5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for teenagers or young adults
This book teaches 61 short but excellent lessons concerning self defense. What impressed me most was that I was able to learn all these lessons in my back yard with a friend at the age of 16. My age now is 70 years old. Over the years I have used the methods taught to literally protect myself in several "bad guy" attacks, but more importantly these are methods that will allow you to control an encounter with out over reacting. By these I mean if some one is horsing around or just trying to bully you, you can turn the tables on him without smashing him up badly. If you need to the book will show you how to quickly end attacks with the force needed. If I had a son or grandson I would purchase this for him.
I have kept this book for over 50 years, but I do not want it to end up in the trash so I may add my own book to the three that are now for sale. Highly recommended! ... Read more

Product Description
2000 YEARS: JIU JITSU AND KODOKAN JUDO is the product of more than 30 years of efforts.

Library research, interviews, worldwide travel, writing and rewriting, editing and re-editing, the development of funding proposals and reports, and other efforts went into the development of this document. This text is an important one for competitors and spectators, for teachers and students, and for all who are interested in the martial arts, Jiu Jitsu, and, particularly, in Judo. But, its importance goes beyond the martial arts. It is a study of the development of a human endeavor, which was momentous in the evolution of Japanese civilization and, in a subtler manner, American, and World history.

The involvement of Roosevelt and Dewey in American Judo is significant and interesting. The tracing of the regional development of Judo in the United States will fascinate judo enthusiasts. The biographical information about the 10th degree black belts and other key figures in Judo are critical to the development of respect for this worthy art.

Competitors and teachers will want to study the growth of Judo techniques from ancient jujitsu practices. Finally, the philosophical bases for current Judo can apply to all aspects of modern life. 2000 YEARS is a 330 page book. The story begins with one of the earliest recorded accounts Jiu Jitsu. Many articles by Donn F. Draeger are included. Part of the book is an instructional section showing techniques by Ryozo Nakamura 8th Dan. Vince Tamura 9th Dan, Takahiko Ishikawa 9th Dan, and Sumiyuki Kotani 10th Dan. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars True History of Judo
Dennis Helm has researched, gathered and organized information from many sources, some which could be difficult to handle in the least!I have heard that this book is disorganized. So was the growth of Judo! This sport means a lot of different things to a lot of different people and was emphasized by very strong egos and intellect. For a beginner in Judo this is a confusing history but a necessary one to read. For the student of Judo this is a text for learning and gaining understanding of the sport. For the Advanced Judoka this fills in many gaps in ideas and concepts as well as how Judo came to be what it is today.
All in all this is a great work.

3-0 out of 5 stars History of Jiu-Jitsu
While this is a well meant home grown labor of love and the history of Jiu-Jitsu in 1900's is what I wanted to read about and that was great by the way. The design and lack of ANY really decent photographs to illustrate the text was a huge dissapointment.
However since I'm really into the history of Jiu-Jitsu. I found the reading quite good and I can ONLY recommend this book to hardcore Judo/Jiu-Jitsu history buffs as the design and lack of illustrations, drawings & decent photographs really hurts this book.
That is really too bad as Dennis Helms heart was in the right place. If this should get a REAL publisher then the art and design needs serious thought and action.Hire a good modern book designer/Art Director mate! This book is NOT for the general public in its current form. That is really too bad and very sad.

5-0 out of 5 stars Martial Arts Explained
Mr. Helm shows by his interesting and in-depth writing on the subject of various martial arts skills that he has many decades of hands-on experience teaching and participating in these disciplines. His vast knowledge of these martial arts is explained so the layman can easily understand the history and meaning of these skills.Seldom does a novice get to read about two-thousand year-old forms of unarmed self-defense by one who is an instructor as well as practitioner of those techniques. ... Product Description
The Guard is the quintessential Brazilian Jiu Jitsu position. Other martial arts assume that once someone is on their back that the fight is over. But that assumption is unfounded. Fights don’t end just because they hit the ground. For the jiu jitsu man the fight has only just begun. The Guard is a detailed analysis of core concepts, details, and techniques key to success for ground fighting.Author Joe Moreira reveals secrets of his guard technique developed and refined over his thirty five years studying and teaching martial arts. In this volume he shares the fundamentals of his jiu jitsu, the specific details needed to make it work, and technique ranging from beginning to advanced. The philosophy in this book and of Moreira teaching style is that it is better to understand groups of moves/options from given positions, than isolated moves. This is an exposition of sequences of moves from specific situations, not a collection of random moves. The Guard shows not only how to attack or defend from a position but also how to respond to an opponent’s likely reactions.Continuing in the model of Grappling Arts Publications first volume, Passing the Guard, The Guard provides a revolutionary approach in its visual presentations. Techniques are shown from multiple angles. Key points are illustrated. Photo sequences are laid out in intuitive easy to follow patterns. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Jiu Jitsu book(s)
I own all 3 books by Joe Moreira and Ed Beneville. These books are very good, provide a lot of detail, and many pictures from multiple angles. If you want to improve your guard game, buy this book (and the others).

5-0 out of 5 stars Most BJJ books...
...don't show anything a blue belt doesn't know. This book is great, FULL of info. Buy this and Passing the Guard, you won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A BOOK YOU WANT
I have studied the martial arts for 40 years. For 15 of those 40 years I studied brazilian jiu-jitsu. I had to add this book to my library. The details in this book are great.Joe and Ed are a good team, you get a look at Joe's teching style and Ed's writing style. This book will give you a better understand of the guard play in brazilian jiu-jitsu, how to put together groups of moves. Detailed Photos from multiple angles.Whether a beginner or an advanced Martial artist this book can be a great reference guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid
Aside from the guidence of instructors Tyrone Glove and Mike Fowler, I've used this book and lots of excerpts [...]to help me visualize my guard attack; which has become pretty nasty for a white belt.I review the very detailed illustrations in this book on a regular basis, and use thefront and back blank white pages as a diary of subs I've gotten and new techniques learned.I love to pull and attack from guard, with the help of good flexibility and regular yoga, I plan a more detailed study of Eddie Bravos material on rubber guard and attacks from half and full guard. This book was the first place I started though, and I'm glad I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for BJJ players
Excellent! This and Passing the Guard are very well done. I think they may have used too much space sometimes for drills that are simplistic (e.g. p.28-29, 32 pics showoing Moriera spinning his legs?). But the detail, as in the first, is better than I have seen in any Bjj book. The Gracies should take note. With the exception perhaps of Rodrigo's Path to Black Belt and Peligro's The Essential Guard. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good basic guide to some practical self-defense techniques.
This paperback was originally published in the 1950s so the photographs are somewhat dated.Nevertheless, the majority of the material has some good solid practical self-defense information. This book does not focus on philosophic concepts of combat but merely shows a wide variety of responses to various attacks. This book covers how to defend against grabs, pushes, chokes, and punch attacks.Though there are some impractical movements shown, the vast majority of material is fairly solid. In conclusion, if you are seeking a no-nonsense simple approach to street combat, you will want to get a copy of this book.Rating: 4 Stars.Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Monadnock Defensive Tactics System, Use of the Monadnock Straight Baton, PR-24 Police Baton Advanced Techniques, Martial Art Myths, Season of the Warrior, Never Trust a Politician).

4-0 out of 5 stars interesting
a 1959 book describing blowsa few holdsthrows and trips for use in offense and some defense as the author states ''the essence of success in the method of american judo is speed, combined with a complete knowledge of theproper moves based on the element of surprise''.it applied backthen as much as that applies for today.nothing really dazzlingjust looks effective to me .course i lean toward older methods anyway .interesting little book.thank you

5-0 out of 5 stars Just a bag of tricks, but a darn good bag of tricks!
Some books about fighting are heavy on philosophy, or history of a "system" or "style". I'm not making fun of them, because there are systems and styles that I like a lot.

This is a different sort of book. Little less talk, little more action.

The photos are perfectly good but they aren't museum quality. They aren't pretty at all. There is no consideration whatsoever to esthetics in this book.

This is a legitimate tough guy from a tough era talking about a bag of tricks. The book is heavy on demonstration in a LOT of grubby little pictures, and light on talk.

If you practice nothing but the techniques in this book, you'll be more effective than you were before.

Note that this edition probably doesn't contain the eye gouge waza. The author discusses and illustrates his favorite approach to an eye gouge, and the editors, in their infinite wisdom, left it out. They also left out an illustration of a groin attack.

My guess is that you'll find them on the internet if you look for them.

Anyway, if you've ever had an interest in expanding your bag of tricks, this is a cheap, easy, effective source.

And some of these are pretty nasty (if the editors took out the eye gouge and one groin attack, they left in plenty of other down anddirty stuff), so don't give this one to your eight-year old grandchild.

Just reading this book tells you AGAIN why you really, really don't want to get into fights. Somebody may have been reading the unedited version of this thing!

Don't buy this book if you want a coffee-table-sized, beautifully photographed book full of artistic martial arts techniques. This is straight-up tough guy stuff from another era. And this guy had a lot of experience and useful stuff between his ears.

A somewhat comparable book is "Strictly Street Stuff".This book makes fewer choices for you. It provides a smorgasbord of techniques, and let's you decide which ones you want to spend time practicing (because nothing works without practice).

4-0 out of 5 stars COMBAT CLASSIC
