Product Description
This magical picture book tells the story of Emily, a little girl who watches graceful skaters on an icy pond and wishes she could skate with them. She gathers her courage and gives ice skating a try, but quickly finds out how difficult it is. She struggles and wobbles, and finally loses her balance and has a fall. But Emily doesn't give up. She begins to make progress when she goes to skating class, and after much practice Emily is ready to take part in an ice dancing show. Each of this attractive book's illustrations includes tabs for young readers to pull and wheels for them to turn. These featuresadd movement to the illustrations and animate Emily's progress as an ice dancer. The book's final two-page spread presents a spectacular pop-up, in which Emily, star of the ice dancing show, actually performs a spin before a cheering audience. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice
I must have read this a thousand times between the ages of 10 and 12.Everything about it delighted me.I loved the reality and sharpness of the characters.I loved their friendship. It was comforting.

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVED IT!
To make it short, the summery of the story was this: Samantha gets really sick even before the book happens which causes her to drop out of a high class dance boarding school. She comes to live back home with her parents who never want her to be part of any kind of spor again. While at her new highschool, she meets Alex, star hockey player. He also does pairs ice dancing, but he just ditched his dance partner, cause shes really bratty. Sam and Alex partner up and compete. Thats pretty much the basics of the story, but with all the details it was a really great book, both Alex and Sam have attitudes, which makes it even more fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strongly recommended
I must have read this and "Ice Princess" the follow-up book at least 20 times in the past few years. 4-0 out of 5 stars Dated but an excellent reference!
This manual has been in print in various formats since 1966. My copy is the 1981 reprint. Since then, there have been numerous changes to the USFSA test schedule which means that the book doesn't have the newer dances suchas the Hickory Hoedown and Cha Cha. You'll notice that there wasn't aPre-Bronze test then and these days we thankfully don't have to test theThree Lobe Waltz to pass Pre-Gold!

However, the information in this bookis timeless. If you're a dancer and you've ever wanted to know exactly whatthe judges expect of you at each level, this is the book for you. Commonmistakes are listed for each dance as well as whether these mistakes areminor which will allow the dance to still be passable when testing, ormajor which will result in a failing mark.

In addition, there aresections on dance terminology, general judging principles, and musicalrhythms. There are numerous diagrams that are easily understandable andsome good photographs.

If you can find a copy of this book anywhere, snapit up. You won't regret it! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Witty, Readable and Irreverent
Leftist activist Abbie Hoffman (1936-1989) writes with surprising clarity and wit in this collection penned during his days on the run during the mid-late 1970's.Hoffman describes life as a fugitive (via drug charges) and provides his take on the state of U.S. society during those years - though Hoffman was more tied to the 1960's.Some of these written pieces are better than others; I enjoyed his hilarious masquerading as Playboy's restaurant critic in Paris, and his look at Pat Robertson's emerging CBN broadcasting networkHe also offers support for the environment, mocks the FBI (which was searching for him), critiques the Carter Administration, etc. There are some laughs here, plus irreverence, foolishness, and Hoffman's slightly offbeat view.

Hoffman was a spotlight grabber, but his bad manners in the highly-questionable Chicago Seven trial (he often insulted the judge) and those of his codefendants and attorneys earned convictions for contempt of court, and did little for the anti-Vietnam cause.Still, rebels, progressives, and those that enjoy gonzo journalism should like both this book and those of Hunter S. Thompson.

5-0 out of 5 stars My first Abbie Hoffman book and what turned me into a fan.
I picked up this book in 10th grade and everyone that saw me read it thought that I had an interest in Square Dancing. When I said that he was talking about the disappointment he felt in the Carter administration, theythought that I was talking about the Hostage Crisis which was just a smallpart of it.

Even though it is written in the 70s, this is aquintessential book for anyone obsessed with 60s counterculture. AbbieHoffman living on the run writes everything from the perspective of theYippie extraordinaire. From posing as a restaurant critic to mocking PatRobertson to expressing disappointment in the first liberal DemocraticPresident since Johnson, Abbie Hoffman's perspective is one ofdissatisfaction coupled with love of America. He will be missed.

Whatparticularly impressed me with this book was the anti-myth stance. Hoffmanknows that he created the myths of the 60s hippie more than anyone else, but he downplays the "voice of a generation" stance. When hereviews a movie with an Abbie Hoffman inspired character, he is fightingfor his own personal honor. There's also a decidely refreshing anti-PCstrain running through the book. This man fights for the environment, fights for the dignity of the human and is fiercely anti-war, but hedoesn't dismiss his critics as idiots. He also refrains from getting intoacademic polemics that have killed more than one student organization thatsets out to do something decent and ends up fighting. When I read TheStrawberry Alarm Clock I was utterly turned off by the pompous maincharacter and his "everyone hates us so we hate everyone" stance.Sadly the SAC narrator is the majority and people like Abbie Hoffman arethe minority.

Throughout this book there is a strong moral stance, maybenot on the sexual, monetary or drug front but on the shared humanity. Hespeaks for compassion, the environment and the human even at his mostfoolish. The essay where he mocks Pat Robertson there is a gentleness tothe mockery, as if Pat Robertson doesn't know what a mockery he is makingof himself.

Great essays include the title one about the Carteradministration, the essay about the 700 Club, and the last one concerningbuilding an environmental movement in upstate New York. Other essays aredated, but for the most part this is. . . an outstanding. . . book. Abbie Hoffman will be missed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Through the eyes of Abbie Hoffman
This is an interesting collection of articles written by Abbie when he was on the run. Needless to say, some are better than others, but all in all, it is Hoffman from many aspects. We see him as the Prankster touring theFederal Bureau if Investiongation while he is on the wanted list.He isthe invisible man at a party in New York.He is the activist in fightingthe dredging of the river and he is the social commentator going throughthe newspaper and noting how strange parts of the world have become.

Someof the articles are a trip down memory lane or at least another perspectiveon history.Others are still relevent today.Obviously, his tips forgoing underground are outdated in today's world - but the commentary of thelanguage of thethe public relations of the U.S.and the translation ofthe news still holds today.Only the names of the leaders and countrieshave changed. ... Product Description

"Scott is a charming writer who douses the reader with lush descriptions of the jaunty era that produced these men, of the love some found with Eskimo women, of the brutal choices that befell them."Star Tribune (Minneapolis)

"Gripping. . . . Scott paints a vivid and riveting picture of the experiences of these men . . . an exhilarating, fascinating story"Library Journal

"A stunning addition to the best-selling arctic exploration genre . . . a breathtaking adventure story."Publishing News

"One of the most gripping stories to emerge from the polar regions."Daily Telegraph

In 1930, fourteen young men with barely a shred of experience between them traveled to the Arctic and stayed there for a year. In that time, led by Gino Watkins, they charted the east coast of Greenland, discovered a mountain range, ate polar bears, and taught the Inuit people to dance the Charleston.

But their journey was touched by extreme hardship and tragedy as well as success. One of the party, August Courtauld, was forced to spend the winter alone on the icecap. For six weeks he was trapped in his lightless cave, clinging to life and his sanity as his supplies dwindled and his companions mounted a desperate, last-ditch rescue attempt.

Dancing on Ice is at once a classic adventure story, a compelling study of humanity stretched to its limits, and a vivid portrait of the last great age of exploration.

Jeremy Scott is Gino Watkins' nephew and the son of J.M. Scott, who also took part in the exhibition.

4-0 out of 5 stars More Arctic Adventure
Accounts of polar exploration, with their repeating elements of frostbite and raw seal-eating, are strangely addictive, and after getting through the classics of the genre you may find yourself casting around for more.DoI is a solid addition to the compendium:the story of a group of college-aged upper-class Brits who head to coastal Greenland to map out the place in advance oftranscontinental airplane routes.

The characters are well-described and the story is compelling. The author has useful opinions about the nature of risk-taking and the tone of leadership on the expedition, as successfully set by the quite young and effete leader of the group. There are frank and interesting descriptions of inuit life and the collision of sexual mores as explorers interact with natives. The writing is a little uneven and as the expedition fragments into different small teams the narrative struggles to keep up; but these are small faults. Those interested in the topic will find it a compelling and enjoyable read.

If you are new to the 'early 20th century polar explorers' or 'cold weather survival' genres there are many books also worthy of a look -- certainly, 'Endurance' and 'Land of the White Death', 'We Die Alone,' maybe 'The Long Walk', or 'Shadows on the Wasteland.'And, if you love DoI, also take a look at "Ada Blackjack", a contemporaneous account of a similarly young American expedition that does not fare so well.

Product Description
Dancing on Ice?- a Journey Toward Partnership in Healthcare; a Patient's Perspective The author's express wish is that anyone and everyone reading this book will be enabled to take a step forward in their lives.Intended as a learning resource; to motivate, and to inspire clinical students, and trainers, healthcare policymakers and practitioners. Most texts about health services are written by academic writers, who recommend particular models from policy to practice.Few texts are written from a (micro) patient's perspective, which explore the experience of illness within its many social contexts. This lively,tongue-in-cheek, docu-soap-style will also strike a chord with anyone who has had the misfortune to be a patient! Rosie, the central character blazes a trail of hope, engaging the talents of health-co-workers,a Consultant Clinician, and two Managers in building partnership.Dancing on Ice..." underlines the fragility of clinician-patient relationships in time-bound situations.Rosie is on a quest... She draws on examples from traditional farming practices and education, along with contemporary health-based care.Whilst negotiating the "snakes and ladders" of her own care she is constantly asking,What is/should be the nature of that care? It's about how we communicate with each other. If communication is better joined-up, then the National Health Service( and any healthcare service) can be more sustainable and value-for-money.This focus makes "Dancing on Ice..." a "must have" item for clinical and medical trainers and students. It will also have appeal for sociology, psychology and organisational learning fields, with its qualitative research approaches. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Tale about a Wonderful Couple!
Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean look and act the part on ice reminiscent to Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers on ice. But off the ice, they lead separate lives and married other people probably wisely. Jayne is married to American sound engineer, Phil Christensen who they met and fell in love on one of the ice tours in 1994. Chris' relationships with French Canadian skater, Isabelle Duchesnay ended in divorce. SHe and her brother were Chris' protege in the 1992 Winter Olympics and only won a disappointing Silver Medal. Jayne is a lot less controversial and likable. Anyway Chris divorced Isabelle and married American skater and US champion ladies' Jill Trenary. They are reportedly living in America with their two children. Torvill and Dean are no longer a skating couple but their legacy is quite unforgettable. When they won their first world ice dance championships conquering the Russians, they were awarded an M.B.E.(Member of the Order of the British Empire). Their coach Betty Callaway received one in 1984 as well. During 1984, they set records and an unforgettable four minutes on the ice dancing to Ravel's Bolero. They should have been elevated to an O.B.E. then but that didn't happen until 1999 after they retired from the sport. While other athletes have become dames and knights, Torvill and Dean returned one more time in 1994 to a disappointing Olympic Bronze medal. 1994 was probably a forgettable year in figure skating for those of us who learned that the beautiful sport is filled with jealousy, rivalry, and ugly hatred that makes the sport look as brutal as any other off the ice. Anyway, Torvill and Dean are not like that. They play by the rules even though between 1992 and 1994, the ice dancing rules became so restrictive from music to moves that it is any wonder that the great era of ice dancing was between 1984 and 1992. Since then, it has been a shadow of it's old glorious self. Of course, Dean and Torvill now coach and lives far apart. They were awarded the OBE way too late. Their legacy will not be forgotten. Jayne is a classy lady and quite forgiving compared to other skaters. It's nice that Dean is creative without losing his masculinity. God bless both Jayne and Chris and their futures. ... Read more
