Excerpt: The All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship of 1992 was the 106th edition of Irelands premier hurling knockout competition. The championship ran from May to September of that year, culminating with the All-Ireland final, held at Croke Park, Dublin on . The match was contested by Kilkenny and Cork, with Kilkenny taking the title by 3-10 to 1-12. The prize for the winning team was the Liam McCarthy Cup. The All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was run on a provincial basis as usual. All games were played on a knockout basis whereby once a team lost they were eliminated from the championship. The format for the All-Ireland series of games ran as follows: Sunday was the date of the 1992 All-Ireland senior hurling final between Kilkenny and Cork. It was the eighteenth championship meeting between these two great hurling rivals. Both sides last met in the 1983 championship decider when Kilkenny were the winners. Cork last defeated the Cats in the championship in the 1978 final when they captured a third title in-a-row. Kilkenny were appearing in the second consecutive All-Ireland final, having lost to Tipperary in 1991. At 3:30 pm match referee Dickie Murphy of Wexford threw in the sliothar and the game was on. Kilkenny played against a strong wind in the first-half as Cork settled quickly and were the better side. Cork went five points up without reply and were really motoring. Kilkenny fought back and were awarded a penalty in the 32nd minute. Up stepped D.J. Carey to take it and he made no mistake in crashing the sliothar into the net. The rest of the half was a tit-for-tat struggle and Cork led by two points at the interval. Soon after the restart Corks f...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=18984959 ... Read more

Excerpt: Shinty (Scottish Gaelic: ) is a team sport played with sticks and a ball. Shinty is now played mainly in the Highlands of Scotland, and amongst Highland migrants to the big cities of Scotland, but it was formerly more widespread, being once competitively played on a widespread basis in England and other areas in the world where Scottish Highlanders migrated. Whilst comparisons are often made with field hockey, the two sports have several important differences. In shinty, a player is allowed to play the ball in the air and is allowed to use both sides of the stick. The stick may also be used to block and to tackle, although a player may not come down on an opponent's stick, a practice called hacking. A player may tackle using the body as long as this is shoulder-to-shoulder as in football. The sport was derived from the same root as the Irish game of hurling but has developed different rules and features. These rules are governed by the Camanachd Association. Shinty is also one of the forebears o...http://booksllc.net/?id=73107 ... Read more

He played Gaelic football with his local club Waterville and was a member of the Kerry senior team from 1956 until 1974. O'Dwyer later served as manager of Kildare, Laois and Wicklow, however, it was as manager of the Kerry senior football team from 1974 until 1989 that allowed him to gain iconic status as the most successful manager of all-time. Mick O'Dwyer was born in Waterville, County Kerry in 1936. He was educated locally at St. Finian's national school before later attending Waterville Technical School. O'Dwyer later worked as a hotelier and as well as running an undertaker service. ODwyer first came to prominence on the inter-county scene as a member of the Kerry minor football team in the early 1950s. After two years without an appearance in the provincial minor decider Kerry reached the Munster final in 1954 with ODwyer lining out at midfield. Cork provided the opposition on that occasion, however, the Kingdom were far too strong for the young Rebels. A 4-10 to 1-3 trouncing gave ODwyer a Munster medal in the minor grade. Kerry subsequently qualified for the All-Ireland final against Dublin, however, ODwyer was not included in the starting fifteen on that occasion. Kerry lost the game by a point. ODwyers move onto the Kerry senior football team was a natural progression. Excerpt: The Munster GAA Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association since 1888 for the top hurling teams in the province of Munster in Ireland. The series of games are played during the summer months with the Munster final currently being played on the second Sunday in July. The prize for the winning team is a cup that resembles the Liam McCarthy Cup. The championship has always been played on a straight knockout basis whereby once a team loses they are eliminated from the series. The Munster Championship is an integral part of the wider GAA Hurling All-Ireland Senior Championship. The winners of the Munster final, like their counterparts in Leinster Championship, are rewarded by advancing directly to the semi-final stage of the All-Ireland series of games. The losers of the Munster final enter the All-Ireland series at the quarter-final stage. Five teams currently participate in the Munster Championship. Two of the most successful teams in hurling, namely Cork and Tipperary, play their provincial hurling in the Munster Championship. Between them, these teams have won the provincial title on 88 occasions during its history while they have also claimed 55 All-Ireland titles. The title has been won at least once by all six of the Munster counties, five of which have won the title more than once. The all-time record-holders are Cork, who have won the competition 50 times. Tipperary are the current champions. Hurling is the most prominent of the two...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3524830 ... Read more

Chapters: Joe Deane, Donal Óg Cusack, Brian Corcoran. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 35. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Joe Deane (born 15 November 1977 in Killeagh, County Cork, Ireland) is an Irish sportsperson. He plays hurling with his local club Killeagh and was a member of the Cork senior inter-county team from 1996 until 2009. Deane is one of the top ten championship scorers of all-time and is regarded as one of Cork's all-time greatest-ever players. Joe Deane was born in Killeagh, County Cork in 1977. He was born into a family that had a strong link to Cork's hurling glories of the past. His great-grandfather, Tom Mahony, won an All-Ireland title with Cork in 1902. Through Mahony's lineage, Deane is also related to former Cork stars of the 1970s and 1980s Seánie O'Leary and John Fitzgibbon. Deane was educated at the local national school in Killeagh village and later attended nearby Midleton CBS. It was here that his hurling talents first came to the fore. Deane quickly became a key fixture in the forward line of the school's senior hurling team and, in 1995, he landed a Dr. Harty Cup title - the Munster senior colleges' hurling title. In the game itself Deane scored an impressive 2-2 from play. Midleton CBS later qualified for the All-Ireland colleges' final with St. Raphael's of Loughrea providing the opposition. An exciting game developed, however, at the full-time whistle St. Raphael's were the champions by 3-10 to 3-5. Deane had another day of sharp shooting and contributed 3-1 of his team's tally. Deane subsequently studied at University College Cork between 1995 and 1998. It was during his tenure here that his hurling skills were further developed. He was a member of the UCC panel who won three Fitzgibbon Cup titles in-a-row in 1996, 1997 and 1998. Deane is one ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=5435210 ... Read more
