Product Description
Little Squire was born in an Irish meadow on an early spring day. The colt was beautifully formed with strong, straight legs and a pretty head. But due to his small size, it was unlikely he would be more than a nice child’s riding pony. By the following spring, the yearling was separated from his mother and turned out to pasture with the other weanlings. Little Squire wasn’t happy to be away from his dam so he charged the high stone wall and cleared it easily. Little Squire had just shown an astonishing side of himself that would eventually bring him greatness.

Over time, the young horse traded hands, crossed an ocean, and ended up on the American show-jumping circuit. That was when he met another diminutive Irish immigrant, Mickey Walsh.

The two were inseparable until, at Mickey’s request, Little Squire was retired at the top of his game, and while he was still sound. He went out in a blaze of glory, though, ending his last performance with Mickey by jumping a six-foot-two fence — rider-less — in front of a packed arena. During the war-torn 30s, Little Squire had given people something to cheer about. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars If you have never ridden a horse before, this book is for you!
So this book would be fine if you are going to do a horseless horse project for 4h or something like that, but if you are interested in trying to determine a carrier path for your western prospects like I was, don't waste your money.I was hoping they would talk about what qualities it takes to compete so I could figure out if my colts would fit that market, not just what they do at shows. This book was more descriptive than instructive.Judging by the simplistic nature in which they "explained" the events I currently compete in, I felt like everything in it could have been determined by commonsense and observation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
This book was in perfect condition when i bought it, arrived when it was supposed to arrive, and inspired me beyond belief! Anyone who is serious about show jumping must read this book! Anyone who's ever had heartbreaks and letdowns in the equestrian world must read this book! Anyone who's thought they couldn't accomplish their dreams due to a lack of funding must read this book! Even people who like the thought of riding and competing horses must read this book...in other words, this is a must read for everyone!! Wonderfully written, great pictures, and very heart warming: No Hurdle to High is a gem of a book about an amazing woman who beats the odds because of her dedication and love for the sport and for the horses. Five out of five stars!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars A Mother's Subjective Point of View
This was clearly written from a mother's subjective point of view. While it included many of Margie's accomplishments, it did little to describe how she actually overcame obstacles in her path toward professional Grand Prix riding. How did she obtain exclusive rights to horses from Hidden Creek's stables? How did she manage entry and travel fees before she was a recognized rider? How did her size help or hinder her riding? One reviewer's statement that this was written from a "mother's, third person objective point of view" is comical. No mother can write about a child, of whom they are so obviously proud, objectively. This was clearly from a mother's subjective point of view. This could certainly be considered a "delightful diversion" by any pre-teen.Serious riders should stick with the Chronicle of the Horse for factual "objective" information. And I,too, question why the Kelton Family's review was left twice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Read
If you have a love and passion for horses and are especially interested in the wonderful world of Show Jumping at an Olympic and Grand Prix level, this is the book for you.I loved reading about Margie's childhood and how she was so determined to work to the top and work is exactly what she did.I remember getting the opportunity to watch Margie compete many years ago and at that time I knew she was a rider I wanted to mimic and look up to, after reading this book, it is a solid confirmation that she is truly someone to pattern yourself after, both in and out of the saddle. What a great person.

3-0 out of 5 stars Read the Chronicle instead
Mom, who is rightfully proud of her daughter, is a retired schoolteacher, and boy does it show. To say the book was written on a third grade reading level, which another reviewer has claimed, is completely accurate. The corny, quoted dialogue that supposedly takes place between mother and daughter reads like an elementary school play: "How did the grand prix go?" "Very well, thank you. I got first, second and fourth." "That's wonderful. How do you feel about the Olympic outcome?" This would be a delightful read for a preteen that aspires to be a top rider, but it's merit ends there. If you want to follow Margie's career, but a subscription to the Chronicle of the Horse instead.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for adults
This would be interesting reading for a young rider. I expected explanations and descriptions about how Margie achieved her successes.Instead, it is more like her mother's walk down Memory Lane.It might be fine for a young fan of Margie's, but it is not for a mature, serious rider.I also do not understand why the Kelso family review was repeated and included twice in averaging the rating. ...
