5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on Jax-ws.
I have worked on developing web services programs for many years and also attended Java one conference last year where participants learn more about Jax-ws package. If you really want to know how to develop Java web services using jax-ws technology, just read and try the examples from this book from the first chapter to the last and you will get everything you need to know, and more about Jax-ws technology. Remember that the author is a professor so he will place emphasis on important points and you can always pick up other details from other places like Metro Web Services Technologies web sites, etc. You may find some minor errors when you try the examples in this book but they will not stop you and you can reach the destination of becoming good in Web services using Jax-ws, if that is what you want.

I would highly recommend this book to software developers and analysts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book, good examples but it all requires prior knowledge
This is a good book, although some examples don't work actually. The most appeal thing is this book is that examples include some codes from other Java APIs like XML for instance, and how to use them in WebServices development. About the main topic I would say this book was perfect for my needs. I'm new in Webservices and I could make a tour using SOAP and RESTful webservices, and it was very interesting for me.
I just want to warn some readers, specifically those who don't have prior knowledge in advanced concepts like dependency injection and servlets, that this book requires this knowledge.

1-0 out of 5 stars If you want correct details, Don't Waste Your Money!
The reviewers of this book who rave about the details in this book certainly did not try to execute any of the example code. If they had, they would know that these are errors all the way through the book in the code examples.

The errors are not trival if you are trying to learn by focusing on what exactly the code is doing. In one example in the first chapter, there is a whole class left out of the source code, nor does the book mention it in the text.

Go to the errata section on the publishers website, the list of errors is long. The error I mention above is not in the errata either.

How does a book like this get out to the store shelves without proper editing?

If this is the best the author can do, please don't screw over the readers that are making their best efforts to get it right. If you would rather write a conceptual book, that's fine, just leave the details out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
I did learn a lot which is all that you can ask for. The book is thin - less than 300 pages, and the author writes in a good conversational style. It is a good tutorial but it probably does not make a good reference as it does not go into too much detail in some places. For example it does not explain how to create a handler when it returns a false value (how is the response created?), and a little more detail on the client side BARE style. Also, the code examples do not use logging correctly. But these are very small annoyances compared to the overall learning.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Java WS book written by a C/C++ veteran?
The author appears to be a C/C++ veteran instead of a Java guru. Method names such as read_teams_from_file and variable names such as team_map are everywhere.

The author also appears to ignore other common industry practice or industry norm. E.g. in the RestfulTeams service (page 137), information about the new team to create is contained in the HTTP header rather than in the body of the HTTP request to demonstrate "the flexibility of REST-style services".

While it is interesting to show it is possible to develop a Dispatch client against a SOAP based service with HTTP_BINDING (page 158), the author does not even mention the better, easier and more concise alternative, i.e., to use the default SOAP_BINDING for the Dispatch client.

Section 5.3.2 HTTP BASIC Authentication (page 212) is another example of abusing a well defined and well understood IT industry terminology, while the true HTTP BASIC Authentication (on Tomcat) is covered under another section (page 219, Container-Managed Authentication and Authorization) without explicitly lableing it as such.

Overall, the first 120 pages is a good introduction to JAX-WS 2.1. The rest of the book appears to be filler from various lecture notes. ... Read more

Product Description
Running the World is an unprecedented look behind the scenes at the "most powerful committee in the history of the world"-the men and women closest to the president of the United States who make America's decisions affecting war and peace, who are the architects of everything from covert operations to market bailouts to combating terrorism. This is the National Security Council, and its importance has never been clearer.

Drawing from 130 exclusive interviews with many of the best-known and the most-significant figures to have played a central role in shaping America's national security and foreign policies, David Rothkopf depicts with an eye for both personal detail and historical implications the real events from which today's headlines and Tom Clancy novels are drawn. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Runing the world
as yet have not read this book, have to give it stars or else the site will not close

3-0 out of 5 stars Superclass was way better
His following book, Superclass was way better and easier to read.Start with that first. You have to be a historian to appreciate the detail that Running the World presents. Not a bad read, but long winded and detailed to the max.Decent addition to the historian library. But you probably wont be reading this one multiple times as you would Superclass.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating history of the presidents and their advisors.
The book is a little long and could have lost a few pages and been the better for it.However, the topic was fascinating and the author did a great job bringing the history to life.

2-0 out of 5 stars Wrong Jody
David Rothkopf's book does a good job of demonstrating that personality and proximity have more to do with the national security decisionmaking process than any specific procedures or players.Meaning it does not matter if the Secretary of State is a respected, intelligent person who is the titular head of US foreign policy. What matters is who has access to the president and a good relationship with him (some day her).

Unfortunately, I did not pick up the book to learn that as any biography of Kissinger, and numerous books about the current Bush Administration have demonstrated that reality clearly. What I was hoping for, and barely found, was a book much more focused on the structure, budget, staffing, and so on of the NSC.The book sometimes found its way to those points, but spent more time on other, better known topics.Of course, reading about Iran-Contra or the war in Kosovo are interesting, but they can also be found in plenty of other books without an NSC focus.I did not feel the book really leveraged its topic well in its discussion of the major foreign policy and national security events since World War II.

The funniest error in the book is that at one point, the author refers to Jimmy Carter's press secretary as Jody Foster, not Jody Powell. How could no one catch that? The problem that creates, as other reviewers have noted, is that it calls into question everything else in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on the National Security Council and its History.
This book takes the reader from the beginning of the National Security Council (NSC) up through the Clinton administration.

It describes how the NSC has evolved over time and the nature of its functioning and how different Presidents utilized its advice.

As the NSC is instrumental in providing U.S. national security advice to the President, this book is an important one in the study of Presidential power, decisionmaking and the national security policymaking.

It describes the policymaking process and the inter-agency and bureaucratic formulation of policy and how different Presidents structured the functioning of the NSC differently to suit their needs or what they and their top advisors deemed to be the optimal national security policymaking structure.

I found the book to be excellent, engaging, and thorough study.I particularly was interested in learning about how Henry Kissinger and his numerous proteges that worked with him and eventually held their own top positions in government had a significant and substantive impact on U.S. national security policy for the last 30+ years.

This book is required reading for the student of U.S. national security policy formulation. ... Read more

Product Description
Jon Katz, a respected journalist, father, and husband, was turning fifty. His writing career had taken a dubious turn, his wife had a demanding career of her own, his daughter was preparing to leave home for college, and he had become used to a sedentary lifestyle. Wonderfully witty and insightful, Running to the Mountain chronicles Katz's hunger for change and his search for renewed purpose and meaning in his familiar world.

Armed with the writings of Thomas Merton and his two faithful Labradors, Katz trades in his suburban carpool-driving and escapes to the mountains of upstate New York. There, as he restores a dilapidated cabin, learns self-reliance in a lightning storm, shares a bottle of Glenlivet with unexpected ghosts, and helps a friend prepare for fatherhood, he confronts his lifelong questions about spirituality, mortality, and his own self-worth. He ultimately rediscovers a profound appreciation for his work, his family, and the beauty of everyday life--and provides a glorious lesson for us all.
Amazon.com Review
Jon Katz couldn't afford a country house--his wife didn't wanthim to buy it; his career looked like it was going off track; and hisdaughter was about to leave home for college. But when he saw the viewfrom a decrepit little cabin in the mountains, near Cambridge, NewYork, he knew he had to have the place. So, against all rationalimpulses, he bought the cabin and used it as a summer retreat. He readThomas Merton, helped his best friend prepare to be a father, deepenedhis relationship with his dog, and wrote a book about the spiritualwisdom that came to him in everyday life. Running to the Mountain:A Journey of Faith and Change includes some particularly elegantand urgent readings of Merton, whose central concerns Katz summarizesas well as anyone has:

Merton was obsessed with a central issue for ourtime--figuring out how to live, trying to forge a life of balance, purpose and meaning. I've grown to share his obsession, his beliefthat life demands a lot of tinkering, and requires people to givebirth to themselves not just once, but over and over.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wit, wisdom and a good read
A nice blend of inspiration, insight and entertainment. As a fellow 50+ soul searcher I really enjoyed Mr. Katz's wise look at mid-life challenges and opportunities. Thanks for this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Running to the Mountain
This is a thoughtful, intelligently written book which describes, in often comedic detail, one man's personal search for balance between spirituality & creative fulfillment, a thirst for solitude and need for the human touch within the confines of personal responsibility and accountability.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read
My 28 year old niece read this book, liked it , and bought me one to read.I'm 62 and I liked it a lot.So...I guess it appeals to all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth Your Time
I read this book some time ago, I believe after hearing the author interviewed on the radio. Having dealt with my father's recent passing, and now that I'm approaching forty myself, the book means a lot more to me now than it did upon first reading. Other reviewers have criticized Katz as being whiny-who among us wouldn't want to be living the high life as a TV producer? Who among us wouldn't want to buy a rural getaway and leave the soccer games and grocery store trips to our spouse? All that is true, and, as Katz would probably admit, fair.

But the book is more than that-Katz pretty frankly admits that, according to nearly anyone's standards, he's got it made. But life is lived subjectively-and each of us has to find our own truth-our own equilibrium point to allow us to go on living. This is a beautiful book, (even if the references to a dial up modem seem dusty at this point, only 10 years or so after writing) and well worth your time, if you're struggling to keep your head above water.

1-0 out of 5 stars Garbage and dishonest writing
This author is becoming well known for his dishonest and insincere tugging at the heart strings of dog owners and dog book buyers. Don't buy it and don't read it. The way I see it, he owes me a refund. ... Read more

Only one page very interesting, the rest of the book it's about exercise for the pose method, if it's that you want get it. But you will not learn pose method only with that booklet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much needed companion
I did not intially buy this, as I read reviews here stating that it came with the DVD. I bought the DVD new, and had it didn't have one.. so I ordered it. Very helpful in going along with the video.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Companion
In my continuous search for ways to keep on running while the body slowly deteriorates, I came across this book. It is a much deeper, scientific look into more of the areas that I first found in ChiRunning (although perhaps the Romanov techniques predate ChiRunning) .

This is a very easy to read book with scads of exercises and supporting activities such as flexibility and strength building activites. It is very well researched applied science and is being used many high perfromance coaches and their athletes.

The big eye opener for me was how he takes the forward lean, relaxed foot approach of ChiRunning much further along the entire foot and up the leg. Example, he stresses how you want to have minimal heel lift, landing on the ball of the foor, with minimal push off , so that your body does not rise and fall as you run. His practise activities really show you how to get gravity working for you with running. Again, it comes down to attention to detail in the execution. My natural run has become even easier, when I thought I could not get it any easier. If you take your running seriously this is a great resource for you. See [...]

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this IF you also buy his DVD because it is included with DVD
I made the mistake of buying both so had to return. Just thought somebody needed to point out that the DVD includes the companion drill book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential Item Maybe
This little book would be an essential item should you decide to get the companion video. If you get the DVD though its included in the packaging so you don't need to get it (like I did).

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for people who are planning on becoming expats
Besides advocating working illegally if you can't find legitimate work abroad, the book has some good information but is pretty general--mainly of the sell-some-of-your-stuff before you go variety. It's very clear that the book is written only for people who are planning on traveling abroad for some extended period of time, as well as people who are middle-aged or older; there is no info about severing ties to the US. Most of the suggestions are also without the further needed information in the form of resources, agencies, etc. The author's repetitive suggestion of Mexico as a place to live is offensive and pointless, especially if you like in the southwest and are already invaded by Mexicans. Finally, while threre are some quotes from people who have decided to live abroad for a few months to a year, for some reason all of the quotes come from Portugal, Venezuela and Mexico. Seems to me there are thousands of cultures one could travel to but her bias is clearly to get people to these locales. The question is, Why?

2-0 out of 5 stars Superficial and obvious
Although well written and easy to read, there isn't much insight or useful information for someone pondering the issue of retiring outside the country, what the living circumstances might be like, what the alternative countries might be like. Instead, the book gives a chapter called "Personal Packing for Runaways" with advice on what sort of clothes to pack for your exit departure. Well, that would depend on where you are going, your wealth, and many other factors. The book's advice is mainly to pack light. The list includes taking a watch, travel alarm, reading material, sunglasses, and camera. Oh, it advises taking "film" for the camera, whatever that is. Once upon a time there was something called "film" that was used with cameras.

The book focuses mostly on Europe, as the author moved to France and gives advice most suited to those with similar interests, which are different from mine.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Grown-Up's Guide to Running Away From Home
This is a great book to read & use as a reference if you are at a cross-roads in your life, whether personally or professionally, especially if you've ever had the urge to move overseas.
The book addresses ways to accomplish your dream with suggestions on ways to do it whether by working, home exchanges, volunteering, etc. There are also many practical suggestions once you've arrived in your new country.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Slim Guide to the Obvious
There's nothing in this slim, superficial little book you can't discover for yourself in 30 minutes' focused Internet surfing. If you have genuinely never considered even the most basic issues associated with living abroad, and you find value in pronouncements like "Don't buy a fancy car over there" or a list of 800 numbers for overseas airlines, you might get some value from this. If you've traveled overseas with some frequency, know the culture you want to join, and now need practical advice on tax and money management, visa and residency requirements, property ownership rules, etc., this book is more or less useless. The author quotes a couple of immediate-circle friends extensively about their move to Portugal but appears to have done little serious research... admittedly it's difficult to write a guide that covers every country you might move to, but be warned this book is really an example of "once over lightly."

2-0 out of 5 stars You CAN run away...
You CAN run away without buying this book.I did not learn anything that I didn't already know from my own intelligence and common sense.I was intrigued by the idea of chucking it all and starting anew in Europe. I purchased the book and anxiously awaited its arrival. The enthusiasm with which I began reading shortly waned.Do I really need a book to tell me to submit change of address cards to the post office?I kept waiting for the author's secrets to unfold. There are none in this book. If you want to run away from your current life...you need money and courage and language skills.I should write a book !!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Grady serves them all
This volume of Grady Service, Yooper Michigan Conservation Officer, is almost episodic, like a collection of novellas, linked across the 30 years since his very first case. Although it is not at all in flashback form, Heywood has cleverly taken us back to the beginning of Grady's career, long ago before Vol. 1 of his series, three books ago. If you wished, you could read this novel first of all, but then you will want to hold off on reading Part 5, Cold Vengeance, because it is set in 2004, after Grady's intimate relationships have been developed in books 1-3. Grady is a cool, laconic number from the get-go, dedicated to the animals he protects for the Dept. of Natural Resources, one of the most highly politicized parts of state government (and therefore dangerous in its own right).

In this novel, the title term refers not only to boating, but to cars, based on an interesting theory that one's night vision is better if you have never ever used a flashlight. Heywood focuses tightly on one, peculiar, peninsula, with a fascinatingly distinct history of militant independence. He explores the conflict between sport and commercial fishing industries in the perpetually troubled local economy. Grady and his colleagues of various departments are put right in the middle of the fracus, in a battle for survival, let alone actually accomplishing anything lawful. While not making a point of it, there are no winners here.

Note that here is a mystery story, or rather suspense story, without a murder, without a body to be explained! --Perhaps because it is based on real history.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Series
I live in Michigan and have travelled the whole State. So when Heywood mentions the small towns and cities, I can immediately conjure up a picture in my mind. I have also explored many of the back roads and two-tracks in the U.P., His power of description is dead on! I connect immediately.

Even if you took that all away, I still believe the plot lines he develops in the Woods Cop series are every bit as good as any nationally recognized author. For years, I was a Clive Cussler fan, eagerly awaiting each new release in the Dirk Pitt series. Dirk got old and boring. Granted, Grady already is old :) and his adventures never get boring! I have also read some of the other "popular" Michigan mystery writers. Personally, I think Mr. Heywood's style is far more mature and refined.

I could confidently attach this review to any one of the books in the series. They are all superb. Thank you Mr. Heywood!

5-0 out of 5 stars Running Dark
I have read all of Joseph Heywood's books. His Wood Cop series are mesmerizing, great reads all of them, can't put them down till I finish.

Having lived in the U.P. for over 3 decades his stories hit home from what we hear up here concerning hunting rights, land, the economics etc.Loving the outdoors one can appreciate all the obvious research Heywood has put into each novel. His words are true, the kinds of poaching he writes about goes on continually. Each of his Wood Cop series has a different kind of poaching. The characters are a bit scary, lawless, lacking morals, also lacking any kind of respect for man, woman or beast, they are all here in the U.P. Hope to see a movie down the road sometime in the future.
The characters are true to form.Their speech, which originates from the Finnish population here is in fact exactly how the old timers speak. The culture is exactly as he describes it to be among people who have lived up here is this sometimes politically forgotten land. However amongst the law abiding population you will hear people call this "God's country"We love our outdoors, wide open spaces, the thick brush, miles and miles between towns, and even our wetlands. Most people struggle to survive, but would not leave, you have to be a hardy sort to maintain here.Heywood describes his major and minor characters in these terms. He is right on the money writing about the law abiding citizens up here.We are a caring people.

At the end of Running Dark Heywood has a heartfelt description and explanation of how and why he writes about his seemingly chosen second home.It has been a pleasure to read about his main character Grady Service who dedicated his heart mind and soul to his homeland and carries on his fathers tradition of being a Wood Cop.Heywood is probably writing some of himself into these characters, the good ones that is!

I'll be waiting for Wood Cop #5

Reviewed by Lorraine Robins for Reader Views (8/06)

The author takes us to the beginning of Grady Service's career as a DNR officer. Grady is following in his father's footsteps, as he had worked for the DNR his entire career. The book is set in the mid 1970's.

Grady's marriage crumbles very quickly after he becomes a DNR officer. His wife does not understand why Grady would care about the Department of Natural Resources. But it is all Grady Service has ever wanted to do.

The author's main point was to have the reader experience what Grady Service goes through, trying to enforce the law against poaching, over fishing, and his struggle to enforce the limits of the law. The book has some excitement and colorful characters.

Personally, I did not find this book very captivating. I grew up in Michigan and am familiar with the Upper Peninsula. This is where the book is set. The people in that area do speak with a sort of unique accent--not exactly Canadian, but not really Midwestern. I did not care for the way the author seemed to over-emphasize how everyone was speaking in this accent. I don't know if it was supposed to be humorous, but it was lost on me.I also felt the book dragged and did not grab my interest. I had a hard time getting though it.

Based on the way this book was written, I believe it would appeal more to men than women. There was a lot of tough, macho type language and behavior in the book which seems more suited for men. It did not suit me.

A well done story with characters that feel real. The ending surprises in several ways that ring true. I'm looking for more by the author. ... Read more

Our women's bible study was used to reading a lot of the bible. This study actually draws references from many sources, so you really have a lot to think about. And a lot of questions to ponder. We really like it, and would recommend it to any group that is close-knit and completely open and honest. No more than 6 in the group, or you'll be there all day. If you want to read bible text and analyze it, this is not for you.And you must be really committed to making it each week.Give yourself a good 2 hours for discussion due to the amount of questions, and so each person has time to share their feelings and experiences.

4-0 out of 5 stars contemporary, relevant
The Bible Study is contemporary and relevant to women at all stages of their spiritual journey. The passages from the Message printed within the chapter is helpful.I think the only improvement would be more space to answer the questions on each page.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect book for today's busy women!!!
A group of 5 ladies and myself are reading this book right now. What a blessing it has been! The list of women I want to give it to just keeps growing. It is a must if you're constantly on the go and looking for a way to just settle down! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great and on time!
it was in great conditions and was quickly delivered. all I expect when buying a book. thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book from the best coach
To those who say his theories are outdated, show me the results where Americans pounding the intervals or following a Daniels type plan are beating those like the Kenyans and the Japanese marathoners and Paula Radcliffe who train much more like Lydiard suggests. It's not a coincidence that Deena Kastor and Meb Keflezighi became the first two Americans to win Olympic marathon medals in 20 years. They are also two of the few Americans who follow a Lydiard-based training philosophy. The Kenyans do not train at LT pace all the time. Anyone who knows how they train knows that they train much like Lydiard suggests.

Yes, his writings are hard to read. He has a great mind when it comes to running technique but not quite so great when it comes to writing style. However, the wealth of wisdom in his writings is worth working yourself through the less than spectacular writing style if you are interested in racing performance.

5-0 out of 5 stars best distance coach ever
He's trained 18 olympians, has taken years of physiology, and has been perfecting his programs since the 60's.This is definitely the book to get.I was one of the people who didn't know what the training did, so I got fired up and hammered it every day.Thankfully, I was able to learn about Lydiard and find a real way to train. He explains all of the physiology behind running so you have a revamped knowledge and know what to do instead of training blindly.Definitely a must have.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quaint
My first thoughts were - "This is a book?"This is the most unprofessional job I have ever seen. The forward is one the most laughable English translations I have ever seen printed. As for the body of the text, it is clearly a compilation of various things Lydiard wrote over the years. The editors took all this different stuff, threw it together, and called it a book. The end has some charts sitting around with absolutely no explanation. The book repeats itself a lot, and there is a long section written exclusively about rugby.Apparently Lydiard once adapted his training ideas to rugby, and the resulting article was thrown into the book as a "bonus" or something.

That aside, it is fun to read some old Lydiard stuff. This book takes me way back to the glory days of the running boom, to Frank Shorter and Bill Rodgers running in their heydays, which is funny since I was born in 1984.Always nice to hear that the reason "the negroid" is beating me is that he can lift his knees while leaning forward.Thousands of people have been trying for years to find out why the East Africans are so dominant, and here Lydiard had it all figured out years ago!

Joking aside, this is a decent book about training.Lydiard is not a proponent of Long Slow Distance. He supports Long Steady Distance. His focus on high mileage and basic speed is key. Many well-informed people believe that if Americans would spend more time developing their aerobic bases and less time on the track doing hard intervals, they would run much faster.I have found this to be true in my own running.

One thing I would have liked is a better description of the hill-bounding exercises.Lydiard mentions that you should do bounding exercises up a hill, but he doesn't go into the detail of exactly what this bounding should look like. That's my only true complaint.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh please!
If Lydiard is "outdated" as you sugest, then how do you explain this:

Mark Wetmore(Colorado @ Boulder - Buffaloes) uses a slightly modified version of Ludiard's training (so that his athletes are able to peak three times a year). They obviously have had much success. ... Read more

This book had insights for setting up for contractors, that the other books or tutorial did not. This book does not have it all, but is a big help. There is still a great void inthe books that I have looked at, dealing with issues contractors face, such as looking at job costs versus budget for a given month, or charging time to a project as an owner, and therefore a billable rate, or more flexibility in estimates. I am still trying to figure what this program will & will NOT do for me.

Product Description
A New York Times best-seller, and named by the National Geographic Society as one of the "One Hundred Best Adventure Books Ever Written," "Running the Amazon" is writer Joe Kane's eyewitness account of the first source-to-sea navigation of the world's mightiest river--a six-month, 4,200 mile journey by foot, whitewater raft, and sea kayak. The expedition began in 1985, when a hand-picked team of international adventurers climbed to the source of the Amazon, a trickle of glacial snowmelt above 17,000 in the southern Peruvian Andes. From there, the trip entails kayaking through one of the nastiest white-water canyons on the planet, a stretch of water that had previously claimed the lives or quickly halted the plans of all who had attempted to conquer it; navigating a two-mile-deep, unmapped gorge known as "The Acobamba Abyss"; sneaking through the "Red Zone," an area closed to foreigners, where the expedition was captured at gunpoint by Shining Path guerrillas; and, finally, paddling to the Atlantic by sea kayak through 3,000 miles of steaming rainforest.

Ten people started the journey; only two reached the sea.Kane was one of them. Hired initially to chronicle the project from dry land, he quickly assumes a more integral role as a much-needed paddler, and as such he is able to provide vivid, first-hand descriptions of the treacherous water encountered. But in many ways the river is the least imposing obstacle to success. Along the way the team is beset by financial difficulties, a crisis of leadership, attacks from armed rebels, and the defection of team members.Kane's account of this six-month ordeal is much more than a travelogue of athletic endeavor--it's a fascinating portrait of the planning, politics, and personal struggles involved in mounting a modern-day expedition through a vast expanse of largely uncharted territory.Amazon.com Review
In 1985 a team of hand-picked adventurers, including writerJoe Kane, embarked on a journey that would take them to the remoteheadwaters of the Amazon Basin. But that was just the beginning of thetrip. Their goal: to navigate the world's longest river from source tomouth, a feat never before recorded.

After reaching (via a goattrail) a glacial trickle above 17,000 feet--debatably the farthestsource of the Amazon--the team descends to a point where kayaks can bedeployed. From there the trip entails kayaking through one of thenastiest white-water canyons on the planet, a stretch of water thathas previously claimed the lives or quickly halted the plans of allwho attempted to conquer it; navigating an unmapped gorge knownaffectionately as the Abyss; sneaking through the "RedZone," an area closed to foreigners and occupied by the notoriousShining Path rebels; and, finally, paddling to the Atlantic by sea kayak through 3,000miles of hot jungle.

4-0 out of 5 stars Modern day adventure
I enjoyed this book & felt I learned a lot about the heart of South America - mainly Peru, Columbia & Brazil. If you are into white-water sports then there is no doubt this is a 5 star book. I enjoyed it but to me it was a good 4 star book. I found the first half of the book dragged a little more, it was more about getting the expedition started, some bickering amongst team members & making slow progress in the incredibly dangerous terrain of Peru.

In the second half of the book the core team remains & the story does a better job of explaining the countryside (riverside) & the interesting people they meet along the way. Joe & his partner's earned their fame on this adventure - 6 months of abusing yourself physically & mentally. One thing Joe Kane does a little better than most is takes a couple pages at the end & tells you where most of the people from the story end up in later years - I wish most authors would do that. If you like Canoe / Kayaking stories don't miss this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOMEBOOK!I'D RATE IT MORE THAN A 5 IF I COULD!
I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. This is not the type of book I generally read but I found it after I searched for a book on the Amazon and an authentic book on what it's like to be there.

I'm almost done with the book, and it's one I don't want to put down, and certainly don't want to end. It's been very real, has made me feel what it was like to be on a real Amazon adventure.

5-0 out of 5 stars The real story
Kane's book is the masterpiece with only truly authentic record of that glorious first trip.It is very compelling reading especially for those who have rafted or have a sense of adventure.Real pioneering adventure.Ben Kozel's rates a close second but they did not raft the Abyss.Who can blame them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good good good
One of the top adventure books I have read.Great descriptions of whitewater hell as well as political manueverings in the group.Best kayaking book yet.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Classic in adventure writing
Even though this adventure happened over 20 years ago, it's still worth a read.

Like other reviewers have already stated, this was a very ill-matched expedition. The wrong people were leaders. There was poor and no planning and I suspect, mismanagement of the money each participant had paid.(Kane paid $7000).The potpouri of participants just goes to show that you can't conduct a river expedition for exploration, adventure, excitement, recording, documenting and science. It's just too much to focus on at once when the river provides for all the dangers one could imagine. The Lewis and Clark expedition realized the same thing 180 years earlier:it's impossible to both chart a new river and conduct science projects AND record the journey AND ward off "savages" all at the same time. The Roosevelt expedition wasn't any luckier.

Kane does an excellent job describing the journey, from the hike up to the Amazon source to the day-to-day river adventures.Scenes of black outs after near-drowning experiences are heart-pounding.Visuals of the river as just as descriptive.Arguments between the Alpha members allow for personal opinion of each participant. This story is not just about the six months of paddling and rafting, but also about the human-to-human conflicts of very different people and how they interact in and after crisis after crisis after crisis.

The writing is rock solid. Each chapter is a prelude to the next. This is my second read of the Amazon (the previous one was "The River of Doubt" about Theodore Roosevelt's trip down the Amazon in 1913) and I am convinced that the Amazon and its tributaries are not worth the agony and defeat that whitewater thrill seekers want.I have no desire to visit the Amazon, no desire to experience the water in any way. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great way to add to your enjoyment of running
This is such a thoughtful book in so many ways that it is difficult for me to express its value. If I were a writer I might be able to convey the richness that Dr. Kay's insight has added to my running time and even into my overall enjoyment of life. Take the time to read this little book and use Dr. Kay's ideas to expand your depth of thinking, and sensing your spirituality as you run. The more I practice his suggestions, the more I appreciate what already was a very enjoyable sport. And since the author is a full time college professor, he knows how to teach, which makes it simple and pleasant to learn as we go. When running is more fun and more rewarding mentally and spiritually it becomes easier to do and the benefits of improved health of body and mind are just wonderful extras.
I hope I can encourage you to read this terrific book and I believe that the same kind of richness and satisfaction I experience will be added to your spiritual/running life as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is great!
I recently bought and read this book and I think it is great! It brings together two important parts of us as human beings--the physical and the spiritual. The author is an experienced runner himself and is also a theologian. Through this book he also shows that he is a great teacher. The book is well written. It is easy to read, but each paragraph has a lot of really interesting material and he includes questions to think about on your next run. So I would say this book is both practical and profound. All in all I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is a runner and who is interested in exploring the spiritual side of life. ... Read more

"You don't have to run fast to be a real runner!"

John Bingham, "the patron saint of the back of the pack," commands "The Penguin Brigade"-- those thousands of dedicated runners who have learned that the greatest joy in their sport comes not from how fast they go or how thin they become, but from simply having the courage to take the first step.

Now Bingham shares the wisdom that took him from couch potato to columnist for Runner's World magazine. No Need for Speed explores both the why and the how of running for the rest of us. With information both practical (how to find the right running shoes for you, when to enter a race, what to eat before a run) and inspirational (focus on where you are instead of where you want to be, accepting the body you have, the beauty of being realistic about goals), Bingham extends a trusted hand and expert advice to beginners and veterans alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars new runner great book
I just started running this year, and was looking fora good book to teach me things about running from a beginners perspective and then on to more advanced levels. This book delivers all of that and more. It is well written and makes a lot of sense.

3-0 out of 5 stars For me, didn't live up to the hype
I've been running a grand total of 8 weeks, following a plan from Runner's World. I've stumbled upon John Bingham's column there and thought "No Need for Speed" would be fabulous to read for me, a slow beginning runner.

There's some funny stuff in there, and it's a fast, engaging read. I picked it up from the library last night and read it in a couple of hours. But not only is it geared for beginners, it's geared to beginners who've done little to no research on starting to run and who may have not even bought a pair of running shoes. If you're that kind of runner, then I definitely recommend this book with 5 stars!

But what he touts as info on what and when to eat are more like general discussion on needing to change your perspective on food rather than helpful guidelines as to how to actually change bad habits. Good change begets good change is kind of the gist of it, but even he doesn't lay that out that simply.

There was some good reminders about patience, to remind me to slow down and take joy in the running I'm doing rather than being frustrated by not yet being the runner I want to be. It actually convinced me NOT to run this morning, but to crosstrain instead and give one ever-so-slightly aching knee a rest. But since I've been doing my research about how to run for over 2 months, this book wasn't as helpful to me, so I can't rave about it the way so many have.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Tips From a Guy With a Sense of Humor
I'm a beginning runner just ending my 5th week of training. When I started out, I picked up a lot of literature on the topic to learn new things that may help me progress. "No Need for Speed" was one of those items.

The author has a very laid back writing style that I found appealing. He also has a sense of humor and knows how to laugh at himself while giving helpful advice to others. I found it amusing how he refers to himself as a "penguin" because they waddle when they try to go fast.

I could really relate to his story about how he used to be unhealthy, overweight, smoking two packs of cigarettes a day, and didn't even like the thought of exercising, let alone going out and doing it. He shared how he got into walking, biking, and then running, which led to 5Ks and marathons.

He shares stories of his times trying to complete races but having to stop midway through because of an injury. He was embarrassed to have to stop until he met with the others who had to stop as well and they cheered at him for being smart enough to quit before he caused a permanent injury that may end his running career. He uses this background to show the reader it's okay to stop when you're feeling pain. You don't have to push yourself through it. He uses his personal stories for background a lot to illustrate a point he wants to make, and I think it really adds character to this book.

He gives a lot of good advice that people should take to heart, such as accepting and enjoying the body you have now, not the one you're aiming for in your mind. He says to enjoy where you arein your progress rather than focus on where you want to be. That sort of thing.

John Bingham is a very smart, humorous, and insightful person. I recommend his book to anyone who's interested in getting into running but not sure where to start or if they'd even be any good at it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great and positive guide for a novice runner.
This is an oustanding book for beginner runners. I hated running but it is the simplest excersise to do. I have been using advice in the book for the past three weeks and everything going great. The advice is common sence approach to running that helps you build a good running base and psychological base for longer distance running. The book is filled with great motivation to get you out and running and it is lite in programs because the author feels you should build up a base at your own pace.Overall an excellet book for people not used to running but ready to try.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners
Fun to read and certainly going to the point. No Need For Speed is a guide not to rush into running and taking it easy. It makes you understand the statement about everybody that ends a marathon is a winner. ... Read more

This book, addresses a most critical area missing in the lives of many believers.Through interaction with thousands of committed Christians and missionaries over the last decade, I have seen the joy of many new and also mature believers as they received personal, real-time guidance, comfort and encouragement directly from their Father for the first time.Had I been able to read this book decades ago, my walk with the Lord would likely have grown closer more quickly.
Dr. Lee's book should benefit a wide range of potential readers, from young to mature; both in age, theological training and spiritual maturity. He does this by using personal experiences with his family; stories expressed in an informal style; and occasionally some rather sophisticated, yet relevant, doctrinal discussions. The book arrived fast and it was in great condition, like it was described on the site.

    Thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Regiments for First-Time Runners Looking to Get Fit!
For me, this book worked wonders! Running a marathon was always a personal goal of mine, but not being naturally athletically inclined, I couldn't run a single mile, let alone 26.2 when I committed to running the 2008 Chicago Marathon. 26 weeks out, I started with the 10 week "learn to run" program where you start out at almost nothing, alternating between running and walking for 2 minutes each. Long story short, with the help of this book, I went from not being able to run PERIOD to finishing the Chicago Marathon!

4-0 out of 5 stars As the title suggests - for Beginners
If you've read nothing else about running, this is a good a place as any to start. If you've read two other books about running, the information provided will not be for you.

Where it got its four stars from me was in the training schedule.Although for beginners, you'll find plans in here for anyone wanting a 2:50 marathon finish time. You rarely see that in most beginner books.

I bought it because the price was right ($1.83) but think I'd pay the $10+ Amazon offers if I had to.You'll read it in less than an hour but will spend plenty of time applying the training.

I intend to do so for an upcoming marathon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good little book
This is a solid, yet brief, introduction to long distance running. Their are good training programs inside for all distances from 5k to ultra-marathon. The focus of the training guides is more on time than on distance.

Another good book for those interested in long distance is the Non-runner's guide to marathon trainer. Good mental tips to keep yourself going.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read, ample information for a beginner
I have been following 2 of the 6 training programmes in this book. The Level 1 programme is ideal for novices who are looking to get into running.Following the Level 2 programme I ran a 5k race within 6 weeks of starting training and was surprised at how well I did. After a one year hiatus from running due to an unrelated injury, I am looking forward to entering my 2nd 5k race in a few weeks. If you follow the training programmes in this book you will get excellent results.

Besides, the training programmes the book is filled with tips that go into as much detail as necessary for a novice runner.Topics include, diet, clothing and injuries. I feel that the upper level programmes lack the detail of those in the lower level. ... Read more

"I am just one of many who experienced life on a submarine during World War II. Silent Running is a story sincerely told—free of any revisionism or cynicism—and I commend Vice Admiral Calvert for sharing this dramatic personal account of that difficult and exciting time." —President George Bush

"I believe it is the best personal account yet written on U.S. submarine operations in the Second World War. [Calvert] writes with lucidity and a rare candor. We get an extraordinary sense of what it was like, feeling the tensions and emotions, sharing the successes and disappointments, ... This is a true story with teal people, always gripping and sometimes tender. It is exciting to read and hard to put down. —J. L. Holloway, Admiral, USN (Ret.) "I knew Jim Calvert Throughout the war, and in this book he has told the submarine story in a way that catches the flavor and tang of the real thing. This is the way it really was." —Frederick B. Warder, Rear Admiral, USN (Ret.) Legendary W.W. II skipper of the Seawolf. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A solid read on submarine life
This book was a great read on the pressures and adventures of submarine life in World War 2.

Although the last chapter or two trailed off a bit, the book on the whole was a blend of adventure and thrills - educating the reader to a few 'truths' of World War 2 submarine life that Hollywood has chosen to ignore (like what really happens when a depth charge attack takes place).

Thoroughly recommended and well done to the author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely fabulous book
This is a great story about a WWII sub. This reads better than any fiction book taking place on a sub could ever accomplish.Great story about a single person in a big war. I highly recommend the book for anyone interested in WWII, naval history or subs.Actually, I recommend it to anyone interested in history. It is not too often that we can get such a vivid first hand account of these events.

4-0 out of 5 stars A REAL LIFE SUBMARINE STORY
Silent Running: My Years on a World War II Attack Submarine, by James F. Calvert, Vice Admiral, USN (Ret.), chronicles the nine battle patrols of the USS Jack during World War II. And he does a splendid job of it.

One thing I especially like about this book is that it's not all about the battles. Although, there is plenty of hair-raising submarine action to keep you turning the pages, the book also takes a candid look at not only James Calvert, who was just a young ensign at the time, but also the captain and the rest of the crew. Calvert doesn't hold any punches either. He honestly describes his fears and emotions. And I have read enough submarine books to believe that being hold up in a long steel tube a few hundred feet down in the dark ocean while the bad guys drop depth charges on your head has got to test the mental strength of any man. But James survived it all and rose up through the ranks from an expert Torpedo Data Computer operator to the Executive Officer of the USS Jack.

Now I normally don't like romance mixed in with my submarine action, but in this case, I made an exception. Going along with the author's candid honesty, he described how he allowed himself to become romantically involved with a young Australian woman, even though he had a loving wife and family waiting from him back in the States. Not good by any standard, but understandable considering the harrowing and often depth-defying missions the USS Jack undertook in its patrol area in the China Sea. Each patrol could have been his last, so all in all, a little romantic diversion is certainly not anything to get in an uproar about. The author does claim, however that his feelings for the young woman hardly went past that hand holding stage. Okay.

Then, of course, there was the famous American torpedo problem to deal with. The US Jack, just like a host of other US submarines, suffered the absolute despair and futility of quietly sneaking up on a dangerous enemy ship, carefully plotting a target solution, firing its torpedoes and then listening in horror as they exploded prematurely; and then, having to go deep and run like heck as the enemy destroyers came charging through the water with hate in their eyes, and American blood in their sights. Thank goodness we finally fixed that problem.

From beginning to end, I thoroughly enjoyed Silent Running.

5-0 out of 5 stars WWII action at it's best
This book is a real page turner. I couldn't put it down. Calvert really pulls you into the action. I picked up this book after reading "The Terrible hours" and found that I enjoyed reading about submarines. I've also just started playing "Silent Hunter III" and wanted to delve into the WWII submarine environment. This books definitely puts right along-side Calvert. I really enjoyed the growth that the book follows as Calvert graduates from the Naval Academy, gets assigned to a new submarine as it is being contructed. His writing style that takes you from a young green officer to an experienced submarine warrior is a very nice touch. This really portrays the building of his character. After reading about Swede Momsen and James Calvert, I am ready to start building a WWII submarine library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I'll echo much of what has already been written. This book is an excellent account of one man's experience with WW2 submarine operations. The author made it to the level of executive officer on a sub by the end of the war (and went on to even more interesting events as told in his other book "Surface at the Pole").

The author writes clearly, interestingly, and honestly. The author covers most of his patrols (of nine if I remember correctly) in detail and even some of his personal events while on shore. He covers everything from the horror of being depth charged to the boredom and tedium of patrol.

Overall the author provides an interesting and enlightening account of US Submarine operations and what it was like to serve on a US submarine in WW2. ... Read more

He's a mogul whose empire at one point included the Mirage, the Golden Nugget, and Treasure Island. But how did he gain and wield his tremendous power in Nevada? When this biography, written by a local reporter, was first released in 1995, Steve Wynn brought suit against its original publisher and forced him into bankruptcy. Now available in paperback, the inside story of the biggest phenomenon to roil Las Vegas since Hoover Dam gives readers an intimate glimpse at the real business that's conducted beyond the gaming tables. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars good shape
book was in good condition...book was very good but seemed like a hit piece on steve wynn.

3-0 out of 5 stars "Casinos Are Not Churches..."
This biography of Steve Wynn is actually a 300-page newspaper article finding fault with him in every way possible. While some of the detail is interesting, the author's blatant dislike of his subject is so obvious that it casts doubt on whether much of the writing is even factual.Perhaps this reader is jaded, after years of analyzing the gaming business as an investor, but Steve Wynn seems squeaky clean compared to the usual gangsters, skimmers, and scammers in Vegas.

Steve Wynn is the "Casino King of Las Vegas."Common sense tells us that he didn't rise in the gambling business by being a saint.Nowhere in the book, however, does the author make a strong case that Steve Wynn was either financed by, or in cahoots with gangsters.A money launderer for the mob attempted to launder some money through the Golden Nugget Atlantic City.Known gangsters have even gambled at Wynn-owned casinos. Is this a surprise?Wynn has a lot of political pull in Vegas, lives an opulent lifestyle, and has a temper.Doesn't this describe almost every CEO today?

Steve Wynn got help from bankers in Las Vegas, and Michael Milken, junk bond king, to finance his casinos. The author makes this sound nefarious, while at the same time admitting that 80% of new casino development in the 90s was done by junk bonds. The author does admit that Steve Wynn pays his employees lavishly and has the lowest turnover on the Strip.

Despite the slanted approach to his subject, this book is still interesting to anyone interested in knowing more about the casino business and one of its most colorful characters, Steve Wynn.

Is Steve Wynn really controlled by the mob?The author tries to make the case - and fails. My favorite passage in the book is Wynn's response to charges that the Golden Nugget allowed a gangster to launder money through their casino. In the process of trying to exchange small bills to big bills, Castelbuono lost $400,000 of the $1.2 million he was supposed to "launder" at the Baccarat tables.

Wynn said: " Castelbuono's alleged intention was to violate the law in a conspiracy to hide and send out of the country the proceeds of illegal narcotics trade. The Golden Nugget's intention was to win his money and it did."

Perhaps Steve Wynn sums up his own life the best when he said:

"Casinos are not churches or towers of theological construction. They are businesses."

5-0 out of 5 stars RUNNING SCARED
THIS AUTHOR DESERVES A BIG PRIZE. I ENJOYED THE WRITERS SYTLE. THIS BOOK GETS TO ITS SUBJECT MATTER FAST WITHOUT FLUFFY FANCY EXAGGERATION. THIS BOK IS COMPLELLING. THE READER WILL WANT TO CONTINUE READING ...I ACTUALLY WANTED THE BOOK TO NEVER END.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Perspective of Las Vegas' Casino King
Las Vegas native John L. Smith provides an interesting perspective of the antics of Casino King, Steve Winn; a man who certainly has a shady past as well as some profound character flaws.Big deal; who doesn't have a few skeletons in their closet?

Wynn also has a charismatically savvy approach to running his empire and had to be very tough minded and pragmatic to even get the ball rolling; lost behind the negative bias the author has against this complex power broker, is the fact the guy had to have something going for him to build an empire like Wynn was able to construct. Were his ethics lacking? No doubt.Did he have vision and courage that very few could even dream about possessing?Certainly.

Smith does a remarkable job of researching the life and times of Steve Winn, but I think a more balanced approach to presenting the facts would've made the book even more compelling. The reader doesn't need to hear the author's personal spin on the guy he clearly despises.Perhaps he felt the need to sensationalize the reporting in order to sell more books. It's still a very good book; it would've been a great book if Smith could've presented the facts without offering his overly pious opinion about the subject. It almost made me want to root for Wynn as an "underdog".

I'll give him credit for building an empire worth writing a book about.

5-0 out of 5 stars The True King of Las Vegas Finally Revealed
What a great book that finally uncovers the truth behind the self proclaimed King of Vegas. If you're looking for a book that tells how Wynn blatantly leveraged the Mob to start his rise to billions and then repaid the favor with insider stock trades that would make Enron executives blush, this is the book for you.If you're looking for the book that tells how Wynn uses political bullying to get his way, this is the book for you. If you're looking for the book that tells how he mismanged the Mirage Group to finance his personal lifestyle to where it was bought out for pennies on the dollar, this is the book for you.

If you're a naive minion who beleives Wynn's marketing spin, look elsewhere. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading From The Distance Guru
The theories of Arthur Lydiard are essential reading for runners at all age levels and abilities.

His use of base (endurance) training, followed by phase work of strength, anaerobic and anaerobic-taper is geared to peaking a runner for maximum performance in a major event.

But it's through the endurance training phase where he may be most famous on the roads and trails; it set a foundation which created the running "boom" in the 1970s in the United States and popularized the sport in other nations as a means to achieve fitness.

Lydiard is a coaching icon and his theories will live on as long as a runner is tying the shoe laces and getting ready for a distance jaunt.

This book is a really good refresher for the business side of construction.I read it at least once a year for good measure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for starting a construction company
Most people who start construction companies start out as construction workers who get an opportunity. They are often brilliant at building, but lack training in the business aspect of running a company. My husband and I started a construction firm, he has 15 years experience in construction and I have plenty of business experience.Even with all that we knew between us, there were still huge gray areas in our knowledge base.Because I am an avid reader, I ordered about 15 different books on starting up and running a construction business. Some are wonderful, some are garbage...

This book is helpful in that it really explains the business end of the construction industry.Though this won't tell you how to build a house or a hotel... it will tell you the logistics of bidding, tracking expenses, labor costs, time sheets, draws, and all kinds of other things the those not familiar with the industry might have problems with the first go round. It helps you to figure out all of the little things that you might forget when trying to determine "if I do the job for X will I make any money?"The book is quite colorful and has excellent graphs, drawings and pictures to really bring to light what they are explaining to you.

If you are considering either starting a construction company, or trying to move up in one... I highly recommend this book.
