Product Description
Contains black and white photos and detailed instructions for each movement. Contents: Translator's Note; Author's Preface; Defence Positions; The Principles of the Blockings, Evasions, and Counter-attacks; The Combinations; Movements of the Leg; Movements of the Hip; Movements of the Shoulder; Movements of the Arm; Sutemis; The Counter-Attacks; Movements of the Leg; Movements of the Hip; Movements of the Shoulder; Movements of the Arm; Sutemis. From the Preface: " 'The combination will lack purity... the counter will not be Judo'. This rather over-simplified idea, once widespread, corresponds perhaps to our need for the Absolute, to a nostalgia for Perfect Movement which we must always seach for and which comes so rarely. Indeed, Judo is practically without limit, as varied as life itself. The movement which succeeds, however, is not isolated in its perfection from what has gone before, but is always the more or less conscious exploitation of an opportunity, happy coincidence of prepared in advance. This exploitation, this instantaneous adaptation to opportunities, this momentary action which could not be other than it is without losing efficacy, perfection and beauty, is always the result of very persevering training; this does not mean to say that it should be disordered or thoughtless." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic and classic advanced Judo book every serious Judo Ka should own.
This is not really a beginners book on Judo. The focus is on advanced techniques and tactics of Judo. This hardcover edition has, in my opinion, the clearest and best photographs I have ever seen in a Judo book. This great text covers 64 techniques in detail that the author has successfully used in his competitive Judo career.Like any martial arts book, one cannot learn the techniques with any degree of skill without training under a competent instructor at the same time. The real value of this book is for the competitive advanced Judo player who has practiced the techniques shown in this text.In conclusion, this book has become a collectors item and would be of great value for any serious Judo player.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author:Martial Art Myths, Season of the Warrior, Never Trust a Politician, Shotokan Karate Self-Defense Techniques, PR-24 Police Baton Advanced Techniques).

5-0 out of 5 stars Perserverance!
This seminal work: FIGHTING JUDO (c. 1985) by Katsuhiko Kashiwazaki, the 1981 World Judo Champion, is a useful work in many ways - not only did it present sixty-four excellent black & white photographs of sophisticated entries into Ne-waza, but also contained insight into the life-long training of an elite Japanese Judo champion while sharing some of his profound Judo philosophy.

In some ways, the author's memoirs contained in FIGHTING JUDO are just as instructive as the Newaza photographs, as Katsuhiko Kashiwazaki related that "If you have no natural talent you can progress with Ne-waza and progress in Ne-waza is more reliable" (p. 10) and how the Japanese sensei's believed "It is absolutely crucial to have a firm foundation in the basics before moving on to more advanced techniques" (p.10) In this way the Japanese distinguished the 'strong' Judoka from the 'champion' (p. 142).

While merely doing routine Judo randori in Japan, the author noted "When I was a high school boy, I broke my right elbow twice and my left elbow once, as well as various fingers and toes ..." (p. 141) and how he was ashamed that he only took second place in the All Japan High School Judo Championships. As an adult, after winning the 1981 World Championships in Maastricht Holland, Katsuhiko Kashiwazaki was bedridden partially paralyzed with an injured neck, another elbow injury, and massive headaches.Yet instead of retiring from Judo, he took a step-down and avoided entering the All Japan Judo Championships for a sixth time to compete in the international Kano Cup.Sporting old and fresh injuries equivalent to those received in a car crash, Katsuhiko Kashiwazaki took the gold medal in an international event that few American Judo players are even good enough to enter!A picture of the author's right hand is shown on page 74 exhibiting the swollen and disfigured fingers from the result of a life-time of Judo.

The powerful work, FIGHTING JUDO, contained photographs of exotic Ne-waza entries used by the author: the "Jumping kansetsu-waza [flying juji-gatame](p. 36-37); a one-armed tomoe-nage (p. 56-57); the Susu-jime (p. 76); Kami-jime (p. 77); Koshi-jime (p. 78); and Ashi-sangaku-garami (p.82) just to name a few of the 'tricks'.The author won ninety percent of his championships with Ne-waza.

The book FIGHTING JUDO would be useful in a college philosophy course as well as in any Judo training center. But this is no hagiography as the self-effacing World Champion Katsuhiko Kashiwazaki reflected: "I was the world champion for a minute; at the most for a day. So when you win a championship, enjoy it for one day, feel that you are a champion for one day. But no more" (p. 18).

As another example of innovative Ne-waza, please read FIGHTING JUDO along with VITAL JUDO (c.1973) by Isao Okano, BEST JUDO (c.1979) by Isao Inokuma, or 'OLYMPIC JUDO: Groundwork Techniques' (c.1986) by Neil Adams, and if used as a work of anecdotal philosophy, please read FIGHTING JUDO in conjunction with WANDERER (c. 1964, 1998) by Sterling Hayden.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite Judo book ever
Kashiwazaki's Fighting Judo is the best Judo book ever written.I trained every technique in the book with Matsamura of the New York Athletic Club in private lessons. We went through the book about 3 or 4 times. There is a broad range of very effective techniques. The pages are nice and big and the photos and instructions allow you to follow along fairly easily. There are some beauties in there! This book is a must for all enthusiasticjudoka.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fighting Judo
this is a review I found online and think it's quite accurate to my feelings.Get the book if you can find it at any cost.

Fighting Judo. Katsuhiko Kashiwazaki. Pelham Books, 1985. This is an inspiring book because, firstly, the photography in this book is matchless. No martial art book conveys the spirit of its art through photography better than this one. Secondly, its author is one of the premier grappling and sutemi waza specialists, and this book reflects his specialty. Thirdly, he is a bit of a philosopher, and it shows through in short sidebars throughout the book. His own story, in a brief chapter at the end, is inspiring, and shows that suffering, which is inherent in the sport aspect of Judo, produces a wisdom and a spirit and a character missing from those martial arts which dabble in the theory of movement without the suffering of defeat. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Complete 7 Katas
This book attempts to clarify the katas.
More focus, illustration, and pictures would have been better. Maybe better to stick with one kata and perfect it.
There are discrepancies between Kodokan and Kawaishi san.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book on judo kata
This book contains descriptions on nage-, katame-, gonosen-, kime-, itsutsu-, ju- and koshiki no kata. The descriptions are not the standard Kodokan-versions. This book was written in the 1950s when the katas were not standardised. Each technique is described in words and with drawings. The drawings are not always clear and they can be a little difficult to understand if you don't know the movements allready.

I cannot recommend this book as a basic learning book for kata, but I think that it is a valuable reading for the judoka interested in kata. You can feel the links to the older and more original judo.

It is also valuable to read the introductions by the author and the translator. They will deepen your knowledge about kata.

Finally: I think that this book is valuable if it is used togehter with another book on kata (for example Judo formal techniques or Kodokan Judo), good kata videos or a personal instructor. ... Read more

Product Description
In 1952 the 24-year-old Yves Klein left Paris for Japan, to pursue his first love; not art but judo. Klein spent a year and a half in Tokyo, studying mainly at the Kodokan under the ninth-dan judo master Oda. After becoming one of the first Europeans to receive a coveted fourth-dan black belt, Klein returned to France and opened the Judo Academie de Paris. In 1954 the prestigious publisher Grasset published his book Les Fondements du Judo, illustrated with hundreds of photographs of Klein and leading Japanese teachers demonstrating the six major "Katas" (the movements that form the basis of judo). The Foundations of Judo is the first ever English translation of this historical document. Translated and typeset in a facsimile of the 1954 original by British artist Ian Whittlesea, it expresses the fundaments of the art that was Klein's foremost passion. ... Read more

This was the first judo book I received as a child. It is nice to have a copy once again since I lent my original to a childhood friend over forty years ago. It is one of the most well constructed studies of tai-otoshi and o-uchi-gari ever. It's premises hold true even today. Excellent book. TP Leggett was one of the most respected judokas in the history of the art. May he rest in peace.

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Judo," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Judo in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Judo when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Judo, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Product Description
2000 YEARS: JIU JITSU AND KODOKAN JUDO is the product of more than 30 years of efforts.

Library research, interviews, worldwide travel, writing and rewriting, editing and re-editing, the development of funding proposals and reports, and other efforts went into the development of this document. This text is an important one for competitors and spectators, for teachers and students, and for all who are interested in the martial arts, Jiu Jitsu, and, particularly, in Judo. But, its importance goes beyond the martial arts. It is a study of the development of a human endeavor, which was momentous in the evolution of Japanese civilization and, in a subtler manner, American, and World history.

The involvement of Roosevelt and Dewey in American Judo is significant and interesting. The tracing of the regional development of Judo in the United States will fascinate judo enthusiasts. The biographical information about the 10th degree black belts and other key figures in Judo are critical to the development of respect for this worthy art.

Competitors and teachers will want to study the growth of Judo techniques from ancient jujitsu practices. Finally, the philosophical bases for current Judo can apply to all aspects of modern life. 2000 YEARS is a 330 page book. The story begins with one of the earliest recorded accounts Jiu Jitsu. Many articles by Donn F. Draeger are included. Part of the book is an instructional section showing techniques by Ryozo Nakamura 8th Dan. Vince Tamura 9th Dan, Takahiko Ishikawa 9th Dan, and Sumiyuki Kotani 10th Dan. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars True History of Judo
Dennis Helm has researched, gathered and organized information from many sources, some which could be difficult to handle in the least!I have heard that this book is disorganized. So was the growth of Judo! This sport means a lot of different things to a lot of different people and was emphasized by very strong egos and intellect. For a beginner in Judo this is a confusing history but a necessary one to read. For the student of Judo this is a text for learning and gaining understanding of the sport. For the Advanced Judoka this fills in many gaps in ideas and concepts as well as how Judo came to be what it is today.
All in all this is a great work.

3-0 out of 5 stars History of Jiu-Jitsu
While this is a well meant home grown labor of love and the history of Jiu-Jitsu in 1900's is what I wanted to read about and that was great by the way. The design and lack of ANY really decent photographs to illustrate the text was a huge dissapointment.
However since I'm really into the history of Jiu-Jitsu. I found the reading quite good and I can ONLY recommend this book to hardcore Judo/Jiu-Jitsu history buffs as the design and lack of illustrations, drawings & decent photographs really hurts this book.
That is really too bad as Dennis Helms heart was in the right place. If this should get a REAL publisher then the art and design needs serious thought and action.Hire a good modern book designer/Art Director mate! This book is NOT for the general public in its current form. That is really too bad and very sad.

5-0 out of 5 stars Martial Arts Explained
Mr. Helm shows by his interesting and in-depth writing on the subject of various martial arts skills that he has many decades of hands-on experience teaching and participating in these disciplines. His vast knowledge of these martial arts is explained so the layman can easily understand the history and meaning of these skills.Seldom does a novice get to read about two-thousand year-old forms of unarmed self-defense by one who is an instructor as well as practitioner of those techniques. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic historical important book on early Jiu-Jitsu.
It is true this book does not really cover Kano's Judo as it was developed for sport.Nevertheless, the importance of this book is that it contains techniques and tactics of early Jiu-Jitsu with an emphasis on self-defense application.I would not call it a complete text on early Samurai Ju-Jitsu; however, the value of this text is its historical importance. In conclusion, anyone involved in the grappling arts will find this book interesting and informative.Rating: 5 Stars (For Historical value). Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Martial Art Myths, Season of the Warrior, Never Trust a Politician, The Shotokan Karate self-defense Manual: Practical karate for the street, Monadnock Defensive Tactics System, Use of the Monadnock Straight Baton, PR-24 Police Baton Advanced Techniques).

5-0 out of 5 stars Kano Ryu Jiu-Jitsu -- Pre Kodokan Judo +++
It seems to this reviewer that "The Complete Kano Jiu-Jitsu" is indeed a complilation of Kano Ryu Jiu-Jitsu as the title claims -- indeed not yet Kodokan Judo -- certainly not post-1960 Modern Judo. By the way -- this reviewer sees great value in each and all of those three phases. Yes, there is a lack of systematic clinching into kuzushi off-balancing play into grappling play -- as in Modern Judo. Rather, counter-attack entry angles are used to go directly into kicks, blows, throws, chokes, locks and pins. Indeed, the techniques totally lack a division into sports-play versus self-defense -- and are quick and pragmatic solutions to particular attack-positions.

There is no hint of Nage no Kata, Ju no Kata, Kime no Kata and Gokyo no Waza, as others have noticed. Rather, we seem to be seeing a personal variation [likely with some Tsutsumi Hozan Ryu] of Kano Ryu -- a blend of Kito Ryu, Fusen Ryu, Tenshin Shinyo Ryu, and other Jiu-Jitsu with modern jiu-jitsu adaptations. Such a blend was later formally re-organized into Kodokan Judo. As far as overlap between pre Kano Ryu Jiu-Jitsu and post Kodokan Judo goes -- in Japan before World War II there were still fairly large independant jiu-jitsu schools and Kodokan Judo was still growing into its leading influence. There were numbers of hybrid jiu-jitsu blends with Kodokan -- even within the judo circles. Afterall, Jigaro Kano aquired a team of jiu-jitsu adepts [18 of them, including of the schools noted above] to help create Kano Ryu Jiu-jitsu and Kodokan Judo. Folks search far-and-wide for "the jiu-jitsu which became judo" [such as Kito Ryu] -- and here it is in public view in "The Complete Kano Jiu-Jitsu" +++

5-0 out of 5 stars Kano Jiu Jitsu
This book is an excellent reproduction of the 1927 original print, which we have at our Judo club in Canterbury Kent UK. The original would cost around £300 no counting for the fact its signed by jui jitsu players of the time in 1930. The original techniques or tricks as they are called in the book are still extremely relevant today. For the Jui Jitsu player whether kano or Brazillian there are many techniques you will probably not have seen which are well worth trying. It is a must for the book shelf of the committed grappler.

5-0 out of 5 stars History Alive
Actually this is a historical tome of some note.Interesting but very hard to learn from. The point of this book is to show training as it was when Judo was first developed.Every JuJutsuist and Judoka should have this in his/her library.
Worth the price and the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars The roots of modern Jujutsu
Many people know Kano created Judo, but few know of his contribution
to Jujutsu.

The roots of modern Jujutsu began at the end of the 19th Century
when Kano Jigoro was given the task of taking the old, separate schools
of Jujutsu, taking the best of what was, and creating a hand=to-hand
combat school befitting the new, modernised Japan. This new art,
Kano Jujutsu was adopted rapidly by schools and military, as well as
progressing overseas, gaining practitioners and advocates such as Theodore
Roosevelt. Kano Jujutsu still survives in martial arts schools, albeit in
very few, and as hand-to-hand combat in many modern militaries.

The Complete Kano Jujutsu is a reprint of the classic text, demonstrating
many techniques, as well as an introduction to Kuatsu (healing and first
aid techniques).

This is not a book for beginners, as requires knowledge of techniques,
but serves well to augment training. A must have for people want to
delve deeper into martial arts. ... Read more
