Product Description

The story of the invincible Silver Arrows is an enduring legend, but who remembers that in the 1930s the cars racing under this famous name were massively promoted by the Nazis?

Radio and TV journalist Eberhard Reuss paints a unique and richly illustrated portrait of the beginnings of German motor racing. Stripping away the myths that surround Hitlers race-track battles, he reveals the deep involvement of the motor industry and its top sportsmen with the Nazi regime.

5-0 out of 5 stars SpeedReaders.info Review
Ever since producing a 1999 documentary on this subject for German television the author perceived a vacuum in the literature about the famous Auto Union and Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrows of the pre-WW II period. Lots of books examine the cars and drivers, and while all provide some basic commentary about the political situation in Germany, none fully exhaust the subject of the "direct involvement of the Nazi regime in financing the teams and using them as naked propaganda."

Based on interviews with the surviving principals and/or their families (von Brauchitsch especially, also Meier, Pietsch, and Hermann Lang's son) and other contemporaries, and research in previously un- or under-examined archives, Reuss has tackled this subject repeatedly in magazines and on radio and TV before writing, in 2006, the German version of this book. A primary point he makes is that, after the war, so many Germans professed to having been nonpolitical during Nazism, no matter that so many luminaries in the auto world held Party office or military rank, even if only honorary, and certainly willingly reaped the benefits of their association with the regime. Moreover, Reuss contends, being "nonpolitical" does not absolve one from "guilt by association" but on the contrary is an indictment itself.

Ideally, the reader's interests would go beyond machinery and motor racing history. While there is plenty of that in the book, it is with constant reference to aspects of the human condition that are ultimately timeless. The book is well and persuasively written but the degree of magnification oscillates between the sometimes pedantically detailed and the overly broad or irrelevant. The photo captions are commendably specific, identifying all the people and locations. The photos are not necessarily new to the record but certainly this combination of political and car-specific imagery will be new to many readers.

Of note is the translator's work whose additions in the form of explanatory chapter notes make the book significantly more accessible to foreign readers and presumes no prior familiarity with German history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional page turner
Exceptionally interesting page turner - prior to reading this, I had no idea how the German racing program of the thirties was so intertwined with Nazi politics.Previously I was primarily interested in the technical aspects of the cars, which have been ably covered by Chris Nixon and Anthony Pritchard in other books and articles. This book covers the political side of the story and it is almost more interesting than the amazingly fast cars Mercedes Benz and Auto Union produced in this period. It provided a whole new perspective on the machines, drivers, and companies involved. This compact hardback book is well-illustrated on high quality paper with a sewn binding; I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in German motorsport and politics in the 1930s.I congratulate Mr. Reuss on producing such a superlative book!

5-0 out of 5 stars No soft picture of the silver arrows
I have been interested in the German Silver Arrow racing teams for several years and have read many books about the cars, drivers, and the political involvement. This is the most comprehensive study I've read so far.
I, like many others, have glossed over the Nazi influence on the German racing scene prior to the war. By that I mean the use Hitler made of sports and the military displays that furthered his message of "German superiority". The author reveals how companies and drivers danced to this tune and refutes post war claims to the contrary.
Because of his research and pros it's no wonder the author has won awards for this book.
I encourage this book to anyone who would like to read a true description of the prewar Grand Prix racing. ... Read more

Product Description
From Lautenschlager to Schumacher, Germany's racing drivers have etched their names at motor sport's very pinnacle. For Mercedes in 1908 and 1914, Christian Lautenschlager won two of the greatest Grands Prix in history. Discovered by Mercedes-Benz, Michael Schumacher went on to win a spectacular seven world championships. Home Marques Porsche, Mercedes-Benz and Auto Union attracted Germany's best drivers from Hans Stuck, Rudy Caracciola and Manfred von Brauchitsch to Hermann Lang, Karl Kling and Hans Herrmann. Theirs were racing cars that were both white and silver, the latter passing into legend with the 'Silver Arrows'.

In these pages Porsche accelerates from plucky underdog to dominant power with its 917, 'Turbo-Panzer' of the Can-Am series, and 956 and 962 endurance racers. Mercedes-Benz teams Juan Fangio with Stirling Moss in the 1950s to sweep both Formula 1 and sports-car classics.

Karl Ludvigsen's dramatic telling of the German saga brings to life the great tracks, the Avus and the Nurburgring, and the cars that raced for Germany from BMW, Adler and DKW to Veritas, Audi and Borgward. Not overlooked are the exploits of such battlers in the class wars as NSU, Stoewer, AFM, Zakspeed, Scampolo, Zoller, AWE, Horch and Ford of Germany.

The glistening silver centerpiece of this unique tribute to Germany's racing cars and drivers is the decade of the 1930s, when the Third Reich controversially backed motor sports to flaunt its skill and power. With its historic contests and sensational racing cars that coruscating decade is still classed as motor racing's Golden Age. This is one book that is certain to have motor racing experts and fans thoroughly exhilarated, enticed and eager for the next installment! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great review of the greatest German race cars
This is a great basic review of the greatest German race cars. There is no better automotive history author than Karl Ludvigsen. When Karl authors a book, you can count on the research being as good as one can get. This is a serious book, not one of those thrown together type of books generally found in the book shops. But, the wirting is not too deep to be beyond the interest level of most readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book binding is falling apart
I have actually checked "YES" for the review comments of Christopher Lim (Substance without flash) which in my opinion is the best comment that describes Ienatsch's book. After reading this book and applying what I have learnt from it to real life, I have realized that I was doing somethings in a wrong way that I thought I understood correctly from Code's book (okay, english is not my native language but my english is not bad). Code's book widened my horizon and gave a lot of valueable information. Ienatsch's book filed in the gaps and made it clearer.

I have only one disappointment about the book but it is not content related. It is about the book itself. I am very careful about my books, I never fold back the pages that I already read to hold the book in one hand, or never try to open them fully or flatten the midsection or so. But this book has just fallen apart after the first reading. Now there is nothing that holds the first 30-35 pages, they are simply separated from the book. I guess the binding quality is not very high. Handle carefully!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sport Ridning Techniques
Good book for everyone who rides a bike. There are no secret, earth shattering revelations, (maybe none exist) but it does contain "all" the tips and skills for advanced riding and should be a part of everyones library. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant read
I was a big fan of the magazine "Sport Rider" while Nick was editor there. I think he has continued an excellent approach/attitude to motorcycling in writing this book. I believe it caters for the full gamut of riders, very experienced to novice. I would rate it right up there with the "Twist of the Wrist" books, it may be of even more value to some people. He manages to get across the information ineasy to understand explanations & excellent colour pictures. If you were just to buy one book about motorcycle riding technique then this should be the one.

4-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ FOR ALL STREET RIDER
Nick Ienatsch makes it easy for anyone to read Sport Riding Techniques. The riding techniques and side stories he discribes are easy to Imagine, and even easer to practice due to the bounty of crystal clear photos available in this book(manual).

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, not great.
I can appreciate Nick's lifelong experience, but as an self-described intermediate rider looking to go that extra step, I found this book MILDLY disappointing.Mostly just common sense. There were a few solid tips and guidelines but nothing revolutionary.Maybe my expectations were a bit misguided."Get as much seat time as possible." "Work on gently using the brakes and throttle."It just seemed geared more toward a rank beginner. Discussions on traction and lean angle were informative but not enlightening. For less than 20 bucks, it's a worthwhile read. That same amount of time spent riding and improving would be just as helpful.

Product Description
As an accomplished racer and a trained engineer, Paul Frre- Le Mans winner, Grand Prix driver, and Road & Track Magazine's European editor-is unusually qualified to discuss both the practical skills necessary to become a top driver and the physics behind vehicle dynamics. Indeed, as 1961 World Driving Champion Phil Hill remarks in his foreword, "It is the analytical ability of Paul the engineer matched to the perception of Paul the race driver that makes "Sports Car and Competition Driving" such a valuable book...Considerable amounts of time can be gained on track by a driver utilizing the countless lessons in this 'textbook'."

First published in 1963, "Sports Car and Competition Driving" sold tens of thousands of copies, establishing it as the definitive book on driving. Now Frre has revised and updated his classic to explain to drivers how to meet the new challenges posed by radical advances in technology.

Frre discusses the physical laws governing a car at speed, giving particular emphasis to the critical areas where the most time is won or lost: the corner. He also recommends proven approaches to practicing, setting up a car, qualifying, passing, and endurance racing-to name only a few of the many topics covered.

With 78 photographs, illustrations and diagrams, including historical shots of greatdrivers in competition, "Sports Car and Competition Driving" is required reading for anyone interested in racing or becoming a more masterful driver on the road. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A thinking man's book to driving fast
This is a thinking person's book, from a great world class driver.Eloquently written and clear advice combined with basic level formulas, photos, and illustrations to get the messages to the reader on multiple planes of communication. Approaching fifty years since it was first released, the immensely practical advice in this book is timeless.Frere provides not just "tips" to drive fast, but concepts and tools to develop your own thinking and analytical skills to learn how to handle all manner of challenges on the road and track. It promotes "safe" as much if not more than fast, and that is all the more reason to have, read, study and practice the lessons it provides.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sports Car and Competition Driving (Driving)
Interesting book. nice anecdotes.all the physics one might want to know is included in there too..

4-0 out of 5 stars A very friendly book!
From the first glance, I liked that book much! It is written in a very friendly tone, clear language! It begins with a large chapter about the driving position; there are lots of photos with the right and wrong poses, with analysis of each case. The evolution of the correct driving position is also exposed. Then goes a chapter about power, torque and when to change the gear to achieve different goals: fuel economy, engine lifetime, maximum speed. After that there is a section about the correct braking and pedaling.

The author has dedicated a large topic of this book to quick and safe cornering, explaining the forces and vectors that act upon the axes and wheels; about the oversteer and understeer, about slipping, sliding and skidding. There are very simple and clear formulas to calculate the total adhesion of a wheel with the road.

The rest of the books is about the sport events: how to prepare and how to perform. Should the generic reader be aware of the contests, right?

The detailed reading of the book has shown some arguable points. For example, the author is glorifying the ABS in one chapter and writes about controlled slide in another chapter, not mentioning the controlled slide is hardly possible with ABS. It seems that the textual fragments which were added in the second edition of the book about the modern whistles-and-bells like ABS are not well aligned with the rest of the book (that's why four stars only) which Paul Frere has published in the first edition, and this original text about physics of cornering is just brilliant!

However, if you liked a better book about cornering and not filled with much information about sport events, I would have recommended numerous textbooks by Professor Tsygankov, who has even a separate textbook about the correct handling of the steering wheel. This subject is almost overlooked by Paul Frere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for drivers of all levels!
Although this book is clearly geared towards people with experience, there are pages dedicated to how to adjust your seat and the mirrors, when and how to brake, using the accelerator for best effect, etc. Everyone can learn something (or a lot) new from this book!

3-0 out of 5 stars AMAZINGLY Technical!
This book is full of formulas for computing maximum theorhetical speed through corners, and the like. The information is presented in a way that people with several seasons under their belts could use, but definitely NOT for the beginner, unless you happen to also hold a PHD in physics. If you are considering writing a video game, THIS is the book for you.It has all the formulas you'll need to make your car handle realistically. ... Product Description

Oulton Park in the late 1960s was one of the last circuits to play host to non-championship Formula 1 races. Set in beautiful Cheshire parkland, it has always been a favorite with drivers who relish its challenging curves and with spectators who could watch their heroes compete on a true road circuit. Drivers such as Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, Graham Hill, Surtees, Rindt and Brabham came to Oulton for the Gold Cup and spectators could see and even meet them in the open paddock atmosphere of the time. Major sports & GT races such as the RAC TT were also on the Oulton Park calendar with Lola T70s, GT40s, Ferraris, Lotii and, of course, Chevrons in the hands of Hulme, Redman, Bonnier and other top drivers. Club race meetings provided variety and plenty of action with the VSCC’s Seaman Trophies meeting for vintage and historic racers being the highlight of the season for many racegoers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Best Buy
After thinking "Brothers Rodriquez" was the best book I had on this era of racing, I got this.Amazing picture clarity....from angles close to the car (dangerously allowed back then). What is most mind boggling is the knowledge contained in most captions....often the car serial number.Driver's name and Team name with tidbits of why the car broke down, how long did the driver live past this event (often losing their life racing somewhere else), and other bits of trivia that fill in gaps in your knowledge. After getting this, I pre-ordered the up coming book featurning 1950-59. I rate this an A++/Must Buy.

I highly recommend this book or any of Paul Parker's books. The titles tell you exactly what you're getting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Memories of a great era
I loved the sports cars of the '60s, and will always remember the Ford/Ferrari battles at Le Mans and the dramatic finish in 1969. Product Description

Graham Hill's career was one of the most remarkable in modern motor racing. It spanned 20 turbulent years in the history of the sport. His first racing cars were the conventional front-engined cars of the 1950s, which were painted in national colors. In his final races, in the 1970s, he drove sophisticated, bewinged rear-engined cars that carried the colors of their commercial sponsors. At his peak in the mid-1960s he was at the forefront of grand prix and sports car racing, competing against the very best drivers of the era - Clark, Surtees, Gurney, Rindt, Stewart. Today his name, along with theirs, evokes one of the classic ages of motor racing. John Tipler's new biography of this determined and popular man recalls the great victories in his long versatile career - his two Formula 1 world championships and 14 grand prix wins and triumph at the Indianapolis 500 and the Le Mans 24 Hours. But he also explores Hill's background and character and shows how his courage and persistence earned him a pre-eminent position as one of the best all-around drivers and outstanding competitors of his day. He also considers Hill's later move from driving to team ownership, a new stage in a tireless career which was so cruelly cut short when he and the principal members of his team were killed in a plane crash in 1975.

5-0 out of 5 stars The classic text that is the cornerstone for establishing the building blocks of driver, car, track and preparation
A classic book providing a foundational treatment of driving technique and analysis, this title has been through more than a dozen printings and remains a relevant, and useful text.Much of what you read in books written fifty years later, was said here first. Clear and easy to understand, this is an important work in the history of describing the art of driving. Taruffi addresses all the foundational components....the driver and his/her preparation mentally and conditioning physically, the car, the track, and driving at the limits. There have been a lot of words put to paper by others to describe the same concepts, with less clarity and precision.Taruffi's observations on vehicle dynamics and driving line are as fresh and relevant today as they were when he was driving with Fangio, Ascari, Nuvolari and the other legends of his era.The treatment is friendly and approachable, even in the technical discussions of slide thrust and slip. The driving line diagrams are simple, and right on target. You don't need color pictures and high resolution graphics, when what you have to say and illustrate is so rock solid. There are plenty of additional details to learn or read about elsewhere, after you read this book (indeed there are entire books devoted to what he covers as a central essence in a single chapter), but there is nothing to read elsewhere that addresses core issues that this book omitted on basic techniques. You can read it, put it away, read a few other books on driving, and then a year later come back and pick it up, and read sections a third, fourth or fifth time with enjoyment and the benefit of being refreshed on fundamentals that we can all use.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Technique of Motor Racing
The condition was listed as used but in very good shape. I was extremely disappointed when the book arrived. The cover on the spine of the book had been sliced through by a box knife. While I could still read the book it was not what I would have considered as in "very good condition".

Product Description

He is the man who created modern-day Formula One. He is both feared and admired for the way in which he masterminded its transformation from an amateur sport of the 1950s into a global billion dollar industry of the 21st century. And now, with his fortune, influence, and power, Bernie Ecclestone has moved into the world of soccer with Renault F1 boss Flavio Briatore to turn Queen's Park Rangers, a struggling west London club, into a serious rival to the capital's glamour club, Chelsea. Overnight, QPR has access to more wealth than Real Madrid, able to compete with the financial backing of Roman Abramovich, Chelsea's Russian billionaire owner. But what makes Bernie run? What lies behind the grim, poker-face of this deal-maker extraordinaire, who, for nearly 40 years, has ruthlessly exploited and dominated Formula One? To many he became the savior of the sport, but there have also been many who have suffered at this hands—the weak and the gullible, the politically naive and unsuspecting. They have a different story to tell. Revealing the unbridled avarice, callousness, and corruption behind the hype of Formula One, this book also shows the warts-and-all character of the man who is now setting his sights on a sport no less decadent.

Product Description
Nick Mason has had a lifelong passion for motor racing. The sports and racing cars he's chosen to own form a unique stable, not just because of their diversity, but because every car is meant to be driven, and driven hard. These are not museum pieces sitting tamely in glass cases. With test driver Mark Hales, Nick Mason has pushed twenty-two of his cars to the limit and created Into The Red, a book which captures the power, the exhilaration and the feel of the actual cars driven by the worlds greatest racing drivers, including Enzo Ferrari, Stirling Moss, Jacky Ickx and Mario Andretti. Some are incredibly fast: the powerhouse Porsche 935, the limited edition McLaren F1. Some extremely rare: the legendary V16 BRM is one of only three known to exist. Some highly expensive: the Ferrari 250GTO had a value of GBP10 million at its peak. And others are all-time classics, including the Bugatti T35B, the Maserati 250F, and the Ferrari T3 that brought Gilles Villeneuve victory in the 1978 Montreal Grand Prix. But although their past is what makes the cars so special, each car has been put through the same demanding test sequence at Silverstone, using the latest equipment, no quarter given. The results are often surprising. Mark Hales details the distinctive sensations, sounds and vibrations of each car's handling ability, down to the feel of the gears and the response of the brakes. Nick Mason gives his personal view of the history and heritage of each model, with the inside track on the ups and downs of collecting classic cars. ... Read more

Once you've read this book, while listening to the included soundtrack, you'll say the same thing "I WANT TO BE NICK MASON"!!! He owns and drives the cars in the book. I'll never be able to do that, but thanks to Nick, he's providing the next best thing with this book. If you enjoy Vintage Race Cars, BUY THIS BOOK! Put the disc in the stereo, crank it up, read along and be taken for a ride!!! ... Read more

This definitive volume tells the full story of Porsche’s famed sports prototype and competition sports cars from 1953-1973. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Work That Porsche Competition Deserves
Porsche: The Sports Racing Cars 1953-72 is a 336 page effort from Haynes Publishing. The 2007 work is from Anthony Pritchard, whose works provide the depth of coverage and detail that a great marque deserves. This work covers the period from the birth of Porsche competition in the 50s, the evolution of the 550 Spyder, Porsche's single seat Formula car program, and the accelerated development that occurred between the Porsche 904 Carrera GTS and the all conquering Porsche 917. Profusely illustrated with literally hundreds of black and white photos and two lengthy color section, this work documents the cars that made Porsche great. These are the years when Porsche went from being the wonderful little underrated giant killer to the most dominant racing program in automobile history.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a gem!
This has to be a one of a kind book! This book to takes you to various race circuits around the world.Although there are several obvious omissions the book is still superb.Colour photos, factual information, diagrams, etc ,make this book a great value and a bargain.

Most motor racing fans will enjoy this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars So where's the Glen?
This is a fabulous book. I wanted to say that so my only nit-pik can be taken in proper context. How, I repeat HOW, can the Watkins Glen circuit in upstate New York have possibly been left out of this book? It's probably because I attended the Grand Prix several times in the late 60's, that I am flabbergasted by this omission. Other than that glaring omission, I loved the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is One Book to Keep on the Coffee Table!
This one is a "no-brainer," for me. If you love auto racing, this book is a MUST HAVE! It doesn't matter what kind of racing circuit you enjoy: NASCAR, Formula One, IRL, CART, it doesn't matter. This book shows the tracks, detailed descriptions of each turn, including highlights of famous races on each course. For circuits that have changed over the years, it even shows the evolution of the changes. With stunning color photos of famous drivers, famous racing moments, and several track perspectives, and even the famous 14 mile Nurburgring circuit from days gone by. This is a book all racing fans should have sitting close by to refer to at a moment's notice.

NOTE: (added 5/19/02) The book only goes up to the 1999 season, so it will not reflect the changes made to Hockenheim, Germany's circuit in the 2002 season. This is a MUST HAVE book if you have an interest in remembering the older, longer Hockenheimring that is now a thing of the past.

5-0 out of 5 stars World Motor Racing Circuits

Following the design, format and idea of the successful "Football: The Golden Age", this book celebrates all aspects of the motor racing world - the drivers, the fans, the race tracks, the cars, the crashes and pit-stops. It goes further to look at the history behind motor racing - the hill climbs, rallies through cities and even the land speed records. 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Pics But Lacks Organization
This coffee-table sized book has a lot of excellent pics of European, and, to a lesser extent, American, auto racing from the early 1900's to the late 1960's.We see pics of the cars, the races, the circuits, the drivers, the spectators, the accidents, and the personalities. There is virtually no text apart from the captions, so many of the pictures raise more questions than they answer.("How did that race car end up on the roof of that house? What was that house doing so close to a race track?Or is it a house? And what happened to the driver?") The pics are thus excellent fuel for the imagination and for further research.

Fans of racing in the 50's and 60's might be disappointed - as I was - that more than half of the pics are from the pre-1950's era. Also, the fact that the pics are not in chronological order - or in any order or grouping - makes it hard to find a particular pic that you might want to show someone.

Still, it's a good price for a book of this size, and the pics are very good, even if weighted towards the old, old days.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book if you only look for beautiful pics of classic cars
I bought this book the last year and I'm very happy with it.

This book is full of very nice, or at least interesting, pics, mostly coming from the first fifty years of motor racing. There are a lot of black & white pictures which would deserve to be not only on this book, but out and hung in a wall :)

If you're looking for something to read about that period this is not your book though, as the only text is the one used to comment each picture briefly.

Apart of the quality of the pics, it has a lot of them indeed. Besides, the book itself is hardcover (I love the way the cover looks) and is well made. So it worths each cent it costs.

In fact, I think is quite cheap, considering the amount of content it has and the price of other books which offer much less than this one.

So, if you're looking a good book of the 'golden years' of motorsports which deserve to be opened from time to time, this one will make you feel captivated again for these cars in the blink of an eye.

Regards

5-0 out of 5 stars The expert was pleased
This was a Christmas gift for a true racing mechanic, the head of the engine department for the last of the old timers, Ed Pink. He loved it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Motor racing fans will find it a top-notch survey leaving little out
The price tag may seem weighty but actually represents a bargain for an outstanding book packed with nearly three hundred vintage images taken from the last century of auto racing in Motor Racing: The Golden Age. Here you'll find some of the most stunning photos of the last century of racing: many have never been seen before, and accompany original and insightful history. Motor racing fans will find it a top-notch survey leaving little out.

Product Description

Motor Racing at Nassau focuses on the vision of one man, Captain Sherman ‘Red’ Crise, and his quest to bring motor racing to the Bahamas. From its stuttering start in 1954, his event rapidly developed in stature to become the most important and prestigious sports car event on the race calendar other than World Championship events. The races started in the mid-1950s and continued for thirteen years, and are described by many commentators as the ‘Golden Age’ of motor racing, where internationally acclaimed drivers attended Nassau to mix with the many amateur racers from America and enjoy the sun, parties and racing. For many drivers, the social scene was as important as the racing, and in later years prize money was an extra incentive to turn up – in 1960, it was claimed to be the highest paying event on the race calendar. Words alone cannot begin to describe the atmosphere generated at the races, so the wealth of previously unpublished photographs together with a complete collection of program covers, and other material accumulated during six years of research, bring real vibrancy to these fascinating race accounts.

2-0 out of 5 stars Motor Racing at nassau Paperback
After having purchased the previous opus related to the Nassau races written by the same author, I expected new data. Unfortunately, the Paperback item only offers two bonus items, a cheap price and a few additionnal photographs. On the negative aspect, you should have a torough knowledge of Sports car Racing to get anything out of this book.
Disappointing is my final word. ... Read more
