Product Description

The four living species of horseshoe crabs face a set of growing threats to their survival, including the erosion and/or man-made alteration of essential spawning habitat, coastal pollution, and overfishing. Horseshoe crabs are “living fossils”, with a more than 200 million year evolutionary history. Their blood provides a reagent, known as Limulus amebocyte lysate or LAL, that clots in the presence of minute quantities of bacterial endotoxin; the LAL test is the state-of-the-art methodology used to ensure that pharmaceuticals and surgical implants are free of contamination. Horseshoe crabs are an integral part of the food web in coastal marine ecosystems, and their eggs provide essential food for shorebirds in the Delaware Bay estuary each spring. The commercial fishery for horseshoe crabs, which utilizes animals for bait, contributes to the economies of coastal communities.

This book consists of papers presented at the 2007 International Symposium on the Science and Conservation of Horseshoe Crabs.

Murder, revenge, romance, personal insecurity and intelligence...What more could you ask for in a book?!?Let's add... setting the story in exotic Spain and Morocco, grounding it with legal/business proceedings, contradicting Denton Wright's personality with the discipline of tae kwon do to the disorder in his own life and you have a spellbinding story that you won't want to put down.As Denton and his friends doggedly pursue the questions swirling around his father's murder, his own personal demons tail him.By the end of the book, you will feel like your travels with Denton have resolved more than one dilemma.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Olive Horseshoe by Ben F. Small
Title: The Olive Horseshoe
Author: Ben F. Small
Publisher: Night Shadows Press
ISBN: 978-0-9799167-2-4
Pages: 357

Depth of character and exotic locales keep the action rolling at a clip which allows us license to accept that Denton Wright had become a billionaire at such a young age, that his insecurities were the driving force behind his martial arts training, and that he'd been on an extended kayaking--and soul-searching--trip through Maine when his father was murdered.

The prologue, which depicts the torturous murder of the senior Mr. Wright and a fellow traveler on a seniors' excursion through Spain and Morocco, gives us as few clues to work from as it does Denton and his assistant, Mandy. Enter Jenna Rogers, daughter of the second ill-fated traveler and her California winery foreman Carlos, to rub raw the tangled mass of emotions.

The killer(s) left one signature calling card: The Columbian Necktie.

Add to the mix Howard Wright's Manhattan law partner and his son, travel snafus, language barriers, break-ins, subsequent and supposedly unrelated murders, alpha-male personality issues, high-end surveillance gadgetry, an international drug cartel, and sheer gut instincts--and it's one hell of a ride!

Will Denton find his soul as he grapples with the twisted minds of those intent on destroying him--and every other life he touches?

Delightful mystery/suspense/thriller. A very satisfying read.

This suspenseful tale has its origins in the murder of two elderly men on a Moorish tour of Morocco and Spain while in Cadiz.Denton Wright made a couple of billion dollars creating and then selling a dot.com company. He disappointed his murdered attorney father by not going to Harvard Law, and their relationship was at best strained. The other victim owned a California winery, supervised by his daughter.

Wright goes to California and meets with the daughter and they decide to learn about the murders.Along the way, Denton and his accompanying characters learn a lot about themselves and life in general.A well-constructed tale, it is fast-paced and well-written, and highly recommended. ... Read more

Product Description
Surviving almost unmolested for 300 million years, the horseshoe crab is now the object of an intense legal and ethical struggle involving marine biologists, environmentalists, US government officials, biotechnologists, and international corporations. The source of this friction is the discovery 25 years ago that the blood of these ancient creatures serves as the basis for the most reliable test for the deadly and ubiquitous gram-negative bacteria. These bacteria are responsible for life-threatening diseases like menengitis, typhoid, E. coli, Legionnaire's Disease and toxic shock syndrome. Because every drug certified by the FDA must be tested using the horseshoe crab derivative known as Limulus lysate, a multimillion dollar industry has emerged involving the license to "bleed" horseshoe crabs and the rights to their breeding grounds.

Since his youthful fascination with these ancient creatures, William Sargent has spent much of his life observing, studying, and collecting horseshoe crabs. As a result, he presents a thoroughly accessible insider's guide to the discovery of the lysate test, the exploitation of the crabs at the hands of multinational pharmaceutical conglomerates, local fishing interests, and the legal and governmental wrangling over the creatures' ultimate fate. In the end, the story of the horseshoe crab is a sobering reflection on the unintended consequences of scientific progress and the danger of self-regulated industries controlling a limited natural resource. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A book to raise interest in horseshoe crab issues, and not resolve nagging management questions...
What if there was a special formula for a product that would detect Gram-negative bacteria (many of these bacteria cause disease) that was easy to use and make? What would this formula be worth, and how important would it be it preserve all the ingredients so that it can be used in perpetuity?

The formula exists: Limulus amebocyte lysate, a compound found in the blood of the horseshoe crab.

In Crab Wars, author William Sargent reviews briefly the history of the discovery of this lysate, the emerging industry associated with bleeding horseshoe crabs for medical research and public health, the ongoing harvesting of crabs for bait, and especially the legal wrangling of those making money (lots of it) from crab harvesting and bleeding, the state and federal regulators and managers of the ocean regions home to horseshoe crabs, and (even more briefly) the role of horseshoe crabs in ecosystem processes.

Sargent is a horseshoe crab advocate, and the flavor of the book is one that discourages overexploitation (he believes in exploitation, particularly because of the importance of the lysate in medicine).

As sympathetic as I am to ocean conservation issues, I have to admit that Crab Wars was uneven in its approach to horseshoe crab conservation. It really didn't make a case for the importance of horseshoe crabs in oceanic and terrestrial ecosystems (mentioning it isn't the same as making a case). It seemed to vilify horseshoe crab users while making conservationists saintly.

There are many, many ocean species being overexploited. To delve into the horseshoe crab story, I expected a deeper, richer review.Books like Voyage of the Turtle (by Carl Safina) and Cod (by Mark Kurlansky) come to mind.Crab Wars was notof this caliber. However, if you look at the websites of horseshoe crab exploitation apologists, you certainly won't find a balanced discussion of the issues.Infact, apologists state "The companies that produce [lysate] go to great lengths to ensure that the animals used in the making this valuable, life-saving test are handled with care and respect."When Sargent discusses bled crabs leaving the labs and heading right to the fishing boats to be chopped up for bait, the "...handled with care and respect..." statement doesn't ring true (although I certainly have no idea whether this practice continues today).

So Crab Wars is an imperfect start in learning more about the use, and abuse, of horseshoe crabs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should Be Required Reading In Our Schools& Colleges!
The previous reviewer must have a big ax to grind! His ad hominum attack on the author is outrageous, and ridiculous! I have both a medical research background, and lived many years near the Atlantic Ocean. Horseshoe crabs were once so common, you practically tripped over them, now they are virtually nonexistent!

Horseshoe crabs are in such big trouble that the Governors of New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia have drastically reduced the allowable catch off their shores! The situation has deteriorated to the point that the Audubon Society is concerned about the potential extinction of certain migrating birds, which are dependent on Horseshoe crab eggs! Should we just sit on our hands in order to keep one tiny, and economically insignificant industry - whose sole purpose is to turn these ancient, and medically priceless, creatures into bait - happy? Sorry! No way! These offshore waters belong to all of us! They are not anyone's private domain to destroy at one's leisure for monetary gain!

1-0 out of 5 stars No stars!
This book appears to be largely the product of one man's personal agenda.Readers should use extreme caution in reading and using the "information" in this book.I encourage every reader who is seriously interested in horseshoe crabs to follow up by fact-checking with research scientists, biologists, and local conservation groups-there are many involved with horseshoe crabs.Hence, there is information available on horseshoe crabs from reliable and reputable primary sources. Before spending your money here..do your homework!and before acting on anything in this book, find the truth for yourself from those who do scientific research, who have dedicated their lives to studying these unique animals, and who take a pragmatic and scientific approach to conservation without manipulating the public with overly emotional and inflamatory propaganda. After that, if you are still curious, check it out from the library first...you'll thank me later. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A unique insight into the Security Council
Very few representatives in the Security Council have written about this important forum at length.Lord Carradon did, and his account of how Resolution 242 was hammered out still constitutes essential reading. But the period he describes, marked by the Cold War, is long gone.Cameron Hume (a senior American diplomat at the UN, later ambassador to South Africa) wrote a brilliant account of how work within the Security Council helped bring to an end the murderous Iran-Iraq war in 1987-88, just after Cold War tensions started to dissipate.

Chinmaya Gharekhan picks up where Hume left off, but from a different perspective: that of a non-permanent member, albeit a weighty one in international relations, India, which he represented on the Council with great skill and integrity in the aftermath of Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990.He views the wrangling among the 5 permanent members (and the frequent vanity of the rest) with wry detachment, but also quite critically in terms of long-term outcomes and consequences. His writing has the clarity of a top-notch diplomatic dispatch, but also contains admirable depth of analysis derived from many years of reflection on the events he discusses before he consigned his thoughts and recollections to the page.

Gharekhan subsequently served as UN Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali's representative within the key informal consultations of Security Council members, a difficult job of intermediation which again acquainted him with the Permanent 5, not always seen in their best light in the give and take of private negotiation.Gharekhan is more generous in his judgment of Boutros-Ghali than many others have been, but he knew him better than most.

Finally, Gharekhan served as the UN's political envoy in the Middle East during the dog days of the Clinton administration leading up to the (failed) Camp David talks between Israeli PM Barak and the Palestinian Authority's Yassir Arafat.Gharekhan, looking back at the Middle East from these multiple perspectives, provides valuable insights.(He is today the Indian Prime Minister's special envoy to the Middle East, and thus still very much "in the game".)

In sum, while potentially dry at first glance, this slim volume contains a treasure trove of observations and commentary that no serious scholar of multilateral diplomacy should pass up and that the general reader can learn a great deal from with pleasure.Strongly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must read" book for anyone interested in contemporary international affairs
"The Horseshoe Table: An Inside View of the UN Security Council" has been written by an insightful and experienced diplomat, Ambassador Chinmaya Gharekhan. It provides an intimate account of how the most powerful organ of the UN - the Security Council - works or fails to work. While much has been written about the Council, no publication comes close to matching Gharekhan's personal knowledge about the Council, having served for many years as a Member, its President and as the Secretary-General's Personal Representative to the Council.Since most of the work of the Council actually takes place in informal sessions, closed to journalists,Gharekhan's notes and perceptions about the issues, personalities and the role of the Secretary-General reveal a heretofore unknown wealth of knowledge about such international crises such as the Balkans, Rwanda and others during the decade of the 1990s.Moreover, it is written in an enjoyable style with considerable tongue in cheek humor. The book is an invaluable contribution to diplomatic history and a highly recommended enjoyable read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brighty of the Grand Canyon

5-0 out of 5 stars Brighty: Of the Grand Canyon
This is an excellent children's book. It contains history, adventure, suspense, concern for an animal, and good wins over evil. I highly recommend it for 8-12 year old children. Adults would enjoy it, too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet, sad stories from grandpa
My grandpa spent time in and around the area in the 1930s and 1940s, working at his cousin's trading post, and claimed to have known Uncle Jimmy as an old man.In his garden he had statues of a prospector and a mule, and after he gave me this book (and my own resin 'Brighty", we would talk about "burros" as he always called Brighty, and his time in the desert.
This book is a nice Wild West adventure, complete with a badguy who really did scare me as a kid. There is something stark and melancholy about the setting and the story, as well as the "typical' Marguerite Henryromanticisation, but it's a nice little story for kids interested in the Grand Canyon, the West, history, etc.I think my brother - a history buff from the moment he could read - got more out of Brighty than I did - I preferred "King of the Wind."
But the memories of grandpa and his "burros" will always be immortalized in this book for me, just as my love for horses (and their kin)will always be a tribute to Grandpa's memory.
