4-0 out of 5 stars great reader for looking to getting into turkey hunting
I gained an interest in turkey hunting after seeing wild turkeys in N. California and wanting to learn more about them, how to hunt them and prepare them. . I think this book covers the first two aspects very well and with good detail.. Preparing the turkeys in my opinion fell short when it came to dressing (plucking , chopping, cutting, scooping, slicing) part. i know the book isn't a cookbook and is geared towards hunting. we've all see turkeys before, but being inexperienced, I wasn't able to vision it all in my head and pictures or at least line drawings of the dressing process would have made this book more clear/precise and a perfect 10 for me.Throw in a color photo of the Grandslam and its an 11...

Product Description

Booger Bottom, in rural Georgia, has no road signs, no stoplights, no stores. Nobody knows how it got its name, whether from the mythical booger—part panther, part wild dog—that is rumored to have roamed there, or from the Feds ("boogers") who raided local moonshine stills during Prohibition. Today Booger Bottom's most famous product is Michael Waddell, one of the world's most accomplished hunters.

Growing up in this wild land near the Chattahoochee River, Waddell was blessed with two great gifts: a wonderful father who stoked his passion for hunting, and endless time in which to pursue it. He eventually left the backwoods of Georgia to stalk elk, moose, caribou, wildebeest, eland, and everything in between, from Alaska to Africa.

Mixing Waddell's best hunting stories with hilarious anecdotes about the people he's met along the way, Hunting Booger Bottom is a must-read for anyone who has ever wandered into the woods with "a stick and a string."

5-0 out of 5 stars excellant read
whether you're a m. waddell fan or not, if you're a hunter you'll love this book. It has a little of everthing. I need a book to get my attention right at the first paragraph for me to be interested in it and this book does

5-0 out of 5 stars A great read.
If your a Michael Waddell fan, this book is a must read.It gives you a rare insite into his life, loves, and how he got started in the industry.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some problems
I found the book to be a pretty good read with interesting and sometimes humorous stories of hunting and the hunting industry. But I found it disappointing in a couple of ways.

One was that Waddell didn't really express much interest in the animals other than the excitement of the hunt and the trophy quality of the kills. In the forward, Ted Nugent uses the word "naturalist" in his praise of Waddell, so I was hoping for something in the tradition of Teddy Roosevelt's hunting stories with keen observations of animal behavior and deep concern for their environment. Very little of that kind of stuff is present in this book.

Another disappointment stems from an episode where Waddell describes being sent to a video editing class in a northeastern city (can't remember where). While there he encounters hostility toward the footage he brought with him to edit because it shows animals getting killed. Naturally and understandably, he's put off by that and uses it to fuel his determination to promote his culture and the way of life he grew up with. The problem is he sort of plants his flag and digs a trench, viewing the liberal city students more or less as enemies. While reading the book, I found myself hoping that he might reflect on the hostility a little bit. For one thing, if you've grown up in an urban or suburban environment and have no experience with killing animals and meat is just something you buy at the grocery store, then hunting is most likely going to come across as pretty ugly and barbaric. I wished Waddell -- who otherwise is such an engaging, likeable character -- would have given some thought to how hunters might begin to erode that negative attitude non-hunters often have. Instead, he ends up mainly just preaching to the choir.

5-0 out of 5 stars Booger Bottom
Just what a hunter from South Georgia want to read!!! Its nice to know that we've got some good ole boys representing us on TV.

Product Description
In an unprecedented literary feat, Steve Hamilton's debut novel, A Cold Day in Paradise, captured both the prestigious Edgar and Shamus awards. Now the best-selling author presents the third installment in his critically acclaimed mystery series: a complex, atmospheric tale that will plunge readers back into icy, unpredictable Alex McKnight territory, where the private investigator finds himself doing a favor for an old friend-but this favor could cost him his life...In the remote, wintry reaches of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, it's hard for a man to remember what springtime is like, let alone Spring Training. But when a former teammate tracks him down, erstwhile minor league player Alex McKnight is instantly transported back to the good old Toledo dugout, circa 1971. Unfortunately, Randy Wilkins didn't trek 3,000 miles to the bleak shores of Lake Superior to sit by the fire with a couple of imported beers, dissecting the past, inning by glorious inning. He's here to pitch a proposal: that Alex help him find the woman with whom he had a brief, passionate affair three decades ago. Who is Alex to deny a fellow the chance to ward off classic midlife chill by rekindling an old flame? What he doesn't consider is that there might be a good reason the mysterious, missing Maria is more elusive than a starting position in the majors-and that his trusted old pal might not have told him the whole score...AUTHORBIO: STEVE HAMILTON, born and raised in Michigan, works for IBM in upstate New York, where he lives with his wife and children.Amazon.com Review
Alex McKnight, the burned-out former cop turned PI of Steve Hamilton's Edgar Award-winning first novel, ACold Day in Paradise, was a promising catcher who never quite made it to the majors. But his old teammate Randy Wilkins did, for one game with the Detroit Tigers that effectively ended the pitcher's career. What Randy can't forget about that game was the beautiful young woman he met the night before he blew his future in professional sports. Over two decades later, he'scome to McKnight to track down the mysterious Maria, whose memory stillhaunts him. The trail is pretty cold after all these years, but Alexmanages to get a line on Maria's relatives, who aren't exactly thrilledto make his acquaintance. In fact, they're downright hostile when Alexfinds them in a small Michigan town, and he just barely escapes with his life. But he perseveres, and ultimately makes his way to aneven smaller resort town, where the natives are almost as unfriendly. Thepolice chief is so hostile to Alex's efforts that he quickly realizes someone else is on her tail, and that there's a good reason she's been hiding out for so long. Not only that, when someone shoots Randy and almost kills him, Alex is in for another nasty surprise. His old friend isn't who he seems to be, and Alex himself may be the victim of exactly the kind of scam Randy's been running since he left the majors.

Hamilton has a well-developed sense of place, and he's good at exploringthe complexities of his protagonist. But it's Randy the reader wantsmore fully realized, even after the mystery is solved and Alex makes abeeline back to Paradise. This is a taut, well-written thriller thatfulfills Hamilton's promise as a writer to watch. --Jane Adams ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars another cold day...
Why is it that even when it's NOT winter/blizzard/ice-storm season, Steve Hamilton still manages to make Alex and his environs absolutely frigid? Alex is a reluctant private investigator who basically wants to be left alone in upper Michigan (with a cold bottle of Canadian beer). Unfortunately, someone finds Alex. His old team mate re-connects and brings Alex with him on a trip down memory lane. Some memories should be left alone. The story zig-zags back and forth (in a good way) leading us and Alex all over Michigan for answers. If you enjoy hard-boiled, tough guy tales pick up this, or any other Alex McNnight book, and enjoy. And don't forget the bottle of beer!

4-0 out of 5 stars Third time's a charm . . . sort of
The third installment of Steve Hamilton's Alex McKnight series isn't really as great as the first two, but it still manages to keep us hanging. Our protagonist, McKnight, spends his time living in a cabin in Paradise, Michigan, and drinking Canadian beer with only a few (seemingly awkward) friends. When a man from the past, Randy Wilkins, comes by for a surprise visit, Alex begins to realize that Randy is actually here for a request. And that is to find a woman that he has left behind exactly thirty years ago. It becomes clear that this isn't a simple proposal, as we get to see that no one isn't as they seem.

This is a clear, straightforward read: nothing is overly complex but at the same time nothing is too simplified. There's lots of humor in the beginning, so it looks like a comedic story at first, but if you've read "A Cold Day in Paradise" and "Winter of the Wolf Moon," you'll know that once we're done with the beginning, the rest is all drama and suspense. I have to admit, though, that the middle section does tend to drag, with lots of interviews and phone calls that occur throughout. And the sexual content that's found in "The Hunting Wind" looks very unnecessary. I'm sure it adds into the story, but it felt inappropriate from where it is placed. But in the end, as everything is pieced together, we're left with complete and utter shock.

"The Hunting Wind" is a quick enjoyable read, but it isn't as incredibly intriguing as the first two in the series. It would seem like the weakest in the series, but I won't ever be sure since I still have yet the read the rest of the Alex McKnight series.

Grade: B+

3-0 out of 5 stars Plenty of twists to hold your interest
Steve Hamilton writes books that read like Harlan Coben's Myron Bolitar series crossed with Lee Child. His hero, Alex McKnight, is a former police officer and one time baseball pitcher living the quiet life in northern Michigan.Out of the blue, Randy Wilkins - a former baseball teammate - turns up and asks Alex to help him track down an old flame who he hasn't seen in 30 years. The story starts slowly with what seems to be a simple "cherchez la femme" mission, but it quickly emerges that virtually no one and nothing is what it initially seems.

Steve Hamilton has created a likable protagonist (imagine a less violent, more human Jack Reacher), but his real gift is keeping the story twisting so that the reader's interest is sustained throughout.Everytime I thought I had a handle on how things would play out, it would surprise me.A nicely crafted thriller.

5-0 out of 5 stars Make this your first
What's so compelling about this one is that it "shows" rather than tells.
The other books in the series seemed to go deeper into Alex---why he is who he is (and yes, after reading these books, Alex---just like Robert Parker's "Spencer" becomes a very real person) But this book---my favorite so far, just took me off on a wild ride; SHOWING why Alex does what he does---for friends, for the world, for principle----whatever.

The mastery of Hamilton's writing just grabs you and doesn't let go.

Start with this one would be my thought---but a mor important thought would be to just enjoy them ALL!

4-0 out of 5 stars A great read
Hamilton does a fairly good representation of Upper Michigan and the twin cities of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan/Ontario and area. Clearly he has spent enough time there to cite specific locations and directions, and he captures the atmosphere pretty good, if somewhat cliche. The location lends a different backdrop to basic plotlines, and he works that backdrop into the stories in this series. A refreshing approach to a well used genre.

This is a good weekend read and very enjoyable -perfect for an afternoon by the pool or a rainy weekend at the cottage. It is a little on the 'easy reading' side of things, and not as involved plotwise as something by Ludlum or Clancy, but it is very easy to fall into the story very quickly, or pick it up again after a break. A good style for a tired mind after a busy week. I have recommended this series to others and will continue to do so as I look forward to the next book.
-Start at the beginning, as parts of the stories build on each other.

5-0 out of 5 stars Whitetail Book
This is a great book to help prepare yourself with understanding deer behavior before, during, and after the hunting season.Well written and easy to understand.Gave good tips that enhanced what I knew and was already doing but now will go about a few things a bit differently.

5-0 out of 5 stars Whitetail Advantage
It's a good read with many observations about the whitetail that I have found to be interesting.Well worth the purchase and will remain in my collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Dave Delivers
I've been reading "Dr. Dave" Samuel's work for years. As a wildlife biologist and avid bowhunter, he is well-suited to translate research results into field applications for the hunter. In Whitetail Advantage, Dave and his co-author Bob Zaiglin address common myths (the oldest bucks do most of the breeding) and provide new revelations (scrapes with either doe and human urine were visited equally) that give the hunter insight into deer behavior. For those of us who place value on knowing the whitetail's "life" as part of the hunting experience, this book is a great addition to our library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Whitetail Advantage
My opinion of the book is that it would take a very large stack of Magazines and Scientific Studies to present what's offered in this book.
Many times I have sat in my treestand and tried to relate what I observed to what I have read in various magazines. Seldome was I able to connect the dots. Here one can connect the dots and more.
So far I havent read anything that compares to the knowledge offered here.
A great book

5-0 out of 5 stars Whitetail Advantage
I recently purchased Whitetail Advantage and was I ever pleased. I have been bowhunting whitetails for 30 years now and was looking for an "extra" advantage. I have been fairly successful bowhunting and have been strictly trophy hunting for several years now. I was looking for someone with scientific information as well as someone that had actual field experience as well and this book delivered. The in depth coverage of literally dozens of field studies was very enlightening. I have read many deer books and while some were extremely interesting as well as helpful I had never read a book with so much actual scientific field data. I would recommend this book for anyone that has an interest either in simply learning more about whitetail or for the "addicted hunter" that is interested in learning how to better prepare himself for hunting.

I bought this book online because it is the only place that I could find it.I read it in two days and loved every second to it.The short storys in this book for the most part entwine into one another. The storys focus on two weeks of the year spent in the Big Woods hunting bear and deer. The shorts in this are very good. Hope this helps you.

3-0 out of 5 stars big woods
This is a good book for hunters or adventures people. This book by William Faulkner Big Woods hunting stories is an interesting book.
This fiction book is about a bunch of people who go out in a big river bottom and there is a big bear that they call old Ben and they can't ever kill him but this time when they go out they have a special feeling that they might get the old two toed bear. Do they get the bear? You will have to read this book to figure it out. Then there best hound lion who was the only hound good enough to come close to Old Bendies after a chase. Then the next time they go out they find a big buck that looks like there is a wooden rocking chair on his head. You probably wonder if they get it but you are going to have to read it yourself to find out.
I would give this book three stars because it jumped around a lot and was hard to make sense for me. I would recommend this book to people who like to read adventure books because it is adventures. This book also had parts in between that could of been left out and the book would have been just as good.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bear Complete
I've occasionally used this collection as required reading for troubled and directionless young adult males."The Race at Dawn" provides an excellent starting place for a discussion for the need to complete their education. The review from 1999 by "A READER" comments about "The Bear" being incomplete; all five sections are printed in the version collected in "Go Down Moses."

4-0 out of 5 stars his most accessible
The essence of political conservatism is the yearning for the best of the culture and moral clime of thepast--the sense that something of value to our souls has been lost in the headlong rush of human socialprogress.Political liberalism, on the other hand, assumes that bureaucrats and technocrats can improveupon centuries old social structures, cultural inheritances and moral codes. But there is one area wherethe roles of the two are reversed and that is when it comes to the environment. The American Left hasa long standing love affair with nature; from Jefferson to Thoureau, Teddy Roosevelt to Al Gore, there is a pastoral strain to liberal politics, a kind of religious belief in an Edenic past and a nearlyBiblical sense that man's attempts to control nature have a corrupting influence.

This sentiment has perhaps never been treated more beautifully in our Literature than in Faulkner'sgreat short novel, The Bear. The story of a succession of hunting seasons is basically a warning fromFaulkner that as we destroy the wilderness we threaten the traditions and values of our society.Natureis symbolized by the cagey ancient ursine, Old Ben.Most of the tale is told by Ike McCaslin, who is10 years old as it begins.Initially he flounders through the woods, but as he surrenders himself to theprimordial forces of Nature, he is able to sense the bear's presence.Another year, when he sets asidehis gun and compass and other accouterments of civilization, he is finally able to see the bear. Gradually he earns his way into the aristocracy of the wild, until, together with Sam Fathers (partblack, part Indian, he represents a kind of noble savage) and Boon Hogganbeck (a sort of elementalforce of nature) and a suicidally fearless dog named Lion, he hunts down Old Ben after the bearviolates the unwritten code of the woods by attacking a horse. But even as Old Ben succumbs, he willtake some of them with him and his parting signals the end of a way of life.

Despite some too obscure interior monologue passages, this is Faulkner's most accessible work.It isthe only Faulkner I've ever actually reread and it is so rife with symbolism and ulterior meanings, thatyou can always find something new in it.And, for whatever reason, it is further evidence that sportswriting brings out the best in almost every author (see also "Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu" by JohnUpdike), in fact, it is often anthologized in Greatest Sports Story collections. Regardless of where youfind it, or which version you read, it is well worth a shot.

4-0 out of 5 stars very interesting
I've learned a whole lot about this author's method for open country game.It was easy to understand and now we'll see how well I can apply it in practice. the book is well worth the money for the read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for me.
I bowhunt mule deer in the desert west, and this book is perfect for me. But, that is it's sole focus. It's main goal is to teach you how to get within a couple of dozen yards of a deer without being detected. I don't hunt with a rifle, but I doubt too many gun hunters need to get that close. The section on spotting might be of use to rifle hunters, but since bow and rifle seasons don't overlap I'm not sure how applicable it would really be. In general, I'd skip the section on tackle as bows and equipment have changed a bit in the last 25 years. But, otherwise, the advice is great. If you want to get started bowhunting in the desert west, this is probably one of the best resources out there.

So if you want something to fill in 30 mins or so (it's also very short),you can grab this, but it is by no means memorable (then again,it's not at all bad, like some of these down loads are,so you will read it from start to finish, but I wouldn't pay for it)

YMMV.I love when characters talk during sex, and I thought the reveal of the nature of their relationship worked very well where it was placed in the story. If you enjoy mildly combative, teeth-bared, drawn-to-you-against-both-our-wills-oh-but-take-me sex, you'll probably like this as much as I did.

One star off for the concept of a "compulsory sex festival," because, um.

Product Description

Hunting the American West is a thoroughly illustrated, narrative history of big-game hunting in the nineteenth-century American West. The engaging narrative draws extensively on the writings of original participants and observers of the subject and — along with an abundance of pictorial material — affords unusual insight into the diverse methods and motives for hunting big game in the Old West. No other work on the subject conveys the feeling and character of the hunt in its various eras and styles, or its profound consequences, as convincingly.

This book covers the principal big-game species; subsistence, commerce, and sport hunting; the variety of methods used over time and among different peoples in the harvest; the evolving weaponry involved; the artistic expression engendered by the western chase; and the rise of the hunter-conservation movement, which led to the founding of the Boone and Crockett Club.

While it presumes solid scholarship, Hunting the American West is intended for a broad popular audience, including those interested in hunting, western history, firearms, sporting art, and conservation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hunting The American West -- The Pursuit Of Big Game For Life, Profit, And Sport, 1800-1900
Hunting The American West -- The Pursuit Of Big Game For Life, Profit, And Sport, 1800-1900 is an impressive hunting history book filled with many art images and photographs of wild animals, western big-game hunters, and the many various weapons used.Richard C. Rattenbury is an elegant and fluid writer who meaningfully conveys the changing western landscape throughout the 19th century and describes the different types of hunters as well as numerous people who were actively involved in the hunting experience; quotes from the hunters themselves dramatically recreate the vigorous experiences they lived through.

On pages 26-27, Captain Randolph B. Marcy, hunting on the Great Plains in 1849, found that in making a fawn call for an antelope that a mountain lion was bounding at full speed towards him; Marcy then shifted his rifle focus to the fast-approaching big cat, which was shot dead ten yards from him.I believe the wolf and the jaguar should have been included in the highlighted animals, because they were also hunted for various reasons at that time in history. On page 45, George Drouillard is described as the leading hunter of the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery, combining with other hunters in supplying 131 elk and 20 deer to Fort Clatsop on the Pacific Coast from December 1, 1805 to March 20, 1806.On page 87, young British soldier-adventurer George Frederick Ruxton awoke on a snowy night in Colorado in 1846-1847 to see a wolf in a sleeping state near his large fire, and realizing the animal only wanted warmth, Ruxton went back to sleep. On page 133, the full-page color photograph shows two Kentucky-pattern pistols with half-octagon barrels and well-lined handles, and at about .50 caliber, they appear more powerful than all the handguns of modern history.Pages 241 and 245 describe experienced hunter Frederick Courteney Selous' difficulty in finding animals in Wyoming in the fall of 1897 because of the hunting of the past decades.I liked Charles M. Russell's "predicament" painting showing a rifle-holding hunter standing on a rocky mountainside near his fallen bighorn ram when surprised by a standing grizzly bear on the slope on page 266 and Frank Jay Haynes' photograph of two bull elk sitting in the snow in Hayden Valley in Yellowstone National Park in 1894 on page 279.The last chapter highlights the thinking of George Bird Grinnell (1849-1938) and the political actions of Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) and John F. Lacey in successfully protecting wild animals and the lands on which they lived.

Great historical account of the title subject. The pictures are worth the cost even if you don't read the narrative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Provides a comprehensive historical overview drawn from the personal accounts and journal entries
During the 1800s, the American West was a magnet for men who hunted for survival, pleasure, and profit. Beautifully illustrated with period black-and-white images and full color artwork and photography, "Hunting The American West" by Richard C. Rattenbury (Curator of History, National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum) is an impressive work of meticulous scholarship that provides a comprehensive historical overview drawn from the personal accounts and journal entries of participants and observers ranging from aboriginal hunters and 'Mountain Men', to European adventurers and big game market hunters. "Hunting The American West" addresses such issues as big-game species, subsistence hunting, commercial hunting, and sport hunting; the variety of methods used from 1800 to 1900; the evolution of weaponry used in hunting; language associated with hunting in the American West; and the rise of the hunter-conservation movement -- which lead directly to the founding of the Boone and Crockett Club. Informed and informative, "Hunting The American West" is a unique and valued contribution to the growing library of historical literature with respect to frontier experiences of the west and a core addition to personal, academic, and community library collections.

MEDITATIONS ON HUNTING is a broad examination of the condition of life. "The life that we are given has its minutes numbered, and in addition it is given to us empty...we have to fill it on our own, that is we have to occupy it one way or another...." Ortega y Gasset also discusses the evolution of hunting and carefully examines its implications to the hunter--its total absorption of mind and body, its atavistic reverberations, its animalistic fulfillments and its tonic immersion in nature. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Meditations on Hunting
Thought-provoking and well written. But be warned, O&G has an odd way of dealing with his subject matter.Sometimes he seems to skirt the title of a chapter altogether. For example, one of the early chapters simply expounds at length upon the "credentials" of two early hunters (a Greek and a Roman). To what end?The gist of the chapter seems to be that if two very solid historical figures both liked hunting, that ought to be good enough for us.Hm.The chapter titled The Ethics of Hunting seems to say - as best as I could decipher it - that the ethical questions that underlie the matter are way too deep, tangled and just plain incomprehensible to even talk about.Philosophically, this can be a frustrating read sometimes.Still, what isn't?Like I said, the book does not fail to be well written and thought-provoking even though it asks more questions than it answers. If you are comfortable reading philosophy and you are interested in hunting, don't pass it up.

3-0 out of 5 stars philosophy and the hunt
A worthwhile read, but a little heavy and stilted. It was a stuggle at times. But, I'm glad I took the time to finish it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Philosophy of the Hunt
This is an excellent book which details the Ortega y. Gasset philosophy of hunting. It is surprising how little reader interest there is in the book. I would consider it a must read for those who still hunt.

Ortega y. Gasset bases his thinking on a combination of anthropology, history and natural sciences. The basic idea is that hunting is an ancient occupation of man, it is part of the definition of man's place in nature and it is ingrained into the genetic code of all of us.

In this way, Ortega y. Gasset reveals that by hunting, people fulfill their biological imperatives, realize their ability to transcend time and find their primitive being which predates recorded history.

The work is primarily a philosophical justification of hunting. I believe Ortega y. Gasset proves his point convincingly. However, that hardly matters because his analysis certainly evokes the right question which is, "Why do we hunt?"

5-0 out of 5 stars Even non-hunters should own this
This little book goes to the heart of why we do what we do.I have always known that hunting does not make sense money-wise.Here is an in-depth explanation as to the reasons behind it. If people as a whole could understand that you are only doing things are right and natural,I feel like that would go a long way to getting the Bambiest off our backs.I have seen in other places that this book is a good one to re-read and I could not agree more.No hunters library should be without this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Meditations on Ortega y Gasset
Puts the history of hunting in perspective for everyone. When you're done reading it, you understand why people hunt. You also understand why people are just as interested in hunting today as they have been throughout time. I would encourage hunters and non-hunters to read the book, as there is much to be appreciated by both groups. In fact, I would encourage re-reading it from time to time. It has that quality of good literature in that it reveals something new and interesting each time it is read. ... Read more

Excellect book.

Explains very well the moon phases as it pertains to hunting.

The book also talks about hunting food sources, thermals, bedding area's, rub lines and travel routes.Good all around hunting book.Would recommend, very similar to Bowhunter soft cover books that come out every year.

Product Description
Basic training to help you turn your young retriever into an efficient and enthusiastic worker.

This book is directed to owners of retriever puppies in their first year, but the program is equally effective with young retrievers starting beyond that age. It gives your retriever the necessary disciplines and skills he will need to become a reliable hunting companion. The authors assume that most puppies grow up as house pets, and so throughout the program lessons that every companion dog needs to learn are also stressed. Puppies learn best with step-by-step progression, so using this program as a guide, you will have a retriever that can go on to be successful in whatever field you choose competitive or non-competitive.

The authors cover how to work with your puppy's unique personality, correlate lessons to the pup's mental and physical development, train with lessons that are progressive, thorough, and uncomplicated, and most of all, effective!

Retriever Puppy Training, The Right Start to Hunting has been a favorite with people starting out with their first retriever puppy or those who want to raise a hunting companion from puppyhood. However, experienced retriever handlers and those planning to trial or hunt test with their dogs will also find it very helpful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful tool in the modern job-hunter's toolbox
Fearless Job Hunting: Powerful Psychological Strategies for Getting the Job You Want tells how to overcome self-doubt and worry and how to use psychology to understand real job requirements, interviewer intentions, and how to land the job. From staying positive during the process to using cognitive behavioral therapies to understand strategies decision processes in organizations, this is yet another powerful tool in the modern job-hunter's toolbox - and a pick for any career-oriented collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Job Hunting and Practically Applied Psychology
As the backgrounds of the authors suggest, this book purports to offer "powerful psychological strategies for getting the job you want." Topics covered in the book are quite comprehensive, from preparation and targeting through job search, resumes (probably the weakest part of the book), networking, job search, interviewing and salary negotiation.

Based on the the Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy of Albert Ellis, the authors provide some excellent constructs to work through the decison-making process in a manner to reduce procrastination and enhance progression towards meaningful work. Using the ABCDE approach (Adverse situation, Belief about it, emotional and behavioral Consequences of these beliefs, Disputing this belief and identifying the Effects of the new perspective) to evaluate perspectives, situations, decisions and action, they provide multiple real life examples of job hunters and career explorers working through this process. Chapters end withhints, short worksheets and questions to apply the key topics to the reader's specific situation.

I found the first section titled "Gear Up to ManageYour Job-Loss and Job-Search Challenges" to be particularly useful, providing excellent guidance on reprogramming personal perspectives, managing the inevitable stress of the process and creating a positive, results-oriented job search environment. ... From the USA Today bestselling author of Deja Demon--slaying demons is nothing compared to the terrible twos.

Demon Hunter Kate Connor is having one hell of a month...

In between demon patrols and teaching self-defense classes to the local moms, Kate has to deal with a teenage daughter who's gung-ho on being a demon slayer in training and a toddler son entering a tantrum phase that rivals anything from the pits of Hell.

That's a lot for one woman to juggle, but on top of it all, Kate has to find a way to release the demon possessing her first husband, Eric, without destroying the man inside. Because if the demon within Eric gets free, it just might be more than one seriously stressed suburban mom can handle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book
The fourth and final book of the Demon Hunting Soccer Mom exceeded my expectations.I don't know why the name of the series seems to change slightly book to book, but it is all part of the same series.Kate Conner is very real and is easy to identify with. The book jacket to an earlier book suggests Kate Conner is like Buffy becoming a soccer mom if she kept her past a secret.I think Julie Kenner's series is better.I loved this series, it is one of the best I've ever read.

4-0 out of 5 stars More Demons!
Kate our demon-hunting mom is back in action. This book picks up right where the last one left off.Her dead husband is back in the body of a chemistry teacher, her daughter is training to be a hunter and her new husband now knows about demons and wants to help. Her daughter is about to celebrate her 15 birthday when all hell breaks loose on the demon front. The biggest and badest of demons is trying to get out of her husbands body and our favorite bad-ass chick is back and allowing the first of all female demons to have her body. What does this mean?Fighting the demons has gotten harder and more of Kate's non-standard life becomes less organized and more painful.I'm not sure how much further this story line can go ... but I sure am enjoying it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Julie is a great writer...
I have to say that Julie Kenner is a great writer. Her book is tight, well paced and it keeps you on pins and needs the entire time.

Spoilers:

On that note, I have to say that I was disappointed with the ending and that characters. If I was a mother, with a toddler, I would not allow my husband who has already walked out of the family once due to that monsters are real, walk out again and take my toddler with him. For a Demon slayer, Kate a wuss when it comes to her man.
While I can see her husband running out once out of panic, twice is not acceptable. Time to bust out the divorce papers.
While there was the "happy ending" how happy is it?
My feelings on this series are up in the air. I will read the next in the series but if Kate's husband doesn't grow a pair, I wont be buying the rest of the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kate Kicks A$$ again!
I just love the Kate Connors series by Julie Kenner. The books keep getting better and better an dthe most recent addition, Demon Ex-Machina, was no exception. Once again Demon-hunter, Kate Connors finds herself battling more demons. I don't want to give away any of the plot, but secrets are unveiled and Kate faces lots of challenges. I can't wait for the next book in this series!

5-0 out of 5 stars Demon Hunting Soccer Mom book review
This series of books, by Julie Kenner, are undoubtedly aimed at young teen females, but I am a male in my 60s and have enjoyed each of the so-far 5 novels in the series and am looking forward to future books. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I really enjoyed this book. I have a new pointer puppy and have read the puppy part several times. I really like the way it is organized by dog age for things to teach the dog. I have over half a dozen books on dog training (I want to do it right) and this one is a keeper.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good but basic overview
This is a good book that gives a solid, but very basic overview of what the author wants from his bird dogs. If you already have some experience training animals, but have never trained a bird dog, which describes me, I think this book may be useful to you. If you are looking for an in depth how-to book on training a bird dog for the absolute novice, this book isn't going to fulfill your expectations. He has taken a 2 year process and condensed it into 100 pages of the high points. Also, the author is very much oriented toward the companion/home dog. He suggests breaking a lot of rules that field trial people would consider blasphemy, in order to better fulfill the companion role. I happen to agree with just about everything he says. It is well written and easy to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I purchased this book in preperation for my new bird dog.I have had a bird dog in the past that I trained without any help, and he definately had some flaws. This book hit the spots that I missed with my last dog and gave me some good advice about working with quartering. (something that my late dog struggled with.)

I look forward to trying out a few of the authors methods.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Politically incorrect guide to hunting.
The book was presented to a person who has hunted around the world. What can you give a person such as that. He loves this book. D.D.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disturbing
As an outdoorsman, I find it disturbing that the author attempts to justify the "rush" that most hunters feel when killing an animal by writing a book like this.Just watch some of the hunting shows on TV that show hunters shaking with adrenalin before and after their kill is made. While hunters may very well contribute to wildlife funds, the bulk of the hunters are in it for the kill. I doubt that they would be contributing their hard earned money if the payment of license fees became voluntary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, educational & enlightening book
This is a book everyone needs to read if you want to make an educated decision about the right and the need for hunting, and for anyone concerned about animals and wildlife.I myself am not a hunter.I just was not raised that way.My Dad never hunted and so my siblings and I never went hunting and I never got into it.I have many friends who hunt and some who don't.I constantly hear in the news and in political deabtes the argument for and against hunting and have always wondered why anti-huntign advocates seem to be so extreme in their views.Frank Miniter uses entertaining and personal stories to present the facts about this on-going debate and his prose is wonderful. He uses humorous and serious stories to keep the reader interested and the research he did is incredible. He presents the facts that most media will not enlighten the public with because it is just that-politically incorrect. But that does not change the fact that what he writes is true.Do yourself a favor, get this book and educate yourself about what real hunting is.You may not have the urge to hunt yourself, but you will get a better appreciation of what hunters do for the environment, the wildlife population, and for society in general and then have an educated opinion the next time this hot topic comes up in conversation or in a political discussion.Fantastic!

2-0 out of 5 stars Form an actual argument, instead of calling yourself politically incorrect.
Calling yourself politically incorrect is not an argument. If those of a more conservative bent want to argue an issue, be it on anything, then argue it. But please, refrain from calling yourself politically incorrect. It doesn't mean anything if there is no logical foundation behind it. There are people who are pro-hunting and there are people who are anti-hunting and both sides have various arguments either way. Debate the merits of the arguments. The fact is, hunting is necessary when a species becomes too populated in a region that lacks enough food for them. Such as deer but there are actual arguments against hunting if people are open to hear that side.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent...the most awesome book I have ever read to explain to the world why hunting is needed & noble!
So simple, so easy to follow, so full of powerful & irrefutable arguments that any antis who try to continue with their agenda (and they will) will be exposed for the nut jobs that they are, period. ... Read more

Excellent book for increasing your probability of taking that trophy that's just out of reach. Great foul weather tips, calling and rattling tips were very helpful and the rut timings and scent applications were made very clear. There is plenty of useful knowledge in this book. Can't wait to apply some of these tactics next season, though there weren't a lot of bow hunting tips most of the info can be applied for gun and bow hunting. I'd recommend this book to anyone that feels the need to improve on their hunting skills or just wants a trophy buck on their mantle for bragging rights!!!

In the anthology Hunting: In Search of the Wild Life, editor Nathan Kowalsky brings together an impressive list of both heavyweights and lightweights from philosophical academia, as well as writers from other fields, many (okay, most) of them being active hunters. The goal: to present to general readers a philosophical examination of hunting from many angles without the jargon, word-spinning, and castles-in-the-air theorizing that characterizes much of "expert" philosophy.

The best part of Hunting is its balance of breadth with tightness, its manageably sized essays focusing on a wide variety of arguments for and against hunting. At the same time, recurring themes clearly come out and provide threads that weave the whole together.

Overall, the anthology contains challenging philosophical arguments for the justifiableness, if not the need and essentiality, of hunting--from supporters, detractors, and fence-straddlers . It is thus most useful for hunting critics, I think, since it will challenge them to rethink their assumptions and their arguments...and strengthen their argumentative muscles. More importantly, it will give them a glimpse into the opposing camp via the articulate discussion of philosopher-hunters. Those who already hunt or even just think it is not ethically wrong could surely benefit from reading as well, in that it would give them more insight into the discussion about hunting as a philosophy and a way of life.

General readers may not have as easy a time with the anthology as readers with some experience in the qualities and conventions of academic, philosophical argument. But the book is not about syllogisms or elitism or obscurity. It is practical, about philosophy in practice and not philosophy in abstract, and thus it can in fact serve as "philosophy for everyone" who cares to undertake the task of reading and thinking.

As a result, it is a valuable anthology on an important contemporary topic and touches on some of the most important ethical, cultural, and environmental issues of our time. While it may not actually convert anti-hunters or enlighten hunters, it will (helpfully, I think) challenge convictions, raise questions, and provoke serious thought. And that alone, in an age of Google-mind and short attention spans, is always something to be thankful for.

Product Description
There may be no better example of American individualism and rugged outdoorsman than the 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt. In this volume we find two of Roosevelt's works on hunting, "Hunting Trips of a Ranchman" and "The Wilderness Hunter", combined into one volume. Roosevelt, who as President would bring some 230 million acres of land under the protection of the National Parks and Forest Services, was a great naturalist and his love of the outdoors is evident in the depictions of these books. Careful attention is devoted to the sport of hunting as these books work as both nature travelogues and practical treatises on how to bag game both big and small. Roosevelt recounts numerous hunts in this volume which will thrill and delight the hunting and nature aficionado alike.Amazon.com Review
It's no secret that America's most bully president was alsoits most bully outdoorsman and conservationist; what's often forgottenwas how beautifully and authoritatively he wrote about the wildernessand his considerable experiences there. These two pre-White Housenarratives--Ranchman was originally published in 1885,Wilderness eight years later--are rich and vivid. The formerchronicles Roosevelt's sojourns in the Dakota Badlands; the latter isan extended love letter to the pleasures and challenges of outdoorlife. So what if some of his 19th-century ideas seem politicallyincorrect by the standards of the next century--magnificent prose isstill magnificent prose. "Nowhere, not even at sea," writesthe future First Hunter in one haunting passage, "does a man feelmore lonely than when riding over the far-reaching seeminglynever-ending plains ... [but] after a man has lived a little while onor near them, their very vastness and loneliness and their melancholymonotony have a strong fascination for him." By comparison, theisolation and weight of the Oval Office must have seemed like anafternoon stroll in the park. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Ted's Excellent Hunting Adventures
The two books contained in this Modern Library edition are organized by species with each chapter devoted to hunting a particular animal during a hunting trips in the late 19th century in the American West. Some hunts were primarily intended to harvest meat while others were more oriented towards collecting trophy specimens. At other times Roosevelt stumbles upon game and kills it merely because it happens to cross his path. The bloodthirstyness of the hunters will be a shock to modern readers. Even those familiar with hunting may be taken aback by Roosevelt's "kill anything that moves" hunting philosophy. A modern hunter is limited by hunting seasons, bag limits and will usually not kill females with young. This was not the case in Roosevelt's day. He and his hunting companions gleefully slaughter any animal they come upon whether it's a bear sow with immature juveniles or a large record-book specimen. It was a different time then but it is laughable to hear Roosevelt described as a concerned conservationist and proto animal rights activist if you have really read his writing. There is one particularly disturbing episode where Roosevelt is sitting beside a stream with his hunting companions and sees a small animal walking along unafraid. In a matter of seconds Roosevelt pounces on the small creature, gutting and skinning it with his bare hands and laughing at his Native American companion's uneasyness at his needless cruelty.

Roosevelt's writing has an unfortunate tendency towards hyperbole. For example, he is incapable of simply eating a meal, instead he has a magnificent feast or a delicious repast. There is an annoying tendency to employ cute phrases that grate on a modern reader's ear. He refers to bears as "Ephraim" or "Bruin" and all large animals are "brutes" or "savage brutes." Putting aside these minor complaints this book is a fascinating historical document which contains information about the natural history of North American game species that is still useful to hunters and outdoorsmen today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quintessential Roosevelt
This volume will be enjoyable to anyone who loves nature or reading about nature; it will also interest the hunter and naturalist. See the events that help shape the life the greatest president this country has ever seen. A true conservationist, Mr. Rooselvelt was a REAL nature lover - his opinions were shaped through personal experience.
The two books in this volume are highly recommended.

I have an original copy of the "Hunting Trips of a Ranchman" published in 1900. I found the book to be completely engrossing and was unable to put it down until read. It was one of those that I hatted to see end. This book give a very accurate look at the times. ... Read more

Product Description

This superb documentary collection illuminates the history of witchcraft and witch-hunting in seventeenth-century New England. The cases examined begin in 1638, extend to the Salem outbreak in 1692, and document for the first time the extensive Stamford-Fairfield, Connecticut, witch-hunt of 1692–1693. Here one encounters witch-hunts through the eyes of those who participated in them: the accusers, the victims, the judges. The original texts tell in vivid detail a multi-dimensional story that conveys not only the process of witch-hunting but also the complexity of culture and society in early America. The documents capture deep-rooted attitudes and expectations and reveal the tensions, anger, envy, and misfortune that underlay communal life and family relationships within New England’s small towns and villages.

Primary sources include court depositions as well as excerpts from the diaries and letters of contemporaries. They cover trials for witchcraft, reports of diabolical possessions, suits of defamation, and reports of preternatural events. Each section is preceded by headnotes that describe the case and its background and refer the reader to important secondary interpretations. In his incisive introduction, David D. Hall addresses a wide range of important issues: witchcraft lore, antagonistic social relationships, the vulnerability of women, religious ideologies, popular and learned understandings of witchcraft and the devil, and the role of the legal system. This volume is an extraordinarily significant resource for the study of gender, village politics, religion, and popular culture in seventeenth-century New England.
