4-0 out of 5 stars A classic
H. Irving Hancock has always been good at recording the introduction of Judo/Jiu-Jitsu to the west. Many techniques that modern JJ/BJJ players think are 'new' can be found in the pages of Hancock's books.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bah.
A total waste of time. Another book that tries to hold on to the classic, outdated, inneffective techniques of a forgotten age of martial arts.

4-0 out of 5 stars Historical title, which still has valuable info!
In the last few years a sensation has been created in the martial arts world by the dominance of an offshoot of jiu-jitsu in inter-style competitions. However, it pales in comparison to the sensation caused bythe first appearance of jiu-jitsu in the West. Every match for the Japaneseartists then was an inter-style competition, usually with a boxer orwrestler and usually giving away a weight class or more, and thejiu-jitsuka more than held their own. This reprint of one of the veryfirst Oriental martial art manuals in English, focuses largely on specifictechniques and strategies used to defeat boxers. While Hancock wasobviously completely enamored with the Japanese art, he neverthelesscommunicated its principles, and some largely forgotten techniques verywell. This book will be of greatest value to a student who already hassome familiarity with judo, jiu-jitsu, or a modern derivative like aikido. The student of turn-of-the-century physical culture will find it valuableas well. ... Product Description
Unlike most other martial arts, jiu-jitsu involves no spectacular throws and kicks and no ceremonial bows. Unlike boxing, it has no punching. And unlike virtually every other fighting technique, it does not rely on brute strength. Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a form of self-defense that takes place almost entirely on the ground although its falling techniques from a standing position are a distinctive mark among competitors. Fighters use snakelike grappling moves to choke their opponent, or, with the weight of their entire body, they press against key joints, bringing them close to the breaking point.

This practical guide builds on its predecessor Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Basic Techniques, offering specific intermediate and advanced instruction as well as illuminating historical context. Acclaimed author Fabio Gurgel explains the discipline’s origins with the ancient Samurai; its seminal place as the father of the major Japanese martial arts, including judo and aikido, as well as its influence on karate. Gurgel describes the mental techniques of jiu-jitsu that have made him one of the sport’s superstars, teaching how to achieve self-confidence, self-esteem, stress relief, and an increased ability to focus. Written in a clear, accessible style and incorporating a wealth of black-and-white photographs, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Advanced Techniques offers world-class training to help readers realize their ultimate potential in this popular art. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Well Worth the Price...
Like the author's first book, it is a fairly simple to use, straightforward and overall good piece of work on this subject. While it may not be as flashy or comprehensive as some other books, it does serve as a good tool for those trying to learn these techniquies.

I would say that you can't go wrong adding it to your library.

3-0 out of 5 stars An old classic on police tactics.
Many police officers collect old law enforcement material. As a former police trainer I collect books dealing with police defensive tactics. This text was originally published in 1930.The author was an internationally famous Jiu-jitsu instructor at that time. He developed a basic Jiu-jitsu course for law enforcement officers in the 1930s, and the same course was also taught to the FBI, as well as to members of the U.S. Navy, Marines and U.S. Army.Though this book is only 56 pages long, it contains over 40 techniques. The photos are old and not very clear, but you can still understand the techniques by reading the captions. Some of the techniques and do not show enough detail; nevertheless, many of the techniques demonstrated are just as valid today as they were in 1930.In conclusion, if you are into the history of police tactics and self-defense, you will want this small volume in your personal collection.Rating:3 stars.Joseph J. 4-0 out of 5 stars Impressive Illustrations!
I had purchased the Kuntao Jiu-Jitsu Immediate Survival book with the curiosity of "Can I actually do this?"To my surprise, the techniques that are demonstrated in this book are techniques that ordinary human beings are capable of doing, not television stunt men! Under the table of contents, the first chapter that stuck out as interest for me was the one on Rape Prevention. There is also a section of Modified Defenses, which is quite amazing, these are defenses used by people who are confined to a wheelchair.I was very impressed with the variety of defense methods that are taught as well as clearly illustrated throughout this book. This book reveals step-by-step instructions on how to perform realistic defenses that can protect you if you ever find yourself as the victim of an unfortunate situation.I like the fact that this manual allows you to learn these basic moves in the comfort of your own living room.I've used my sister as well as my boyfriend as my personal Uki (I didn't know what one of these were till I read the book!)

4-0 out of 5 stars A Letter Written To The Author
Dear Marc,

I found the self-defense section of particular interest because of the very good photographs and clear descriptions of how to react effectively even though one might not be in good physical condition. I am more than slightly "over the hill" and there were definitely detailed moves that even I could do. Your book should be required reading for teenage and older girls, as well as young women. You are to be congratulated for the contents of the book, and your editors for the clear descriptions and layout.

Sincerely,
Mary B.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Self-defense System
As a Black Belt in another style of jujitsu, Soke-dai Bochner impresses me presenting Kuntao Jiu-Jitsu as an all-around system of self-defense in a easy to learn syllabus style format. In the first 142 pages, he does an excellent explanation of self-defense principles, Kuntao Jiu-Jitsu concepts, basic footwork, leg and hand striking, and strategies against possible adversaries. The next 60 pages he presents break falls, joint locks, chokes, throws, takedowns, and ground fighting techniques associated with most jujitsu systems. There are about 30 pages devoted to Arnis stick and knife survival. The final 65 pages or so deals with specific self-defense techniques against street graps, chokes, striking attacks, gun defenses, scenario training, and rape prevention.

Whereas, the technique pictures are small (due to the number needed), the closeup pictures (also small) help the reader to see and figure out what's happening. Whereas, I may have small differences of opinion about a few statements made or how a few techniques are performed, I highly recommend it to beginners and intermediate martial artists but also as a review of self-defense to the more expert.

The best recommendation I can give is that I also intend to buy his Intermediate Survival book and his 6 DVD Box set!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars KUNTAO Ju-jitsuis the real deal
This is a great read. The author goes into great detail, and the illustrations were outstanding. I highly reccomend this book for anyone who wants to be able to defend themselves in today's violent society.

5-0 out of 5 stars great martial arts book
I recomend this book to any one who is interested in learning to defend themselves or any martial artist looking to expand their arsenol of attacks.I am currently a Nidan(second degree black belt) and the techniques described in this book are very similar to the techniques taught in my system so I know from experience that they work. The techniques in this book are very simple to comprehend therefore I give this book a five star rating.

2-0 out of 5 stars Only For Those Who Know No Better!!! Bad!!!
If you are a newbie to the martial arts, or some rank-struck kid with dreams of being a master, than maybe this would be considered a good book. However, if you already have a library of MA books, or have already spent years in the arts, you will be wise to avoid the frustration of buying this one.
"Soke-dai" (another one of those new terms that never appeared in traditional usage) supposedly took from 8 different arts to create this new style. Yet, admittedly, he never directly studied all of 8 of these arts from instructors. So, how can he blend or teach what he never actually studied?
Each of the individual arts that this man mentions allows for the full spectrum of skills that he claims to have taken from all of them. Therefore, through his claims, he reveals that he knows little more than the basics of even the one style he has learned.
It was a nice try at scientific rationalization, but those of us know who know better (after years of training/ fighting) have found this to be a great disappointment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great all around
Although I have studied martial arts since being a child, I have never seen a style so practical as this. Many other styles I have studied under have focused on practicing meaningless forms and competing in tournaments that have no application to the real world. This book's focus is on surviving a fight on the street. Although it has copious techniques included, it also gives strategies for defusing a dangerous situation. All and all, it will help the novice learn basic self defense and the advanced martial artist in seeing martial arts in a new way. Great job! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great little self- defense manual from a historical perspective.
As a lifetime student of the martial arts, in the past I've collected just about every book and manual on the martial arts that I could get my hands on, including this old gem. This 67 page manual with more than 200 illustrations covers the basic self-defense techniques of numerous combat systems. The introduction explains the purpose of the manual, which is to teach practical self-defense techniques and tactics. The second chapter covers the target areas and pressure point areas. The third chapter gives the basic principles of how to condition the karate weapons and how to defend against various attacks. The fourth chapter provides the basic principles of judo. The fifth chapter explains how jiu-jitsu can be used for self-defense.The sixth chapter teaches the basic techniques of savate. The seventh chapter deals with the basic principles of Aikido and the final chapter shows how to use combinations in self-defense situations. One of the things I like about this little manual was the clear drawings showing each technique.

In conclusion, like all self-defense texts, you cannot learn the techniques from merely reading this book. However, the value of this old manual is in the historical aspects. If you are a collector of ancient and early self-defense books, you will want this manual.Rating:4 Stars.Joseph J. 3-0 out of 5 stars A good primer on various arts but mainly on jujitsu

4-0 out of 5 stars A fair basic guide to JuJitsu Locks and Holds.
For those interested in learning formal Aikido methods, there are numerous books on the market that would be a better choice than this text. However, if you are into a Jujitsu art that includes finger, wrist, and armlocks, this book will be of some value for you.As I have mentioned in other reviews of Tegner's books, one of the things the author has done is to take the mysticism out of the martial arts.He explains the developement of Aikido and the role Jujitsu played in this process. In conclusion, this book would be of interest to most martial artists who are into the grappling arts rather than the striking arts.Rating:4 Stars. Joseph J. 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book on the Bruce Tegner's own method of self-defense.
Even though the late Bruce Tegner was often ignored or criticized by many traditional martial artists; nevertheless, he has provided solid information on numerous martial arts through his books. This particular book was one of his best because it provided a integrated basic and simple method of self-defense.I had no idea this book would have become collector's item, but it may be because it is out of print. This book covers blocks, strikes, throws and numerous self-defense techniques taken from judo, jujitsu, karate and aikido. This is the author's own system of self-defense, which he calls JUKADO.In conclusion, if you can obtain a copy of this book, you are lucky. This book is for anyone interested in self-defense.
