Description:
Sport is becoming increasingly important in contemporary society and has grown into a multi-billion dollar business. This paper analyzes improvements in performance in one particular sport, speed-skating, and compares the results with theories used to describe or characterize innovations in a commercial industrial environment. The Henderson and Clark architectural methodology is particularly suited to speed skating because improvements in performance in the sport are the result of a combination of the skater's ability, the equipment used and other 'environmental' factors. The klapskate, skinsuit, artificial ice and indoor rinks can all be identified as components and factors having a quantifiable effect in the 'market'. Because of their full penetration into the market, they can be categorized as 'dominant designs', referring to the concept introduced by Abernathy and Utterback. Based on statistical analyses of world records, we distinguished four innovation sub-processes that were additive to a long-term improvement process. The analysis shows that there is still considerable potential for improvement in performance levels in speed skating through innovation. ... Read more

Dasclu was born in the city of Braov, and first trained as a figure skater before changing to speed skating. She debuted at the 1987 World Junior Championships, where she finished seventh. The following year she finished ninth, but was later disqualified along with her team mate Cerasela Hordobetiu, making it impossible for her to make the 1988 Winter Olympics at Calgary. She returned to the international scene in 1991, and finished sixth in the 1000 meter during the 1992 Winter Olympics, the best Romanian Olympic speed skating finish of all time. In the 1994 World Allround Speed Skating Championships in Butte, Montana she won a bronze medal. In the 1994 Winter Olympics she finished eighth in two events, the 1500 meter and the 3000 meter. She continued to compete through the 1990s, with numerous top ten finishes, such as a seventh place finish in the Women's European Championships in 1996, and sixth the following year in the same competition. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Oleg Georgievich Goncharenko (Russian: ) (18 August 1931 16 December 1986), Distinguished Master of Sports of the USSR, was the first male Soviet speed skater to become World Allround Champion. Born in Kharkiv, Ukraine, Oleg Goncharenko made his international debut in 1953 and promptly became World Allround Champion. He would win two more World Allround Championships after that, as well as two European Allround Championships. In 1958, he actually managed to win the "triple", becoming World, European, and Soviet Allround Champion. At the 1956 Winter Olympics of Cortina d'Ampezzo, Goncharenko won bronze on the 5,000 m and on the 10,000 m. He also participated in the 5,000 m at the 1960 Winter Olympics of Squaw Valley, but finished only sixth. Both at home at abroad, Goncharenko was unusually popular for many years, even long after he had retired from speed skating. After winning his first World Championship in 1953 in Helsinki, he received dozens of telegrams in his hotel room there from all over the Soviet Union and from abroad. One of those telegrams he kept until the end of his life because it was particularly dear to him. It was a short message from the legendary Norwegian speed skater Oscar Mathisen, reading "Congratulations. Oscar Mathisen." written just one year before Mathisen's death. Goncharenko's achievements also prompted two cities, Denver and Oslo, to name him an honorary citizen. He also was awarded the Order of Lenin. Goncharenko retired from speed skating in 1962. He died in 1986, at the age of 55, after a painful illness. An overview of medals won by Goncharenko at important championships he...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=12939416 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great accomplishmentin the realm ofpersonal narrative.
Full Circle was a powerful work of signifigance.Deeply emotional, the book transcends Jansen's extraordinary battle as a parable of every athlete's struggle for personal developement.McCallum weaves an enduringtale that athlete, sports nut, or soccer mom can internalize to betterunderstand the common struggle manifested by sports.More eloquent eventhan Shaq Attaq, Full circle is an accomplishment of aesthetics and moralcomprehension. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars the book is very simple, and no color photographs!
I have to say that this book is interesting when it comes to the story of dan jansen, but the book should be smaller because it only contains 32 pages overall. I also have to say that the book lacks pictures, and many of them whether they be in color or in plain black and white. I was surprised when I read this just recently. The people who have read this book and who expected alot from it really are shocked just as myself. I really do not recommend this book at all, and the price is really not worth it...the price of this book ...should be less and should be smaller and in paperback.
I found out about dan jansen when they did this small documentary on him on Nbc. What did I expect from this book?
I wanted to find out about his other competitions besides the ones he had Olympic wise. For example, I wanted to hear more about his view and competitive spirit when he competed at the world championships, and his view opinion of the records that he has set and past champions, plus more pictures of him winning other meets (in speed skating). I feel that so much is focused and emphasized on this issue that he never made it in the Olympics. In the end he won the gold, and that is good, but i expected more information but said in a positive light.
I do not recommend this book at all. Why? too big. to expensive, and very few photos. Which book do i recommend to you? Bonnie Blair's book about speed skating-a very colorful book. I like speedskating, it reminds me of in line skating. ... Read more

Product Description

I honestly don't know what battles I'm going to face next, only that I have the spirit and the will to face anything and fight for my sport and for what I believe is right. I'll give 110 percent and still dig down deeper for more.

Apolo Anton Ohno won both a gold and a silver medal at the 2002 Olympic Games and became an instant hero. But his Olympic victory represents just one moment of his incredible, and continuing journey.

From an early age, his father, Yuki, recognized Apolo's natural abilities and made it his mission to help his son live up to his potential. But getting Apolo to follow through on his opportunities wasn't always easy. Like many kids, Apolo struggled to balance his energetic and fiercely competitive nature with his desire for independence and freedom.

And even as he succeeded on the ice, he felt the loneliness that comes with being at the top. Amid the pain, the fear, the uncertainty, Apolo asked himself again and again, Why am I doing this? And the answer came to him: He truly loved to skate. So with laser-sharp focus he pursued his number-one goal: to become a great athlete.

From his personal struggles to his unwavering commitment and ambition, Apolo Anton Ohno is a true example of courage. He has battled his personal demons, toppled physical barriers, and clawed his way to the top -- but even now he does not rest. Always, he looks within himself to hear his strongest critic, to face his fiercest competitor. And always, he continues to strive to be the best -- not just for his team, not just for his country -- but also for himself. And that is what makes Apolo Anton Ohno a true champion. This is his story. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A JourneyThe Autobiography of Apolo Anton Ohno
The book was in good condition. However, I was disappointed that there was a personal note made by the original owner and this information was not noted in the book description/condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to all young adults
The book A Journey is inspirational to everyone that tries their hardest and loves the sport or other thing that you are trying to achieve. This book shows use the hardship of growing up and how we can trust our family for our problems. The thought of trying harder to be a success is always a part of all lives and should never be forgoten. This book will always be insiring and must be read by young and old.

5-0 out of 5 stars Apolo Anton Ohno
This is a great story about Apolo and he writes the book so that you are able to feel like your are on the ice with him on every win and fall. You will really enjoy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Apolo sets another record -- this time for a great book
Apolo Anton Ohno is a great speedskater . . . and after reading the book I find that he has a pretty good potential for a writer too. After watching him in the 2002 Winter Olympics, I was intrigued with his story. This gives me something elso to build off of as well. He sets a good example for kids because he is a true good sport -- always with a "That's the sport. What happens happens" attitude. A great read.

5-0 out of 5 stars a rare & satisfying memoir
Spare & lean, this young man tells his story with aplomb & humor. Nancy Ann Richardson has not tampered with his way of expressing himself, allowing Apolo Anton Ohno to shine on through.

A JOURNEY is as much a biography of a modern, unassuming hero as it is a tribute to a father's job well done.

A must-read for anyone with a hunger for excellence, & a clue about self-awareness. A splendid read in which we catch glimpses of how one person, with many strikes against him, found something to pull him out of a typical city-bound boyhood, out of the terrible teens, out of obscurity to be the best at what he does.

Apolo Anton Ohno can also add storyteller/author to his accomplishments. Highly recommended. ... Read more
