Product Description
Pendleton Round-Up At 100 is a full-color celebration of the first one hundred years of this classic rodeo. Over five years were spent in researching and writing Pendleton Round-Up At 100, to give full justice to its rich and uniquely American history; its importance to cowboys and Indians; and its enduring appeal in Oregon, the West, and the world of rodeo. Illustrated with over 900 photos and illustrations that are drawn from historic collections and family archives, most previously unpublished.

The book's 24 chapters tell the stories of the Round-Up's founding and early years, its discovery by Hollywood, Indian participation from the Round-Up's establishment, the cowgirls' era, legendary performers, the families and volunteer spirit that sustain the annual event and much more. Appendices include complete listings of Round-up winners, Round-Up and Happy Canyon courts, Round-Up presidents, Round-Up Indian chiefs and Round-Up Hall of Fame honorees.

Unique among all rodeos, Pendleton included participants from surrounding Native American tribes--Umatilla, Cayuse, and Walla Walla--in its first year, and every year since. Roberta Conner, head of the Tamastslikt cultural institute, contributes to this volume an important summary of the changing relationship between the tribes and the event.

The 1911 Round-Up was the setting for the legendary showdown between black cowboy, George Fletcher; Indian cowboy Jackson Sundown; and white cowboy John Spain, all competing for the prize saddle. Known as "The Last Go Round" and still controversial, it was the subject of Ken Kesey's final 1994 novel. Hollywood discovered champions such as Yakima Canutt and Mabel Strickland and made them stunt-riders and even stars of silent films. In fact, cowgirls were as important as cowboys in the early years, despite the dangers; it took the tragic death of champion Bonnie McCarroll in Pendleton's ring in 1929 to end the era of female competitors. However, horsewomen continue to participate as champion riders. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good coverage of 100 years
This is a good updated book covering the past 100 years of the Pendleton Roundup. Excellent pictures and detailed history. Worth keeping in your book collections for younger generations to look at in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC HISTORY OF THE GREATEST RODEO
This is a gorgeous book full of Pendleton Round-Up history in pictures and words.Everything you could have ever wanted to know about rodeo and the people that have and do participate in them.A feast for the those that love the history of the American West. You will look at and read this book over and over!
On another note . . . It took Amazon three shipments to get this book to me as the first two were damaged in shipping.Even the third book had some faint scrape marks on the cover due to the book sliding inside the box with no protection.Amazon is not packing and shipping this book properly, and it is too big and heavy to be unwrapped in a carboard box with some air bags sitting on top of it, not even wrapped around the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended not just for Oregon history collections but for any library interested in American West history and culture
Pendleton Round-Up at 100: Oregon's Legendary Rodeo moves beyond historical non-fiction and reads like a novel as it provides a history of a rodeo that began in 1910 and shaped a community. Lavish photos and history will attract any rodeo fan or rural library collection, and makes for an outstanding survey recommended not just for Oregon history collections but for any library interested in American West history and culture.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hard to find book!
My local bookstore said this book was out of print and couldn't get a copy for me.Many thanks to Amazon for having it and even sending it quicker than they said they would. It came in plenty of time for Christmas for my mother-in-law who lived in Pendleton and knows some people in the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A collector's book for fans of the American West
The authors have done themselves proud. A collector's book and beautifully designed, PENDLETON ROUND-UP AT 100 preserves a cultural icon of the American West.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rodeo Done Right
Here are the two questions to ask about rodeo novels:

1) does the author actually know the rodeo life?

2) does the author write well?

Here the answers are: yes, and yes. A dynamite combination that provides the reader with both a good read and insight into an aspect of American life most of us will never experience.

Armstrong TX is not on the main rodeo circuit, which explains how a beatup bronc rider like Larry Miller was able to wangle an invitation, all expenses paid.He didn't last out the ten seconds of his first ride but ended in the infirmary where he met Martha Daniels who has short hair, slim hips, and a mouth that tastes like peaches.

He met her again at the Longhorn Dance Hall, where she invited him to go with her to church that Sunday. But when he showed up at her door, the only one home was her thirteen-year old son Tim, all arms and legs and the common sense of a month-old spaniel.

While searching for Martha, Larry must continue to compete in the rodeo, keep Tim out of misadventures, fight off the advances of two nymphomaniac housewives, and break up a drug distribution ring.Unfortunately, Artie Daniels, Martha's ex-husband, doesn't pay for the dope he buys or return the money he borrows to pay for it.Threats come from every direction, but Larry does make one importantnew friend, Lionel, a 6' 3" 250 pound enforcer for a loan shark.More important, he finds a way to come to grips with his own aging body and his need for a new career.

Product Description

Blacktop Cowboys chronicles the 2004 rodeo season through the eyes of several steer wrestlers trying to make it back to rodeo's version of the Super Bowl, the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) in Las Vegas.
Steer wrestling is an adventure that entails riding into an arena at 25 mph, sliding off a horse while taking hold of a 500-pound steer, and then throwing the animal to the ground. The best cowboys often accomplish all this in less than four seconds. The two main characters of Blacktop Cowboys are Luke Branquinho, a young carefree cowboy on a quest for his first title, and his best friend, Travis Cadwell, a veteran trying to make the NFR one last time.
Much of Blacktop Cowboys unfolds in trucks, trailers, arenas, behind the chutes, casinos, beds and everywhere else cowboys spend their time. By taking the reader deep into the cowboys' lives, Blacktop Cowboys offers a true and intimate portrait of men having the time of their lives while living on the road in pursuit of the dream to be the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
This is one of the best books I have read in a long time.A humorous but realistic portrayal of true rodeo cowboys.I recommend it highly to anyone who has ever known a cowboy.

4-0 out of 5 stars That championship season . . .
Author Phillips follows a handful of champion steer wrestlers on a year's round of rodeos, focusing mostly on 23-year-old Luke Branquinho from Los Alamos, California, who in 2004 went to the National Finals and finished first, with over $193,000 in overall earnings. That is the book in a nutshell. Readers follow along as Luke, his brother Casey, best friend Travis Cadwell, and a colleague Marc Jensen crisscross the West to compete at dozens of rodeos. The steer wrestling itself and the competition get almost asmuch attention as the long-distance rig driving, poker playing, carousing, beer drinking, junk food eating, gambling, pot smoking, cell-phone talking, and the idle conversations, story telling, boredom, practical joking, raillery, tomfoolery, and high jinks that fill the time between rodeos and rides.

The book is an honest effort to recreate the experience of being on the road with this fraternity of men in their twenties and thirties, living out dreams of rodeo glory, pitting skill against luck in the arena, building friendships that qualify as a rough-and-ready kind of male bonding, struggling with disappointments, and dealing with physical ailments that range from colossal hangovers to serious injuries. You won't find much padding - no history of steer wrestling, no side-trips and detours into related subjects, and very little character study or analysis of the sport itself. It's pretty much play-by-play - whether behind the scenes or out in front of the crowd - ending in a 40-page account of the ten-day Finals in Las Vegas. A quick read, with a 16-page section of great action photos and thumbnail portraits of the cowboys featured in the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars good read
I got very interested in the characters, and learned some things about the life of a rodeo cowboy. It's a good summer read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blacktop Cowboys is an actual on the road cowboy story
I bought this book as I college rodeoed with some of its characters. Appears they haven't changed much. The author did a great job of showing what it really is like out on the road. Not just the glitzy outlook but the behind the scenes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly Captured
I had read a glowing review of Blacktop Cowboys that piqued my interest.Though my husband describes me as a neo-aristocratic fashionista, little did he know that up to the age of 11 I rode western saddle and particpated in, albeit very small, local rodeos. There is something about these men (and women) who capture a part of America that holds a seemingly romantic life.Hats off, literally, to Ty Phillips! He wrote a wonderful book on today's steer wrestlers. And thanks to the gentlemen who allowed Mr. Phillips into their life.Without their participation I don't know if Mr. Phillips could have written so honestly about them.Mr. Phillips does not romantize, per se, about the life, but is able to put one there, watching the milesigns go by, feel the dust in one's nose, and the frustration or joy of an event.Whether one has an interest in rodeos or cowboys, buy this book, you won't read anything better.Thank you Mr. Phillips for writing about a subject few of us will ever know as well, than through your words. ... I purchased this book for my daughter as she is a fan of all of Ms. Enderle's writing. She particularly wanted to read this one because she had read The Cotton Candy Catastrophe at the Texas State Fair. She enjoyed the book, the terrific illustrations and Jake's ingenuity. She thinks it's funny that Jake keeps doing things that aren't mean to cause problems, but the problems that result are huge. She also likes that he is able to solve the problems in the end!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fearless Funnymen lauded by rodeo publisher
As a former rodeo clown and bullfighter, I was absolutely spellbound by this book. As a former editor of Rodeo News and current publisher of Texas Rodeo, I was impressed with its accuracy. As a professional journalist and amateur rodeo historian, I was excited to have it as reference material. As soon as I finished it, I decided I needed to meet the author, Gail Woerner, someday. The next year, we ran into each other anonymously at the Western Writers of America convention in Kerrville during a reception at the Cowboy Artists Museum. During the conversation, we figured out that we had similar intersts, and the moment I heard her name, I wouldn't let her get away for the rest of the evening. Woerner has documented much of the history of the early rodeo clown--history that is largely forgotten by most rodeo people and historians. If you want a wonderful insight into what early rodeo clowns were like and where they came from, this is THE book. It served as a main source for a historical article I did for Cowboys and Country magazine in the summer of 1998 (Rodeo Clowns: Tough Times 10). That article would not have been as good as it was if Gail Woerner had not done such a good job on the extensive research needed for a book like this. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars RODEO HEARTS
RODEO HEARTS by Joyce Livingston is a three-in-one collection. From a woman who must returned to her childhood home to gain her inheritance, to a detective needing a nanny for his unruly kids, each story was loosely based on a fish out of water scenario.Stories one and two appealed to me because I am a cowgirl at heart and a sucker for anything with its setting being the west or on a ranch. But, I was surprised that the third story had nothing to do with the western theme the cover or title of the book betrayed. It definitely seemed out of place.I did feel at times these love stories galloped along at too fast of a pace.Of course, with each story only approximately 150 pages in length, I guess I understand the need to have the plot move quicker than your average novel.By the third story, I found the dialogue to be a bit stilted and melodramatic. The pet names the main characters volleyed back and forth got to be a bit too much for me.The repetitive my darling, my beloved, my love, my precious one, were overkill. And I had a hard time marrying the theatrical terms of endearment with that of a dedicated police detective.

RODEO HEARTS made for quick reads. And since I was traveling when I read them, the lengths were a nice change from the 300+ page novels I usually read.

Product Description
"Heart pounding, blood pumping, the cowboy nods, chute gate opens, and his world begins. Eight seconds of adrenaline rush. Eight seconds of gripping, pulling, and holding on. The animal under him bucks and twists attempting to dislodge the cowboy's seat but the rider sticks like glue. The buzzer sounds, the cowboy dismounts, tips his hat to a cheering crowd, and nods at his proud fellow riders. Just another day at the office."--from Ropes, Reins, and Rawhide

Melody Groves, a native New Mexican and former bull rider, examines the sport of rodeo, from a brief history of the ranch-based competition to the rodeos of today and what each event demands. One of the first topics she addresses is the treatment of the animals. As she points out, without the bulls or horses, there wouldn't be a rodeo. For that reason, the stock contractors, chute workers, cowboys, and all the arena workers respect the animals and take precautions against their injuries.Groves writes for the rodeo novice, explaining the workings and workers (stock handlers, veterinarians, clowns, "pick up" men, event judges, etc.) seen in the arena and behind the scenes. She then describes the rodeo events: bull riding, saddle bronc riding, bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, tie-down roping, and barrel racing. Interviews with rodeo legends in every event round out the "feel" for this breathtaking sport. Over ninety photos depict what is described in the text to more fully explain the rodeo, with its ropes, reins, and rawhide. ... Read more

Product Description

Summer is supposed to be fun.
Right?

Peggy Fleming Farrell's summer has taken a turn for the worse: She works at the Gas'n Git to pay back her parents for wrecking two cars, takes summer school French from a succession of increasingly lame substitute teachers, loves an IHOP waiter, and attends Lamaze class with her mother while her father prepares for his professional ice-skating comeback (read: midlife crisis).

Just when the only exciting event looming before her is the town's annual Rodeo Roundup Days -- "exciting" being a relative term -- things take an unexpected turn for the better. Between hijinks with a hijacked golf cart, plans for streaking at the Rodeo parade, and a showdown over pancakes, Peggy's summer becomes more about mayhem than money management, and definitely something close to fun. Even if she never learns to speak French.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a Normal Summer
Sixteen year old, Peggy Fleming Farrell believes that her summer has come to the worst. Waking up at five every morning, rollerblading across town to work, and babysitting her younger siblings is not how she expected her summer to start. After wrecking two of her parents' cars, Peggy, who was named after a famous figure skater, has to take on a job at Gas `n' Git to pay back her debt. In addition, to make things worse, she gets her license taken away. You will have to read the book to see if Peggy's summer takes a huge twist or if everything just seems to get worse.
I really enjoyed this book because it had a funny plot to it. Peggy just wants to spend her summer learning French and hanging out with her friends, but nothing seems to go the way she wants it to. I liked everything about this book and it was a very quick read. Every chapter has something new and unexpected. I hardly ever wanted to put it down.
Mostly girls would probably like this book. If you want to experience "sweet sixteen" through another's eyes, this would be perfect for you. The main character definitely explains how there can be more work than fun and the disadvantages of growing up. Either way, this is an awesome book and I think you will probably enjoy it.

predictable. At the end of the book you can kind of figue out what is going to happen. This book is also very slow and hard to get into. You really have to keep reading to get to the good part. I thought that this girl complained to much also.

5-0 out of 5 stars Her Life Is Literally A Frozen Rodeo
Peggy Fleming. Not your typical 16 year old teenager. With problems that are not even hers, such as her dad being a skater and trying to make his comeback, and her mom being a weather announcer on KLDV radio who is also expecting another baby. How will she make it through the problems that ARE hers? She works at Gas 'N Git, there is a robber on the loose that robs gas stations, gives her parents her paycheck so she can pay them back for the two car accidents she caused, and watches her siblings. Also, she is obsessed with Steve Gropher, has no friend in town for the summer, goes to french class were the teacher never shows up and gets substitutes that do not even speak French, and has to take a bus with a crazy driver because she has no car. But one of the biggest problems is that the Rodeo Days are coming to town in Lindville, which she hates. I like this book because the author leaves you hanging there wondering what is going to happen next and then picks you right back up again. Also, she ties everything together and makes this story relate to most teenage girls.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh What a "Rodeo"
Peggy Fleming Farrell is stuck working as a coffee wench at the Gas `n Git when all she wants to go is grab some gas and git out of Dodge before her father, Patrick Farrell, involves her in his skating comeback. Then there's Peggy's mom, queen of weather and radio broadcasting, who seems to think Peggy hasn't got a responsible bone in her body even as she rushes out the door leaving Peggy to watch "The Little Mermaid" again with her younger siblings. Then there's Peggy's desperate crush and the agony of small-town America, but a la Dorothy, Peggy's going to learn that there's no place like the rodeo.

4-0 out of 5 stars Attention SmalltownTeenagers
Frozen Rodeo is a book about a teenage girl that lives in a small hometown. She faces many problems like boys, French class, Rodeo Days, a job, and dealing with her mother's pregnancy. In the small town though, she doesn't have a lot of things to do in her spare time. All the adventures and daily problems she goes through makes for an excellent book full of drama with some comedy.
The part I liked about this book was how I could relate to the main character in many ways. Being a teenager from a small town like she was, I could understand jokes and remarks she'd make. Also the imagery was well described so you can easily get a picture in your head. However, one thing I didn't like about the book was how the author would drag things out at parts. I prefer a book that's exciting at every part. If you have ever read the book When Zachary Beaver Came to Town, you would enjoy this book because it has a lot of the same type of comedy. Also, the small town setting makes them have the same feel. I would recommend reading this book if you are a teenage girl. You'll understand more of where the main character is coming from and dealing with. ... Read more

I purchased this book at my husbands request. He is deployed to Afghanistan and wanted to read it as he liked it from his earlier years. I received the book quickly and it was in great condition just as described. Thank you so much!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Reason Why Books Are Written
Bravo to Mike Flanagan.I bought Cowboy Up! and Rigged To Ride back in mid-1999.I didn't like to read much because it seemed that every book I read was "boring".Then again I was in High School and they never chose good/interesting books.I read Cowboy Up! after I first read it, then I hit this phase of not wanted to read, it wasn't because the book was bad, it was more or less not wanted to finish the series because I never wanted it to end.So, by the summer of 2002 I read Mike's second book Rigged to Ride, boy did he do a great job of continuing the swell adventure.I bought his final book "Final Ride" right after it was released and again after I finished the second book I didn't want this awesome adventure to end, so I let it sit on the shelf and collect dust.So now it comes to the present time, July 2006 and I travel by bus a lot to and from work so I need to kill some time so I looked at the book and decided to finish up this series.Spectacular ending, I wish there was more but from the ending I can dream what may have happened.Mike has enlightned to keep on reading and never fear for an ending.Yes, I will miss reading about Clay, Jack, Billy, Tamara, Julie, Terry, etc..., but I will never forget the enjoyable time I had reading these books. This book made me feel like I was a part of it, and I mean that like "The Neverending Story" type of way.I would promote this book anyway that I could. It's great for all ages and an easy read.If you have not read this book yet, do yourself a favor and buy them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Realistic Rodeo
As a participant in various rodeo events and activities, as well as a avid reader of Western contemporary novels, I am use to plain, dull novels in which the author rambles about a topic he or she has no knowledge about. However, this novel captures the reality in every detail no matter how stark it may be to create a remarkable series of events producing the images in one's mind with every fluid word. The author's use of desciptive adjectives provides fuel for a reader aware of the rodeo atmosphere, while also providing ample definative sentences, hindering a unknowledgable reader from making conjectures as to the meaning of various Western and rodeo lingo. The novel accounts the struggles between a lonesome rancher carrying a heavy burden, and a troubled teenager who is a up and coming rodeo legend. They need each other in their own ways, and throughout the novel their triumphs and pitfalls are emphasized in glorious detail, absolving the rancher's heavy burden in the conclusion.Anyone who enjoys the Western contemporary novels would benefit themselves by reading this novel. All to often the author of such novels have no bearing on the subject, and hence loses the reader in the muddle. This novel is crystal clear to all providing knowledge, and compelling the reader to continue on in the exquisative adventure that evolves throughout. It causes the reader to cheer in the triumphs, and fall in silence with the pitfalls. The author always keeps the reader's interest and attention, and causes wonderment as to what will evolve next. The novel engrosses everything that makes up the West and rodeo capturing the tradition that rodeo emphasizes.Warning, this book may entrall the reader preventing the reader from laying in down.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
This is the first book in the Rodeo Cowboys series. I don't know if you need to read the whole series in order or not. I had such great hope for this book but I was completely disappointed with it. The plot was unbelievable and the characters were unbelievable. I didn't care what happened to the characters and was feeling like it was a waste of money. I don't believe that the first thing you do after being held at gunpoint is to have sex with the person who is holding you hostage. I further don't believe that after that first bout of sex you know that this is the woman of your dreams. Finally I don't believe that the Governor would really be out to kill Melanie because if everything happened the way she said it had, then he would know that she was of no threat to him. I just can't say this enough it was not a good book and it was not worth my money. I love all kinds of books and some of them don't have to be based in reality (like Kay Hooper's series with Bishop) but at least some of it has to be logical.

I must say that the ones who are giving the book 5 stars got to read all of the books together. It might have made a difference but since each book was separate I didn't realize it was a short story and felt ripped off. I don't know if I would have changed the rating though because I so didn't think the characters and actions made sense but I might have liked the other books in the series, but I'm not spending the money to buy them to find out!

5-0 out of 5 stars Rodeo Cowboys
Melanie Blake is desperate. She is a speech writer for the governor of Montana and when she stumbles across a cover-up she needs to get out of the state.Someone tried to break into her house and without any proof, she needs to find a way to implicate the governor without risking her life.Watching from the stands at a rodeo, she picks saddle bronc rider Steve McCall to help her when her intuition tells her that he is an honest man.Stowing away in his camper, she waits for the right moment before making herself known.

Steve McCall is dead tired. After five rodeos in four days, the last thing he needs is the pretty redhead he noticed in the stands, "kidnapping" him at gun point. He knows Red must be running from someone and all his protective instincts are raging to the surface. When she tells him what she is running from, he decides to take her to his Ranch; no one will look for her there.

As Melanie finds a safe place with Steve, she begins to realize that her initial attraction to him might be more than a simple attraction.Steve wants nothing more than to keep Melanie safe and by his side, but there is someone else that has a different plan for Melanie's future. Can Steve keep the woman he loves safe from the threats against her?

I love a good cowboy and Steve definitely lives up to the name.Fiercely protective of Melanie, I loved this rugged man.Melanie is a perfect match for him and I can't wait to read more books in this series by Sage Burnett.Melanie's Protector is a fabulous read, one that I enjoyed immensely.

Through the lens of her camera Karly Jackson is capturing images of rodeo cowboys for a book she is working on.But none of them have captured her until she looks at Hawk Rivers.Hawk knows that he isn't good enough for Karly, but that doesn't stop him from seeking her bed whenever they meet.Karly knows that she is going to be hurt by this cowboy when he won't even volunteer the simplest of information to her.

As Karly and Hawk fall into bed, Karly realizes that she needs more from this man that she is falling for.But will Hawk ever be able to give her what she wants?Hawk knows that he has to deal with his past before he can ever have a future. But will Karly still want him if he confesses the truth?

Karly and Hawk are an incredible couple, and I loved reading about their journey together.Hawk has been hurt horribly in the past, and he isn't ready to acknowledge that he may need another human.Karly is able to get in under his skin, and I loved how understanding she was, although she certainly was no pushover.Karly's Drifter is an exceptional read and I recommend it to anyone that loves a good cowboy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Get a Rodeo Cowboy tonight!
I completely enjoyed this story as it takes you thru the world of cowboys not as being glorious but what happens in real life.

I would recommend this to anyone who wants a good book to curl up with. From beginning to end this book kept me captivated.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horribly Inaccurate!
I wanted a good, hot, cowboy book and I thought I found it with this book. WRONG! The author doesn't seem to have a CLUE about the western lifestyle/cowboys/rodeo. Her story lines are weak and her references to western anything seem to either be inaccurate or not make any sense. This whole book was a waste because of the lack of details, depth and accurate portrayals of cowboys. She DID NOT do the western lifestyle justice. Rodeo was more attractive before she tried to put her spin on it! Also...if she bothered to do her homework AT ALL, she would realize that anyone who knows anything about rodeo wouldn't buy this book just because of her cover! What respectable REAL cowboy would wear a $5 smashed up Billabong cowboy hat....? I did my best to give this book a shot, I overlooked her horribly inaccurate cover, read the first 15 pages, and now on the shelve it will sit. Sorry, I can NOT recommend this book to anyone mildly knowledgeable on the western way of life.

5-0 out of 5 stars all three of the thrilling Rodeo Cowboy stories under one cover!
MELANIE'S PROTECTOR
Melanie is in big trouble. While working as a speech writer for the governor, she accidentally comes across information about a cover-up and kickbacks. The governor catches her with the open computer file, since then she's been in serious danger. She's on the run and needs help, which she finds in a saddle bronc rider, Steve.

Melanie picked Steve because he looked honest. She follows him out to his truck and camper and when he leaves the camper unlocked, she seizes the opportunity to hide inside. Her intention is to make him drive her to Bozeman where she can catch her flight, only she wasn't counting on her hand-picked cowboy's unwillingness to go along with her plan.Even with her holding a gun on him, he calmly talks to her, makes coffee, and then goes to bed.Melanie falls asleep with the gun still in her hand but wakes up when she feels him attempting to relieve her of the weapon and they end up in a wrestling match that arouses them both.Steve fully intends to find out what Melanie is so terrified of that she'd go to these extremes. There's no way he'll allow any harm to come to her.Until she's ready to tell him what's going on, there are other things they can do to occupy their time and relieve some of the sexual tension between them. Will he be able to protect Melanie from the high-powered men who are after her?

MELANIE'S PROTECTOR is the first book in Sage Burnett's RODEO COWBOYS series starting it off with a bang. This book is fast paced and will delight readers with the interactions between Melanie and Steve.Melanie is just an innocent woman who accidentally saw some incriminating files in the governor's office.Steve is a cowboy whose mama taught him to always help a lady in trouble and he takes her teachings to heart.Melanie didn't want to involve Steve in her problems but from the minute she kidnapped him, he takes on her worries as his own.

KARLY'S DRIFTER
Karly Jackson is a freelance photographer. She's spent a month traveling the rodeo circuit snapping pictures for a book. Most of the cowboys she comes across are thrilled at the opportunity to be immortalized in her book, but the one man who really intrigues Karly flat out refuses to have any part of it.

Karly is inexplicably drawn to Hawk despite his gruff attitude and refusal to sign the release form to allow her to use the pictures she's taken of him.Her lack of fear and refusal to back down to him arouse Hawk far more than he cares to think about. After the final competition, Hawk pays a visit to Karly's motor home with the intention of taking the film that contains pictures of him.He doesn't get the film but it turns out to be a trip well worth making.Without any preamble he suggests they go to bed, according to him there's no need for courtship stuff is a waste of time and Karly couldn't agree more.Hawk swears that he's bad for her and they can't have a permanent relationship, but Karly's already half in love with him. Will she get her heart broken and what is this big secret that he insists on keeping to himself?

KARLY'S DRIFTER is the second book in Sage Burnett's RODEO COWBOY series. This story packs quite a wallop with the fast paced storyline, hot sex, and unforgettable characters.I adored Karly's quick witted banter with Hawk and the fact that she didn't let him intimidate her.Hawk is the strong silent type and right from the first page you get the sense that he's been very hurt in the past. It's a refreshing change of pace to be able to view rodeo cowboys as people with very real problems and a life outside of the rodeo circuit.

JOSIE'S HEARTBREAKER
Josie Landford is finally free of a twenty-year oppressive marriage and her son has gone away to college. She's decided that it's time for her to live out her sexual fantasies with a rodeo cowboy. With that goal in mind, she attends her very first rodeo and finds her ideal candidate in number twenty-seven, Rex West.

Josie may know exactly what she wants from Rex - scorching sex, but his old-fashioned ideals aren't going to allow for her to take the lead in any relationship that develops between them.He believes in courtship, even if it is just a short one before going to bed with a woman.Josie would rather try to keep their encounters sexual but Rex's insistence on opening doors and dinner dates is causing a riot of emotions that she isn't ready for and, quiet honestly, didn't anticipate. After their first dinner date, Josie and Rex end up back at her place.Surprisingly, rather than jumping into bed, Josie becomes nervous. She has no doubt that she wants Rex but first she wants to establish some ground rules. Her first rule is that they will not have a one-night stand. The second rule - no strings attached. She lets him pick rule number three, his rule - one night a week. What will happen when their one night a week affair turns out not to be enough?

JOSIE'S HEARTBREAKER is the final book in Sage Burnett's RODEO COWBOY series.Don't worry if you haven't read the first two stories, each of the books can be read independently.I particularly liked JOSIE'S HEARTBREAKER because the main characters are more mature; both have been in long term marriages and have no qualms about who they are or what they want from each other.Rex's gentlemanly qualities quickly won me over, I was continuously tantalized with his rough and ready cowboy attitude. The combination of the two traits is enough to keep any girl salivating!Josie had a simple affair all planned out; an affair devoid of complicated emotional attachment.Rex turns out to be unlike any man she's ever known and she's not sure how to deal with her developing feelings. This is truly a fun tale that will feed your fantasies about cowboys, yet leave you hungering for more.

This was a great read. The stories kept your intrest and they were very steamy.I will be looking for more on the same line of this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Overall good read
Overall, The Cowboy is a good, sexy read.It has plenty of hot sex, and some humorous moments. The problem with anthologies is that there isn't enough time to really get to know the characters. At times, I felt like I was dropped in the middle of a book, not fully understanding exactly what dynamics were taking place. But on the good side, it does give me a guideline on what authors to look for.

5-0 out of 5 stars You just gotta love a cowboy's devilishly sexy smile, his swagger, and grab life by the horns
There's just something about a cowboy's devilishly sexy smile, his swagger, and grab life by the horns attitude that draws women to him. Or maybe it's just the way those chaps ride low on his hips and draw our attention to everything below the belt.

WILD RIDE by Vonna Harper
Jordan has been infatuated with half-breed bull rider Cougar since she was just a girl. One year ago, she was thrown when his Brahma, Rampage, displayed his bad attitude by running into her barrel-racing mare.Jordan is making an attempt at getting over the fear of bulls that she's developed and Cougar is ready, willing and able to help fulfill any and all her needs.

Vonna Harper does a brilliant job depicting the raw courage it takes Jordan to confront her fears.Cougar and Jordan's attraction ismutual but they've kept a tight rein on their emotions and never acted on them - until now.

COWBOY IN PARADISE by PJ Mellor
Tyler is tired of the hard living he's known on the rodeo circuit. He decides to return to Paradise Beach with his horse Jim.Only it's not the nice quiet community he remembers and he's relegated to riding Jim on the beach at night. It's on one of his moonlight rides that he encounters Meg.Instantly infatuated, Tyler is determined that this little filly belong to him - even if she is determined to keep him at an emotional distance.

Who can possibly resist a sexy cowboy on a moonlight beach? It's the perfect scene for love or at least an unforgettable seduction.Tyler's horse, Jim, had me smiling through this book with his antics.PJ Mellor uses the perfect blend of humor and romance to satisfy any reader.

SADDLE SORE by Nelissa Donovan
Horse rancher Dean McCabe takes his work very seriously and no one is going to get in his way of protecting his interests.Conversationalist Cassandra Darling has been brought in to investigate a series of attacks that are being blamed on the Mexican Gray Wolf.Despite the seriousness of the situation, Dean and Cassandra can't resist the lure of the animalistic desire that burns between them.Is there any hope for their tenuous relationship?

Nelissa Donovan brings to light the plight of relocated animals while drawing us into the relationship between Cassandra and Dean.I loved the passion that develops between the main characters while Cassandra tries to uncover the truth behind the animal attacks.

RODEO MAN by Nikki Alton
While on assignment in Wyoming for an L.A magazine, Anna Hartley is let go from her job because of downsizing, learns that her boyfriend is cheating on her, and then her rental car breaks down on a deserted road. Her luck changed for the better when rodeo rider Grant Olson takes a shortcut and gives her a ride to a ranger station. There's a definite connection between them but they're from completely different backgrounds. Is there any hope for a future between a big city girl and a rodeo cowboy?

Any city girl will really appreciate this gem by Nikki Alton. Who among us doesn't have a horrible day and long for a special man to rescue us? If he's a sexy-as-sin authentic rodeo cowboy, then you've got the perfect ending to a bad day.

THE COWBOY contains four novellas by well-known authors. Each story will tempt, tease, and leave readers drooling for a cowboy of their very own.The authors capture the persona that draw us to these men who work hard, play harder, and when they love, they make sure they stay in the saddle until everyone is fully satisfied. This is definitely a book I'll be adding to my keeper shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Cowboy
Wild Ride by Vonna Harper

Jordan Shore was knocked off her horse by a wild bull while competing in a rodeo a year ago.She suffered an extensive injury but the emotional scars run much deeper.Cougar Lighthorse is the bull's owner.Cougar and Jordan have known each other since they were kids, since Cougar's dad was the foreman on Jordan's father's ranch.

Cougar and Jordan meet up at Jordan's first big rodeo competition since her injury and the sparks fly.Although it was kept hidden, the simmering attraction they have always had between them flares into a raging inferno.

Cougar is there when Jordan needs him. Will she do the same when Cougar needs her?

There is nothing frilly or flowery about Jordan and Cougar is a tough, headstrong man. They take turns controlling each other's passions and in turn the loving is hard, explosive and almost spiritual for them.Although Wild Ride is intense and wild, it is also tender and meaningful.

Cowboy In Paradise by PJ Mellor

Tyler Last has recently retired from the rodeo. He heads to his grandmother's house in Paradise Cove for some much needed peace and tranquility. The beach house is far from peaceful though; construction is under way to make the beach public.

Meg Holder is protesting the construction in Paradise Beach. She has a lousy job and a non-existent love life. While sitting on the beach one night a magnificent cowboy riding his equally magnificent horse rode up close to her. After a brief exchange of words, Meg is wrapped in Tyler's embrace and kissing him passionately.Tyler takes off suddenly though and Meg is left a bit stunned.

Tyler is left fantasizing about the mystery woman on the beach, which is a first for him since he is a love `em and leave `em kind of guy.

As they continue to meet for uninhibited great sex, Tyler is falling fast and hard, but how will he feel when he finds out who Meg really is?

A Cowboy In Paradise is a red hot, steamy romance!Tyler could charm any woman out of her clothes, so it's no surprise that Meg falls for his seductive cowboy charm.I like Meg.She is funny and down to earth but the seductress is not a role she seems comfortable with. There are a few inconsistencies in the story and there is a scene involving some plastic wrap that is a bit over the top.I liked the storyline though; "bad boy finds the woman of his dreams and turns over a new leaf" is very romantic.

Saddle Sore by Nelissa Donovan

Cassandra Donovan is a US Fish and Wildlife agent. Cassie has come to the small town of Granite Hollow investigating the possibility of some wolves that were released in the area are attacking the local livestock.Dean McCabe is a rancher. It's lust at first sight for Dean and Cassie and very quickly they are wrapped in each other's arms, tangled in his sheets.

Before they can figure out where their relationship is headed though, they need to solve the mystery of what is attacking the animals in town.

There is a lot of "story" in Saddle Sore.It has mystery, danger, past issues, and Dean and Cassie have a new relationship to work through, which are all interesting. These elements could have been expressed in more detail if it were longer though.Dean and Cassie are a good match and the sex is hot!

Rodeo Man by Nikki Alton

Ana Hartley is on a business trip when she loses her job and her fiancé so instead of heading back home, she moves on.Along the way, Ana's car breaks down and she stops a truck for help.

Grant Olson is all too eager to pick up the beauty flagging him down. After taking her to get help he has to move on to get ready for his next rodeo competition though.

Ana attends a rodeo where she meets Grant again and before long they are heating up the night in each other's arms.Grant and Ana come from two different worlds; one of them thinks they have what it takes to make it work but the other isn't so sure. It's going to take some smooth and seductive convincing for them to give a relationship a shot.

I really like the way that Rodeo Man is written. It's very descriptive and I was totally drawn into the story. The sex between Ana and Grant is mind-blowing.They give new meaning to the expression "playing with your food" and it's amazing that they never get caught playing with it.These two are very compatible sexually.I felt a little wistful at the ending even though I know it's all, all right.Rodeo Man is an extremely erotic story and I really liked Ana and Grant a lot.

Four lucky ladies get to rope in their very own cowboy in The Cowboy. These women know what they want from a man and their cowboys know just how to fulfill their every desire. The Cowboy is not a sugary sweet romance. It is hot, hard, and raunchy. If you're looking for steaming hot fantasies, then The Cowboy is your book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Hot cover. Good authors.
What a super hot cover. Va-voom. And four fine authors writing the erotic romance inside. They all have a light touch and good story-telling skills.

But I have to say that though this is erotica, and the book comes with a warning that the content sizzles, I still miss the parts that fall between the kiss and two people jumping between the sheets, or the horse blankets. Those parts aren't represented here. The couples say a few words face-to-face, then the guy has his hand on her ---- in the very next paragraph, if not the next sentence.

Maybe somebody thinks this is believable, but I find that I still want a little more paragrahical foreplay in order to get into the swing, "erotica" or not. And I think that all of these stories might have been even better if they had had real progressions of emotion, as much as a novella would allow, anyway.

Product Description
This book chronicles the story of a volunteer firefighter who finds himself helping to battle the largest wildfire in the history of the State of Arizona. Starting in the tiny village of Cibecue, Arizona on the White Mountain Apache Reservation and, eventually, encompassing the entire Mogollon Rim, the human-caused Rodeo-Chediski Fire explodes and forces the evacuation of over thirty thousand people.

This story exposes the friction between the United States Forest Service and the small, rural, fire departments in the White Mountains of Arizona and details the differing viewpoints on how the fire should have been fought. The author, a former resident of Tucson, joined the Linden Fire Department in 1999 as a volunteer and on June 18th, 2002 found himself face-to-face with a huge, out-of-control wildfire that threatened to destroy whole towns and neighborhoods on the Mogollon Rim ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful story
I found this book to be very moving. It makes you feel as though you are right there with Gary and his fellow firefighters as they try to save their neighborhoods.I found the book to be very hard to put down and found myself thinking about the book during the day.At times, I was brought to tears as I read about the homes that were destroyed and the pets that were displaced by this awful fire. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys real life adventures.

5-0 out of 5 stars The truth of one volunteer's heroic service and adventure
I am new to living in the Arizona mountains where Gary's story takes place. I have driven through the area of forest where blackened trees still stand and sensed the gothic eeriness of this sad event, and now I know the details of that terrible fire. Gary's story is a page turner and the witness of one volunteer fire fighter's experience. As a former librarian I would highly recommend this book for youth and adults. And you don't have to live in Arizona to appreciate this tale of a volunteer who found himself helping to battle the largest wildfire in the history of the State of Arizona. ... Read more
