5-0 out of 5 stars You Can Take it With You
Richard Taylor has a way of drawing the reader in very quickly for the ride.Once you're seated in a safe place, hold on because there are lots of curves on this dangerous road, and need I say?...slippery when wet!Only Taylor could make a pharmaceutical company's human resource issues this sexy.Adults-only for the sexuality, where the graphic quality of description is magnified to 1000X as a result of chemical neurological enhancement our hero and heroine experience in the course of research and discovery. If you're like me and have more Victorian sensibilities, read only with one eye.

For me, the climax comes at the end of the ride.A great read that will make you think about the nature of the God, the universe, humanity and perhaps volunteering for a clinical trial.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun reincarnation thriller
John Kinkaid is hit hard with a sense of déjà vu the first time he sees Vanessa. She's moving gracefully through the easels set up at a charity auction, a Porsche among Toyotas, he thinks. She has some paintings on display there herself: she goes around photographing the faces of strangers--her house is crawling with the pictures--and she paints the ones that speak to her. John's face, when she first catches sight of it, not only speaks to her, it practically shouts: her sense of déjà vu is just as strong as his. John is a billionaire venture capitalist and the CEO of GenePharm, which--speaking of déjà vu--has recently got the FDA's approval to begin human testing on a new memory drug, ClearThought. Animal testing has shown that ClearThought can significantly increase one's mental clarity, if only temporarily. Its potential, should human trials go well, is staggering. John and Vanessa's relationship takes off at a gallop, but problems at work interrupt: an employee's gone off the deep end after sampling the drug. He's convinced that ClearThought has made him remember past lives, and that he and John--and for that matter Vanessa--have shared a long and complicated history.

Richard Taylor's Stones Skipping on Water is a fun read. There aren't really any big surprises in the plot, but it's written well and it's suspenseful enough to hold one's interest. I really enjoyed the take-charge aspect of John's character: he's got money, he's got corporate power, and he's decisive in what seems to be a very realistic way. It's fascinating to watch his behavior in work situations in the same way that watching Donald Trump on The Apprentice is fascinating.

My only real complaint about the book is that the descriptions of the past lives some of the characters experienced go on too long. (On a lesser note, I found it surprising that John would so quickly place so much trust in a stranger he finds via a mall bulletin board.) In the end, I don't think the story will stick with me in the way that the similarly-themed movie Dead Again has (a great, great movie): the plot of Stones Skipping on Water doesn't pack enough surprises for that. But I thoroughly enjoyed the book while reading it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Past Emotions in the Present Tense
You don't have to believe in reincarnation to enjoy this sexy thriller novel. From start to finish it's an exciting ride through a world of what if. The main characters are people you can relate to even though you may not have their luxury lifestyle -- past or present. Who among us wouldn't want to know about our past lives if there was ClearThought -- the drug which, by human error, makes it possible for two passionate lovers and one demented scientist to experience their past emotions in the present tense? Stones Skipping on Water is the perfect definition of what life is about. Richard Taylor's novel is a fast, fun, fantastical tale that will keep you thinking long after the cover is closed. Read it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Smart and Sexy
Open this book and hang on tight - it grabs you and doesn't let go. This is a smart, sexy film noir, very much for adults and lots of fun. If you're looking for something new and exciting to read, you just found it

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!

Wealthy entrepreneur John Kincaide develops a memory enhancement drug called ClearThought. One of his employee's, Gordon Bischoff, takes a huge amount of the drug and claims he has been able to see the past lives he has led. When he sees John with his new girlfriend, Vanessa, he accuses John of murdering them in a previous life. Gordon is determined to not only get revenge for his death, but win back Vanessa's heart.

John doesn't believe any of this, but he realizes how dangerous Bischoff is and vows to protect Vanessa. He's convinced Bischoff took an overdose of the drug and is now having a mental breakdown. Vanessa is not quite as sure as John. She begins to wonder if Bischoff could be telling the truth and wants to test the drug out for herself. John sees the danger in this, but can he stop her before it's too late?

This is a story of reincarnation, paranormal, romance, mystery and suspense. As I read the book, I became totally caught up in the story. Sometimes a book comes along and sticks with you long after you've read the last page, this is that book for me. The suspense and mystery is woven throughout the entire storyline and keeps readers completely captivated until the shocking ending. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Gift for Mom and Grandmom
I got this book for my mother because she is now 63 and she was thumbing through it in the bookstore, laughing at parts, and saying "so true, so true." I bought it for her. She then ordered one for her sister and one for her mother, who in turn ordered if for friends. They say it is humorous, true, and makes them think about setting up their lives better. After my mother read this, she took up music again, which had been on the back burner for years.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Journey of Authenticity
What I like about this memoir is Paul's open heart without justifying himself to his readers. He remains true to his pastor's concern for his people which I knew for many years---accepting, honest and examining the Scriptures for the truth of God's grace in our often messy lives. Paul presents a challenge to the present day church to accept others with the same grace that God's accepts us and without a laundry list of what are "acceptable" and "unacceptable" sins. His reflections are thought provoking without preaching. He offers hope to many who sit in the pews with hidden, dark secrets that threaten to destroy their lives. He writes with humility and integrity of the journey and his ability to continually learn and grow from his life experiences.I recommend this book to anyone who struggles within themselves for any reason and feels no one would understand. Paul's courage to relate his specific struggle will encourage anyone with a heart open to the goodness of God.

4-0 out of 5 stars Why are they so offended?
First of all, this is a very well written book. Paul is a superb communicator. You won't be disappointed.

This collection of short essays doesn't have to be read in order, and the topics make for interesting discussion.Surely, we all know that life doesn't fit into nice, neat little boxes... and, "Skipping Stones" will prompt friends and small groups in discussions and debates. If you want to be challenged to go deeper this book is a great resource.

What I have found so interesting is where aspects of the book strike offense (even anger) in some people. We're taught to "be who we are" ... a nice sounding phrase. There's truth to that, of course, in the sense that people with certain skills and talents should feel required to bring the best of themselves to society.BUT, deny ourselves? Subdue passions? Wrestle with our character?

The reality is that we override ourselves all the time... in our relationships, our jobs....

So, Paul is a determined "wrestler." Why the angry response from some people? I suspect it's because this book tells us allot about ourselves. I think part of the answer is in a haunting line in the book where Paul says he spent too many years comforting the afflicted, and too little time afflicting the comfortable.

You can't grow in a comfort zone.

5-0 out of 5 stars I could not stop reading...
This book is from an authentic man.I'm a slow reader and I found myself staying up at night just to read the next chapter. This is a story of struggle, of honesty, of courage, and thankfully, Paul's story is still in process and unfolding. If you have ever wondered if its okay to wrestle, struggle, scratch and claw your way on a faith journey, than this books will be sweet to your soul.Paul Barnes is a humble man which adds validity to his words as well as the fact that he didn't pack it in with his faith and say, "this is what I feel."Instead, continues to stand firm slugging it out due to his deeply devoted heart to CHrist.Every pastor must read this book and buy one for their entire staff.Anyone who has an inkling on what a redemptive community could be will resonate with Paul's words.Every Christian who has struggled with their sexuality will find an oasis of wisdom by reading this book.Believe me, you will not be sorry you purchased this book----you will never be the same after reading it.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Telling of a Fall and Grace
Paul Barnes writes an account of his ongoing spiritual journey expressing a panorama of emotions including loneliness, disappointment, frustration, and sometimes glimpses of hope.He makes it clear no easy answers or conclusions have been attempted.Rather, he muses over his life, his story, and many of the events surrounding his making national news when his personal life became public.

Barnes, a former pastor who left the ministry, doesn't identify himself as a homosexual, but rather one who struggles with homosexuality. It seems he makes a distinction between the person who embraces homosexuality as a lifestyle and the person battling their tendencies. The tension of Barnes' life comes to light when he writes, "My faith which has revolutionized my life, has also been the source of some incredible depths of despair.Yet that faith has been my lifeline.Without God sustaining me... I would have given up a long time ago."

I appreciated Barnes' interaction with the term `evangelical'.He writes, "Sometimes, a label can be nothing more than a wall to hide behind for people who don't want to really invest some brain cells in thinking through challenging issues."That's probably true for any label. He goes on to say, "Thus we have over 9,000 different Christian denominations... all claiming to have the inside track on the truth of God."I'm not sure this is a fair statement. If we interview 20 pastors, asking if their church has an exclusive track on the truth of God how many would answer `yes'?I'd suggest most would say Scripture has the inside track and their church is doing the best it can to follow.

Barnes claims the church today has attached itself to social and political issues it has no business being associated with.He didn't list the specific ones, but I'm guessing... gay-rights, abortion, and the definition of marriage. If the Bible speaks to those things and if a person has taken the time to think through those issues, including developing convictions then should they speak and vote and act in accordance?

Reflecting on the reaction to his disclosure Barnes seems perplexed, "... as long as simply thinking about evil things is all we do, the Christian community takes a hands-off approach.Once we act on those thoughts however, a line is crossed and some kind of action needs to be taken against the individual."I'd suggest this is not only true in a church discipline setting, but in the public arena as well.As long as someone only thinks of robbing a bank no action is taken against them.

I personally identified strongly with chapter 7 - The Dream Killer.Barnes writes of his experience at a legalistic college where rules overshadowed a relationship with God.The result was a wedge, a roadblock, in his spiritual life.He writes, "A healthy life of faith is not found in just avoiding certain behaviors. When we try to live our life on that basis, I maintain that it sucks the very life of God out of us."Amen.

Barnes considers spiritual maturity and writes, "For some reason we have assumed and taught that spiritual maturity is to be equated with `increasingly getting our act together.'" This is a tough one.We certainly set people up for frustration and failure if we teach moralistic piety apart from the source of the strength to overcome battles. That is, Jesus never simply hammers home the idea of `fruit, results, obedience', but instead He tells us to abide, remain, and cling to Him.And only then suggests that if we love Him we will keep His commandments.

Barnes eventually comes back around to ask, "How do I reconcile my calling into ministry... with the fact that I have a major struggle which, from an evangelical perspective, should immediately disqualify me for ministry?"I'd suggest evangelicals don't claim mere struggle disqualifies anyone. In fact, thoughts and desires didn't even disqualify Jesus.Hebrews 4 says, "...we do not have a high priest [Jesus] who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are--yet was without sin."Martin Luther has said, "I cannot prevent birds from flying over my head, but I can keep them from building a nest under my hat."

In summary, Barnes' compiles a journey of faith in the messiness of life. After making a case that all sin is equal in God's eyes, and acknowledging that we all struggle with something, I wish he would have given some practical suggestions based on his own battle for overcoming sin.Maybe things like, `Don't go it alone', `Remember God's deliverance in the past', `Believe that God rewards those who seek Him', `Be thankful'.Barnes' ends one of his chapters with a passage from Psalm 94, which I pray continues to be reflective of his journey, "When I said, `My foot is slipping, your love, O Lord, supported me.When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul.'

5-0 out of 5 stars Honest
The brutal honesty in his journey brought me to tears but also challenged me to think deeper about how I live my life and how I interact with Christ. I appreciated him stepping outside of the box of evangelical Christianity and offering a real, candid conversation. ... Read more

Product Description
Skipping Rocks at High Tide is not an autobiography in the traditional sense. However, it does offer insight into Mr. Lorenzo’s soul and mind at various moments in his life. The 75 poems he selected for his first book are his attempts at understanding everything from love to heartache, from fatherhood to competition, and from current events to death and dying. These writings are extremely personal to Mr. Lorenzo as they involve important, life-altering events that helped to shape his current views and beliefs. They were written while Mr. Lorenzo was losing the innocence of his childhood and discovering the potential of his adult life. The title of this work indicates the infinite possibilities that can result from simply doing day-to-day activities. Mr. Lorenzo hopes that the readers of this work will take away their own lessons, applied from their own experiences. ... Read more
