Product Description
Hockey is played faster every year. Players are bigger, stronger, faster, and more skilled than ever. Those who can’t maintain the pace have little chance of making it at the higher levels.

Laura Stamm’s Power Skating, Third Edition will help you develop explosive speed with Stamm’s proven techniques that have helped thousands of skaters at all levels of the game become great skaters. It also provides you with practice drills that will help you hone and transfer that speed to game situations.

Laura Stamm has taught the Los Angeles Kings, the New York Rangers, the New York Islanders, the New Jersey Devils, and other teams around the world have employed her Power Skating System as well. Thousands of amateur and pro players—including many NHL stars—learned directly from Stamm how to increase their speed, ability, and efficiency on the ice.

In this updated edition of her popular power skating book, Stamm introduces additional coverage of the topics most important to today’s hockey coaches and players. She explains everything from how to select proper skates and equipment for superior skating to all the critical components of explosive skating:

  • Balance for stability and speed
  • Explosiveness through greater force application
  • Starts for a step advantage on the opposition
  • Forward stride for a more aggressive attack
  • Backward stride for mobility on defense
  • Crossovers for split-second change of direction
  • Stops for being able to halt on a dime
  • Turns and transitions for multi-directional moves
  • Agility for maximum coverage of the ice
  • Training for faster and more powerful skating

Nearly 300 drawings and photographs illustrate skating skills from the basic to the complex. And for each maneuver you’ll also find a detailed explanation of how to perform the skill, plus proven drills and exercises to help you practice that maneuver. The exercises progress from the simplest to the most difficult and include special pointers for coaches.

Every great hockey player skates powerfully and is able to get in position to make the key play. Laura Stamm’s Power Skating will give you that explosive edge on the competition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book taught me how to skate.
When I first started playing competitive hockey 10 years ago, I didn't know how to skate.I bought this book and learned the physics of skating. After 6 weeks of training on inline skates and at the ice rink my skating was good.During the last game of hockey that year, I remember I chased the other team's best player from his end of the rink to mine and knocked the puck off his stick.I skated to the bench for a line change and one of the guys who hadn't seen me since I started the training said, "Holy! How come you are so fast?". I recommend this to all the guys I play with.I bought the video a few years later, but I think if I had choice of the two, I'd take the book because the book is well written enough that I can visualize what to do.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's all here, the rest is up to you
I have been using this book and the companion DVD for about 18 months. I bought them together after I made the decision to start playing rec league ice hockey at the tender age of 48!What you get out of them is going to depend a lot on what type of learner you are and your motivation. The DVD will appeal to those inclined to the visual, copycat approach. If you prefer to work through the process analytically with descriptive detail, then the book is better than the DVD.I've found them to be excellent complementary learning tools.

There are many paths to success.I have also attended power skating classes and adult hockey camp.A private lesson with a figure skating instructor identified and corrected a posture problem in my backward crossovers. That could have taken months to work out on my own.

The bottom line is that ice skating is an extremely difficult, non-intuitive activity. To get good at it, you simply have to make the commitment of time, energy, and yes money that's required to get out there and practice, practice, practice. This book and other resources can help, but there are no shortcuts or substitutes for lots of hard work on the ice.If you are willing to do this, you will be richly rewarded with superb skating skills that will make a huge difference in games.I am already playing at the intermediate rec league level and enjoying it a bunch.

5-0 out of 5 stars My coach recommended it to me
Laura Stamm's Power Skating was recommended to me by my team and personal skating coach. It covers basics ... in detail!Speed, balance, explosiveness, responsiveness - all depend on the basics underlying your forward and backward stride, including weight distribution, leg extension, edge position, angle, and control, hip position and movement, control of shoulder and torso position, and more.

This book covers the basics you would have drilled into you at any good hockey school or clinic. So if you're wondering why you slip edges, are a fast runner but slow skater, can't quite stop yourself from spinning out of position at times, lose your balance, feel like your upper and lower body aren't working together on the ice, etc. - buy this book and start drilling!

One piece of advice on skates, though. If you've never been fitted by a competent hockey pro shop or at a clinic, go and get it done.Hockey skates aren't shoes or boots and shouldn't fit like them.Wear the wrong skate and you will not only waste your time and money trying to learn to skate properly, you will develop habits you will have to rid yourself of later.Trust me - you are NOT going to be fitted properly at the local sporting goods or department store.Get fitted properly and buy the best skates you can afford.Fitting also addresses more than the skate boot fit.You need someone knowledgeable to help with things like blade type, rocker, and other fitting issues too.

The book and techniques are excellent and the price is cheap.Laura Stamm has been used and endorsed by many pros. You can't go wrong!

5-0 out of 5 stars Crucial resource for developing proper skating technique
At the time of this review, I am 31 years old and preparing for my first season of adult hockey.I had almost zero skating experience (aside from maybe three public skating sessions when I was 12 or so years old) when I decided I wanted to play hockey. Before I started taking skating seriously, I would just go out an mess around on the ice for a half hour at a time. All that did was breed bad habits and frustration. Then, I purchased this book: I can't stress to you just how much the descriptions in this book helped form good skating habits while avoiding/undoing the bad ones.Remember, I am a self-taught skater and by no means perfect, but this book solidifed the fundamentals and spelled out the execution necessary to maximize my power. In just three months of practice patterned after the excercises in this book, I feel like a totally different individual than the unbalanced, directionless clown I was when I started out.Consider this book a must-read if you're looking to get into hockey.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book
You must buy it if you found Laura's DVD is the best skating instructional DVD. ... Read more

If you want to learn some technique, this book lacks details and is not useful. For beginner to intermediate instruction on in-line skating, I recommend instead the book by Liz Miller "Get Rolling ...", complemented by the one by William Nealy, "Inline! ...".

5-0 out of 5 stars From beginning to advanced skating
This is my favorite book on inline skating. It is loaded with color pictures and the explanations are very simple. There is a section on equipment which even explains cleaning and upgrading equipment. The book begins with First Techniques for the beginner and goes on with chapers like Moving, Improving, Skillful Techniques, The Real World, Specialist Skating, etc.The Moving and Improving chapter covers topics like parallel turns, forward crossover, slalom turns and dynamic striding. Each lesson has clear instructions and suggestions accompanied by numbered color photographs. At the end of each chapter is a section called Troubles that covers each technique taught in the chapter and lists Problems with Reasons and Corrections. This is what makes the book so useful for learning new things. The best thing about this book is how clearly it is written. If you have just learned or want to learn to inline skate get yourself a copy and grow with it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars hmmm....
An adequate and fair history of the art of figure skating from its origins to the present. One aspect I found troubling was the book's committment to viewing the art through the eyes of feminist "gender identity" theory. I'm not sure what an introduction to post modernist feminism contributes to a book about figure skating.
Another shortcoming is the author's occasional fade into modern academic jargon that borders on gibberish. Consider the following gem of a sentence from page 259: "The conflicting codes of both "feminine" objectification and "masculine" agency in the person of the same skater provide a potentially empowering tension in symbolic identification with a position that is neither purely powerless nor purely powerful, blurring the either/or dichotomy of a structialist reading into an androgenous both/and." What is missing here is basic writing skill.

I really bought this book for the picture of Michelle Kwan on the cover, Still I learned a fair amount about the art of figure skatingfrom reading it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Figure skating gets the respect it deserves
_Culture on Ice_ is the first skating book I have bought in more than two years. It is also the first skating book where I actually learned something in every chapter and started to think about skating in ways that hadn't occurred to me.

Even though it's an "academic" book, its contents and message appeal to skating fans universally. The first two chapters are heavy on theory and may present some difficulty for those unfamiliar with academic theories of meaning, but they're worth sloughing through.(I think you could even get away with skipping them if you really can't get through the language.)Chapter three onward should be relatively smooth sailing for any confirmed skating fan with the caveats that the language is academic and the sentences are long.

The research is meticulous, and the chapter notes are full of exciting hidden gems of amazing detail. The technical appendix and suggestions for further reading alone would be worth the cover price for anyone looking to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the sport.

_Culture on Ice_ is successful as a work of theory, a work of history, and an appreciation of all who contribute to figure skating.Kudos to Ellyn Kestnbaum for taking figure skating beyond coffee-table-book status and establishing a framework for future critical analysis of the sport. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely Book
This book is a good, short read. Some of the language and customs may be difficult for a child to understand, but wouldn't take away from the story. The book has just enough little adventures to keep it interesting and keep you reading. The writing is beautiful and includes Lucinda's "diary entries."The characters are fantastic!Lucinda is akin to Anne Shirley in Anne of Green Gables.I had no problem with the portrayals of Lucinda's losses. It's entertaining to think that Lucinda was a "naughty child" as she'd be considered an angel today!

5-0 out of 5 stars An old friend ...
I was thinking about this book for months before I decided to find it again.I read and re-read this when I was growing up.I loved it then and I love it now.

Lucinda Wyman is a tomboy who doesn't fit into the box that her time and place would like to put her in.Her parents' trip to Italy buys her a year of freedom in which to explore 1890's New York on roller skates. The story of Lucinda, the wonderful people she befriends in the amazing city she loves was mesmerizing to me as a kid.I loved Lucinda and could relate to her because I didn't quite fit in, either, and I loved to read and talk to all kinds of people, and I made puppets and put on plays with them and adored The Tempest.I still love just about all of those things (although I don't do puppet shows anymore) and I still love this book with its simple pleasures and enduring tragedies and joy of being alive and free out in the great big wonderful world.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good look at a time past.
This is an absorbing story for young people....with much for a grownup to find important. Not a new book, but fresh.Lucinda learns some hard truths, grows a great deal in her special year.

3-0 out of 5 stars Boring, not exciting
Roller Skates is very boring. I didn't have any interest in it at all. I didn't really want to finish the book, but I had to. I wouldn't suggest this book for kids, but adults might enjoy it more. If you have to read this book, like me, then try to make it more interesting. It takes place in the 1800's, so I think that could be part of the problem. Don't get this book if you're under 13.

3-0 out of 5 stars Boring
I think this is not a good book for kids. It is so boring. I've been reading the reviews that are posted and most kids say it is boring and adults (or at least above 13) say it is okay-good. I say if you are a kid never read this book unless you have to. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I was a terrified beginner until I found it
It really helped me a lot. Bill's drawings are clear and lots of fun as well. A nice piece of work there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quirky, but contains great information!
Yes, this book is full of cartoons and feels totally hippie, but it offers really useful information that other books don't.Nealy explains the physics behind certain skating postures and tells you how speed impacts various movements.Interesting! His enthusiasm and humor are great, once you get used to the non-standard "font" (handwriting). You could read and re-read this book and glean more each time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Inline Skating Review
William Nealy's book is a tough read because he's chosen to present basic instruction with hard-to-sort-out and confusing drawings, hand-sketched caricatures of actual skaters. While his overall comments on basic inline skill sets may be helpful, the myriad cartoon drawings aren't, often times appearing indecipherable.Of course an intermediate-level reader most likely will recognize what's going on, but for a beginner seeking underlying fundamentals--good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars Inline!: Beginning to Intermediate Inline Skating

Fun Book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
An excellent publication. Diagrams are well thought out, giving all the steps required to complete a move along a timeline. The writing style and use of humour in the text and illustrations makes reading and learning fun, and the author really captures the inner thoughts of a beginning skater as he prepares to execute a move, making the reader feel comfortable with trying them. I keep the book with me and review a page or two now before I skate to hone my skills. Thanks for an excellent publication! ... Read more

During the Golden Age of Roller Skating (1937-1959), more than 3,000 roller rinks -- from the homespun to the palatial -- dotted the streets of just about every town in America. Each rink offered its loyal patrons something unique to roller skating -- its own special roller rink sticker! Pasted on skate cases, as well as fanatically traded & collected by individuals & clubs alike, the stickers were more popular than baseball cards to America's more than 10 million roller skaters. This book features over 400 of the best rink stickers, as well as page after page of amazing photographs, postcards, advertisements, programs, & other skating memorabilia to paint a glorious portrait not only of the roller rink's grandest era, but also of America's changing society. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Eight wheels and no brakes.
A tip of the hat to Lou Brooks for making this book such a delight to look at!The subject matter is pretty mundane and in the hands of many other book designers 'Skate Crazy' would just look bland but Mr Brooks knows his stuff. He knows how to select the right photos, handle color panels, overlap graphic images, choose a relevant typeface for headings and all the other little design elements that make each page sparkle and this book has 144 of them in a neat square format.

Although much of the material is similar Brooks has managed to split it into sixteen chapters and write a bit about each subject but the book is essentially visual. The four hundred rink stickers are the main pictorial items and nicely the index in the back is a geographical listing of past rinks across America.Strangely, despite a thorough coverage there are no close-up photos of skates, a page or two from a manufacturer's salesbrochure would have been helpful I think.

'Skate Crazy' is a wonderful bit of nostalgia and if you rolled (or danced) around one of the three thousand rinks across the Nation in the Forties or Fifties you'll really enjoy looking at this book.Just super!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lou Brooks Is On A Roll!
Lou Brooks is one of America's foremost designer-illustrators and his work has appeared in nearly every publication in America at one time or another. SKATE CRAZY doesn't contain many of Lou's masterful illustrations, but it does have his wacky, inventive mark on every page. Illustrators and designers across the globe are going to be drooling over Lou's delectable choices. Beautiful old advertisements, postcards, signs and stickers abound in this book--lovingly restored in many cases by Lou's wife, Clare (also a first-class artist).

But it's not only Lou's colleagues who are lucky to have Lou's jam-packed gem available. His fun, informative writing will delight anyone on your gift list. Buy a copy for creaky old grannie--she probably spent time in her youth on roller skates, mesmerized by the drone of the Hammond organ. Get a copy for the couch potato of your choice--it's time to bring back those halcyon days and hit the rinks again. Roll off those extra rolls! Send a copy to your kid at college--a great way to discover a nearly-forgotten, but once very important American pastime.

This is one hell of a buy, as well. It is crammed to the gills with photos and graphics and will inform and delight everyone who is lucky enough to get a copy.

If I could, I'd give this one 10 stars! Congratulations, Louie!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great trip down memory lane!
This book is a great compilation of skating memorabilia from the 30s, 40s, and 50s.The book is full of photos, ad illustrations, and postcards, but the best part is the stickers from individual rinks - there are over 400 of them! The restored graphics are amazing, and the vintage style will make anyone nostalgic for this era of skating.Anyone interested in art or graphics should take a look at the way Brooks updates the stickers, because he truly has done a fantastic job.

5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific gift - not just for roller skaters
Although this book makes a perfect gift for someone who loves to skate, it's just as good for art students, pop culture buffs, and lovers of quirky, crazy stuff. The infinite variety of roller-skate images is dazzling. "Skate Crazy" belongs on the shelf of every graphic designer. Plus, it's a lot of fun! Some of the old roller-rink photos made me laugh out loud, and the wild assortment of vintage stickers are a joy to look at. I've only been roller skating twice, but I loved this book! ... Excerpt: Inline speed skating is the sport of racing on inline skates (Roller sports) It is often called inline racing by participants. Although it primarily evolved from racing on traditional roller skates, the sport is similar enough to ice speed skating that many competitors are now known to switch between inline and ice speed skating according to the season. An inline speed skate is a specialized shoe version of the inline skate. The boot or shoe is close-fitting, without much padding and usually made of leather and carbonfiber and/or fiberglass composites. For best performance the boot must conform closely to the shape of the foot, so most inline speed skating boots are heat-moldable, which allows the user to re-shape the boots to some extent when heat is applied (by placing the boots in oven at 200 °F (93.3 °C) for 20 minutes after taking off the wheels, frames, and straps/buckles). The frame (sometimes called the chassis or plate) which holds the wheels is made of aircraft-quality aluminum and/or magnesium and usually mounts three, four, or five polyurethane wheels of between 78 mm and 110 mm diameter. Each wheel contains 2 precision bearings with an aluminum spacer. The three wheel frames are used primarily for younger skaters or skater with small feet. Beginning in 2002 through improvements in skate technology, manufacturers began marketing wheels from 84 mm up to 110 mm in diametera noticeable change from nearly a decade of 80 mm wheel size. Over the next several years national and world records were shattered often suggesting this new technology may have been responsible. Bearing sizes have been standardized around the 608 series, though some manufacturers have tried 688 series ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=261635 ... Read more

Product Description
This report was created for strategic planners, international executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for ice skates, roller skates, and skating boots with attached skates. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics that appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for ice skates, roller skates, and skating boots with attached skates for those countries serving the world market via exports or supplying from various countries via imports. I do so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners approaching the world market face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying ice skates, roller skates, and skating boots with attached skates? What is the dollar value of these imports? How much do the imports of ice skates, roller skates, and skating boots with attached skates vary from one country to another? Do exporters serving the world market have similar market shares across the importing countries? Which countries supply the most exports of ice skates, roller skates, and skating boots with attached skates? Which countries are buying their exports? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? ... Read more
