Excerpt: Diana Golden Brosnihan, née Diana Golden (March 20, 1963, Lincoln, Mass. - August 25, 2001, Providence, R.I.) was an American disabled ski racer. After losing a leg to cancer at age 12, she went on to win 10 world and 19 United States championships between 1986 and 1990 as a three-tracker, or one-legged skier. Golden also won an Olympic gold medal in giant slalom at the 1988 Calgary Games, where disabled skiing was a demonstration sport. She participated in alpine skiing at two Winter Paralympic Games, in 1980 and 1988, winning two gold medals in the latter year. After retiring from sking, cancer returned in 1992 and 1996, with her last bout of cancer resulting in her death in 2001. Diana Golden grew up in Lincoln, Massachusetts and began skiing at the age of five, making regular trips to Cannon Mountain Ski Area with her parents. However in 1975, at the age of 12, her right leg collapsed while she was walking home from skiing and doctors diagnosed bone cancer. As a result the doctors had to amputate her leg above the knee to stop the cancer from spreading. Following the surgery the first question Golden asked was whether she would be able to ski agai...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=9865611 ... Read more

Excerpt: Esther Vergeer (born 18 July 1981, Woerden) is a Dutch former wheelchair basketball and current wheelchair tennis player. She is five-time Paralympics tennis champion, eleven-time consecutive world-champion (i.e. winner of the NEC Masters tournament), and has been the world's top ranked player since 1999. Unbeaten in singles matches since January 2003, she may be the most dominant player in any professional sports. Vergeer became paraplegic when she was 8 years old due to an otherwise successful, very risky surgery concerning hemorrhaging blood vessels around her spinal cord. During revalidation she learned to play volleyball, basketball, and tennis in a wheelchair. After playing basketball for several years at club level, she was invited to join the national wheelchair basketball team. She played with the Dutch team that won the European championship in 1997. Vergeer had started playing tennis in parallel with basketball, playing her first international tournament in 1996, and switched to full-time tennis in 1998. Coached by Marc Kalkman, her first big win was at the US Open championships in 1998, moving her from 15th to 2nd in the world ranking. During the 2000 Summer Paralympics in Sydney she did not lose a set to win the gold medal in singles and also won the doubles title with Maaike Smit as her partner. At international tournaments, Vergeer has (as of November 19, 2009) won 140 singles and 123 doubles titles. Her overall record is 582 wins and 25 losses in singles, and 395 wins and ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=9241345 ... Read more

Excerpt: The 1988 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXIV Olympiad, were an international multi-sport event celebrated in 1988 in Seoul, South Korea. They were the second summer Olympic Games to be held in Asia and the first since the 1964 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo, Japan. They were also the fourth Olympic Games to be held in Autumn. In the Seoul Games, 160 nations were represented by a total of 8391 athletes: 6197 men and 2194 women. 237 events were held. 27221 volunteers helped to prepare the Olympics. 11331 media (4978 written press and 6353 broadcasters) showed the Games all over the world. These were the last Olympic Games for two of the world's "dominating" sport powers, the Soviet Union and East Germany, as both ceased to exist before the next Olympic Games. North Korea, still officially at war with South Korea, and its allies, Albania, Cuba, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Nicaragua, and Seychelles boycotted the games. However, the much larger boycotts seen in the previous three Summer Olympics were avoided, resulting in the largest ever number of participating nations to that date. Seoul was chosen to host the Summer Games in a vote held on September 30, 1981, finishing ahead of the Japanese city of Nagoya. Below was the vote count that occurred at the 84th IOC Session and 11th Olympic Congress in Baden-Baden, West Germany. The information comes from the International Olympic Committee Vote History web page. Athletes stand by the ceremonial torch of the 1988 Summer Olympics. Ugandan by birth, he competed for Uganda before obtaining Norwegian citizenship. He has participated in both the Winter Paralympic Games, in cross-country skiing (for Uganda) and in the Summer Paralympic Games, in mid- and long distance running (for Norway). Active from 1976 to 2000, he won five Paralympic silver medals, and one bronze. He holds the distinction of being the first African to have competed at the Winter Paralympics, and more generally the only athlete from a tropical nation to have done so. He is also one of only two Africans to have competed at the Winter Games, the other being Bruce Warner of South Africa (since 1998). Kibuuka studied at the Outward Bound School in Kenya. In 1968, he was one of the first blind people to ascend successfully to the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, earning media attention as well as praise from the Ugandan Minister of Labour. Due to this event, he was invited to Norway by an organisation promoting sports for the disabled. He arrived in Norway in 1972, a year after Idi Amins rise to power in Uganda. Due to the situation in his country of origin, he was to remain in Norway permanently, but nonetheless competed for Uganda in the 1970s. Excerpt: Kirkland Lake -Kirkland Lake is located at at an altitude of 243 metres (797 ft) above sea level and has an area of 262.24 km (101.25 sq mi). Kirkland Lake is nestled in the resource rich Precambrian Shield, the oldest geological formation on the planet. Nearby is the Arctic Watershed. Waters flowing south of this height of land (318 meters above sea level) flow into the Saint Lawrence River and on to the Atlantic Ocean. North of this point, all waters flow into Hudson Bay and on to the Arctic Ocean. Noticeable local landmarks include Mount Cheminis, rising 500 meters above sea level, and many small kettle lakes, scraped out of the rock during the last Ice Age and filled with clear water. Black spruce, Jack pine, trembling aspen, white birch, white spruce, balsam poplar, and balsam fir are the dominant trees in the area. A prominent forest form in this part of the Black Spruce distribution is the The Black Spruce/Feathermoss climax forest, which characteristically exhibits moderately dense canopy and features a forest floor of feathermosses. Moose, beaver, muskrat, snowshoe hare, as well as numerous predators roam this area, including marten, ermine, fisher, otter, black bear, wolf, and lynx. The many wetlands and lakes support a diversity of bird species, such as Great Blue Herons, ducks, geese, and that symbol of the north, the common loon. Ground and tree dwelling birds are also plentiful, including grouse, partridge, robins, blue jays, and gray jays as well as birds of prey such as hawks. Kirkland Lake enjoys four distinct seasons. Spring and autumn offer a mix of warm sunny days and crisp, cool nights. Summers are comfortably warm, with dry air and tempera...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=325502 ... Read more

Excerpt: He Junquan is a Chinese swimmer and multiple Paralympic gold medallist. He represented China at the 2000 Summer Paralympics, winning a bronze medal, a gold and a silver. Competing again at the 2004 Paralympics, he won four gold medals. He is representing China again at the 2008 Summer Paralympics. In his favorite event, the 50 m backstroke, he earned a silver, "outtouched" 0.15 seconds by Brazilian Daniel Dias. He's first gold came in 4X50m freestyle where China set a world record with a time of 2 mins 18.15 secs. A second world record and gold followed in the Men's 4 x 50m Medley 20pts. He Junquan has no arms. He has stated that, having to hit the edge of the pool with his head to stop the chronometre, he frequently scratches his scalp and hurts his back and neck. Reporting on the competition at the 2008 Games, Will Swanton of the Sydney Morning Herald wrote: "The Water Cube has been a sight for sore eyes. China's He Junquan, with no arms, was leading the 50m backstroke final. He approached the wall with a narrow lead. Every person in the stadium who had feet was on them. There was an almighty din, red Chinese flags everywhere. He came to the finish - and had to crash into the wall with his head. As He slowed down to lessen the impact, Brazilian Daniel Dias hit the wall first with an outstretched hand. You've never heard a silence like it.Presented with his silver medal and flowers at the presentation ceremony, He put the flowers between his teeth and bowed." ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=19259065 ... However, Czyz rebounded and established himself as one of the most successful German athletes in the T42 handicap class (leg amputees). A Team Ossur member, he won triple Gold Medals at the Athletics World Championship 2004 for the Disabled. He won the 100 m- and the 200 m-dash the long jump for leg amputees, setting World Records in the latter two. In the European Championship of 2005, he repeated his triple crown, winning each discipline again, and feat emulated in the 2006 World Championships, when he again won triple gold medals.
