5-0 out of 5 stars Fine Instructional Basketball Shooting Book!
Ted St. Martin of Jacksonville, Florida describes in his book the scientific analysis of the basic shots employed in basketball games. This manual provides many illustrations demonstrating the proper techniques for basketball shooting.
The book also provides a general descriptive history of the basketball shooting career of Ted. He has established numerous basketball exhibition shooting world records. He has traveled all around the United States for a long time performing basketball free throw shooting demonstrations. At various times in the past Ted has held world records for 24-hour marathon free throw shooting, five minute and ten minute free throw speed shooting, etc. Ted is the current Guinness world record holder for sinking 5,221 consecutive free throws and he has sunk a record 48 free throws in a one minute time span. These are mind boggling feats!
Of all basketall shots Ted St. Martin is most qualified to espouse upon the free throw shot. This book contains much informative information about the premises and principles of sinking this essential shot.
There has never been a greater basketball shooter in history than Ted St. Martin. The reader can profit greatly from his exquisitely unparalleled expertise.
I am a close friend of Ted St. Martin and have shot in contests against him and I have also performed an exhibition show with him. I make special appearances performing my own one-person basketball exhibition shooting shows. Even though I am similar to Ted St. Martin in the sense that I possess a very rare basketball shooting talent in basketball history, I have profited from Ted's analysis of my own shooting technique.

3-0 out of 5 stars false information
At first this book was extremely intriguing, but after attempting to comphrend with this book it was humanly impossible. You could read this book as much as a million times but it will not give you any ideas or info on how to shoot a basketball properly and other supremely important information. Choose wisely, this book is nonsense. I reccomend tom amberry's free throw book it gives you mainly all the secrets.

5-0 out of 5 stars accurate, easy to understand
Anyone from a child to an adult can learn how to accurately shoot a free throw from this book. The visuals are very helpful, lets you actualy see how you should hold the ball.Your stand and the follow through are veryimportant which Mr. St.Martin stresses time & time again. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Quick fix remedy type of book
This book contains many good points on taking good pictures and the content is very well classified.
The main reservation on this book, though, is the feeling of lack of 'substance'. The reason is that instead of starting the chapter with a quick overview the principle of photography/camera (aperture, speed, lighting), it starts immediately with composition/subject issue by giving one suggestion after the other. In the end, the author superficially covers camera basics (aperture/speed) in a very confusing manner. This sudden return to basics, seems somewhat strange since he has not touched them at all during the first 95% of the book.
A reader with prior knowledge of camera basics wouldn't have any problem, however, one without a good understanding of camera basics would gradually become very confused and feels trapped in the end.
If you have already have some photography basics, you could get some useful ideas from reading this one. Otherwise, get a more authorative, very well written book for your starting point: Upton's Photography, then maybe read this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great stuff
All I can say is that Wignall's book is just great. It's easy for beginners, yet it adds up tothe whole package. It shows you classic tricks (and some new ideas) in a very nice and easy to understand way. It's both great to learn from, and a joy to look in. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for those who love their bird-dogs!
This was a great purchase, and I am grateful for someone who suggested this book in a review of another of Charles Fergus's books, "A Hunter's Book of Days".It relates this hunter's first year with his Springer Spaniel, from finding a suitable litter of field-bred pups, training, and several hunts of game-birds including grouse, pheasants, and ducks.A very enlightening, moving, and entertaining read (I had to laugh or exclaim aloud at various points.)I already purchased another as a gift. This edition has a new Preface written in 2006; the original publication was 1991.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book

5-0 out of 5 stars A Rough Shooting Dog
If you have owned a Springer, enhance your enjoyment & memories with this wonderful read. A great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A thoughtful book on the emotions of hunting
I have read other books by this author. Most of them are autobiographical (mixed with practical hints about dog training and bird hunting). All are well written. This one is the best, I think. That relationship with his springer transcends the usual mush. The dog obviously was a paragon, the dog of a lifetime.
The reciprocity between the two gives the lie to those who claim that dogs have learned how to con humans into doing their wont.
The book is well worth reading. It will enlighten and grab you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book that is about more then just training ESS
I read this book to learn something about training English Springer Spaniels.I walked away with a deeper reflection on myself. The Author shares his experiences during the time when he acquired his first Springer. He also shared with you things that where happening in his life (like the passing of his father) and the deeper understanding of nature that blossomed during that same period.A wonderful book and a great read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Drive By Shootings
Excellent book, I saw this guy on a news program and had to have the book. He is one with the city for sure.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest photography books on New York
As you can see from the other reviews, David Bradford is a one of a kind, true artist who deserves all the respect he gets. I had the pleasure of boarding his cab back in 1997 which led me to make a short film on him for my NYU film school project. David has access to some of the most incredible scenes of New York as he drives through the city year round and at all hours with his camera. His photographs catch the subtle changes in light, weather, and emotion of the city. And he sees it from the street level behind the steering wheel. I am honored to be his friend and this book to me is as exciting as the work Andreas Feininger did of New York city during the 30's and 40's.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best photo books i've ever bought!
a book of photographs (and some prose) done by a NY taxi cab driver. all the photos were shot with a point and shoot camera, while he was driving his cab.

a great example of how a body of work is equal to more than the sum of the parts. in other words, the individual images are not necessarily masterpieces, but when you put them all together, the body of work could definitely be exhibited in a gallery. goes to show you that to be a successful artist, a concise body of work is more important then successful individual images alone.

also, this book is a great example of taking one's circumstances and surroundings and creating something artistic from them. there's room for creativity everywhere, especially for photographic creativity.

and in it, the author transcends what might be an ordinary job into something extraordinary. like a bumble-bee buzzing throughout the city, Braford in his cab with camera in hand shows us that in the wake of the events of 9/11/2001 (in fact, the World Trade Center buildings are in many of his shots), NYC is a city full of vitality, life, and soul.

as a published photographer myself, and someone who has not yet spent much time in New York, i really appreciate this book. it's one man's view of the city, yes. but he has such a great vantage point as part of the livelyhood of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bradford takes you there...
I have never been to the Big Apple, though for as long as I remember, I have always wanted to go there. David Bradford (a taxi-cab driver) captured NYC from his cab window so well that it really "took me there". I got a feel of NYC while I flipped through the pages of his book. His idea to do this is not only inspirational, but brilliant as well. This book makes a perfect coffee table book- highly recommended to anyone who loves New York!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I was so excited to get this book when they showed the story on 60 Minutes. The photographs were all taken with a Yashica T4 point and shoot camera, (the point and shoot of choice for most pro photographers)! The pictures are all in black and white too. The pictures are the pulse of New York City from the viewpoint of a New York Cabbie. I love this concept. I love that this man has used a wonderful point and shoot camera (now discontinued...shame on you, Yashica!), and how he photographs the city while driving. He also photographs the passengers (great idea!!). The text is fantastic. It lets you really understand where he is coming from when he took the pictures. What makes this book winderful is this combination of text and photography, and that it is a new struggling artist who makes his living by driving a cab in New York City, a very rough job indeed. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars This book fills a big gap in my aviation library.
Overall, this book is a fairly well written book, aside from numerous typographical and grammatical errors (doesn't anyone proofread manuscripts anymore?), as well as one photo in the color section that's printed twice. The author could have said more about the location of some of the photos--i.e., where the photo was taken, and more information on where the various units were based. 2-0 out of 5 stars Great movie, but what sort of example is this for a budding screenwriter?
If you look at the first excerpt page, T.S. Eliot's last name is misspelled.Hollywood supposedly demands that every spec script be free of misspelled words and bad grammar, yet I've seen shooting scripts with "He could care less" instead of "He couldn't care less" (not dialogue, mind you) and frequent misspellings.Much like the literary agent industry, professionalism is demanded (agent name, book proposal, nice paper, SASE), but often not reciprocated (e.g., they'll send you a photocopied form letter [Dear Author . . .]).

What we need to see are published versions of original speculation scripts.Shane Black's first release of "Lethal Weapon" would be more beneficial a read than these shooting scripts.

Sorry, got off on a rant. It's not that these shooting scripts aren't worth reading for new screenwriters, but there's a market out there for actual spec script versions. If your spec has as many SUPERs in it as this shooting script, Hollywood might throw your stuff in the bin . . . unless you're established, of course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent! Like you're watching the movie all over again.
It's a great book. Everything is in exact detail as the movie. As I read, I picture the scene in the movie and I feel like I'm watching the movie all over again. It was written word for word, scene by scene. It even includes still photos and a full cast description of each character. It was everything I thought it would be. It was definitely worth the wait since ordering this book before it was even published. ... Read more

Product Description
Winner of four Academy Awards, including Best Director (Steven Soderburgh), Best Supporting Actor (Benicio Del Toro), Adapted Screenplay, and Editing. Winner of the Golden Globe Award for Best Screenplay.

In the Newmarket Shooting Script® format, the only tie-in to the new film by Steven Soderbergh (Erin Brockovich, Out of Sight), a contemporary thriller set in the world of drug trafficking starring an ensemble cast that includes Michael Douglas, Benicio Del Toro, Dennis Quaid, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Albert Finney, and Don Cheadle—from USA Films.

From a border policeman in Mexico caught in a web of corruption, to the conservative judge appointed by the President as the new anti-drug czar, to undercover DEA agents fighting a drug cartel, to the wife of a drug baron and the judge's drug-addicted teenage daughter, Traffic evokes the high stakes and high risks of the drug trade, as seen through a series of interrelated stories, some of which are highly personal and some of which are filled with intrigue and danger.

The Newmarket book includes the complete shooting script, an introduction in the form of a conversation between Steven Soderbergh and Stephen Gaghan written especially for this edition, 30 b/w film stills, and the complete credits. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great education tool
This edition of the screenplay to "Traffic" is great for a number of reasons. One of which is that they have kept the edition in its shooting draft format, instead of doctoring it to match the version that ended up in the movie theaters. So some scenes are not arranged in the chronology that they appear in the finished film, which is a good insight into the filmmakers' process in putting the film together in the editing room.Another reason is the actual physical formatting of the text, which they have left alone in the standard script format with the courier new font. The conversation between the writer and the director in the introduction of the book reveals how the project originated and their reaction to critics' responses to the film.My only minor complaint is the fact that they did not publish the earlier draft of the screenplay; they have omitted the scenes that did not make it into the shooting draft. For educational purposes it would have been better had they included the omitted scenes, and simply note that they were taken out of the shooting draft (preferably with some explanation as to why they did so, but mere inclusion would have sufficed).

Over all this is a great edition but I would wait to get the early draft which will inevitably become available on the Internet in the months to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very realistic!
The movie looked more like a docudrama or a special report than a fictitious thriller. Traffic is very realistic. Soderbergh, the cast and the film crew did an excellent job. To have the shooting script is another advantage and for film aficionados and film students this screenplay is a "Must" in their collection and valuable resource material. Another powerful thriller that I've recently come across and I very much recommend as the scenes come alive from the written page with one scene after the other like in a movie, is the very realistic and edgy thriller THE CONSULTANT by Alec Donzi. ... Product Description
The official screenplay book tie-in to the hit thriller from Warner Bros., starring Academy Award® winner George Clooney, Tom Wilkinson, Tilda Swinton, and Sydney Pollack, and written and directed by Tony Gilroy (The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy).

Michael Clayton (George Clooney) is an in-house "fixer" at one of the largest corporate law firms in New York. A former criminal prosecutor, Clayton takes care of Kenner, Bach & Ledeen's dirtiest work at the behest of the firm's co-founder Marty Bach (Sydney Pollack). Though burned out and hardly content with his job, his divorce, a failed business venture, and mounting debt have left Clayton inextricably tied to the firm. At the agrichemical company U/North, meanwhile, the career of in-house counsel Karen Crowder (Tilda Swinton) rests on the multimillion-dollar settlement of a class action suit that Clayton's firm is leading to a seemingly successful conclusion. But when Kenner Bach's brilliant and guilt-ridden attorney Arthur Edens (Tom Wilkinson) sabotages the U/North case, Clayton faces the biggest challenge of his career and his life.

The Newmarket Shooting Script® book includes the complete script, an exclusive foreword by William Goldman, a Q&A with writer/director Tony Gilroy, a color photo section, and the complete cast and crew credits. ... Read more

A Shooting Man's Creed, the field memoirs of Sir Joseph Nickerson, is now widely appreciated as a classic sourcebook in the literature of shooting. This new edition includes a revised introduction by his daughter, Rosie Whitaker. A Shooting Man's Creed was first published in 1989 shortly before Sir Joseph Nickerson's death. He had finally put down his knowledge and expertise about shooting and all that it entails for countryside conservation so that others could benefit from the lessons he had learned. With a foreword by the Duke of Westminster, this book makes use of Sir Joseph Nickerson's unique collection of personal records covering more than 60 years and provides advice on every aspect of the increasingly popular sport of wing shooting. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Gentlman's Guide to Wing Shooting
I enjoy wing-shooting. Not everyone, of course, sees it the same way. Some see it as a birthright to roam the free ranges of earlier American wilderness life. Some see it aspagan ritual. Some see it as a landholder's duty from ancient European traditions of aristocracy.

I am somewhere in the eclectic, and I like to think MODERN but classically liberal, middle.Like Joseph Nickerson, I see it as a sport to be shared, an act of preservation on behalf of rare and lovely species, which are the prize of wing shooters.

Like it or not, no one else but the shooter is going to preserve these wonderful birds. In the real world of today, general natural preservation has no hope of sustaining these delicate beings. Free ranging in the meantime is a bygone dream which will never again be seen in human history on Earth, barring a complete natural renovation of the earth.

Having considered various styles and approaches to the matter, I am concluded that raising the birds and harvesting them on licensed private land holdings is the only affordable and effective way to preserve the natural beauty of the species, and at the same time avoid the inherent "Tragedy of the Commons." This book is not a polemic on the issues, but it provides data to think it all over.

The Shooting Man's Creed is written by an English gentleman. We cannot all be an English gentleman, but we can choose to be gentlemen just the same.I make that choice for myself and choose to model my shooting style and taste on the European model.Accordingly, I side with the private land approach, coupled with an insistence that the birds should only be harvested for the superior food they provide and for the sake of the flock and species.

I just don't feel any need to apologize for making a gourmet meal from a well raised, corn-fed wild pheasant or grouse in lieu of roasting a Purdue family factory fed and slaughtered chicken or turkey.

This book is not a definitive statement of any of this, but I believe it sets the right tone, if the reader can avoid an overly literal reading and use the general sensibilities of Sir Nickerson as a start to think about the broader issues.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting view of British Shooting, but not hunting
Nickerson writes as though he is speaking to fellow aristocrat, offering advice in pursuing the sport of shooting. The vast majority of the shooting in this book involves driven shoots where gentlemen stand in their assigned position (with an assitant to load the guns) while "beaters" move through the woods in front of the guns driving the birds over them. For the North American reader much of this appears grossly unsportsmanlike.Advice such as "it is wise to pack your vehicle....the night before unless you have a man whom you can trust to do this for you" is found regularly. The shooter replete with a staff of servants is assumed. Also special considerations should you invite members of the royal family are outlined. The is an interesting look at the British upperclass and does include sound shooting advice but is not really a hunting book.In fairness, it never claims to be.Afterall, the title is "A SHOOTING Man's Creed" ... An all-star collection of wise, sarcastic and hilarious quotes.

Shooting from the Lip is full of the off-the-cuff comments that keep millions of fans not only watching games, but also avidly reading the sports pages. They're fresh, they're frank, and they're all about hockey. For example:

  • You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take. (Center Wayne Gretzky)
  • I was kind of hoping it would straighten it out. (Center Rod Brind'Amour, after suffering his fourth broken nose)
  • I'm not dirty, just aggressive. Fighter pilots have machine guns. I have only my mask and stick. (Goalie Gerry Cheevers)
  • I don't want to tell you half truths, unless they're completely accurate. (Coach Alain Vigneault).

There are 300-plus quotes representing 50 years of hockey, further enlivened with colorful graphics and photographs of the featured players, coaches and other personalities.

The book is organized into a wide range of topics, including attitude, blowouts, coaching and fans, hockey hair, injuries and feuds, penalties and goons, taking shots, and winning and losing.

Product Description
From the award-winning creative team behind Best Picture Oscar®-winner A Beautiful Mind, comes this new film, starring Russell Crowe and Renée Zellweger, inspired by the life of legendary boxer Jim Braddock who defeated heavyweight champ Max Baer in a 15-round fight in 1935.

Producer Brian Grazer, director Ron Howard and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman—all Oscar® winners for 2001's A Beautiful Mind—are reunited with Oscar®-winner Russell Crowe for Cinderella Man, inspired by the life of legendary athlete Jim Braddock, a once-promising light heavyweight boxer forced into retirement after a string of losses in the ring.

As the nation enters the darkest years of the Great Depression, Braddock accepts a string of dead-end jobs to support his wife, Mae (Renée Zellweger), and their children, while never totally abandoning his dream of boxing again. Thanks to a last-minute cancellation, Braddock finds himself back in the ring against the second-ranked world contender—and to everyone's amazement, wins in the third round. Despite being pounds lighter than his opponents and repeated injuries to his hands, Braddock continues to fight against challengers and win. Carrying on his shoulders the hopes and dreams of the disenfranchised, Braddock, dubbed the "Cinderella Man," faces his toughest challenger in Max Baer (Craig Bierko), the heavyweight champion of the world, renowned for having killed two men in the ring.

Braddock—not so much a great boxer as a great man who boxed—climbed into the ring seeking nothing more than to provide for his wife and children. His commitment to them inspired him to championship, elevating the family man with a simple cause to the level of legend.

The NEWMARKET series is the best in published screenplays because they maintain the original format of the pages from the production script. As any screenwriter knows, the layout and presentation of how a page looks can sometimes be as important as the content.

This is a great book and a great movie. The script itself is very readable, plus it represents a primer on how to write both period detail and boxing scenes. The additional historic and filmmaking information only adds to the experience of the film -- and of reading the script. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Sheriff's Surrender

Gert Dooley is the best shot in town. She came out west after her brother's wife died to help him out with his gunsmith shop. Hiram as stopped talking after his wife's death, and Gert test-fires the guns and does the talking for him. She's known as the best shot in the town.

When the sheriff of Fergus is found dead, the townsfolk vote Ethan Chapman in as interim sheriff until a new sheriff can be elected. Ethan never wanted this job, but he fills in because he can't let the town down.

When the ladies in town discover that the old sheriff had been murdered they go to Gert to teach them how to shoot for protection and they form a Ladies Shooting Club. The men in town want this club disbanded--but then another body is discovered. Ethan turns to Gert and her club to help him find the murderer before he strikes again.

THE SHERIFF'S SURRENDER is the first historical I've read by Ms. Davis, but I am a long time fan of her suspense books. I found THE SHERIFF'S SURRENDER starting out kind of disjointed, in many different points of view, and I got a little confused. But by the time the sheriff was murdered either I'd gotten used to the storytelling method, or the story had tied together some so it wasn't as confusing.

Ethan is a man who loves to serve, but he doesn't like to be in the limelight. He doesn't want to be sheriff, but there is no one else to do it, so he steps up to the plate. I hoped that he would be able to solve the murders and maybe even fall in love in the process. Gert isn't so well developed as a character, but the reader can still identify with her. This is a light, easy read with a fun mystery thrown in to keep the pages turning.

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining 'Western-Crime-Drama-Mystery'
I don't consider The Sheriff's Surrendera romance at all,nor do I consider it a 'Christian' novel just because of the absence of profanity and sex.

However, it was an entertaining read that kept me engaged through the end. I loved the ladies in the story, but most of the men sounded like real sexist jerks, who went ballistic over their females joining the shooting club! The mystery was good, and I never guessed who it was,but I'm one of the world's worst armchair detectives,is why I seldom read mysteries.

Recommended for those who would enjoy a nice 'clean' crime-drama-mystery set in the frontier west.

4-0 out of 5 stars Suspenseful Christian Historical Novel
When Gert Dooley arrives in Fergus, Idaho in the late 1800s to help her pregnant sister-in-law, she arrives to find her brother, Hiram, grieving the deaths of his wife and child. Gert stays to take care of him. She also begins to test the guns Hiram repairs as gunsmith. Years later, she has become an astonishing markswoman.

After the murder of the sheriff, Ethan Chapman is appointed as interim sheriff. Ethan has been friends with Hiram for years and Gert has developed feelings for him. Despite reciprocating feelings, Ethan plans to never marry.

As the danger increases, the women of Fergus vow to learn to protect themselves. They form a shooting club with Gert as its leader. Gert and Ethan band together to protect the town from a murderer - but can they work together without letting their feelings for each other get in the way?

This was a really good story. I found the people of Fergus to be charming and realistic - they had fears and courage; friends and enemies; joys and sorrows; humor and determination. However, much of the book is spent introducing the townsfolk and setting up the mystery, leaving the romance to fall a little flat. I also never felt a connection to Gert. I never felt like we really got to know her. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series and finding out what will happen next in Fergus, Idaho.

4-0 out of 5 stars I Wanna Join the Ladies Shooting Club!
This was such a fun book, and I enjoyed every second I spent reading it!From the front cover and the description, I knew that I would be reading a book along the lines of Mary Connealy or Kelly Eileen Hake, and I was exactly right.I loved the small, almost up-start town, all of the townspeople, and the mystery that lurked through the whole book.I also thought the storyline was very unique as I think this is the first book I've ever read full of a bunch of armed women ready to shoot some lead!I cannot wait to read more about this little town with its strange name (Fergus, Idaho), as well as more about the Ladies Shooting Club!

4-0 out of 5 stars Western with Ladies as the Heroins
An old mining town's sheriff is killed and replaced by one of the ranchers.A serial killer continues to strike causing the women to learn to shoot from Gert, an expert shooter and form a Ladies' Shooting Club which helps out the sheriff.

I enjoyed this book even though it seemed far-fetched.It was an entertaining read with a bit of romance and Christianity tossed in.I liked the subplot of how the women became closer and helped each other as they got to know one another better through the shooting club.

It was a fun read and I think women would enjoy it much more than men.It had a good lesson though--to get to know people and show you care before they die. ... Read more

Product Description

Nearly twenty years ago the Earth was devastated in a catastrophic accident that left the solar system politically unstable.

The wealthy moved to other planets, the poor stayed on a desolate Earth, and crime in its myriad forms spread everywhere.

In the wake of this, the professional bounty hunter became a staple in the interplanetary terrain, snatching elusive criminals for wads of cash.

However, such a lucrative trade calls many into its folds, thus the field became over crowded, much to the chagrin of hapless Spike Spiegel and Jet Black, high class bounty hunters with low class luck.

When a child genius computer hacker and a femme fatale amnesiac join the team things begin to look up for them. But how good can things get when you live in the shadow of a mafia past.

Cowboy Bebop: Shooting Star is an alternate telling of the famous television show that contains all the same intrigue, adventure, action and gritty noir ambiance of it's screen counterpart.

3-0 out of 5 stars A new take on a great series
I absolutely loved the anime of Cowboy Bebop. This book is set in the same universe with the same characters. Their stories, however, have changed. The way we meet Ed, Faye, Ein, and the history of Spike and Jet are different based on the author's take on the characters. Some might not like this, but I like the new twist on their relationships. Plus the author has added a whole new badguy! Since the TV series is over, it is also like getting all new Bebop stories. I haven't read the rest in this manga series so I don't know how they continue, but if you are dying for more Spike and don't mind the alternate reality, I highly recommend the book!

If you don't want the stories to change, consider picking up the Cowboy Bebop series by Hajime Yadate and Yutaka Nanten, ISBN#1931514917, simply called Cowboy Bebop Book 1 etc. These are more like continuing adventures that take place in between what would have been a TV episode.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good- but with flaws
It was a refreshing twist to the Bebop universe. Spike's style was made a little, um, too pushy. He cared too much for his ship. Ed is still Ed, but has a more animeish (is that a word?)look to her (him? not sure about it this time around.)Jet hasn't changed with the new artist, but Faye has turned into a snobby brat. The art is hectic in the fight scenes, but is okay as is. Is worth a look for hardcore Bebop fans, but not for newcomers. See you space cowboy.

1-0 out of 5 stars How do you ruin Cowboy Bebop? This is a big example!
This series is a retelling of Cowboy Bebop supposedly, except for some reason Cain Kuga destroyed the characterization of everyone.Spike is now much lazier than the original, and lacks the laid back yet serious stature he has in the anime, Ed is now a whiny little brat, and Faye is nothing but a brainless (...)The artwork is ugly to look at... no, the character designs are okay, but the action is drawn so odd that it is impossible to tell what is going on.And the stories themselves are very lacking, they do not have the Bebop feeling that the anime does, and devoid of any characterization.Listen to this review:DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY LIKE I DID!I've goofed up so none of you will make the same mistake like me!

2-0 out of 5 stars Kuga just doesn't understand
The good thing is Cain Kuga provides great art for this series. The bad thing is Kuga, as the writer, never grasped the personality or appeal of each character. The subtlety of the anime and the balance of the various personalities aboard the Bobop is lost. The most infuriating is Spike has taken on a whole new personality of stupidity.Instead of a cleverness hidden behind his nonchalant attitude, he has become Bebop's grunt, driven by hunger and little else. There's a reason the manga is being canceled after issue 2.

4-0 out of 5 stars WHAT IF?
The 2 volume Shooting Star storyline by manga writer and artist Cain Kuga uses most of the same characters as the Cowboy Bebop anime series but places them in alternative situations and gives them slightly different origins.

This first volume introduces the entire Cowboy Bebop crew as if the previous anime and manga never existed in 5 stand-alone stories, or "shoots". In the first, Spike and and Jet are hired to find a renegade body double of an organized crime boss. In the second we are introduced to Edward. The third story brings Ein into the picture. In the fourth story the crew are sent to catch The Scorpion, a dangerous Dragon Head general who escaped from the prison planet of Pluto. The last story introduces the always ravishing Faye Valentine as she attempts to steal the Bebop.

I liked these stories. I think the idea of the series was to start afresh without being bogged down by backstory. It worked because none of the characters were scrapped really. It was the same old bebop with subtle differences. They didn't have any of the dark tragedy that to me seemed to plague some of the later Bebop sessions. If you're a fan you'll enjoy these, and if you've never read Bebop before you could start here. I have no idea why the second volume of Shooting Star is not availible here at Amazon. I would highly recommend the Sessions and movie on DVD and the previous manga trilogy that came before Shooting Star. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Smallbore Position Shooters Bible
I am still a fan of the first edition of this book, and I hope reviewer J.Crawford reads that edition because all phases of position rifle shooting are covered.Bill Pullum and Frank Hanenkrat are simply the best resource for competitive position shooters - nothing else comes close to their expertise. They addressed mental training for the shooting sports long before it gained widespread acceptance. This book (and the first edition) are MUST HAVES!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but has flaws
I don't doubt the authors experience, but some of the advice in the book is lacking and/or dubious. For example, the section on what equipment to buy basically says "See what the pro's are using & buy the same", but takes several pages to make a point. I didn't think this good advice at all, what if their equipment is not suitable for me ? How do I determine what suits ME best, the book did not even cover that ! It may be OK for some, but I feel the book is not aimed at my (basic) level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Improve your score dramatically.
After shooting benchrest for four years, I decided to join a regional rifle club which hosts CMP sanctioned service rifle and national rifle matches.

I competed for the first time in September 2005 in the John C. Garand (JCG) Match Course B (200 yards, 50 shots - 20 slow prone, 10 rapid prone, 10 rapid sitting, 10 slow standing). I scored 400 points. I was pleased with my performance considering it was my first competition.

A week before the October 14 match, I heard about this book from other competitors. I decided to buy it on the same day, shipped via UPS Next Day. Customer service was outstanding. UPS delivered the book the following day. I practically read the book cover to cover for the rest of the week.

This is not your typical "how to" book. It clearly outlines the physiological and psychological aspects of the sport, and how to integrate them for optimum performance. I learned more in a week about shooting than I did in eleven years I spent in the US Army. I liked the fact that the contents of the book were easy to understand, and not full of scientific mumbo-jumbo. It was written in a manner than the average Joe could understand.

To make a long story short, I scored 457 after reading this book! See you at Camp Perry.

UPDATE AS OF FEBRUARY 3, 2008

Wow! I can't believe it's been over two years since I wrote the above review. I originally bought the book to help me attain better scores in the John C. Garand match. As it turned out, I stuck with JCG but I also picked up service rifle (AR 15) and match rifle (spacegun) categories. I achieved an Expert classification in service rifle my first season in 2006. Then I switched over to match rifle spacegun in 2007 where I achieved Master classification. However, I have decided to go back to service rifle this 2008 season when it starts in May for the simple fact that I wish to earn leg points and go distinguished. I only have two shooting manuals, and this book is one of which.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
OCTOBER 9, 2008FOLLOW UP OF A FOLLOW UP

After 3 seasons of highpower service rifle, I finally reclassified from and EXPERT to a MASTER. I'm still trying to "leg out" and go Distinguished.

Peace.

4-0 out of 5 stars Need to Bridge Gap
Some of the material covered I have seen nowhere else. The author correctly identifies the all important psychological effects associated with shooting and shooting well. However, there is much more that could be said, with accompanying detail as necessary, on the finer points of shooting.Further development of ideas and techniques for breathing, holds and grips of the rifle, trigger action, and handling recoil consistently are items that need further expansion. It is a good text, however, for an intermediate shooter more is needed.Another very beneficial area would be to have a few more pictures with annotated diagrams addressing the finer points discussed in the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Let me lay it out nice and simple: this is a fantastic book for anyone who wishes to hit the bullseye.I have been shooting everything from pellet guns to high powered rifles for over 20 years and this book still managed to teach me some things that improved my shooting abilities.I made myself a little notebook full of tips that I learned from reading the book and then put those tips into practice at the range.Immediately I could see my scores at 50 feet offhand, 100 yards offhand, and 200 yards offhand getting better.Though it's not about hunting, hunters will also find this book useful as well through the proper firearm control techniques it will teach you.

I know everyone out there thinks they're already a good shot and there's nothing more to learn. After reading this book you too will learn that there are a lot of things that you were probably never taught which will help you to shoot even better than you do now.I highly suggest you read this book if you are serious about the shooting sports.Whether rifle, shotgun, or pistol: you are going to pick up some tips which will make this book easily pay for itself. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Really an Awful Book
This book is not easy to read, not helpful if you are interested in learning how to shoot long distances and fairly infantile in presentation. Moreover, it's predominately a book on varmint hunting. I have nothing against varmint hunting or book about varmint hunting but the title is misleading. I wish I had just thrown the money out the window of my car, it would have been more satisfying.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a guide for better shooting
I was hoping for actual tips with formulas, or how to make formulas to work with large rifles. Not in here. If you are into shooting small caliber high speed ammo for prairie dogs this might be for you. I did not find a section on basic shooting skills.

1-0 out of 5 stars $19.95 wasted- in this economy.
Apart from misinterpreting what I call long range shooting and Mr. Brezny's version, I find the book to be quite amateurish in format, editing and presentation. There are pictures with incorrect captions e.g. page nine purports to be a Ruger and to me looks like a Savage, page 24 shows a Contender in .22 Hornet but apparently is one of the .17 rimfires. Now a .17 rimfire may be a long range rimfire but that was not what led me to buy this book. The book is loaded with pictures of L.P. staring grimly off into the distance but the book would have been better served offering more on long range shooting than a, to me, narcissistic panoply of pictures. I gave up trying to make sense of it all by page 30 or so. In addition, the cover was extraordinarily difficult to see, even with my best scope, at 600 yards and was cause of more than a few misses. Now I realize that a book such as this necessarily entails assessing the authors' opinion but for me, it was "that's all I can stands, 'cause I can't stands no more". Would that I'd have found this in a public library or better yet been paid to read it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well thought out
Brezny has written a simple, easy to follow instruction book. He stays away from the military and law enforcement applications and sticks strictly to hunting. This is a refreshing change from all of the "wannabe" books.

1-0 out of 5 stars Just Terrible
This book is just the worst piece I have ever seen written on this subject. There is no specific information that would educate or prepare someone for long range shooting. The coverage of firearms is just a listing of what guns and cartidges are available from major manufacturers with little offered regarding applicablility. The rest is just a collection of mundane stories...sort of like watching bass fishing on TV.

The author is contradictory from one chapter to the next, bascially wandering from one opinion to another as the book goes on. At one point he suggests the 7mm Remington magnum is a great selection for chuck hunting, after suggesting the 223 Remington and suggesting the 22-250. My favorite quote was "Recently, the 300 Winchester magnum is getting some attention for long range shooting" or maybe ""The scope is the eye of the shooter for long range hunting".

The author opens by ridiculing the opinion of someone who selected the 17 Remington for long chuck shooting, but later goes on to post data for the 17 Mach II and 22 LR cartridges. By the time he was done recommending, he had even included the 30-30 WCF and 50 BMG for long range sport shooting. I'm not trying to me mean. I am sure the author is a nice guy, as are his buddies, services and suppliers he covers in this work, but then I was charged $16 to read this tripe. Was the book inspirational in some way? Yes, it pretty much means I have a chance of publishing my work on hobbyist neurosurgery. ... Read more

Product Description
Ten years after Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed twelve classmates and a teacher, Columbine remains the world's most iconic school shooting.

Columbine: A True Crime Story, a victim, the killers and the nation's search for answers is the first book of investigative journalism to tell the complete story of that day, the far-reaching consequences, and the common denominators among school shooters across the country.

Jeff Kass was one of the first reporters on the scene and has continued to cover the story as a staff writer for Denver's Rocky Mountain News.

He has broken national stories on the shootings such as leaked crime scene photos, and the sealed diversion files of the killers. He has also reported the story extensively for the Boston Globe, Christian Science Monitor, Newsday, and U.S. News & World Report.

The result of ten years of research and exclusive information, the book reaches into fundamental American themes of violence, racism, parenting and policing.

Concluding with the tale of the tattered police investigation and how one of the most controversial victims' families faces down a modern American tragedy as the cameras roll, Columbine: A True Crime Story is a classic in the tradition of In Cold Blood and The Executioner's Song.

Foreword by noted historian Douglas Brinkley, exclusive cover art by renowned artist and cultural commentator Ralph Steadman, and photos from the archives of the Rocky Mountain News, which won the Pulitzer for its Columbine photography. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth a Read but Flawed
I read this book after just finishing David Cullen's Columbine and at its beginning I found myself wondering if the two authors were writing about the same two individuals.Mr. Kass comes upon this story with what appear to be some preconceived biases that are fed by the air of deception that has surrounded the case since the beginning.

Throughout the book he appears to really want to blame the usual suspects, guns, video games, a cliquish high school culture, etc... But he can't quite do it.The evidence to the contrary is too great. He almost glibly attempts to dismiss the symbiotic relationship between the two shooters and Eric Harris' psychopathic personality which was the catalyst and driving force behind the attack. He glosses over the facts that it was Harris who built the bombs and Harris who did most of the shooting. He offers vague descriptions of how Harris and Klebold were bullied but beyond some references by Brooks Brown, offers no substantiation.Kass cannot commit to any real cause of the killer's actions. The psychological causes don't support where he wants to place the blame and neither do the facts.

The victims of the crime receive short shrift in the book; they appear to be nothing more than props in the story, the lone exception being Isaiah Sholes, whose family receives a chapter devoted solely to them. One of the great controversies of the crime, the Cassie Bernall story, does not even rate a mention.

The most bothersome feature of the book comes at the end in which Mr. Kass details his difficulties in acquiring responses to his requests for documents from various government agencies, vaguely hinting that it is all part of the ongoing cover up.All writers experience difficulty acquiring documents but to somehow underscore is efforts he treats us to copies of his correspondence with various lawyers and government agencies. In spite of his letters, what Mr. Kass pictures as conspiracy is likely simple bureaucratic incompetence.

In spite of its shortcomings the book is worth a read if only for the raw data Kass provides. He prints drawings from the killers day planners and verbatim re-printings of some of their writings, giving us an insight to their minds that has evaded the public before now.But if you are already familiar with the case, don't look for anything new here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kass nailed it . . .
If you are interested in Columbine then I think you must read the Kass book. Unlike Cullen, who's only giving you the information that supports the FBI's psychological assessment, Kass is laying it all out there. Sometimes, especially in the beginning, he's giving you too much background information. And there's not an index to help you. However, I got a better feeling for the two boys as human beings and a closer look at the parents and families. If you are interested in the Diversion program and the counselors especially you will get a lot more information on that in this book. I was not impressed by the counselors! But I was interested in the argument that it may have been the Diversion program that pushed these boys over the edge.

One of the most revealing inclusions is the paper that Dylan wrote in which he identifies with a murderer who looks like himself and that his teacher found "disturbing." Cullen omits the fact that the victims in this story are preppies who had taunted the killer previously, setting up Dylan's conclusion that he understood why the killer had acted the way he did. In the end I thought Kass did a better job of explaining Columbine than Cullen by putting this crime in the context of other school shootings. You can see that Dylan especially fits the mold of the typical school shooter, to the extent that you can measure such a thing.I gathered from Kass that the problem is largely one of alienation in which school shooters perceive themselves as inferior and without alternatives in the homogenous society of small-town or suburban America. The whole world seems to be against them and they're willing to lash out indiscriminately against an oppressive system symbolized by the school.

One thing that Kass points out is that as computer geeks these two kids were poised to ride the coming wave of technological innovation to successful careers if they'd cared about that. But they obviously were far too troubled psychologically. We get the first mention in the Kass book on the part of Sue Klebold that Dylan had always been fascinated with guns and explosives. I didn't see that in Cullen. There's a lot of stuff like that in this book that make it worth comparing to Cullen. In the end, the most frustrating thing about this is the police cover up, for me. Those people are supposed to be serving the public interest. As the parent of one victim said, "We were planning the funeral and they were already planning the cover up." Kass ends the book by stating: "It is no leap to expect that thousands of Columbine documents remain locked in government file cabinets." It doesn't sound like we'll ever know the whole story on Columbine. There are too many people, including the parents, who are too afraid of the legal repercussions for that to happen. That is perhaps the most chilling conclusion of this remarkable book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Columbine: A True Crime Story
"Their final count for the day will be 188 shots; Harris 124 and Klebold 64. But they save that last two for themselves," (pg 18). In the book, "Columbine: A True Crime Story," by Jeff Kass, he writes the whole biography about the Columbine Massacre that happened in Jefferson Country, Colorado from beginning to end. Kass explains exactly what the two teenagers looked like. He explains how they were raised, how their parents grew up, and what led them to get to the point where they could not hold their anger in anymore. Kass put some pictures in the book of the boys, their parents, pictures and letters the boys drew, newspapers, victims parents, and survivors. He puts in several facts, evidence, stories, points of views, and a great background. Kass goes in depth about how the boys created their own weapons, how they were able to hide everything before it actually happened, and just the flat out story of it all. He is very accurate and he uncovered tons of information that was unknown.
I enjoyed reading this book a lot; it was easy to follow and it never really got boring. It is one of those books when you are reading it and you start putting yourself in other peoples' shoes because you can feel what they are feeling. It helped me understand further what Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were actually going through. Yes they were killers, but this book shows you that they did not just go around killing for no reason. Their classmates bullied them for their whole lives and their parents were never around. Of course this should not give them the right to go insane and kill other peoples loved ones, but this book helps you understand what got them to this point. I like reading books and watching movies that have a purpose or an effect on you and I felt that this book did its job. I thought it would irritate me that Jeff Kass was writing some about their parents background and I thought that it would be useless information; but it actually came togood use because it kind of showed you that their parents genetically passed on some traits (such as depression) that effected the killers.
I would definitely recommend reading this book even if you are slightly interested. Jeff Kass writes in a style that makes you want to continue on reading. I knew some things about the Columbine Massacre before reading this book, but I had no idea that I would learn all the things I did after reading it. It really makes you think about what goes on in other peoples' lives. There were parts of the book that were a little slower than others but for the most part it was pretty entertaining. It was difficult to predict what he was going to talk about next. The only thing that was kind of hard to follow was all the characters that were mentioned. He mentions several family members from both sides, victims that were killed and their family members, teachers and their families. It is just hard to follow who is who in that sense. I am doing a project on the Columbine Massacre, this is the first book I have read about it and I already feel that I know everything about it.

4-0 out of 5 stars hard journalism
Kass' Columbine book was released in the wake the tenth anniversary of the tragedy along with another from a fellow reporter.Compared to Cullen's "Columbine" which I read prior, "A True Crime Story" lacks the narrative storytelling, but it is hardcore investigative journalism. He fully exposes the incompetence and mistakes in the authorities' response to the shooting as well as the ongoing investigation.

Kass' coverage is broad, from the event itself, to the events preceding, the investigation, lives of victim's families in the ten years hence, etc. Occasionally the digression into loosely related topics takes the book off-balance, but generally most of the material is relevant.

The text includes very interesting drawings and notes from the killers' journals as well as multiple photographs from news coverage, end notes on sources, and various letters to the killers' parents and government officials soliciting assistance for additional information. Despite the otherwise fine journalistic effort, there was no index and there were numerous grammatical errors (although many from direct quoting of source texts).

This is a sad, depressing recap of death, incompetence and ruined lives. Like a car wreck on the highway, the reader is drawn to the carnage and suffering. It's difficult to put down while in the midst of reading, but you are glad to be done with it once you have finished.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good...BUT
Good book BUT I don't see why people try to constantly compare it to Dave Cullens' "Columbine" book all the time. The two books are apples & oranges.
This one is a narative (It covers the parents testamonies a little better, and catches a slip up that Sue Klebold made in her statements early on.)

Cullens reads more like a action novel, still the same facts but very "First person" perspective. it reads faster but no less informative.

Now for the bad part.
I feel that ANY book about a historical event has to be unbiased and this one isn't. It has a extreme twinge of "anti-gun setiment" that I found distasteful. I don't care how you stand on a issue a book that's supposed to be about facts shouldn't reflect your personal feelings at all. Cullens book was completley unbiased.

Jeff Kass also tries to make some kind of connection to the fact that Columbine happened because the boys "Lived in the West" where "The gun is a more acceptible response" and then even tries to connect The Virginia tech Massacre to this theory becasue it took place in the south. Cho Seung Hui was a South Korean immigrant, I doubt he felt a connection to old west gunfighters anymore than Eric & Dylan did.

Dwayne Fuselier was a top FBI profiler, when he tells you they did it for apocolyptic fame and not because they were bullied outcasts, it's time to accept it.
Sadly this book doesn't. ... Read more
