5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read
This was a great read. The book made me laugh out loud and made me want to cry.The characters in the book is unlike any before, yet relatable. Once I started reading the book, I didn't stop until I finished it.Linda Warren is a great writer and I look forward to reading more of her books.I loved this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars enjoyable Texas two step romance
Wealthy socialite Peyton Ross drives through Horseshoe, Texas like a bat out of hell; going at least twice the speed limit. The sheriff gives chase, but the spoiled brat accelerates as if the sirens were not blaring behind her.She is finally forced to pull over and is arrested for reckless driving as well as speeding.

The Judge is disgusted with Peyton's nonchalant attitude.Frustrated and irate with her, she is fined and sentenced to two weeks of community service. The widowed Sheriff Wyatt Carson reluctantly gives his spare room to the recalcitrant woman to sleep as the town has no rooms to rent. Both detest the attraction between them especially the lawman as he feels guilty about betraying his high school sweetheart late wife Lori, who died six years ago. However, his eight year old daughter Jodi and her grandma think otherwise.

This is an enjoyable Texas two step romance as the attitudes of the three prime players change due to the influx of the new relationships between them. The character driven tale stars a strong support cast, but is owned by the lead couple and his daughter.Contemporary fans will enjoy this fine tale from the moment the sheriff arrests the party girl not realizing at that moment when she frustrates him with her cavalier attitude she captured his heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it. Wonderful book.
A wonderful book for young teens and pre-teens. (probablly would go best with kids ages 9-13). I personally loved it. I read it about two years ago, so i cant remember too much, but what i do remember is that it was great. heres what happened:
Josie Grace is upset that her parents have to sell their riding school and all the horses. Josie is having trouble selling the horses off, and wants to find the perfect owner for each. This book is mainly about finding the right owner for Faith, the riding schools most gentlest mare.
THis is a must-read. I've only read two other books in the series, but i'm sure they're good too.

5-0 out of 5 stars review for school
This book was a wonderful book about giving up what you love. I think that even children who don't like horses can enjoy this book.I will probably read other books in this series because I liked this book so much.

4-0 out of 5 stars Horseshoe Trilogies, The
This is a fantastic series of books for the girls (ages 8+) who can't get enough books about horses. It is a nice series that does not need to be read in order.Several of the books are back-ordered and my 10 year old can't wait until they come in.She reads them in 1-2 days.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
I thought that this book was very good. The main character, Josie Grace, doesn't quite understand why her parents cannot relocate their riding stables but is eventually resigned to the fact that they need to find new homes for their three school horses Faith, Hope, and Charity.

Parting with Faith is difficult for Josie because she learned to ride on the horse. Now in her twenties (very old age for a horse) Faith needs a person who will care for her and not constantly want to gallop around. I pesonally think that the book was a little unrealistic because normally people list all of their stock at the same time is they need to sell it, but enjoyed the story very much. A good choice for anyone who is in the process of needing to sell their horses or has gone through this situation. Suitable for grades four and up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent Book!!!!
I thought Keeping Faith was one of the best books out of
1,2,and 3.It was very temting for Josie when all kinds
of people want Faith but she just not sure witch
person is the one to have her.And its bad enough
that she has to leave Hope and Charity the other
horses because they have to leave the Riding Stabels.
She also has a bad time parting with her horses.
Even thought her parents are fealing bad about leaving
the place,Josie thinks she is the only one who
really feals the parting is the worst.I won't give it all
away. You read the book and hope you like it. ... Read more

Nancy Drew, Bess, and George Fayne were waiting for school to end. They were excited to go to their riding lesson after school. Bess showed all of her classmates her mothers earings. They were lucky horseshoes earings. Bess, Nancy, and George ran when the bell rang. They walked to the ridinglessons. Mandy was showing off her new boots for the lessons. The ridingteacher gave everyone horses, but Mandy got a wild horse. The horse was bigand black. Bess got Mandy's old horse Buttercup. Editorial Review

Product Description
The rules of horseshoes have changed over the years, for much the same reason pro football's have: to encourage more scoring. In 1909 the stakes protruded only 2 inches above ground, whereas today they tower 14 inches. The distance between the stakes, the size and weight of the horseshoes, and, of course, the strategy of the game have all evolved, too. Boga recounts horseshoes history in this handbook's opening chapter, then gets down to the real point -- how to play the game right and well. He describes styles of pitching (ie various turns and the popular 'flip' technique), the proper grip, stance, and swing, and 'winning the mental game'. Moreover, he advocates a holistic approach that involves visualisation, focus, and concentration. With nearly half the book devoted to the official rules and master schedules for tournaments, and considering Boga's clear instruction and obvious dedication, this is a book for the serious player. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Bocce/Horseshoes Connection?
Horseshoes by Steven Boga

Review by Mario Pagnoni
Author, The Joy of Bocce

Noting that some of my New England bocce-playing friends also pitch horseshoes, I searched for a book on the game.If there were none, I reasoned, I'd write it myself.Steven Boga saved me a lot of time and effort. He has put together a clear, concise, information packed 100-page booklet that more than does the sport justice. It covers in detail the techniques of grip, stance, swing, release, and follow-through.It includes very detailed diagrams for court construction and even lists the complete rules of the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association of America (NHPA).

Boga's brief, entertaining history of horseshoes chronicles the evolution and standardization of the game.He notes that before equipment manufacturers got involved, "Shetland pony shoes sometimes had to compete against those of Clydesdales."

I particularly like the way the author relates horseshoe pitching concepts to more familiar sports."Take a practice swing up and back..." he says, "like a baseball player taking shadow swings." And calling a shot that was short of the stake an "air shoe" made me laugh out loud.

Clear, helpful drawings eliminate any chance of misunderstanding Boga's well crafted text. Finally, quotes from interviews with top players and anecdotes attributed to past pioneers of the game intersperse the book. This is a gem for the aspiring horseshoe pitcher and will entertain and inform the seasoned veteran as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bob's comments of Steven Boga's horseshow book.
I gave this book to my husband Bob and the following are his comments:

I found Mr. Boga's book concise and informative. It has an excellant description of the history and development of the sport. His instructionson pitching can easily be understood by the beginner.I had a personalrevelation. My grandfather was originally from Kansas City. Mr. Bogaexplained this was one of the great early centers of horsepitching. Mygrandfather taught my father and me how to pitch horseshoes.Neither of usmatched his skill. I am now 72 years and still love the game.As Mr. Bogasaid in this book, there is a feeling of peace and satisfaction you receivewhen playing the game. Horseshoe people are congenial pleasant people. Iwould recommend this book for pro's and beginners. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars History At Its Best
Mr. McIlnay has written a very good history of events concerning the railroad Horseshoe Curve near Altoona Pennsylvania. The Horseshoe Curve was a great instance of civil engineering in America.Mr. McIlnay's book is history at its best - very well written, very informative, well referenced, and of great interest.

Mr. McIlnay divides his book in three sections. The first two sections concern World War II.One is of the Nazi saboteurs in America in 1942.These saboteurs had Horseshoe Curve as their target as well as other sites. The second section concerns the restriction and sometimes internment of designated enemy aliens (aliens who originally came from countries the United States was at war with). Both well written sections are quite relevant to issues surrounding the present war on terror as well as being very thorough and interesting.

However, the most interesting section concerns the building of the Horseshoe Curve for the Pennsylvania railroad. The Pennsylvania transportation system in the 1830's and 1840's lagged behind the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in Maryland and the Erie Canal in New York as a means of east west transport. This lag changed due to J. R. Thomson of the Pennsylvania Railroad and the engineers and managers he hired. The Horseshoe Curve and uninterrupted railline of the Pennsylvania Railroad through the Alleghenies was the result.Mr. McIlnay tells this very interesting story like a novel but with ample detail for the historical specialist to learn much.

This book is absolute must for anyone even remotely interested in American history.

Product Description
Baxter Black, the world’s bestselling cowboy poet, author of Cactus Tracks & Cowboy Philosophy, and public radio’s favorite former large animal veterinarian, is back in the saddle with a hilarious new roundup of essays, commentaries, and campfire verse that speaks to the cowboy soul in each of us.

Drawn in part from Baxter’s wildly popular NPR commentaries and syndicated columns, Horseshoes, Cowsocks & Duckfeet offers a generous helping of his tender yet irreverent, sage-as-sagebrush take on everything from ranching, roping, Wrangler jeans, and rodeos to weddings and romance, the love of a good dog, dancing, parenting, cooking up trouble, and talking about the weather. If you haven’t ridden with Baxter before, find out what more than a million dedicated fans are laughing about inside and outside the corral. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Baxter Black review
I personnally have not read this book.It was a gift to my son in-law.However, he LOVES it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Never heard of Black before this book.
I had no idea he was on NPR.When my neighbor loaned me Horseshoes, Cowsocks and Duckfeet I was a long time getting around to picking it up.When I did it was only because I knew I needed to be able to tell the neighbor I had done so (out of courtesy).
I'm glad I did read it.Black probably isn't for everyone. There's a body of experience required to understand the point of his anecdotes and laugh at his humor. If you are person who's been around farm animals and live in a rural environment you'll probably love this book.I did.
On the other hand, if you an urbanite and have never been anything else you'll most likely consider it a waste.
The humor is dry and the anecdotes have an 'insider' quality probably unintended by the writer. The cultural abyss between urbanites and rurals grows ever wider. If this book doesn't span the gap there are still enough people with rural experience to appreciate and enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cowboy Stories
I have heard Baxter Black on the radio for years and I finally bought one of his books(I plan to buy more). Well, it was worth every one of the 60 miles I had to travel to purchase it. His stories or poems are truly laugh out loud. I liked the story about the cowboy trying to do his laundry and getting in an accident and his truck caught fire and a box of ammo was in the truck. He writes about everyday happenings that happen to plain ordinary folk. Everyone hears stories such as these, but Bax's writing style make the stories highly readable. I felt as I was reading them that he was there tell the tales. I highly recommend the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not What I Thought
I have heard Baxter Black on a several occations on NPR (National Public Radio just in case you don't know.Check them out...) over the last couple of years. Most of what I did hear I liked so when I found this book I thought it would be great.

This is a collection of short, and I mean less than 2 pages short, stories as told by Black on NPR during 2001.(I think that's right...)Admittedly, something is lost in the translation from radio to book form.Baxter has a way with words and the way he says them is as meaningful a part as what he says.I was glad most stories had a brief introduction and for the glossery at the back of the book for those "non-cowboy" types like myself.I also liked the fact that I could read a story or two, put the book down and be able to come back to it a few minutes later or a week later.

I read all 75 (ish?) stories; I found my dad in one story (you know which one, Dad!), really enjoyed about 10, liked probably 40 or so and missed the point, didn't "get" or just didn't like the rest.
Perhaps it is the differences in age and sex (me being a 30-something married woman) or the generational differences or just the lifestyle differences but in some of the tales I had a hard time relating.I did, however, send the book on to my father who is older and wiser and much more learned in the ways of veterinarians, cowboys and politics and I bet he gets much more out of the book than I.

If you are already familar with Baxter's other stuff and like it then I believe you will not find any fault with this newest book.If this is your first Baxter Black book as it was mine then I suggest one of his more favored volumes to see if you like it first. ... Read more

Product Description

The American horseshoe crab that comes ashore on the East Coast in vast numbers to mate and nest is much the same creature that haunted the coast before the time of the dinosaurs. It is among the world's most intensely studied marine invertebrates, critical to our understanding of many groups of organisms, both modern and extinct, and crucial to the ecology of large estuaries such as the Delaware Bay. Some stocks of this great survivor, whose ancestors made it through the mass extinction some 286 million years ago, have been severely depleted today because of overfishing and habitat destruction.

Carl N. Shuster, Jr., H. Jane Brockmann, and Robert B. Barlow are at the forefront of research on Limulus polyphemus, and in this book they bring together twenty scientists who have worked on all aspects of horseshoe crab biology to compile the first fully detailed, comprehensive view of the species. An indispensable resource, the volume describes the horseshoe crab's behavior, natural history, and ecology; its anatomy, physiology, distribution, development, and life cycle; the puzzle of its immune system; and its present management and future conservation.

This was a very good book. The story is of the Grace family trying to find a new home for their horse Hope. Unlike Faith (the horse from the first book), Hope is very average looking if not a bit ugly. Due to her allergies Hope looks terrible and not many people are interested in buying her.

After thinking about donating Hope to the local PAWS animal sanctuary the Grace family is contacted by Jill, a woman from the local home for disabled children. Hope seems like the perfect horse for them due to her calm disposition and steady gait. Over the course of the book Josie learns more about how animals can help humans and finds the perfect home for Hope in the process.

I personally preferred this book to the first book in the series because the characters seemed more natural and focused more on helping each other. Overall an excellent series with good characters and sweet horses. ... Read more

Product Description
The Horseshoe Curve is known worldwide as an engineering achievement by the Pennsylvania Railroad. This landmark, located just west of Altoona, opened to traffic on February 15, 1854, and it enabled a railroad line to climb the Allegheny Mountains and the eastern continental divide. The Horseshoe Curve's construction impacted railroad design and development for mountainous terrain everywhere, enabling access to coal and other raw materials essential for the industrial age. J. Edgar Thomson, chief engineer of the Pennsylvania Railroad, is widely recognized for his engineering and design of the Horseshoe Curve, a concept never utilized previously. Today the curve is still in use and sees approximately 70 trains daily. Through vintage photographs, Horseshoe Curve chronicles how this marvel remains one of the vital transportation arteries linking the east and west coasts of the United States. ... Read more
