1-0 out of 5 stars Advanced?
I was looking for a book on advanced techniques -this is NOT the book. She covers roller hockey, speed skating and other topics very briefly. The book is misnamed...........should read "In Line skating Activities".....

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
Advanced? Are you kidding? This book spends a lot of time about covering a broad range of topics - but none in depth.I was looking for a good book on techniques -- well this is NOT the one.It is very superfiscial and not worth buying.I found some "beginners" books with more info!

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting reading, but broad rather than deep.
This book covers fairly diverse inline areas- speed, hockey, fitness, etc and as a result does not delve too deeply into any one area.If you wish to pursue any one aspect of skating, I'd recommend finding something more specialised. For example, the two areas that I specifically wish to pursue, double push and stair riding, are not covered at all.I find it especially puzzling that stair riding could be missing from a book with this title.

Still, as broad skating book, it's quite interesting and does have some good stuff on stroke technique.

5-0 out of 5 stars verey good book
good book it tells you the basics and more. i loved it cause i love to in-line skate if you dont now after you read it you will...

Ramp tricks—skate moves made on, over, or around wood ramps, cement bowls, and half-pipes—are a key, albeit challenging, component of skateboarding. Beginning with basic moves, including stalls, grinds, and slides, skaters gradually learn the particular positioning and balance needed to perform more advanced tricks such as flips and airs. 5-0 out of 5 stars Finally,a REAL History of Skateboarding
Along with Jocko Weyland's "The Answer is Never," I would highly recommend this book as a great reference for the history of all things Skateboard. The comprehensive history isn't overshadowed by narrow histories (i.e. Dogtown's story), nor personalities (i.e. Tony Hawk as the definitive spokesman), nor stereotypes as it examines the evolution of the skateboard from its start in the 60s as a Sidewalk Surfer toy, through wavering bouts of popularity and decline, to the billion dollar industry it is today. The development of polyurethane wheels, the evolution of deck graphics, the magazines that facilitated its publicity, the rise of the pro skater, and everything in between to give skaters and non-skaters alike something to really appreciate about skateboarding.

Hopefully, author Michael Brooke considers updating the book to incorporate the latest epoch.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of info and some nice pics
Bought for nephew who is a skateboard nut. He loved the glossy pictures. Also lots of info in there about the history.

4-0 out of 5 stars Got my 12 year old to READ
This book is definitely designed for the younger reader. I liked the graphical layout and many sidebars which is ideal for a reader like my son who has the attention span of a gnat unless it has anything to do with skateboarding. For this reason, I ordered this book for him.

Initially, when he got it for xmas he put it aside then rediscovered it this month and couldnt put it down. That for me is a good thing and while i have read the negative reviews on this book regarding inaccuracies etc. I think this title is a good start for a novice skateboarder who should learn the history of a sport he loves.

While this review is totally based on the reader and not the content, i think its important for parents to know that this book works for reluctant readers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be a staple in every skater's house
Very interesting historical view on skating. Reads more like a magazine, (no wonder he started one) but in a good way. We are presented with articles basically, from key skaters throughout time. My only gripe is that he hasn't done a new edition, but I really can't complain about this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Checked the facts.... and loved it!
I was more than a little skeptical when I started reading this one, but found it very enlightening for a "non-skater with a skater husband".I was even more shocked to find out my husband corresponds regularly with the author! I felt this was a very honest, fact-filled book which made it easy for even a laywoman to understand. :)

This book is an awesome read as well as some of the other publications that Michael's company has out there! My hubby is a big stickler for details and even he was impressed, which takes a lot. Being almost-40 (but would never admit it) sports nuts, we both enjoyed this one! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Grinding It Out
When I decided to learn street skateboarding I was in a dilemma many skaters will identify with, I wanted to start at the top with some spectacular flip tricks and rail tricks that would have my friends jaws a-drop.But soon enough I realized that skating is an art of slow, small steps, and you have to give yourself room to reverse, always an escape hatch.Evan Goodfellow's introduction to flat world curb tricks was just what the doctor ordered.

I've never seen Goodfellow in person, but the clips I saw convinced me he knew what he was talking about.I started on page one and never really looked back.Funny to think of pro Evan posing for the photo set where he just ollies up a curb over and over again, must be like child's play to him.Soon enough he's onto switch stances and the "half cab noseslide," one of the most surprising of the curb tricks he outlines. On the wax debate, Goodfellow places himself firmly on the pro-wax team, even going so far as to suggest we abolish skate parks in favor of imitation city curbs and lots and call them our parks.

You have to hand it to the photographer too. They certainly don't skimp on photos unlike some of the other so called intros to skateboarding. The photographer, Tadashi Yamaoda, prints his slides in a clever greyscale system so that the deep background of each picture, the city skyline and so on, appears only in a fog of light gray, and the important details of the foreground are rendered in sharp black clarity.Very useful.A disclaimer at the beginning of the book says to wear safety equipment while skateboarding, but neither Evan nor any of his fellow models doing the tricks in the book look like they're wearing any gear, maybe a jockstrap possibly?Oh well, we get the picture, it's a sport that takes balls and talent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
I've seen the guy skate before, both in California and up in Canada, and have been blown away by the stuff he's been able to pull off.He lays his book out very well, showing the beginner, and the want-to-be-pro alike, exactly how to pull the best tricks off for themselves. Most instructional skating books are useless, but this one is actually very valuable, which is the first one like it that I've seen anywhere. You won't be disappointed in getting this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
This book is the best I've read. The trick photos are cool and show me exactly how to do them.I wish he wrote books on surfing too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super informative
This book really gave me some great tips on learning new curb tricks. I found it to be really informative and well put together. I like the fact that the author is a skateboarder himself and can therefore offer valuable instruction from experience. I would recommend this book to any skateboarder looking to take their skating to the next level.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is awesome!
Finally, someone has written a book about skateboarding that can actually help you learn tricks. The photo sequences and step by step instructions are really helpful and the way the book is organized makes it really easy to learn how to improve your skateboarding. I would recommend this book for any skaters who are looking for some totally useful advice from a guy who has the skills to back up what he is saying. Evan Goodfellow knows skating! Check out the book for yourself and read what a pro skater has to say about the fastest way to learn grinds and slides. ... Read more

Product Description
Heads up, collectors and enthusiasts! Rhyn Noll has put together a detailed look at the evolution of skateboarding that starts in the early twentieth century--with rollerskates, 2" x 4" boards, and some improvisation. Catch the concrete wave through the decades, as skateboarding developed into a popular pastime, a competitive sport, and a unique culture all its own. As skating continues to evolve and gain popularity, it's no wonder that the boards of yesterday are in growing demand on today's collector's market. This incredible book combines 693 color photos of decks, wheels, trucks, and other gear that illustrate the sport's dramatic changes in design and graphics; photos of famous riders in action over seven decades; a huge list of skateparks in the USA; and a useful glossary to help the newcomer get a handle on skateboard lingo. Full pricing information is provided. This book is a required reference for skateboarders, past and present, an excellent resource for collectors, and a fascinating look at an evolving popular culture! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars great starter book
Skateboard Retrospective by rhyn noll is filled with lots of wonderful pictures showing skateboard decks/completes. The antique, vintage, & old school skateboard pictures are simply fantastic! The pictures helped me formulate a plan, then execute a vintage skateboard purchase strategy using this book. My hardcore sidewalk surfer days were 1973-87, on the hills of Univ Calif Berkeley, and flatlands of Palo Alto, Ca. Obviously the vintage section of the book was my favorite!!. I actively buy and use collector books as a guide due to an ebay addiction :-)I have a pretty good idea as to what is a good collector guide book and what is not. Thus, I recommend Skateboard Retrospective for skateboard collectors or anyone interested in general skateboarding history. I am not suggesting this as the historical skateboarding bible. It is interesting reading and the pictures fabulous!! Oh, this book got me back into sidewalk surfing again! Yep, in my suit/tie, bald and fat. Started, 2001 & am going strong as long as I don't fall!!
I can be seen on Sand Hill Rd, the venture capital location of the world... Guess a skateboarder never really grows up!

1-0 out of 5 stars A misinformation guide
The selective history of skateboarding thrown into a blender and set for puree. While there's some good historical action photos, and neat collectible skateboards, this book is so full of misinformation and jumbled facts that I don't know what to take for the truth. For example it says that Danny Way was an early pioneer of the air in the 70's.Danny was instrumental to takingvert skating to the next level, but not until the late 80's.The book is also merely a tool for the author to promote his own obscure line of skateboards, and for a small group of collectors to inflate the values of their private collections. As proof that the author has not done his homework, mixed in with the "glossary of skateboarding terms" are rollerblading terms! The book best covers the 60's, but after that it just falls apart.I could site more examples, and rant about how bad it is, but you get the point. ... Product Description
The world's leading professional skateboarder and a hero to thousands of Generation Xers, Tony Hawk, relives a lifetime of incredible highs and lows in the sport. Tony Hawk, aka The Birdman, has won more than 60 contests, invented close to 50 new manoeuvres and made skateboarding history at the 1999 International Championships by landing the first ever 900 degree turn. A veteran of some 20 TV commercials for clients such as Gap and Disney, he is one of the leading heroes of modern-day youth culture. Growing up in Serra Mesa, California, Tony was a hyperactive, tantrum-throwing child, whose only outlet was through boarding. Initially mocked for being an unorthodox "circus skater", before long the doubters were learning the tricks he had pioneered. Tony had invented a new style of skateboarding. His life has been a rollercoaster of incredible highs and spectacular crashes. Tony's quest to land the fabled 900 resulted in broken bones and spells of unconsciousness too numerous to mention. A millionaire at the age of 18 in the 1980s on the back of the boom in skateboarding, Tony fell into near destitution almost overnight when the fad died away. However he successfully reinvented himself as an extreme boarder in the 1990s and now owns two multi-million dollar companies, Birdhouse Projects and Hawk Clothing, has just produced the bestselling cult skateboarding movie "The End" and released his own PlayStation game.In "Hawk" Tony goes behind the scenes of competitions, demos and movies and shares the less glamorous demands of being a skateboarder. With brutal honesty he recalls the stories of love, loss, embarrassing 80s clothes and determination that have shaped his life.Despite the many ups and downs of his career, Tony Hawk's dedication has made him a god to generations of skateboarders and countless other Generation Xers. His story is a touching tale of perseverance and determination. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars a personal account, a fun read
I really enjoyed this book. The book flows along easily as Cleo tells the story of the role skateboarding played in his life as he grew up in Florida's Central West Coast.

Skaters new and old alike will enjoy the "historical" photos of earlier days of ramp riding skateparks. The book gives you a real sense of what it was like to be a part of skateboarding while it was evolving during Cleo's career. More importantly, I think many skaters will relate to how skating transformed Cleo's life as an ongoing positive influence. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT SKATEBOARD PLANS!
This book, "How To Build Skateboard Ramps" is great. But the thing is, it's not just about ramp plans. It's about ramp plans, style of ramps, different combination of ramps, stuff to use, things that work best, and stuff like repairing. This book is so spacific. Beofore I read this book, I had no clue even how a ramp was built. Now that I read it, I could probably go build a bowl by myself. Even if you don't plan to make a ramp, just reading this is fun and exiting. There are so many cool and unique skate and ramp pictures. Some pictures are just amazing.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY DETAILED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Has very detailed plans for ramps of all sorts. Has ideas on how to combine ramps. Do's and Dont's. And plans for the best halfpipe for your skill level. ... Read more
