Product Description

As far as Warren Richey knew, his life was on course. A reporter with a beautiful wife and talented son, Richey couldn’t imagine how it could be any better....Then his marriage falls apart and he can’t imagine how it could be any worse.

The divorce leaves Richey questioning everything, while struggling to find a way forward. To get his bearings, he enters the first Ultimate Florida Challenge, an all-out twelve-hundred-mile kayak race around Florida.

The UFC is less of a race than it is a dare or a threat. The thirty-day deadline sets a grueling, twenty-four-hour-a-day pace through shark- , alligator- , and even python-infested waters. But those twelve hundred miles are only a fraction of a journey that pulls Richey back to when he was embedded with troops in Iraq, reporting on missing children, and hiking the mountains of Montana with his son, and shows him where he went wrong, where he went right, and how to do it better the second time around.

Warren Richey’s memoir Without a Paddle is a remarkable physical and emotional journey that cuts to the heart of what it means to be a man, a husband, and a father.

5-0 out of 5 stars So good, I bought it twice.
I bought this book twice...left one half read on a plane, so had to buy it a 2nd time. And yet it was worth it.

This book is hysterical...the way he talks about his car, his life, his divorce just had me in hysterics. I can't recommend it enough.

For those of us also enjoying a mid life crisis...it made me laugh.

5-0 out of 5 stars A top pick!
WITHOUT A PADDLE: RACING TWELVE HUNDRED MILES AROUND FLORIDA BY SEA KAYAK is a pick for any travel, memoir or nautical library, offering a fine survey of the author's discovery of kayaking the Ultimate Florida Challenge. With only 30 days to complete 1,200 miles, Richey found himself recovering from loss and undertaking many challenges. A top pick!

3-0 out of 5 stars Loved the Adventure Parts
I was a little concerned over the first third of this book, as it seemed to be more memoir-style ruminations on failed marriage and finding new love than about kayak adventure, but I stuck with it. I'm glad I did. Once the race begins and Richey spends more time telling us about his adventure, as well as personal and historical anecdotes about the areas he traverses, the book became much more exciting. I still found myself skimming the short chapters that seemed written directly for the benefit of his new love, but that's just me. Other readers might find it heartwarming, it just isn't my thing. I think if there were less of that I would give the book another star or two, but that's just my preference. The book I wanted to read wasn't necessarily the one Richey wanted to write, and there really isn't anything wrong at all with what he delivered. There was still plenty here for me to enjoy anyway, and it definitely makes me want to explore Florida.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Soul of a New Man
I read this book with deep personal interest because I knew Warren in the late 1970s, back when he was an up-and-coming newspaper reporter in New Jersey.I was keen to see his writing and how the story would unfold -- much less how the race went.As I turned each page, I got more involved with the storytelling, even though I knew part of the ending. He has a very lyrical style, though it was a bit sarcastic or exaggerated in places and I didn't expect this.Still, it was fun to move around the coast of Florida with him and imagine all the raw nature he encountered.Every time he talked about sleeping I was thankful for my soft, warm bed and knew never to complain about the daily luxuries that we take for granted. You really felt him pushed to exhaustion, not to mention pushed to the brink emotionally early on.The book is highly satisfying for its skillful weaving of a physical journey, an emotional journey, and a spiritual journey -- all intense, all coming together at the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars it is quite deep story
Reading this book is like paddling some remote river on early morning. Every turn brings new sight, water is clean and air is crisp.
Excellent. ... Read more

Tamsins work is great, but you may need somethine more up to date if your planning trips...but the the bool is still full of great trips.I was looking for a book about much longer tours (expedictions). This book wasn't it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Close but no cigar...
If you are looking for one day trips, this is the book for you. Good descriptions and directions but in general those are the trips you would do if you asked around. The routes described in the book are not long, calm and easy. Great for begginers and also a nice pace change for hardcore kayakers. It's a good book to have, for the quick one day getaways. But still no cigar for a multiple day kayaker. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't wait to go!
Being a fan of sea kayaking off the coast of Maine, and having vacationed in Nova Scotia last summer and loving it, this book was a natural. There are 42 routes described, broken up into 5 sections of the province.I was particularly interested in the South Shore, from Halifax down to Yarmouth, not one of the most glamerous portions of Nova Scotia. The guides spell out the distance, put in and take out points, weather and sea conditions which you need to be cautious of, and some of the high spots of each route. As the Island is subject to some very extreem weather and sea conditions, it is strong on cautions. It also provides map and book references. It gave me everything that I would need to be able to plan a trip there. Now, to find the time. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I built a kayak using this book
Excellent book if you want to create a beautiful kayak. I built the Guillemot kayak using this book, no need to purchase plans separately. Some prints may have some errors in the tables but you can find updates in Nick Schade's website

    [...]

I entered the right numbers and was able to draw all the forms. The kayak is gorgeous. If anything, the Guillemot single tracks way too loosely for my taste. It was too difficult to stay on course without doing constact corrections, which made impossible to achieve a decent cruising speed. However, After adding a little fin keel the kayak tracks a lot better and it is still quite maneuverable. Overall very satisfied with the contents of the book. The techniques described are good to build your own boat from scratch but you can completment them by reading Ted Moore's Kayakcraft (both books complement each other). It is also very useful to look for additional information in the internet (e.g. staples construction or hand beveling wood strips). Useful information can be found from Nick Schade's website, One Ocean Kayaks and Blue Heron Kayaks just to name useful sites with plenty of information on kayakbuilding.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
Again before I began I had to convert all the measurements of one the three kayaks, to millimetres and made the forms ready to put on the strong back.I found the terminology in the book a bit difficult to follow at first, given that I'm not yet into the boat building scene, but having read through the book a couple of times I think I'll be able to use it as a good reference as I build my first kayak.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book
I do wood working as a hobby and I always challenge myself.I decided to build a boat of some kind and bought this book.It goes more in depth than I thought it would have and there are also references in the back which I have contacted and they are all very helpful.I highly recommend this book if you want to build a canoe or kayak.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed to start my kajak project
Well structured and written with lots of information to give you the kick start needed to begin making my strip built kayak.

5-0 out of 5 stars All you need to know is in this book-
The author truly covers everything you will need to know to build your first kayak. I will reccomend that if you have no previous knowledge of tablesaws or wood working that you should practce cutting with some cheaper wood before you go straight for the cedar- have fun! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "An essential read for those keen to take up sea kayaking"
This is not just another 'how to' book on sea kayaking. Johan Loots has very carefully put together a 'manual' that covers everything a beginner should know from choosing a kayak and equipment to getting out on the water with different paddling techniques, recovery and rescue. Also covered in excellent detail are sections on seamanship and navigation, and planning a trip (served me very well!!). The last chapter covers great destination ideas from around the world, that could get anyone caught up in this fantastic sport!!

Of course, any new paddler should always get professional instruction when they first start out, but this book provides all the technical back-up to get you started. This glossy book has excellent step by step instructions with photos and diagrams for you to follow. I have read 'Sea Kayaking - The essential guide to equipment and techniques' at least a dozen times and still find it an excellent reference tool. The author also gives advantages and disadvantages for different types of equipment and ways of doing things, so you get to make informed choices.

I first purchased this book before getting started in the sport and found it an essential guide to equipment and techniques (as the title suggests) and still use and recommend the book to others. Being an avid reader of anything on the subject of kayaking, I still think this is an excellent read and highly recommend it to all those wanting to 'start out' in the sport!! ... Read more

Amid the lore and romantic past of the Baja they discovered that what began as a mutual exploration would soon become an unforgettable test of will.

1-0 out of 5 stars Homage to ego
Not just whiny, but pretentious. The writer is a good adventurer.I'm sorry that his marriage did not work out.But I had to quit reading after a chapter or two.The author is preachy, and frequently reminds the reader of his morally superior views.Even when I agreed, I found the author's constant self-praise exhausting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
Those who criticize this book as too "whiny" might be the type of person that is turned off by books without a Disneyesque happy ending. This book does contain a lot of darkness and has a existentialist tone throughout. The final sentance (a lyric) is "Life is worth nothing." If you are not comfortable reading a book that delves into the darker realms of our existence then you might not like it. If however, you enjoy reading an author who is brilliant and able to bare their soul, you'll like this. The author is very knowledgeable about history, science, culture, etc... and I found his observations to be spot on. His politics are to the Left of course... How many environmentalists and anti-racists are Rightists? If you are demented enough to have voted for George Bush forget about this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too much whining
Waterman spends most of the book whining. The three main threads of his complaint are the ecological devastation, how the native peoples were taken advantage of by the various colonizers, and how his one year old marriage seems to be on the rocks. When he talks about the stark beauty of the land, it is always in the same breath with how badly the place is getting ruined.
I read the book when I was in Baja California Sur in May, 2003. The place was beautiful, the weather was great and the people were extremely friendly. The book's doomsday predictions were very much out of whack with the reality.

4-0 out of 5 stars Modern Jesuit
It's very well written and full of interesting information. but it's one of these misanthropic ecology tracts. Much of what he says is well justified but, considered as entertainment, it was so full of grouching about the adverse effects of everything on the environment that it ended up with too many sour notes.
I was struck by how close his moral attutudes were to those of the early missionaries he describes. He extols the virtues of mortifying the flesh, and relishes describing the hardships he has inflicted on himself. He keeps encountering residents who do not share his beliefs about how life should be lived. They commit such crimes as fishing and using toilet paper. They are not the original inhabitants of the country.

1-0 out of 5 stars Love on the Rocks
I read the book after sailing the Sea of Cortez. It was a depressing book by a disenchanted romantic written during what appears to be the breakup of his marrage. The wife sounds great but he can't maintain her paddling pace and she does not share his penchant for whining.) If you are looking for a guide book to the Sea of Cortez, this book has little to offer. I meet some folks at Bay of Conception who were among the few who had received favorable remarks from the author. They were furious that he had totally distorted their comments. Save yourself the greif and try something else. ... Read more

I've found this book really invaluable. It's explanations are very clear, and everything is arranged as numbered steps to make it easy to remember. There are also photographs for every step, so you can build up a complete picture of the technique being described. There's no waffle or padding - everything is concise and to the point.

Their coverage is also very complete, with lots of useful variations and alternatives, but still presented without confusing those looking for the basic technique.

I've been studying this book for a year now, and I still find myself going back to it. I would recommend it to any sea kayaker.

4-0 out of 5 stars Yes, definately take your map and compass.
As a south Florida resident for many years and a 6-year kayaker, I have found Bruce Wachob's book very useful. It gives excellent directions to launch sites in the last 30 miles of the Florida Keys. His self-taughtdescriptions of this sub-tropical ecosystem are excellent. His maps aresome of the best you will find in this type of book; however, it is wise toalways have a high quality nautical map handy.Good nautical maps can beobtained at dive shops and elsewhere throughout the keys.In any case, whenever kayaking in south Florida, pay close and continuous attention toyour location.A navigation lapse can cost you miles of paddling andsevere anxiety!Wachob's book is a must read for first-time kayakers inthe area.

3-0 out of 5 stars Take your map and compass
My review is based on reading this book, and then traveling to the Keys where a friend and I followed some of the trip itineraries. I am not from the Keys, and this was my first visit there in 20 years, so good directions were of the utmost importance. The book does make easy work of findinglaunch sites, especially for those who aren't familiar with the area, butsome paddling routes were confusing to follow. The mangroves look very muchthe same, and it can be difficult to distinguish one small island from thenext. My paddling buddy and I took turns navigating and he had the sameproblem. The book gives the impression that you'll see sharks, fish, rays, etc., even noting that sightings are "common" in some areas. Wesaw little marine life in our week of paddling, but did see plenty ofwading birds. Make no mistake - this is a beautiful paddling destination. And the book is worth reading, but a good nautical map is a must-have. Weended up using the book as a starting point, and planning our ownitineries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the kayaking aficianado or Keys nature buff!
As a 14 year Keys resident, I can say that this book is a must if you love the water and are visiting the Keys.It would also be enjoyed bynature-lovers everywhere as the author describes in detail the unusualsub-tropical ecosystem that one will be witness to if kayaking in the Keys.Mr. Wachob's love of his subject is unequalled and it makes for an easy andthoroughly enjoyable "read". As a man who grew up in the Keys andis a kayaking guide, the author's knowledge of where to go to kayak andwhat to see in the varied Keys waters is invaluable to the Keys visitor orresident. If you didn't want to visit these islands before reading, youwill definitely want to afterward. Recommended!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing modern adventure
I had previously read this trio's book of kayaking down the Antarctic peninsula and had the pleasure of meeting Graham on an Antarctic "adventure cruise" on which he was the expedition coordinator.Upon return home, I bought this book.

It is a superb modern adventure tale when there are diminishing opportunities for true adventures.Good writing, excellent photography, and most importantly a superb narrative. The three authors are humble about their extraordinary accomplishment.I know I've read a good adventure book when I get the itch to replicate their journey if only in part.

Anyone who has travelled in the Antarctic or enjoys reading about this part of the globe should definitely add this book to their library.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is almost laconic Adventure, extraodinary feat, excellent photos and writing
The Unclaimed coast follows in the footsteps of the first kayak/adventure book written by this threesome, Graham Charles, Marcus Waters and Mark Jones. IN 2004 they published their book about their trip down the Antartic coast. Now they are the first New zealanders since Frank Worsley visted South Georgia in the James Caird with Shackleton to see the wild South coast of the island.

The three have been friends for many years and have kayaked all over New Zealand. Charles has written the definitive guide to New Zealand white Water. It seems a natural extension for them to take their undoubted skills off to other parts of the world

What sets this book apart from many other travel books are fourfold- firstly - it really is an adventure. No one else has ever kayaked that stretch of coast - let alone around the island. In fact South Georgia is a wild place where wild winds and weather rise up out of the Antarctic and batter it all year round. The adventure in itself is extraodinary - and those with a love of Ernest Shackleton will enjoy these latter-day successors to his legacy.

Secondly, the writing, which is shared by the three of them is of excellent quality. They share the telling of the story - writing a chapter each in succession. This works more effectively than I first supposed. As there is variation in their style which is quite nice. Their different perspectives give the book an extra depth.

Thirdly Graham Charles's photographs are just stunning - absolutely incredible. Considering many of them were taken while bobbing around in the boat they are amazing. He really captures the colours and depth of the environment. They talk of trying to compete on the coast with the wildlife - the photographs really demonstrate this problem.

Finally, it really does open up the island of South Georgia along with its history for the readers. They did their reasearch thoroughly on the area. Not just the history but the maps and weather - and this they have documented well. I loved the links back to various writeers, from Captain Cook to Ernest Shackleton. It makes an amazing read.

This is one of my highly recommended reads of 2009. The trio have since gone on a couple of other adventures - including a trip to Tierra del Fuego and another to the Antarctic Peninsular. They follow the same format (photographs, research excellent writing) and I would recommend that as well. They are difficult to get hold of but well worth the effort in doing so.

2-0 out of 5 stars No pictures for parts and types of equipment
Unfortunately, this book is a rare example of bad informative books I have recently bought. There is no picture when this book explains something. For example the book explains several parts of kayaks, but one cannot understand anything because there isn't any single picture that will point out parts of a kayak boat. This is the beginning, of course. Whenever the book starts to talk about a specific type of pedal, or another piece of gear, you are sure confused, because there is no picture.
There is only one good about this book, which gives the names of good kayak books! So instead of buying this book, I advise everyone to buy other books concentrating on the subject matter with good explanations instead of a book of book names. ... Read more

    VA GUIDE TO BACKCOUNTRY ADVENT

The backbone of a good guide is detailed information in an organized, accessible style; Sea Kayaking the Carolinas has what it takes. Each of the 70 kayak trips is rated for difficulty (providing ease for novices and challenges for old hands). The book includes maps and details on boat ramps, campsites, and hazards from North Carolina's Mackey Island to South Carolina's Savannah National Wildlife Refuge. Neither price nor weight are inflated with glossy pictures; what you get is practical instruction, an introduction to the local flora and fauna, and a guide to the joys of kayaking that's exceptionally easy to use. ... Their relative isolation, stunning scenery and Norse history make Orkney and Shetland a very special place. For the sea kayaker island archipelagos are particularly rewarding ...none more so than these. Illustrated with superb colour photographs and useful maps throughout, this book is a practical guide to help you select and plan trips. It will provide inspiration for future voyages and a souvenir of journeys undertaken. As well as providing essential information on where to start and finish, distances, times and tidal information, this book does much to stimulate interest in the environment. It is full of facts and anecdotes about local history, geology, scenery, seabirds and sea mammals. ... Read more
