WALKING BOOK - A must read!!!
This is an excellent walking book because it is so informative and motivational! It provides oodles of information about what shoes to wear, what gear to wear, winterize your walking program, how to walk off your weight, a routine for the road, how to prepare for a 5-K or a marathon, and dynamic walking routines...and everything else you need to know.I highly recommend this book to the beginner or advanced walker. This book has inspired me to walk three (3) 5Ks in the past four months and I now walk on a daily basis!Just buy it and read -- you'll like it! =-)

5-0 out of 5 stars "Above all, do not lose your desire to walk"
I have enjoyed Maggie Spilner's writings for many years and it's great to find her walking wisdom packed into one book! I especially recommend this book if your inner sloth needs to be reminded (as mine does) to get out and walk-- Every Day!

Maggie writes, "Walking supports health in every sense--physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. It enriches and balances your life. And it just plain makes you feel good."
She is the world's best walking buddy and sprinkles every page with practical --and fun--walking tips, guaranteed to get your inner sloth off the couch!

On a personal note, I want to add that there is a sign at the top of a hill where I walk that says: "Above all, do not lose your desire to walk." I have long been curious about the source of that quote, and, today, I found it:

"Above all, do not lose your desire to walk: every day I walk myself into a state of well-being and walk away from every illness; I have walked myself into my best thoughts, and I know of no thought so burdensome that one cannot walk away from it. . . Thus if one just keeps on walking, everything will be alright."
--Søren Kierkegaard, a prolific Danish writer, letter to Jette (1847)

Maggie's passion for walking is contageous -- reading her book will help assure that you never lose your desire to walk!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good read
This book is a good read. Two others that were better for me from a walking program perspective are:"The 90-Day Fitness Walking Program" by Mark Fenton (GREAT walking program for the couch potato beginner - starts w/ 10 minutes a day and gradually works up to 30 minutes a day - also not an information overload for a beginner) and "Walking Magazine The Complete Guide To Walking: for Health, Fitness, and Weight Loss" by Mark Fenton (this is the one i'm using now - great walking program schedule and tons of very good info on keeping variety in your fitness routine). If you can afford them, get all three. (I also like "The Sprited Walker" by who I forget, for motivation.)If not, start w/ the "The 90-Day Fitness Walking Program" by Mark Fenton and maybe this Prevention one to get you additionally fired up. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Walking with God
What a wonderful book! The pictures were fabulous, the quality was tremendous and the words could not be improved.

5-0 out of 5 stars Walking with God in America
A great book for calming down! One photograph ist better than the other. Everyone should buy this book (or use it as a gift), who wants to get a feeling (again) for God's wonderful creations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful in every way
Ken Duncan is a master photographer, obviously. Each and every image is perfectly executed from a technical standpoint, but more than that, he seems to find imaginative ways to capture scenes that might otherwise be tranquil and pleasant, and turns them into stunning works of art. Book quality is good too, but you buy this kind of book for the photographic art, and the quality of that art in these pages is flawless and inspiring.
