This is the best info available for anyone that goes after mule deer.I was able to use the knowledge I gained from this book and apply it this last season and it works. This book is worth every penny if you are serious about mulies.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Mess
Ordered this book, it got sent to someone else, then when they recieved it back they couldn't find it. It took 2 months to get my refund. Not a happy experience. To many problems. Still want the book though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best in Class
I have read hundreds of hunting books, and rate this the most useful mule deer hunting book available. This book cotains more practical information that you can (and will) actually use than most hunting books on any species. Many of the techniques described in this book will work on any western or mountain game. The book is written in a very easy to read style and is entertaining as well as informative.

I also particularly enjoyed the photo section in which readers are given an opportunity to practice the "spotting" skills covered in an earlier chapter.I would like to see an entire book devoted to these kinds of "puzzles," as I believe this is a useful way to practice your spotting skill if you don't live where the game lives.

Congratulations to these authors.I hope to see more from them in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow, I have my deer hunting bible now
I bought this book after reading the other positive reviews.
Now, I am happy to add my compliments to the authors for writing an excellent book.
I am going hunting for the second time this season.
Last season I was completely unsuccessful in locating any deer.
After reading this book now I have a couple of reasons why.
And I am now armed with some great tactics to use while in the field.
Great book, the authors earn every last cent paid for it.
Thanks guys.

Deer hunting is as complicated and beautiful a sport as has ever been invented, and all that is reflected in the classic essays collected in THE DEER HUNTER'S BOOK. The writers here know deer and deer hunting, but they also have the knack of sharing what they have seen and learned. From Jack O'Connor's famous "portraits" of deer, to Ted Trueblood's oft-quoted articles for Field & Stream, these are some of the greatest writings ever on deer hunting, stories like: .

"The World of the Whitetail" by Angus Cameron .
"Portrait of the Mule Deer" by Jack O'Connor .
"The Old and the New" by Ted Trueblood .
"Hunting the Mule Deer" by Theodore Roosevelt .
"The Secret Life of the Cottontail Deer" by John Madson .
"The Right Deer Rifle East and West" by John Jobson .
"Woodcraft and Whitetails" by Larry Koller .
"Making the Drive" by Francis Sell .
"Finding Wounded Deer" by Ray Beck .
"Sign the Trophy Buck Leaves" by Larry Benoit with Peter Miller .
"The Whitetail Challenge" by Lew Dietz .
and dozens more

So sidle up to the fire, crack open THE DEER HUNTER'S BOOK, and while away the hours until the next opening day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great! My copy is well-worn!
I highly recommend this collection of classic deer hunting stories for hunters of all ages and experience. The writing found in this book, from Faulkner's "Race at Morning," to William Miles' "Three Men and a Buck," Underwood has put together a reading list of ageless stories that will get the excitement building for October or late November.

Product Description
It helps the healthiness both of body and soul to live among beautiful things. --designer William Morris, 1882

Shabby Chic -- the rich, inviting, practical, time-worn style created by one of America's top designers, Rachel Ashwell, is a style of living that reflects the grace and simplicity of another time.

Now you can do more than just dream of living in a Shabby Chic home. You can create one yourself. With invaluable treasure-hunting advice and tips for essential materials, furniture, objects and decorations, you can live a life of simple, but rich, beauty.

With her practiced eye Rachel takes you on a tour of flea markets, antique malls, and a variety of secondhand sales -- estate, tag, yard, church, garage -- to demonstrate how, with a little taste, imagination, work and ingenuity, you can turn trinkets from the past into treasures for today.

As Rachel sifts through the discarded, the crumbling, the shabby, she takes you step by step through her personal process, sharing how you, too, can spot a fabulous buy, repair and alter it, and by following her guideline words -- comfort, function, and beauty -- develop your own distinctive, original look that is down-to-earth yet truly exquisite.

Following her sensible advice you can exchange the anonymity of mass-produced furniture and home accessories for unique, inviting surroundings for a fraction of the cost and decorate comfortable, livable rooms in which family heirlooms blend with flea-market finds and the new combines gracefully with the well worn. Lavishly illustrated with lovely and informative photographs and drawings, Rachel Ashwell's Shabby Chic Treasure Hunting & Decorating Guide shows you how to have the home you've always dreamed of, a place where children's dinners are served on mix-and-match antique plates at a table covered with lace from a renovated curtain set with unironed linen napkins. A space where fresh flowers stand in antique jugs, complementing comfortable furniture covered in crisp white denim that is enhanced with each laundering.

For Rachel, Shabby Chic is not just style. It is a way of living. With her trademark warmth and charm she reveals how she sleeps on embroidered antique linen and dresses in cashmeres and bias-cut silk dresses discovered in vintage clothing shops and flea markets. Throughout, she teaches you how to recognize and appreciate beauty in unlikely and often overlooked places, as well as how to define and refine your individual taste.

Worn damask, relaxed velvets, tea-stained florals, washed-out cotton prints, tattered lace, monogrammed linen....

Comforting colors: celadon, mint and seafoam greens; dusty rose; ivories, creams and faded grays; a touch of pale sky-blue; crisp, clean white....

Faded grandeur: the incomplete, the neglected, the crumbling, the cracked, the mismatched, the wrinkled....

Ruffles, gathers, tucks; scuffs, chips, imperfections; worn moldings, tired elegance, peeling paint....

An appreciation of vintage and history....

This is Shabby ChicAmazon.com Review
By now most readers even marginally interested in homedecorating are familiar with the democratic principles of decoratingelaborated in Rachel Ashwell's first book, Shabby Chic: namely, that well-made vintage furniture and home accessories can add a cozygrandeur to your home, even if the paint's a little thin or the fabrica bit faded. In her second book, Rachel Ashwell's Shabby ChicTreasure Hunting & Decorating Guide, Ashwell shares her processes, from a stall-by-stall description of a flea market trip to pictures ofher design boards scattered with photos, fabric swatches, and paintchips. Ashwell doesn't skimp on details: she tells how to decide on afair bargaining price at flea markets, how to clean old items withoutharming them, and (step by step) how one ugly glass-fronted cabinettopped with old linoleum and mismatched shelf paper became anattractive, roomy storage piece that houses her daughter's books, dolls, and bedding. This is a friendly, intimate book in which Ashwellshares pictures of her own home and those of her friends--some of whomlive in roomy beach houses and some of whom live in 450-square-footcottages, and all of whom use the main Shabby Chic concepts ofcomfort, function, and beauty in deciding which objects to share theirspace with. Fans of the original Shabby Chic will find thisfollow-up every bit as useful, attractive, and accessible. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MY MANTRA
As a foreigner in the United States (I'm French) and a big fan of Treasure Hunting, this book taught me everything I had to know to go to the Californian flea markets. I learned a lot, this book is beautiful, practical, interesting, charming, I love everything in it.
I read it several years ago, several times and I still consult it when necessary.
If you like buying in the flea markets, if you like antiques and if you need a few very useful advices, this book is an absolute must, even now in 2009.
I know I will keep this book forever and I want my children to have it as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Condition! Like new!
This book doesn't look as though it has even been used @ all. It's in perfect condtion. I would buy from this seller many times over. Great product & service! Arrived ASAP. Great!

5-0 out of 5 stars There is a thin line between shabby and trashy.
I personally do not like anything called shabby or chic. I had to read this book in self-defense. My wife is always trying to sneak this stuff in the house. Just today, I spotted a white lace ceramic plate protruding from the plant ledge.

I suggest that if you must do this to do it correctly. This book is very helpful in not only what to combine, but also to where to find it. Pay close attention to the resources in chapter 8. Rachel does not skimp on the color pictures and several views of the same thing.

If you attempt this with out a guide, you will end up with shabby trash. Imagine a leopard sofa next to a red wall.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shabby Chic Decorating Guide
It is a lovely book, full of ideas and the photos are the best. I loved it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not too shabby
Rachel Ashwell has grown 'Shabby Chic' from a decorating style to a big brand name. The ideas in the book are testimony to the fact that you do not need a lot of money to create a beautiful interior in your home. It is filled with gorgeous photographs to inspire the tentative home decorator into action. A lovely coffee table book that is beautiful to look at and filled with practical ideas that can help you create the look of luxury (minus the price tag that usually accompanies it). Full of terrific ideas for decorators with a limited budget who love comfort and style. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book for library and reference
I found this book to be a comprehensive guide to ghost hunting, has advice/information/tips for the rank beginner to someone who has been investigating for a while. If I could only buy one book for ghost hunting, this would be it. It really covers just about everything you can think of for ghost hunting. I did feel the coverage on infrared photography and video taping was lacking and this is an important tool for many these days. Or the fact that infrared supposedly does not pick up dust nor dirt so if you get an orb with IR, there may be a good chance you have a real orb.

The stock photos were frustrating; there was never a description of what it was you were looking at, where it came from. And they often had nothing to do with whatever text it was inserted near. I would expect to see this ghost hunter's own photographs, rather than stock photos.

Where there are some ghost hunting or paranormal investigators who dribble out their knowledge and expertise over several to many books, this author has put everything into one book. I like that about this book.

The CD was informative, a little slow at times but definitely worth watching.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to the field
I very much enjoyed Chris's "Picture Yourself Ghost Hunting" book.I loved the format, the packaging, AND the content. It has broad and reasonably unbiased coverage of many relevant topics, and lots of good reference info. The DVD is entertaining and insightful, without all the artificial drama of the ghost hunting reality shows. This book targets novice/beginner paranormal investigators and others interested in the subject. It does not pretend to be a Master Guide to All Things Ghost Hunting Related. What it aims to do, which is to provide a good introduction to the subject, it does very well indeed.Nice job, Chris (and friends).

5-0 out of 5 stars The best ghost hunting book for the novice
When I first saw the title, honestly, I didn't expect much. It's not the most promising title, honestly. However, don't be misled: this is one of the best books on ghost hunting I have read.
Being that I first spotted it in a brick'n'mortar book store, I had the opportunity to flip through the pages.Quickly, I started to realize there were some gems of info here, and so despite my initial misgivings,I bought it, and I'm glad I did.I have roughly a dozen books on ghost hunting and ghost tech, so I'm familiar with what is out in the field.
At this stage, I am only halfway through the book, and already I can say, for a novice ghost hunter seeking guidance and practical, as well as historical and theoretical information, this book would be my topmost recommendation.
Unlike most books of it's genre, this one is teeming with truly practical information you can really use -common sense tips that obviously are the result of experience in the field. There are things here that most beginners would not think of until too late, or even many months into investigating. This book will save you a lot of headache in that regard. One example of this is the suggestion to always first enter a haunted building with a camera (and/or audio recorder) already rolling, as, in the author's experience, very often the first several minutes are the ones that see activity;the hypothesis being that the resident spirits are typically curious about newcomers, and will come out of hiding to see who's arrived. They say a lot of good evidence has been collected (and might have been lost!) by doing this. It also provides several sample forms for investigators to use as a template, to help give them a feel for the procedure.Last but not least, the included DVD was a pleasure to watch and very informative; though I questioned 1 or 2notions put forth by the author's friend, Matt.

The other virtue of this book is it's objective honesty:when it comes to ghost theory, Chris never, ever comes across as an arrogant, matter-of fact, self-congratulatory expert:he never presents hypotheses as facts, but rather, as the hypotheses they really are.I can't overstate how much I appreciated this honest approach.Too many other authors state their favorite notions on ghosts as if their ideas were obvious and validated "fact", when the truth is, no one really *knows* anything about ghosts, at this point.

The author is also very good about discussing ghost technology from a beginner's point of view:while the book does not get very technical, (it's not a book on ghost tech, after all) it is also free from the common misconceptions that plague most other ghost texts, such as notions that IR therms "detect cold spots of air" (they can't) or that IR therms "send out a beam of infrared energy" (again, they don't, they're strictly passive devices). He also teaches the reader the true cause of 99% of "orbs" and "vortexes", again, educating his reader to the benefit of everyone in the field.
Chris has really done his homework, and is careful not to mislead the reader into making the mistakes that currently plague the field.

The overwhelming honesty, straightforwardness, and common sense usefulness of this book ranks it as #1 for the novice ghost hunter, barre none, IMO.
Great job Chris, we need more people like you in this field!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Understandable 'How-To' for the Beginner
The author provides a thorough, in-depth look at the photography side of paranormal investigation. He provides credible photographic evidence, combined with examples of non-paranormal photographs that are easily mistaken as being ghostly. He provides first-hand accounts from professional ghost hunters and explains the pros and cons that everyone faces. The best part is you don't need a PhD, dictionary, or genius IQ to read this book - as is the case with other materials related to this subject.

Excellent job Mr. Balzano!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Must Have for Any New Group
This book was a great resource for our new paranormal group. It gave us guidelines, sample forms, questionnaires, legal guides etc.
It also suggested how to prepare for, as well as how to conduct a professional investigation.
It prepared you for what obstacles you may run into, how to debunk and how to verify evidence.
A must have for any new group. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good info even if you think you know about job hunting.
I ended up getting a job before reading much of it.A local unemployment office displays posters by this publisher/author that have career & job hunting tips with the thinking behind the tips included. It was real smart stuff that I hadn't thought about or applied to my own efforts.Seeing those posters was enough to make me want to have the book.

After about 10 years as an officer in the military and being told where my next job will be, I'm back in the civilian job market again. This book has been a great guide to the civilian job market.I highly recommend this book for 2 types of people...those who are just finishing school and looking for their first job, and those who are not particularly happy with their current career and want a change.

This book gives step-by-step advice for the entire process, from figuring out what you might like to do for a job to what to do after the interview is over. The detailed advice on finding jobs to apply for, writing a cover letter, calling a prospective employer, and preparing for the interview is fabulous. It has a lot of great advice along with several exercises to get you going on each step of your job search.

Do you have a hard time knowing what to say in difficult situations?Do you have a hard time figuring out how to sell your strengths to a future employer?Do you have a hard time figuring out how to reply to those difficult interview questions? This book covers all of these areas...it tells you exactly what you need to include in a cover letter, what sort of answers you need to be prepared for when you call a future employer, and how to safely answer those painful interview questions. This book includes a page of the 50 most common interview questions and suggestions for safe answers...by itself, these 2 pages are worth the price of the book.

If you are in the job market, the advice in this book is worth far more than they were asking. If you know a young person who is just entering the job market, this would be a perfect gift for him or her.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book for every new paranormal researcher
GHOST HUNTING IN HAUNTED CEMETERIES A HOW-TO GUIDE By FIONA BROOME is full of useful information and interesting facts. She goes in to detail about the different types of cemeteries, what to look for to get the best results, how to run a successful investigation, how to begin your research, and so much more. If you are looking to learn how to be a great paranormal investigator or just interested in cemeteries, this book has something for you. It is well worth the $12.95 and I recommend this book to everyone starting off in paranormal research.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent "how to" on cemetery investigations
I enjoyed reading this book, and found this book to be a good book for the beginner in ghost investigations as well as experienced ghost hunters. She covers the entire scope of cemetery investigation from beginning to end, explains a lot of the design elements (finger pointed up, finger pointed down, the sun, angels, etc.) found on gravestones and which type of gravestone might be haunted.

This book is a rather short read but full of information. An excellent reference book.

This book would also be helpful to the genealogist, who is going through cemeteries trying to find ancestors and decipher the meanings of some no longer used text, abbreviations, and symbols on the gravestones.

I was disappointed that the author, as she says in her book, of the "oldest, most respected" paranormal web site didn't have any other photos besides orbs included in her book. I would think a group that has been around for a long time and continues to do active investigations would have more to show for it with photos than this book did. It would have been nice to see examples of the types of manifestations that can be found at some cemeteries (orbs, mists, lights, apparitions, etc.).

All in all, however, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in investigating the paranormal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for a beginner!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Fiona Broome's book.

Being a curious beginner, I didn't really know what to expect, but the information was presented clearly and easy to understand.I also appreciate the encouragement as well as the cautions given.

This book is filled with great information that helps me, as a beginner, take that first step...

5-0 out of 5 stars Ghost hunting for the serious enthusiast, placing the spirits in their time.
I really enjoyed Fiona Broome's newest book
'Ghost Hunting in Haunted Cemeteries'.

I think this a book good for ghost hunter orhistorian.
It gives great guidelines on what type of cemetery
would be a good source of interesting paranormal activity.
Once you are there she aides you in what sort of things to look for
and the clues that may indicate a spirit may have a history
that would indicate an active after life.

Fiona details where to find the resources to help
in the detective work of rediscovering history
once thought buried, is invaluable. It hi-lights
how the study of the local graveyardscan teach one
about the community and its social dynamics.

I'm pleased to know this book documents the things
no longer taught to the current caretakers of death.
Their teachings are limited to only the care of the body
ignoring the rich wealth once known about the cemetery
and the interrelationship of the living and the dead.

What I like most is this book gives me the practical clues
to research the folks who lived in my home
which dates from 1860. Most folks that knew them
over time, will have left clues in the graveyards.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic primer of cemetery-based ghost hunts
There are plenty of ghost-hunting guides out there, but this one fills a nice gap by focusing specifically on what you need to know to successfully find and investigate haunted cemeteries. The straight-forward and easily readable text delivers all of the basic knowledge one could need to get started and yield solid results, and wonderful photos abound to illustrate the discussed points.
If you are very experienced with cemetery ghost hunts, this book might be somewhat too basic for you, but it is loaded with useful information that could come in handy to all ghost hunters. And the section on gravestone art would make an excellent quick reference during field investigations.
I never realized how many types of cemeteries there are, and this kind of information will prove useful to approaching each type.A great gift idea. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Soulful
This a short but important work by Roger Scuton. Its importance consists in witnessing how an active and insightful mind, such as his, can see nature and beauty in the world around him. His concise and wonderful prose is a lesson to those who wish to learn what makes life worth living. In a way, it is journal of how Scruton came to self-knowledge, not through abstractions and academic jargon, but through sensitivity to what life offers. He begins with hunting but he ends with a moving romance with nature itself. In this regard, hunting is but a window into his soul and the limits of human nature. I have read all of his books and this one ranks among the best. A must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful mind
This is a very quick and enjoyable read ... a weekend delight about weekend delights gone by.
I both hunt and read philosophy, so I'm biased to like this book on two counts.
Nonetheless, I'd highly recommend this work to anyone with an interest in philosophy who is curious about hunting, or to a hunter who likes to think.I guess one third character need apply:the post-modern untermensch with an aching sense that something is wrong with his heart and his world, and a desire to learn what that might be.Some insightful hints are found between these covers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very funny, very well written, very good philosophy too
This is Scruton at his best in non academic writing. If you ever wondered what fox hunting had to do with Aristotle, Plato, Kant (and possibly even Heiddiger, the man not the tunelling boring machine) this is the place tolook. It is also a good present for parents of philosophy students whowonder if their offspring are doing a safe or sensible subject. They'llhave no worries after reading this. I recommend it very highly, except forsad socialists. ... Read more

This book was all together disappointing. It was very repeative and offered very little useful information. It had one or two good points, but repeated them over and over.If you want to hunt elk in Montana, this book goes over every possible place an elk could be, whick is a lot of places.Parts of the book were controdictory to other parts. No mention of field judging antlers, and very little mention of useful equipment. If you are looking for a good elk hunting book check out elk hunting by mike eastman.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Pictures Are worth the Cost
It's hard to believe that deer of this size exist and it's harder to believe that they are consistently taken by this family. The photo's in the book alone, are worth the cost. Even if you never get to hunt in the New England area the Benoit's do, you can pick up info that will help you in your own hunting.

I really enjoyed the story as it deals with the Benoit family and how this has been something that's been handed down from one generation to the next. It's nice to know that tradition's still exist in this ever changing world, and that those tradition's have meaning and relevance in a world that no longer put's any importance into such thing's. It's a great book and comes highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book worth adding to a collection
This book seemed to fill in some missing gaps on how to get started when looking for big bucks, in the big woods, I thought there would be more detail on specifics, I felt that the book repeated itself alot, all in all a good book with some new valuable insights on tracking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Something for our way of hunting!!!
They say in Wisconsin that the average hunter travels no farther into the woods than about 75 yards from their parked truck.

From the still hunting I've done in much of northern Wisconsin, I'd certainly say that seems to be the case.

My son told me about this book and he also has the Benoit video which we watched. What a delight to see some hunters hunting, tracking...every sense alive, not afraid to venture into the wilds in pursuit. These aren't just any hunters however, they know their stuff...they have the nice bucks too to validate their knowledge and experiences.

I thought I was pretty good at tracking, stalking, willing to work extra hard, but was excited to learn there is so much more to know looking at a deer track.Practically advice...when to pick up pace and not waste time, and when to pay attention with every step.A good read...a fun read, and a lot of good information.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Hunter's Dream Book!
My husband cannot get enough of this beautifully illustrated, greatly understandable instructions on how to 'get the big ones.' He is proud to have this book on our shelves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sternberg is Always Great
Perfect for your hunting library.Sternberg is a master at making the complex much simpler so that even the novice hunter will find his material educational and enjoyable. The photography is amazing at times.

4-0 out of 5 stars Short and sweet
This is a very nice little book. It gives beautiful color photos of the game. There is a nice section on some beautiful dogs and a practical guide on guns and equipment.

The Western USA style of hunting is a little different than the classical British and European style that I favor, but we can certainly all get along here.

This book was clearly done by someone who loves the birds, the dogs and a day in field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to the World of Upland Game Bird Hunting
This book reads like an introductory encyclopedia for upland game bird hunting. It gives you a very good overall view of most aspects of this type of hunt. For the novice it is perfect in that it goes through all what it entails to go upland game bird hunting, as well as covers practically all species you could hunt for. The strength is that it covers most everything - what it lacks in depth does not quite matter as other litterature is available for the one that seeks to "dig in" further.I clearly recommend this book both for the novice as well as the expert that would need a reference guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best and brings back memories
Upland Game Birds (The Hunting & Fishing Library) by Dick Sternberg issuch a wonderful book. Re-reading it I was reminded of when I was a kid andmy Dad who was also my hero, would come home from hunting and head for thecooling room in the garage and hang the pheasants and ducks he had gottenup to age.

We would have great conversations and start talking aboutwildrice and mushroom stuffing and all the great dinners we would enjoy inthe winter months from the game he brought home.

Dick Sternberg issuch a gifted writer and reading his books you find yourself awed by thephotos and graphics and like the best classes you remember from school yourealize that learning can be fun as well as worthwhile.

With pheasantseason just weeks away I am looking forward to trying some of the recipesin the book that I have not tried yet. And the recipes are easy to followand do not require you to travel 50 miles to some quaint overpriced shop tobuy some spice listed since everything he uses can be found at your localgrocer. Unless you live in the Alaska wilderness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect beginners book

4-0 out of 5 stars I enjoy this author
I enjoyed the 2 books of this little series. I wish there was another book to tie it up, though.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hunting Memories
Elisha Clevon never asked to be a vampire. Forced into servitude by a cruel and distant master, Elisha had spent centuries caring for an elderly vampire locked in an eternal state of dementia. The suicide of another vampire unleashes a storm of events leading to the death of Elisha's charge and some stunning discoveries that change her preconceived notions about what it means to be a vampire. Now, for the first time in her ageless existence, Elisha is trying to find other vampires who may have survived the killing rampage of her master, and tries to create a sanctuary for all the lost vampires who have been terrorized into hiding. //Hunting Memories// is the second book in Barb Hendee's Vampire Memories series and it's more introspective than action oriented. Hendee seems to be trying to bring the vampire myth back to more traditional roots, yet the story stumbles as the characters are drawn into fairly typical good vs. evil stereotypes. The series has potential but the personalities of the main characters seem strangely blunted as more time is spent on their memories than their current predicament. A good book that would be better if it had a stronger feeling of momentum.

3-0 out of 5 stars Vamp Champ, Chick Lit
Hunting Memories closely follows the events of Blood Memories, but if you can follow an out of sequence episode of your favorite TV show, you should be fine if you pick up this one first. And if you are a fan of The Noble Dead Saga, you will probably want to - follow the author!
Julian Ashton is a vampire who lacks the telepath abilities that let vampires adjust the short term memories of their food supply. Resenting this, he resolved to kill off all telepathic vamps so that he could be the master, instead of a freak. It was Julian who issued in the era of killing humans while feeding, and all the vampires he makes think this is the norm - the law. One human he turned, Eliesha, was given a unique assignment: to be caretaker for his immortal but helpless father, a once proud Lord of an estate in Wales condemned to endless senility.
But, far away from the watchful eye of Julian, Eliesha's latent telepathy emerges, and she rediscovers the possibility of feeding without murdering.
Now Eliesha becomes the leader of a small but growing number of vampires and their friends who want to come out of hiding but fear discovery by Julian.
One vampire, Philip, is tormented by bloodlust which jeopardizes the fragile new order. Perfect love casteth out fear, but in Philip's case, this is reversed. Fear of losing Eliesha has to overturn his love of killing.
I have one major objection to this book, so if you are a Hendee fan please skip the rest of this paragraph. This is chick fic. The estrogen is so thick that virtually all the xy chromosome characters are unmanned and demasculated. They're what some females think men ought to be: domesticated; and the ones that don't play well with others must be either tormented or psychotic. Fair enough; something has to balance out all the publicized male wish-fulfillment fantasies that abound. But here's a secondary problem I had with the storyline: personally, if I were a vampire with a conscience, I seriously doubt that would stop me from going vigilante. It seems to me these characters do more harm not killing their socialized victims than they ever did when they were reducing the ranks of recidivists. Hey, if I were a vampire, I'd be the next Lone Ranger, taking a serious bite out of crime.

5-0 out of 5 stars Didn't Let Me Down!
This was a great follow up to the 1st book and I'm thoroughly pleased. The characters in this book jump right off the page; you can't put the book down once you start.

The story picks up where the last one left off. Elisha is looking for other Vampires like herself and living in Seattle with Phillip and Wade when she gets a letter from a Vamp in San Francisco named Rose who says she needs help.

She talks Phillip and Wade into taking a trip to San Fran to bring Rose back to Portland and start a sort of safe haven for lost Vampires.

Meanwhile Wade is struggling with his jealousy over Phillip and Elisha's relationship as well as his own purpose in this scheme. Where as Phillip is trying his best to console Elisha by feeding off of mortals with out killing them, but finding it extremely difficult. The author eludes to an attraction between Phillip and Elisha in this installment as well, and their relationship grows considerably.

When the 3 of them get to San Fran and find Rose she is not alone, but living with a Ghost (her dead nephew). Things are brought to light when they all share memories like they did in the 1st book by telepathy.

When Rose introduces Elisha to a elder Vampire named Robert it rocks the boat. One Phillip is threatened, two Robert is used to being in charge, and 3 Robert has a whole mess of rules that he believes all Vampires should live by. Roberts character is a great addition to the story, but Robert brings us back to Julian (the bad Vampire from the first book) who has banished himself to his old manor in Wales.

Julian lives in fear that the old rules will be reestablished and therefore he would be killed. In return he has taken it upon himself to behead every elder Vampire in existence, when he discovers that Elisha has brought one out of hiding he gives chase.

There is so much more to the story which I don't want to give away, but there are plenty of surprises and if you liked the first book this one will not let you down. Each character is highly developed . When the author goes into flashbacks I don't even mind, this usually drives me crazy in other books, but you become so attached to her characters that you love it. I really enjoyed the dynamic between Elisha and Phillip this time around. You can't help but find yourself extremely attracted to Phillip's character which is odd considering he's a cold blooded killer. Yet, the author is that good!

I will say though that these books are not like most paranormal romances in this genre, if you are looking for any erotica which you find in most Vamp books you won't find it here. I'd compare it to Patricia Briggs (Mercy series)or Some Girls Bite. Its more about charater development and story line. Its not like Kresley Cole, JR Ward, Laura Adrian, or Christine Feehan --- just a warning to anyone looking for something like that. I love those other authors and this book isn't the same animal.

1-0 out of 5 stars Silly and Forgettable Boring Book. A Pass! (C- Grade)
Things couldn't be better for the immortal vampire Eleisha, who finally defeated her maker Julian. After hundreds of years of living in hiding and killing innocent humans for their blood, she has found a way to feed without killing. Eleisha couldn't be happier with her new found family. She now has Philip, a Frenchman, who uses his gift of sexual attraction to lure his victims, and Wade, a human telepath who left his life behind in Portland, Oregon to join Eleisha and Philip. Even though Eleisha scared Julian to the point where he ran away back to Europe with his tail stuck between his legs, he is still planning his revenge.

Both Wade and Philip are worried when Eleisha tells them about a letter she's received from another vampire who wants to meet them. Philip thinks it's a trick from Julian, but Eleisha doesn't believe that. She's been writing letters back and forth with Rose de Spender in San Francisco, California. Eleisha wants to invite Rose to come live with them in an old church she has purchased. Because Philip is afraid Eleisha will leave him, he does what she wants and soon he and Wade travel with her to meet this Rose.

Julian Ashton wants payback and raises the ghost of a recently deceased sixteen-year-old who overdosed on pills to help him. Mary Jordane will be in his control and now as a ghost she can follow Eleisha and report back to him. Mary tells Julian how Eleisha has met a new vampire, Rose and Seamus, a ghost who has been her only companion since the 18th century, and of Robert, a vampire from the past who Julian knows longs to destroy him.

Eleisha can tap into Rose and Robert's memories so she can build a bond with them. Philip doesn't like any of this and wants to go back to the way things were before these new faces entered into their lives. Eleisha refuses to listen to him and as they travel back home to Portland, Julian has come out of hiding and has a few new tricks up his sleeve that will ruin Eleisha's plans.

Barb Hendee has written an interesting take on the vampire myth with vampires who are living on the edges of society and must do whatever they can to survive. Hunting Memories is gritty and dark and for those who enjoy a thing with vampire characters.

I found myself very bored with Hunting Memories. I couldn't find a connection with any of these characters and there was simply no excitement, thrilling suspense or action I can recommend within these pages. Eleisha has her moments where she shines but her interactions with Rose and the two very important men in her life failed to bring anything worth while to the story in general. Julian comes across as a pathetic creature who doesn't scare in any way and the actions he takes to build a new army of sorts to defeat Eleisha and her crew was ridiculous.

Hunting Memories is a very forgettable book and the writing very disappointing, which is surprising because Barb Hendee is part of a well known writing duo with her husband. The only reason I think this was published is because of Hendee's writing with her husband. I was expecting Hunting Memories to have a nice atmospheric near gothic feel to it. Instead I felt like I was reading a failed attempt to catch those readers who are looking for another type of series with vampires, but ones who are weak and sad.

Hunting Memories is a pass.

5-0 out of 5 stars My brother, from Michigan, is in this book.
I was looking up my brother and bear hunting when this book showed up in my search. On pages 226 and 227 it tells how my brother, a bear hunting guide, was badly injured by a black bear. The book was delivered to the wrong address so I ordered another one. The second one came and it had been autographed by the author.About 5 days later the first one showed up so I purchased that one too and sent it to my brother.

Thanks for everything.

4-0 out of 5 stars Uncovering the elusive bear
I bought this book for tips on black bear hunting for the Northeast U.S. region. The book is well-made as others have stated, the paper is heavy and the photos are vivid color, which is nice to see in this day and age.
The book goes into a good deal of detail in explaining the habits and mindset of black bears. There were parts of the book that I did not find too useful such as the large sections on hunting over bait and with hounds, these practices are illegal in my state. I personally would have preferred to see more on spot & stalk, and hunting from a ground blind. The book also does not discuss preferred bullet construction for this potentially dangerous game species. Outside of these shortcomings it is an informative and helpful hunting book.

3-0 out of 5 stars A book worth having
I have had my copy of this book for a while and I always take pleasure in picking it up. It is visually lovely, and gives a nice ready account of ducks and duck hunting equipment and technique.

I would only like to see improvements in two areas. First, I think it would be worthwhile to include a section on dogs and another on the international variation of duck hunting techniques and lore.Second, a simple cooking guide under the same cover would also be a welcome addition to a well rounded presentation.

Good book with a lot of pictures that cover most of your unanswered questions about duck hunting. This is an introduction that helps you start, but not a bible. Well worth the money

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Introduction or Reference
I suppose that if you're buying a book to learn "how" to hunt ducks, then you are (like me) already at a disadvantage. So much in waterfowling is dependent on tradition, community, and access, so there are natural barriers to entry for the novice.

This book does an excellent job providing basic coverage of key duck hunting issues, but it is (of course) not a substitute for a good mentor or listening to some old timers yack about their previous seasons.

Of particular worth are the decoy spreads and the overview of different hunting venues. But perhaps the greatest contribution is the insight on duck-hunting lingo.I was unaware that I was a puddle jumper without a milk run, who had dabbled at pass shooting, but now I know.

Seriously, for those of us stuck in a rut hunting farm ponds, the introductions to river, lake, and flooded timber are intriguing and motivating. The basic waterfowl information is useful, and the various tips, tricks & techniques are all serviceable. This is a very nice introduction for the new hunter, and should serve nicely as a reference volume for those with more experience.

In this new edition of his landmark 1986 study, pioneering anthropologist Elliott Leyton examines the psyche and motivations of his six original multiple-murderer subjects and now takes stock of how far we’ve come since then in our understanding of why people commit gruesome assaults on innocent strangers. This case-study approach—based on years of immersion in the killers’ diaries, confessions, psychiatric interviews, statements to the press, videotapes, and photographs— led the way in defining serial and mass murders not as the acts of alien creatures with deranged minds but rather as personalized protests by alienated men against the society that they believe has excluded them. Leyton also provides an analysis of the Washington, D.C. sniper case. While uncovering the central themes of modern culture that motivated their deeds, Leyton provides vivid and chilling portraits of Edmund Kemper, Ted Bundy, Albert DeSalvo, and David Berkowitz, serial murderers whose prolonged killing campaigns provided them revenge against the world and celebrity careers; and other mass murderers whose brief but horrific murder sprees constituted their own enigmatic suicide notes. The author shows that the motives of multiple murderers are not simply sexual or psychotic; but rise from the very core of American mass culture. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Real Insight
Gives you a look to the inside of the killers mind. It's like watch criminal minds from the killers side!

1-0 out of 5 stars Too much bias by the author
I could barely get through the first two chapters of this book as I found theauthor's views intruding too much.As to what to do about such humans I am never a supporter of the death penalty as it is uncivilized so life without parole is just fine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Unusual angle on serial killers
Leyton is an anthropologist, and this study of serial killers focuses on sociocultural factors rather than individual pathology as a cause of multiple murder. Specifically, Leyton examines how class conflict has contributed to serial killings in different epochs. In the Middle Ages, royalty killed serfs; in the Industrial Age of the 19th century, the nouveau middle class killed prostitutes and other individuals from the lower rungs, and in the modern era serial killers target those who are just one rung up from them in the social ladder.

Leyton argues that modern multiple murderers are class-conscious and socially conservative men who are obsessed with status, class, and power. Emboldened by our cultural glorification of violence and serial killers, and trapped in alienating lives that do not match their class strivings, they kill the objects of their desire. And they keep killing until they feel that they have accomplished the mission that they set out on. It's a very interesting analysis, although I think Leyton selected case studies that fit his thesis and ignored others that did not. (He profiles Ted Bundy, Edmund Kemper, David Berkowitz, and four other cases, including the D.C. snipers in his new edition, but he ignores - for example - Jeffrey Dahmer, whose predilection for young Cambodian boys goes against his thesis.) Also, the fact that documented serial killers in the Middle Ages were royalty may be due to documentation issues; maybe serfs who killed serfs never made the history books (a possibility Leyton doesn't mention).

But these are minor limitations. The book is well researched and well written, and it is certainly refreshing to see a treatment of this topic that does not ignore the macro perspective of class, race, and culture. In my own forensic psychology practice, I have found it helpful to keep Leyton's perspective in mind, while still not ignoring the developmental wrong-turns and individual pathologies that also contribute to multiple murder. Overall, this book is well worth reading for anyone interested in the etiology of serial murder.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still the classic work
I first read Hunting Humans 15 or so years ago and I have recently bought the new edition. It is a fascinating insight into the minds and motivations of serial killers, although I think Leyton struggles somewhat to fit them all into his particular thesis. Ted Bundy was extremely bright and personable and started his killing spree after his girlfriend had accepted an offer of marriage which he promptly withdrew two days later. Almost without exception, his victims all resembled this woman. He was also a necrophiliac, returning to have sex with his victims even when they were in an advanced state of decomposition. Perhaps my favourite part of the book, and one I often quote when faced with 'expert opinion' , regards the 'gentle giant' Edmund Kemper. He had spent several years incarcerated as a teenager for brutally murdering his grandparents (yes, they let him out!), and he was in the psychiatrist's office getting his release papers. The good doctor wished him well and felt certain that the young Kemper would go on to have a productive and useful life. At that very moment Kemper's car was parked outside. In the boot were the two severed heads of his latest victims. Chilling, but absolutely gripping reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inside the minds of serial killers
Elliott Leyton (author) has written a superb detailed book focusing on 6 modern serial killers/modern mass murderers. Edmund Kemper, Ted Bundy (the charming young Republican), Albert Desalvo (the social climber known as The Boston Strangler), David Berkowitz (Son of Sam), Mark Essex (the racist) & Charles Starkweather. Leyton also touches upon other 'famous' killers to try and argue his case that all these killers are not alien people with deranged minds, but *'alienated men with a disinterest in continuing the dull lives in which they feel trapped.'(*author's quote). The book tries to go inside these killers minds (and backgrounds) to try and understand why they, as individuals, committed these crimes. Were all their childhood backgrounds so tragic as to contribute towards their eventual decline? If so, why do individuals with equally tragic (or more so) backgrounds choose not to kill? The book also seperates truth from fantasy. What we see in films such as The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal etc may all be very compelling action and drama, and highly enjoyable to watch, but we must not make the mistake of believing that these films are based on reality. Leyton has done a thorough job of disecting these cases one by one, and the painstaking research that he has conducted is evident on every page. Buying this book will be well worth your time and money, for it may just be the one book that may well stimulate your thoughts enough to question everything you thought you knew about serial killers. ... Product Description
Peter Hathaway Capstick first earned a name as an outdoor writer in the pages of such magazines as Guns & Ammo, Petersen's Hunting, The American Hunter, and Outdoor Life. In this, the first of a two-volume collection of his hunting, fishing, and shooting tales, you'll find twenty-four examples of his keen eye and steady hand with rifle, shotgun, bow, and typewriter.

The critically acclaimed successor to Hemingway and Robert Ruark repeatedly put himself in harm's way and writes about close scrapes with his trademark wit and dash. He tells what it's like to be in the path of an express train with Horns--the Cape buffalo; describes the heart-stopping sensation of sharing the immediate bush with several sickle-clawed lions that most certainly were prone to argue; and recounts his adventures bow-fishing for exotic species in the piranha-filled rivers of Brazil. Capstick's experiences, painfully gained (and almost lost) with the most dangerous of game, are the yardsticks against which most modern exotic and hunting adventures are gauged. The finely rendered drawings by Dino Paravano do justice to the text.

4-0 out of 5 stars Africa hunting
A "manly" book of hunting in Africa.Very entertaining like all of Capstick's books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Capstick
Another outstanding Capstick book.Capstick is my favorite african writer and I have read many.I highly recommend it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Typical Capstick
I've enjoyed all fo his books, some are better than others. This one is full of good info and is reasonably entertaining. It's even better if your like me and say to blazes with "political correctness", whatever it's supposed to mean.

4-0 out of 5 stars Careful, you might learn something!
Last Horizons is a departure from Capstick's usual storytelling of high danger hunting in Africa. This book consists of an archive of his articles and short stories written for Peterson's Hunting and other outdoor magazines.Though the stories are short, they are still written in Capstick's classic form and provide for excellent entertainment.

These articles not only provide a good read but are informative as well. Many people criticize Capstick for his tendency to exaggerate (I can buy into that line of thinking as well) but you cant deny his thorough researching.I found several of the articles(ex. effectiveness of shot size) to be extremely insightful and educational. The articles on air rifles and rat hunting were entertaining and excellent lessons in ballistics and the importance of practice.

This book is not typical Capstick and probably not for everyone.True, some of the information is outdated but if you are an avid hunter you will find this collection both informative and valuable. It reminded me of sitting there listening to an old man telling stories learned by years of experience and trial mixed in with several well spun yarns. The pig sticking story had to have been written sitting around a campfire.Good stuff!

4-0 out of 5 stars GOOD COLLECTION OF CAPSTICK STORIES
This is an anthology (collection) of old Capstick magazine articles spanning a couple of decades, mostly hunting stories but some fishing stories and a few adventure stories thrown in. My favorites were the stories of the kali elephant herd, shooting down dragon flies with a BBmachine gun and the backyard safari.Classic Capstick and well worth theread. Many of the stories I have read over and over again. ...
