Product Description

You may be contemplating your first Linux installation. Or you may have been using Linux for years and need to know more about adding a network printer or setting up an FTP server. Running Linux, now in its fifth edition, is the book you'll want on hand in either case. Widely recognized in the Linux community as the ultimate getting-started and problem-solving book, it answers the questions and tackles the configuration issues that frequently plague users, but are seldom addressed in other books.

This fifth edition of Running Linux is greatly expanded, reflecting the maturity of the operating system and the teeming wealth of software available for it. Hot consumer topics such as audio and video playback applications, groupware functionality, and spam filtering are covered, along with the basics in configuration and management that always have made the book popular.

Running Linux covers basic communications such as mail, web surfing, and instant messaging, but also delves into the subtleties of network configuration--including dial-up, ADSL, and cable modems--in case you need to set up your network manually. The book can make you proficient on office suites and personal productivity applications--and also tells you what programming tools are available if you're interested in contributing to these applications.

Other new topics in the fifth edition include encrypted email and filesystems, advanced shell techniques, and remote login applications. Classic discussions on booting, package management, kernel recompilation, and X configuration have also been updated.

The authors of Running Linux have anticipated problem areas, selected stable and popular solutions, and provided clear instructions to ensure that you'll have a satisfying experience using Linux. The discussion is direct and complete enough to guide novice users, while still providing the additional information experienced users will need to progress in their mastery of Linux.

Whether you're using Linux on a home workstation or maintaining a network server, Running Linux will provide expert advice just when you need it.

Amazon.com Review
The Linux operating system has made a lot of progress in the past few years, and Running Linux has progressed right along with it to remain the single best general-purpose book for curious computer users who want to install, use, and enjoy Linux. The team of authors present a text that's simultaneously detailed and readable. Coupled with an inquisitive and capable reader, that's a recipe for success with the world's most popular open-source operating system. This new edition adds coverage of the GNOME desktop environment, the Apache/MySQL/PHP server suite, and the Postfix mail transfer daemon. It also covers core capabilities and behaviors of Linux through kernel version 2.4. There's better coverage of network security (including firewalling and ADSL link configuration), and coverage of how to set up audio-related hardware and software.

Perhaps best of all, this book conveys a sense of the "Linux attitude" as the authors see it. Linux, they say, is largely about experimentation, research, trial and error, and participation in a community. This comes in welcome contrast to books that focus on recipes (follow these steps to accomplish A; do these things to make your system do B). Though the authors of this book provide lots of how-to information, it's always presented with an eye toward further exploration. In explaining how to build the kernel, for example, the authors provide six concise steps as a reference, but then go on for several pages about designing makefiles and how to deal with error messages. This book's a treat. --David Wall

Topics covered: Assuming you know next to nothing about Linux, socially and historically as well as technically, this book teaches you what you need to know to make the operating system meet your desktop and server computing requirements. Coverage takes you from preparing to install Linux (in a multi-OS environment if you wish), continues through system administration and the most useful applications (like TeX and Internet clients), and proceeds to cover programming tools and server daemons (notably Apache, MySQL, and PHP). The coverage is mostly generic, but peculiarities of Red Hat, SuSE, and Debian get attention, too. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Unnecessary
I got this book after a friend of mine highly recommended. Unfortunately I feel buying a book on Linux makes little sense giving that Linux constantly changes and the book is never up to date. Also there is a ton of material out there on the WEB so unless you just want your bookshelf to look good there really isn't much reason for buying Linux books.

Other then that I think this is still the best written book about Linux. It's easy to read and it doesn't make you fall a sleep after first few pages.

3-0 out of 5 stars Looking for better
There is a new edition of this book out now.
Not a book to recommend for basic users of today's Linux.

5-0 out of 5 stars THe best Linux Book on the Market
This is hands-down, the best Linux book on the Market today...It navigates you easily through an ocean of knowledge when dealing with this operating system. One can quite literally begin at page one and read through the final chapter and have an expert view of Linux Operating Sytems.Highest recommendations.

4-0 out of 5 stars So far, so good...
BEWARE: Many of these customer reviews are dated. For example, the best and worst cited by Amazon are from 1999 and 2001, respectively. This is the 5th edition, published in late 2005/early 2006.FYI...

I gave it four stars simply because what I did read was very helpful, but I have much more to go.I may give it five later.

5-0 out of 5 stars My GoTo Book
I love this book; I recommend it to people at least twice a day when I visit [...].This book covers every aspect of installing and booting a GNU/Linux operating system, from choosing a distribution, to running specific pieces of software. It includes tangible and detailed, though introductory, material on hardware, networking, software installation, using Emacs and Vi, desktop environments, security, and package management. Many of the topics, such as Samba and networking, focus on making your GNU/Linux installation part of a wider network with a variety of operating systems. Some of it, for example the chapter on TCP/IP is not even GNU/Linux-specific, but is highly educational.

The best quality of this book that makes it my goto book is that it is a good introduction to thinking about things in the Unix tradition, and firmly keeps encouraging the reader to use the command-line instead of steering him or her to GUI tools. That's why I suggest reading the entire book (not necessarily comprehending, but reading) before trying to install a GNU/Linux distribution. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
I liked this book a lot. I bought it in high school and it was a good book. It was a little elementary at some points. It talked about running a business such as T-Shirt Printing(where you put designs on a shirt and sell it). A lot of the information was great though. If youre in college it may be a waste of time it's more high school. It's for those who don'tknow much about businesses.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book.
I beleive this is a great book.It gives excellent motivation in getting started in a business. It helps you to understand how to run your business and get it started. It even gives you examples of current businesses started by young entreprenuers.

1-0 out of 5 stars waste of money
I regret buying this book. It's not a guide for young people to starting your own business unless you call part time babysitting a business or selling your goods at a flea market as having your own business. The "businesses" the author has in mind are are, for example, selling homemade goods to your friends or anyone else you can get to buy them. If you call having a lemonade standa business, then this book may pertain to you. ... Read more

Product Description

From internationally bestselling author Jamie Freveletti comes a riveting new thriller featuring brilliant biochemist Emma Caldridge, except this time there's nowhere to run. . . .

Emma Caldridge is on mile thirty-six of the fifty-five-mile Comrades ultramarathon in South Africa when a roadside car bomb explodes. Dazed and disoriented, she regains consciousness after the blast to find a man standing over her with a white plastic injector. She feels the prick of a needle and the rush of medication under her skin, but before she can make a sound, the man is gone.

Shaken by the event and unsure of what substance was pumped into her, Emma calls the one person who can help her figure things out: Edward Banner of the security company Darkview. But Banner has his hands full with another emergency: Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden have attacked a cruise ship, and Darkview has been hired to assist with the rescue.

However, according to intelligence sources, the ship is carrying cargo far more valuable than wealthy passengers—something that could be a new weapon of unknown origin. Suspecting the weapon may be chemical in nature, Banner asks Emma to infiltrate the ship and use her professional expertise to identify it. Emma knows it's a risky job, one that she might not survive. But when she learns that special agent Cameron Sumner—a man who has saved her life in the past—is among the hostages, nothing will stop her from getting onboard, no matter what the cost.

3-0 out of 5 stars What would seem like a suspenseful story really wasn't for me.
This novel is chockful of dangerous situations almost from beginning to end.One would think, then, that it would have been extremely easy to stay interested in the story and to not want to put the book down. For me, this was NOT the case.Especially from about the halfway point until shortly before the end, I had to force myself to pick up the book from my nightstand every night. It sat in my car for a week or two, untouched.Trust me, if it was THAT exciting a book, I would have taken the time to go get it from the car and keep reading it.

The writing is fine--neither unsually bad nor unusually good. There is a lot of action and danger. This isn't so much a mystery as a "how are they going to pull this off?"It requires a massive suspension of disbelief (as do many books of the suspense/thriller genre) but other than that, it has more than enough action and danger to please a suspense lover.

It isn't a BAD book, so why didn't it hold my attention?I can't point out major flaws that would explain WHY, which is unusual for me.It's usually pretty easy for me to say "I liked THIS but I didn't like THAT" when I write a review, but this one is very difficult. Here are the only two theories I have:

1) Some stories are benefitted by a quick read, while some definitely lose steam when the book is read over too long a time.I am usually reading 2-3 books at the same time, so it takes me a month or so to finish any given book.I do think that probably hurt me in enjoying the constant danger and suspense of this book.

2) Perhaps it was the constant onslaught of DANGER DANGER WILL ROBINSON! that was the problem for me.Usually, you have some character development or something that slows down the action from time to time and gives you a break from the intensity. In this book, it's pretty much all danger all the time.Since so much of the danger was so over the top, perhaps I just got overdosed on it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Somali Pirate Thriller, But a 'Running' Book? No.
As an avid runner, Freveletti hooked me with the Comrades Ultramarathon. If that is the hook for you, I'd say to skip the book. There is very little to justify calling this a running book. In fact, the "Running Dark" referenced in the title is the author's own invented term for a ship running without lights to evade attack/capture by pirates off of coastal Africa.

The book is a fairly conventional international spy thriller, focused in large part - as an increasing number of books are - on the interplay between government intelligence agencies and defense or intelligence contractors. The pace is brisk and maybe even a bit too frenetic as Freveletti jumps back and forth between the ship under siege at sea, the stateside machinations of politicos and businessmen, and the heroine's efforts to make her way from South Africa to the ship, where her chemical skills are needed to identify vials of poison mixed in with vaccines en route to the continent on an aid shipment that is aboard the cruise vessel.

Its a fast read and enjoyable, not too heavy or taxing. The author's note claims that the book's "ripped from the headlines" storyline is coincidental. Be that as it may, they may have been better off promoting this as a Somali pirate thriller than a running novel.

4-0 out of 5 stars Running From The Devil Sequel Is A Little Different But Still Good
Running Dark by Jamie Freveletti is the sequel to her debut novel Running from the Devil where readers were introduced to chemist and long distance runner turned amateur special agent Emma Caldridge. While readers can probably follow Running Dark as a standalone story, I recommend starting with Running from the Devil first. The first novel gives a level of insight into the private security Darkview that is assumed in Running Dark.

As the story begins, we find Caldridge running a race in South Africa. After a bomb goes off near her, Emma is drugged with an EpiPen.She goes on to finish her race with more stamina and speed than she had during the first half.

Meanwhile, Cameron Sumner is guarding a German cruise ship near Somalia in order to remove him from the heat from the aftermath of Running with the Devil.Edward Banner, chief of Darkview, learns of a mysterious chemical weapon on board the ship. When Emma contacts him about her attack, she decides to head to Sumner's aide after learning of his plight at the hands of Somali pirates. They story that unfolds is fast moving and well paced until it reaches a satisfying conclusion. However some questions remain unanswered hinting that another installment featuring Caldridge and Darkview is on the horizon.

Running Dark is somewhat different than its predecessor.Caldridge's athletic ability plays only a minor role in the story as does her background as a chemist.I found this to be more of a pure thriller, but satisfying nonetheless.Freveletti's writing style flows effortlessly page after page, and I found myself consuming the book as much as reading it.I look forward to the next installment, and I recommend this one.

Overall:B

3-0 out of 5 stars It was okay.
"Running Dark"

Synopsis:
"From internationally bestselling author Jamie Freveletti comes a riveting new thriller featuring brilliant biochemist Emma Caldridge, except this time there's nowhere to run. . .
But Banner has his hands full with another emergency: Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden have attacked a cruise ship, and Darkview has been hired to assist with the rescue."

My take,
The book starts off with a "bang" with the roadside bomb that throws Emma Caldridge to the ground and she is approached and stuck with an object that looks like an epi-pen. She is able to get herself to her feet and is compelled to finish the race at breakneck speeds considering the injuries she sustained in the blast. She is very concerned with what might have been injected into her at the bombing site and proceeds to do testing to diagnose the substance. While this is going on Cameron Sumner (a coworker) is on a cruise ship in the Gulf of Aden and pirates proceed to overtake the ship and Cameron is forced to expose his identity to help protect the cruise ship and its occupants from the pirates.

Edward Banner is the head of Darkview which is a security company that was hired to protect areas of the Gulf of Aden and convinces Emma Caldridge to sneak onto the cruise ship and help Cameron Sumner. Emma's main objective is to determine what the cargo is and how dangerous it may be to the world.

I won this book in the [...] Early Reviewers Giveaway. This is the first book by Jamie Freveletti that I've read. I had heard great things about her first book "Running with the Devil" but did not have the opportunity to read it. As I read "Running Dark" there were some areas that probably would have been better understood had I read her first book. There were also times while reading Running Dark that things seem to be cut short or left hanging or unfinished. I hope that some day I will have the opportunity to read her first book and then read Running Dark and maybe things will come to light.

5-0 out of 5 stars "If at first you don't succeed you're running about average." M. H. Alderson
Emma Caldridge is running an ultramarathon in South Africa when a roadside bomb explodes near her. As she lay dazed, a man injects her with some medication and leaves. She is able to finish the race with surprising speed and endurance.

Kahlil Ibraham Mungabe is in Dubai when his contact tells him that he'll pay to have Mungabe and his Somalia pirates intercept a cruise ship. The ship holds pharmacuticals that his contact, The Vulture, wants.

The ship is being protected by a U.S. security company, Darkview. That company has sunk a number of Mungabe's boats and captured the pirates to stand trial. Mungabe wants them put out of business and The Vulture informs him that a plan to do that is in motion.

On the "Kaiser Franz" Cameron Sumner, an employee of Darkview is the first to see the pirates. He's managed to bring his rifle on board the ship and is able to fire a few rounds, wounding one pirate and discouraging the remainder of them, for now.

The Vulture meets with the man who does his dirty work and informs him that he wants Emma to be dosed again. They know that another dose of the chemical will be fatal to her.

There are several attempts to discredit and disrupt Darkview as Emma risks her life to board the ship. As a chemist, she will be able to analyze the pharmacuticals.

The story flows skillfully and the suspense is constant. The author's prior novel, "Running with the Devil" won an International Thriller Award and this novel adds to her work and excellent reputation. ... Read more

This slim volume is concise, to the point, and a quick read, which contains some essentials for the pastor or other leader who needs to know how to say 'farewell," whether circumstances are great or uncomfortable. Oswald is an expert. Rev. Mary Latela

5-0 out of 5 stars Running Throught the Thistles: Terminating a Ministerial Relationship with a Parish
Don't overlook this marvelous resource just because it is thirty years old! Roy Oswald's
long essay has brought together two core issues for life and ministry: 1. the fact that each of us mustsay good-bye many times during our lives including the final leave-taking at our death; and 2.the particular application to theleave-taking between a minister and a congregation when a minister leaves. We in transition ministries value his
words both for our own lives and the work we do with congregations who have just lost their settled minister.

I have used this book and suggested this book to a lot of pastors as they make a change in their ministry. It gives some great ways to say goodbye.

4-0 out of 5 stars Insight Into How Agents and Informants Are Actually Spotted, Assessed, and Recruited.
I first read "Running a Ring of Spies" several years ago, and thought it was pretty good. I have recently re-read the book, and again found it interesting and informative.

"Running a Ring of Spies" offers insight into how agents and informants are actually spotted, assessed, and recruited. The book looks at the motivations for spying - MALICE: Money, Anger, Lust, Ideology, Compromise, and Ego, and discusses some ways a recruiter and case officer may exploit these motivations.

Moreover, "Running a Ring of Spies" is written in an easy-to-read format, offering stories of various people being recruited to be spies (perhaps based on actual events, or perhaps made up to illustrate the methods discussed in the book). Either way, reading this book will give you a basic understanding of how spies are recruited.

An entertaining book for those who enjoy "spy stories" and informative for those who want to develop a little security awareness and understanding of how intelligence agencies operate.

1-0 out of 5 stars Junk Novel
Not much info you wouldn't have learned from an old spy movie. Not worth buying. My subject line calls it a novel because that's what the anecdotes seem to be.Might have a kernel of truth in them, but no more.Great for a Walter Mitty-type, but didn't see anything I couldn't figure out on my own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for life in general.
It is sad to say that many of the techniques in this book REALLY do help out when dealing with evil co-workers and in-laws and such.If you want people to leave you alone, but can't figure out how...try blackmail! It may not be the Christian thing to do, but it works.Just remember to keep your own nose clean, and try to disengage yourself from circumstances that require the use of such tactics.
Remember: Use this information for defensive purposes only! (or else you'll be the evil one who needs to be blackmailed)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book - simple describes the real world of intelligence
If you are realy believes that intelligence done by brave covert agents this book is for You . It's will break many of those myths you are believing in, You will discover that spys are recruited (!) from the target organization or even blackmailed for turning to spys AND NOT "inserted" into target organization by sophisticated covert operations. You will learn how CASE OFFICERS works, how they turn someone into spying, the tricks they use to work and cover they tracks and more more other usefull information. You will still have to find by youself a lot of other sorts of information (like surveillance and avoiding it) after you finish this book .BUT AS YOU WILL SEE YOUR POINT OF VIEW ON INTELLIGENCE GATHERING WILL BE COMPLETLY CHANGED-NOW YOU WILL SEE THING THROW ALMOST PROFFESIONAL EYES. I didn't mean that this book will replace 3 years of training in intelligence agency (like CIA or the Mosad), I mean that after You will finish this book You will discover how those agiences really works , and real word is differnt from the movies. It's good point to start , to open Your eyes after many years watching catoons abouts brave covert agents that spying the bad guys ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Bought 2 more copies
This book does contain the real secrets beind how the spy trade works. On the news you often hear that a piece of information can't be declassified because it would give away the ways & means used to collect intellgence by the agency. This book contains those ways & means.Fear, lust and greed, exploiting human nature. How to find someones thumb screws and force him or her to become a spy for you.Spying is a dirty, dirty business; someone you've known for 20 years can turn out to be your worst enemy. As the old saying goes "Your worst enemy is always a friend."The author of this book also has another one titled HOW TO RUN A SAFE HOUSE.Again, packed with great information. These books do contain dangerous information if looked at from the right perspective. The 911 hijackers used the exact information contained in these books to set up shop, plan the job, operate safe houses, etc. all right under the noses of the FBI.Remember, a terrorist doesn't see himself as a terrorist. He sees himself as a secret agent.I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn the spy-craft tricks-of-the-trade. ...
