Product Description
Deborah Joy Corey's long awaited second novel explores a point of Maine so far east that it is almost an island and so desolate that the inhabitants must find something stronger than themselves to make them stay.

Available only in Core 6 Series.Amazon.com Review
The titular skating pond of Deborah Joy Corey's long-awaited second novel is the site of a terrible accident that reveals the cracks in 14-year-old Elizabeth's troubled family life. The daughter of an aloof painter and a frustrated Canadian beauty with an untapped gift for figure skating, Elizabeth spends winter afternoons watching her mother practice spins near their home in an isolated New England fishing village. When a stray hockey puck hits her mother in the forehead, Elizabeth once again finds herself on the sidelines. This time, however, she becomes a silent witness to the inexorable process by which a disfiguring facial injury not only destroys her parents' marriage but also robs her mother of sanity and life itself.

Elizabeth survives the loss of her family only to enter a passionate and increasingly hostile relationship with an older man who is not unlike her self-absorbed artist father. Her inability to free herself from Frederick's icy grip forms the central drama of this Gothic tale and ultimately leads her to make error in judgment with reverberations almost as disastrous as the accident on the pond. Elizabeth's moving account of her parents' break-up is reminiscent of Corey's first novel, Losing Eddie, in which a nameless nine-year-old records, with chilling dispassion, the collapse of her own family. In the latter half of The Skating Pond, however, Elizabeth's voice suffers from a surfeit of romanticizing imagery, obscuring her motivations and those of other characters in a haze of purple prose. Corey remains a dazzling stylist but this novel lacks the precision that made Losing Eddie such an emotional tour de force. --Lisa Alward, Amazon.ca ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Blow Me Away!
We were already on our way to an impromptu wknd @ the beach and I had to stop @ the library for a few novels.. I don't know why I chose this one.The book jacket synopsis really drew me in I guess.

This is a very awesome novel, loved the characters and remained unabashedly concerned with what would happen to them! The author's descriptive narrative of the New England coastline was mesmerising as was the story itself.

I am definitely going to read it again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful language, beautiful images
In Portland, Maine, last week with 4 friends from college days who wanted 'to shop,' I ducked into the nearest bookstore, bought this book, settled into a worn old leather chair, and nearly finished the book by the time my friends returned to find me. Thank god for the salvation of a good book!
It's difficult for authors to write about sex. Most of the time, they come off sounding either like a Victorian maiden or a sly pornographer. But Deborah Joy Corey has written a book with a goodly amount of sexual interaction - and not a single line comes across as crass, voyeuristic, prurient, or sophomoric. It's absolutely beautiful writing.
The central story is Elizabeth's, a girl with parents both frustrated by their own demons. Tragedy is something they can't cope with, and soon Elizabeth find herself living alone and going rapidly downhill in a small town on the coast of Maine. She falls into the arms or clutches (depends on your viewpoint) of a much older man, an architect from New York. He's running from his own demons and finds a kind of warped salvation in his relationship with Elizabeth - but he, too leaves her.
I won't say more - but there's redemption, temptation, salvation - and a quiet love overriding everything in this lovely book.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Skating Pond review
I enjoyed this book a lot once I got into it.I found the beginning a little slow and seemed not to be going anywhere, but I stuck with it and slowly a love story of kind developed. It was a strange love story between a teenage girl and a man certainly old enough to be her father. The book is well worth reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars GENTLE METAPHORS STRONG CHARACTERS AND STORY
The metaphors in this novel are truly uncountable - but every one is aptly drawn.Combine that with a cast of characters that are so compelling and real, involved in a story with which any reader should be able to relate, and there are plenty of reasons why this novel should be widely read and lauded. The quote on the book from Elizabeth Hardwick, characterizing THE SKATING POND as `a love story' might lead some potential readers to write it off as romantic fluff - to do so would be to do this novel a great injustice. This is simply incredible writing.

Corey's main character, Elizabeth, is thrust into adulthood at an early age through a double tragedy - the death of her mother and subsequent abandonment by her father.Over the course of twelve years, we see Elizabeth go through the emotional ups and downs that would easily fill most people's lifetimes.Through it all - through her yearnings for more than a life in a remote Maine coastal village can offer her - she remains questioning. She questions the life led by those around her, and she questions herself - what does she really want out of life; what can she expect from it; what does she know of love, and what does she want from it?These are things that each of us must work out for ourselves, in our own way - and Corey's lovely writing allows us inside Elizabeth's mind and heart as she walks (and sometimes stumbles, as do we all) through life.

Corey has a way of revealing the humanity and goodness that resides (I believe) in all people - even the characters in her story that are somewhat less than likable come across sympathetically, at least in some ways. The life-lessons that her central character absorbs here are never presented as set-in-stone or rigid - as another reviewed astutely pointed out, it's all about the choices we make. Those are the ones we have to live with.

I wonder if Corey set out to write such an ambitious novel, or if it `just happened' to turn out that way.Whatever her original intentions, she has written an absorbing, rewarding and entertaining novel - highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do Yourself a favor and read this book!!
I don't know where this little gem of a book was hiding, but I certainly am glad that I found it. I was immediately drawn to the main character, Elizabeth and found myself rooting for her in her desire for a family life and then later on through her trials with love and loss.To me this book is about the choices we make and how everything that happens to us leaves it's mark on us somehow. ... THIS BOOK ARRIVED IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, HOWEVER, THERE IS LIMITED CONTENT. PHOTOS ARE NICE, BUT NOT ANYTHING DIFFERENT THAN CAN BE SEEN IN THE SKATING MAGAZINES. THE SELECTION OF FUTURE SKATING "STARS" FEATURED IS A RATHER ONE-SIDED VIEW.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful snapshot
I wish their was a classy revue like this one of Figure Skating stars available at the end of each season. This is an interesting and very beautifully photographed snapshot in time at the end of the 06/07 season. It is interesting to note who has evolved and become the current favorites since this book was published.Especially, Yuna Kim who has gone on to hold most of the important titles and records in the women's division. She has demonstrated a level of technique and artistry that would put her on the cover of any new edition as we cruise into the 2010 Olympic season. ... Product Description
"A poignant, revealing look at a life we might have imagined differently. . . . Her story will give inspiration to anyone striving toward a seemingly impossible dream."
--Booklist

"America's Sweetheart" Dorothy Hamill grew up on the ice, working toward the dream she was to accomplish by age nineteen: winning Olympic gold in figure skating. But life was not the picture of perfection it appeared to be. Dorothy faced a painful inner struggle with depression that followed her from the time she was a young girl into adulthood. Months away from home to train and compete took a toll, yet little reprieve could be found in the tumultuous and fragile relationship she had with her parents.

Dorothy went on to marry the man of her dreams, only to have the partnership end in heartache and a tragedy that almost pushed her to the breaking point. When a second failed marriage tried and tested Dorothy yet again, she found a remarkable strength in what she did have--her greatest love, daughter Alexandra.

In this deeply moving and honest memoir, Dorothy opens up for the first time about love, family, courage, and what it means to truly win--both on and off the ice.

3-0 out of 5 stars Skating Around the Description
The price of this book was phenominal, and it also arrived in a timely manner. However, the description of the condition of the book did not match what we received. The description said "some edge wear".There was no edgewear, but there were some other things that should have been included in the description. There was a big crease, writing inside, a grease stain, presumably from a food spill, and a black marker mark on the side of the book.Again, the price was awesome, but regardless, the condition of the book did not match what we received.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great-amazing book!
Like Dorothy, I feel that figure skating has given me a place in life. I completely understand the joy and freedom that being on the ice gives, there is not anything comparable to it!Hearing of her life, struggles and joys, make me appreciate her even that much more as a skater and as a person!I could hardly put this book down!I highly recommend this book to anyone- a tender story of a very talented and beautiful person. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Courageous Women Who Refuse Defeat in Mind and Body
Skating Forward is not only a delight to read; it is also an uplifting and inspirational book as well. Author Joanne Vassallo Jamrosz has collected tales from sixteen amazing young women who used their electrifying feats on ice to overcome great physical and psychological setbacks. Their courage to persevere through personal tragedies will inspire readers to do likewise.

There is sixteen-year-old Molly who knows her father has Muscular Dystrophy. Molly has a 50/50 chance of developing this disorder in late adolescence and adulthood. MD results in a degeneration of the muscles in the lower arms and legs, and the muscles of the neck and diaphragm.

After visits to orthopedists and podiatrists resulting in months of frustration, Amanda White finally receives a diagnosis for the crippling pains in her wrists, knees, and feet. She must battle rheumatoid arthritis.

Shae Andrews is a teen in love with skating. She would like to be in the Olympics before going on to study mechanical engineering. But Shae is deaf. Choreographed movements on ice to music looms as a mountainous obstacle facing her.

Twenty-year-old Heather Johnson is a true advocate for people with disabilities. Heather has had unpredictable epileptic seizures ever since the sixth grade. Her doctor tells her she must not skate without a helmet. How can she enter competition?

Because her brother Alex has autism, fifteen-year-old Belle Junge puts on her first pair of ice skates so she can interact with him. Belle feels that because her brother is unusual she must do her best to help him advocate for himself.

Devastated by the death of a beloved social studies teacher, Teri Harte wants to use her dexterity on ice to help memorialize her former teacher friend. Both had shared a love for teddy bears.

Carolyn Bongirno skates at a local Florida rink. Carolyn and her husband want to use fertility drugs to help her become pregnant. A complete physical shows a tumor in her breast. In addition, cancer has spread to Carolyn's lymphatic system.

After losing fifteen pounds in one week while drinking volumes of water and trying to eat, skater Courtney Ann Caldwell is on a collision course with death. After several misdiagnoses, eventually, doctors uncover her problem. Courtney has Type-1 Diabetes.

Skating Forward reveals that Although Laura Whitney never remembered a tick bite, nevertheless her eventual diagnosis shows dreaded Lyme disease. In addition to severe headaches, this bacterial infection affects her cognitive ability.

Eighteen-year-old Kara Mietlicki is diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma--a pernicious form of cancer. Faced with surgery and ongoing chemotherapy, Kara wants to keep skating like Scott Hamilton, while undergoing cancer treatment.

At a skating rink on Coney Island, Tatyana first puts on ice skates purchased by her father. She was five-years-old then. Now, years later, her loving father is in the final stages of kidney failure. "He can no longer hear me talking to him." Tatyana is overcome with deep sorrow.

Allegedly suffering from asthma, Victoria Hecht's coach recommends a physical to determine if she has the stamina for figure skating. A thorough physical work-up shows Victoria has two congenital heart defects, not asthma.

Erica Archambault overcomes many physical problems and illnesses including meningitis but continues to skate. None of these hardships are as devastating to Erica as when her father leaves their Colorado home and refuses to return.

Skater Kylie Gleason visits an orphanage while in Romania. There, a profoundly saddened young child deeply affects her. Now she wonders whether skating should always be the main part of her life.

Because ice dancer Emily Samuelson falls during a dance routine, in order to avoid slashing her head, her partner must land heavily on Emily's hand. The accident requires surgery to repair a severed tendon in Emily's middle finger.

Fourteen-year-old Eliana Roth suffers from Tourette Syndrome except when ice skating. Tourette's causes embarrassing involuntary body movements, throat sounds, and even the unintentional use of obscene words or gestures.

All of these courageous young women you will meet in Skating Forward. There are many books on the market about persons who must deal with staggering life problems. But this book is unique because ALL of the women described are skating heroines who face situations which could easily crush most of us.

For sure, this is not a woman's book; nor is it just a series of memoirs about ice skating. Skating Forward will leave all readers--female and male--in awe because it is one single tale of the stubbornness and flexibility of the human spirit. It will help people that are seeking a beam of light at the end of what could be a darkened tunnel of deep despair.

Author Joanne Vassallo Jamrosz's book would be a fascinating read for high school and college students to study and discuss--particularly youth who feel life has treated them unjustly. The women in Skating Forward amend their lives and their spirits against all odds. You will not forget them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superguides: Ice Skating
I loved this book! I think that every skater should read this book! I fell in love with skating though this book. Of course, I liked skating before I read this book, but this book showed me that skating was for me!

5-0 out of 5 stars Techniques and Advanced Skills
Skating on Ice began hundreds of years ago as a way to get from one place to another. The focus of ice skating today is definately more for entertainment, however natural ice rinks form in countries with exceptionally cold winter weather and you can skate outdoors for exercise.

In Toronto and Canada, large areas are flooded during the winter months to make rinks and skating is one of the most popular sports in Canada now. Some of the first World Championships were held in outdoor rinks and for me, ice skating outdoors is ideal. I dream of skating down a frozen lake and did skate as a child on a frozen lake once.

My holiday dreams for the winter are now focusing on a place with an outdoor rink. I say all this to say: Introducing a child to ice skating can give them much pleasure later in life. My parents would drop my brother and I off at the ice rink and we never wanted to leave. My brother taught me to skate backwards which I was very proud of!

This is a sport the whole family can enjoy if parents can find the time to take their children for this fun activity. In this wonderful introduction to skating, children will learn what they will need to be comfortable and warm. I didn't realize an ice-dance blade was different from a free-skating blade. Now, that is information I could have used as a child.

A Warming up section shows children how to stretch to prevent injuries. If you remember your first steps onto the ice, the next section will be very valuable. What happens if your child falls in the middle of the ice rink? If no one is nearby...the picture they show is fine, but if skaters are whizzing by...I would tell children to keep their fingers folded in as they try to get back up. Sometimes you can get knocked back over just as you are getting up, has happened. ;>

This section shows children how to step out onto the ice, how to fall safely, do dips and how to scull. Skating forwards is the basics, but they go into Crossovers, the snowplow, stopping by using a T-stop and a hockey stop. Skating backwards and not falling is exhilirating!

The step-by-step intructions are all illustrated by real skaters. How to place your weight and on what leg is very important for balance. Did you know that edges are the foundation of ice skating? This is what allows skaters to skate curves and circles. Once the forward and backward skating has been mastered, you can move on to turns and then to jumping on ice. I would recommend ice skating classes for sure, however this book will allow the skater to read all about what they are learning in class. It seems to me it would be difficult to learn to do jumps from a book and I don't recommend it.

They do say: "Seek professional coaching before you attempt any of the moves." A glossary gives insight into the language of ice skating. You can look up a sit spin or a waltz hold or even a bunny hop. All I have to say is...why am I here writing a review when I could be skating. ;> I have my eye on a 3-way convertible skate by Hypno (Fila Manufacturer) that has ice blades, inline skates and a boot that detaches. It looks perfect for outdoor sports when you want to put on your shoes and then go outside. You just snap on the wheels or ice blades. If anyone has them, write me and tell me if they are comfortable.

Enjoy this book, it is so informative and will really get you or your children out on the ice! There is nothing cuter than "mini-skaters" with their parents out on the ice. My dad used to skate with us as children. I do miss all those fun times, but that must be why we have children so we can relive our own childhood through the eyes of a child. This is an exciting book on a sport so many love.

I highly recommend this book to any child or adult who wants to find out the basics and all the extras of skating.

Product Description
Given the popularity of all types of skating--on the ice, on the boards, and on the streets--why isn't roller skating an Olympic event? Author David H. Lewis sought out people involved in every aspect of the sport in an attempt to answer this question. He talked to competition judges and coaches, rink operators and rink organists, and scores of skaters from around the world. The answers he found--and there are many--are likely to anger and astound readers in turn. Those answers, along with a wealth of information on the world of roller skating past, present and future, are detailed Whether you skate for the love of it, or have higher aspirations in the world on wheels, "Roller Skating for Gold" is fascinating and illuminating reading. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Confirming what skaters already know.
"Why isn't roller skating in the Olympics?" This question has bothered skaters and skating fans for decades. Occasionally it seems that the sport will finally get its day in the sun, but inevitably it retreats to the status quo. Skaters toil on wheels, unknown, while their counterparts on ice score millions of dollars in commercial contracts.

David Lewis recounts the story of roller skating's years of attempting to join the Olympic games, and points out some rather scathing reasons why it hasn't happened yet. Substantial amounts of blame can be placed with the IOC, but even more blame is laid at the feet of the USA Roller Skating organization, portrayed here as inept and out of touch with what needs to be done to push skating forward.

In some cases Lewis' ideas are a bit out of touch themselves -- does he really think that fans would swarm to watch roller skaters compete in school figures or American Dance? Only skaters enjoy watching those events, and not even many of them! But his heart is in the right place, and he clearly has affection for the sport.

Roller Skating for Gold is a good read, but be aware that there are tons of typos and a few factual errors, and the price is extremely high for such a slim book. The high price is the major reason I could only give the book three stars. Were it half the price, it would be a 5 (or at least 4 1/2) star book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not deep; doesn't always flow through concepts
I'm new to inline skating and I'm looking for a book to get me started. Myexperience with ice skating and skiing is helping me. I'm looking for abook to, "take me to the next level."

This is a good book, butit isn't that.

There are some good pictures that show how to do certainmaneuvers in time lapse. That helps. However, sometimes illustrationsrather than pictures are the most effective means to get a concept acrossto the reader.

The written descriptions on how to do certain things, suchas a Y-stop, are good, but not always thorough enough. It would help if theauthor would build up to certain tasks.

For example, the author mightteach certain points about turning, which could then be used to form thefoundation of a Y-stop.

Learning is about developing a foundation andbuilding on that foundation. Too much in this book was independent ofeverything else I need to learn. I just didn't come away feeling that I hadmoved to the next level because of this book.

Don't get me wrong, Ilearned quite a bit. However, this book wasn't as thorough as I had hoped.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for beginner skaters
If you are enthusiastic about inline skating, you probably want to read everything about it you can get your hands on.I have read 3 or 4 books so far.I have learned at least something good-to-know from each one -- this one included. It's cheap enough -- order it and read it! ... Read more

Product Description
A phenomenally unusual three-way murder mystery. With a murder at its heart, Roberto Bolaño’s The Skating Rink is, among otherthings, a crime novel. Murder seems to have exerted a fascination for the endlessly talented Bolaño, who in his last interview, according to TheObserver, “declared, in all apparent seriousness, that what he would most liketo have been was a homicide detective.”

Set in the seaside town of Z, north of Barcelona, The Skating Rink is toldin short, suspenseful chapters by three male narrators, and revolves around abeautiful figure skating champion, Nuria Martí. A ruined mansion, knife-wieldingwomen, political corruption, sex, and jealousy all appear in this atmosphericchronicle of a single summer season in a seaside town, with its vacationers, businessmen, immigrants, bureaucrats, social workers, and drifters. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I was a terrified beginner until I found it
It really helped me a lot. Bill's drawings are clear and lots of fun as well. A nice piece of work there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quirky, but contains great information!
Yes, this book is full of cartoons and feels totally hippie, but it offers really useful information that other books don't.Nealy explains the physics behind certain skating postures and tells you how speed impacts various movements.Interesting! His enthusiasm and humor are great, once you get used to the non-standard "font" (handwriting). You could read and re-read this book and glean more each time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Inline Skating Review
William Nealy's book is a tough read because he's chosen to present basic instruction with hard-to-sort-out and confusing drawings, hand-sketched caricatures of actual skaters. While his overall comments on basic inline skill sets may be helpful, the myriad cartoon drawings aren't, often times appearing indecipherable.Of course an intermediate-level reader most likely will recognize what's going on, but for a beginner seeking underlying fundamentals--good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars Inline!: Beginning to Intermediate Inline Skating

Fun Book!!
Haven't had time to start learning, but it was fun to go through & read...

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
An excellent publication. Diagrams are well thought out, giving all the steps required to complete a move along a timeline. The writing style and use of humour in the text and illustrations makes reading and learning fun, and the author really captures the inner thoughts of a beginning skater as he prepares to execute a move, making the reader feel comfortable with trying them. I keep the book with me and review a page or two now before I skate to hone my skills. Thanks for an excellent publication! ... Read more
