Product Description

Offense may often get the glory--but defense is what wins games. Get the inside scoop on this important, but sometimes overlooked, aspect of hockey. Highlighted by 120 full-color action photographs of NHL players in mid-game, and liberally sprinkled with personal tips from luminaries such as Ray Bourque, Chris Chelios, and Scott Stevens, Win with Defense shows you how to master the art of controlling the play and stopping the puck. Playing defense in all three zones, maintaining position, keeping the opposition bottled up, goalproofing your line, skating backwards, and making body contact: every skill young players need to play the game like the NHL greats is broken down into easy-to-understand steps with how-to photos and text. Sean Rossiter, as the writer of nine hockey books--including three in this series--is a real expert on the subject, and was aided by an advisory panel of coaches from every level of hockey. It's everything that will help up-and-coming players to master both the basic and advanced skills of the game.64 pages (all in color), 8 x 10.

3-0 out of 5 stars A book for young players
This is a book written for young players with points to keep in mind when playing. It is written for young players (lots of color pictures and key points to remember) but does not get into any analysis of defensive systems.Good for young players to read. Not so good for coaches who want a better understanding of defense.

Product Description
The sport of ice hockey is going through a transitional period, losing popularity in the United States even as it gains momentum in other countries. The Hockey Dad Chronicles is the touching and funny story of one season in the youth hockey career of Ed Wenck’s son, Oliver, when he played for the Indianapolis Junior Ice. Hockey parents spend an inordinate amount of time and money on their child’s sport of choice — considerably more than soccer, football, or basketball parents dish out. They get their children to the ice rink for 7 a.m. ice time, they travel with them to other states for games every other weekend — and if they’re anything like Ed Wenck, they spend a lot of time sitting in bleachers wondering at the absurdity of it all. As youth hockey grows ever more popular, increasing numbers of parents are seeing their lives taken over by their children’s hockey careers. The Hockey Dad Chronicles will be a familiar, amusing, and moving reminder to them — and to all parents who devote themselves to their children’s extracurricular activities, whether they’re sports, drama, or dance — of what it’s all about. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Oh NO!!!
Very fun read.I just enlisted my first son, 3.5 years old, into skate lessons; primarily so I will have someone to play pond hockey with, and of course with hopes of having Lord Stanely in my living room someday. But the book let me on to somethings I was not prepared to face, but was apprehensibly knowledgable of: the parental sacrifice! But the book makes it seem worth it.In ways I hope he doesn't want to play, nor his brother, but how could he not.Plus, I really want them to, and this book will probably help you feel the same.Funny, motivating, and sad; someday my little boys will get in a fight on the ice.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is your life...If you're a hockey mom/dad
This book was a fantastic read. Written from the hockey dad's prospective it tells the stories of what you WILL encounter if your child chooses to play ice hockey. As i'm on year number 4 myself with my son and and year 3 with my daughter I found over and over the situations I encountered were par for the course. What madean even more personal connection was that many of the ice rinks mentioned I too have been to and thought the same things. The stories of a travel hockey family will naturally appeal to other hockey families, but any parent dealing with their kids sporting teams will enjoy the writers creative words.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very funny and very "real" look into the lifestyle known as Youth Travel Hockey
A must read for anyone with a child in travel hockey.Having a son playing travel hockey in the same town just 5 years removed from this written account, I find the parallels eerily amazing! The parents, the rinks, the personalities, the kids, the stories are identical.Everything from the "GLM" (good looking mom) with the boob job, to the out of control psycho mom going after the kid that harmed her sweet num nums! A very funny and entertaining read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Hockey Dad Chronicles
I ordered this book about a month ago as a present for my husband. After reading the stories (which are practically like reliving the experiences for any hockey parent), I enjoyed the book so much that I ordered several additional copies that we intend to give out to other 'hockey dads' that are friends of ours.

5-0 out of 5 stars Realistic Humor
Even tho I'm not a parent of a kid on any type of travel team, every inch of this book was relatable. A fun, and very funny venture through the life of an everyday dad as he supports his son's sporting desires. Every page offered a laugh, and leaves you desperate to see what the next page holds. Very well written. ... Read more

Product Description
The first full-scale biography of a legendary and award-winning NHL goalie who transformed the game.

“There are a lot of very good goalies, there are even a fair number of great goalies. But there aren’t many important goalies. And Jacques Plante was an important goalie.” Ken Dryden

On and off the ice Jacques Plante was a true original; he was extremely talented, boastful, defiant, mysterious, and complex. Throughout his tumultuous career as a goalie, he played for Montreal, New York, St. Louis, Toronto, Boston, and Edmonton. His contributions to and impact on the game were extensive and are reflected in today’s rules, equipment, and style of play. Thoroughly investigated through archival and primary research, and including interviews with figures such as Jean Béliveau, Henri Richard, Dickie Moore, and Scotty Bowman, this biography sheds light on one of the most pivotal figures in the history of hockey.

2-0 out of 5 stars Shakey Facts, Stilted Writing
Jacques Plante was, unquestionably, one of the most important athletes in the history of sport. He was ahead of his time in many ways as detailed by author Todd Denault. He was the first goalie to take a stand for the mask ( he did not invent the mask; the scholarship is still out on that but he deserves most of the credit nonetheless ), was the first to make roaming from the net acceptable, approached off-ice training differently, lobbied for deferred-payment contracts, advocated positional coaching, etc. Also, indisputably, he was great. Great. His record and longevity speak for themselves. Having a modern era bio of Plante on the bookshelves was a crying need in the world of hockey literature, and Dennault's effort is game here, but does fall short in key areas.

While the book has several factual mistakes ( Eddie Johnston did not start his career with expansion; he was an established NHL starter in the early 60's...Tony Esposito did not wear a Fibrosport mask...Plante is extremely over-credited for the successes of goalies he coached )including one that, along with some noteworthy omissions, betrays the author's agenda. ( Please undertsand that I find it wholly acceptable to hold a point of view and advocate for it in your wrtiting, but you do need to present and face the facts head on. )

One revealing mistake is in the description of Plante's remarkable comeback with St. Louis after a 3 year retirement. His first game back was not a shutout. His first game back was a 4-3 loss to Chicago in Chicago. The author says Plante partner and long-time rival Glenn Hall was in goal for that game. Wrong. The author also elects not to document what Plante said in his first press conference when St.L drafted him. He stated that Hall would be the best back-up goalie he ever had. Stl management quickly made him apologize for that statement.

The author skirts around the difference between what the Vezina stood for when Plante was winning it consecutively for the Canadiens, and what it means today. Today, it goes to the best goalie in the league. It is an individual award. Then, it went to the team with the least amount of goals against, a virtual team award. When Plante was winning Vezinas, he was NOT the league's First Team All Star goalie...most of the time Hall ( who played on the defensively challenged Blackhawks ) was. The author does not acknowledge the signficance of the fact that when Plante was dealt from the Habs to the downtrodden Rangers, his successor in net, Charlie Hodge, won the Vezina continuing the Canadien tradition of defensive excellence. Simply stated, the author gives Plante too much of a pass on his weaknesses as a player and as a person far too often.

The book is also written as if the author gets a percentage for using the word "unfortunately" when any of Plante's teams lost. That's a little "homer-ish" for my tastes. The foreward by Jean Beliveau is basically a reprint from Le Gros Bill's autobiography, and the photos chosen for the book are the most-often seen of any. Nothing new or rare here.

Plante did not need the author to whitewash his deficiencies. His place in history is secure. This book is good, but it is not as special as its subject was.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Man - Great Read
I am a cursory hockey fan at best. somewhere i read that this was a very good book -- so i figured I would expand my horizons.
not only is this a keen insight into plante's life and how he changed hockey, but it's also a great look into the history and growth of the NHL.
written very well. i thoroughly enjoyed it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Virtuoso
The mid to late 1950's spawned an era in hockey that could have been called the Golden Age of Goalies.Terry Sawchuck, Glenn Hall, Johnny Bower and Roger Crozier all patrolled the nets into the mid-1960's and beyond, but none achieved the heights and glory of Jacques Plante.

Later additions of padded greatness included Tony Esposito, Ken Dryden, Grant Fuhr, and Dominek Hasek. All lay claim as the best that ever was, but Plante stays in the argument.

He was meticulous, eccentric, detached, and offbeat, but he was undeniably great. He played until he was 46 years old and took a studied, professorial approach to his craft. He was also a winner, whose ambition fueled him to seven Vezina's, five Stanley Cups and the admiration and respect of a generation of hockey fans, coaches and players.

This a crisply researched and well documented biography. It looks into the psyche of its subject in hard depth, and takes in not only biographical material of other hockey bios, but also interviews many of those who knew Jacques Plante.

Often inscrutable, Plante lived through his achievements both on the ice, and later, as a mentor. His monastic pursuit of hockey excellence is unmatched.

This is an excellent read on a highly interesting subject. It is recommended highly for any serious hockey fan.

4-0 out of 5 stars Old time hockey
As a hockey fan and an even bigger fan of the history of the game and it's great players it was great to read about all the old time hockey players opinion of the game in that era and about one of the greatest innovators in the sport of hockey. Mr. Plante revolutionized the position of goaltender, and the game has never been the same.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Character Study into the Man Behind the Mask
This is an excellent book about one of hockey's greatest netminders Jacques Plante. He reinvented how a goalkeeper played the game with his unique style and the advent of the mask. The book shares a portrait of the man behind the mask and it reflects his devotion to the game through his continuous study on how other goalkeepers played the game, and it also brought forth his character as a man.Too often athletes are not viewed for their human qualities. This book provides a perspective on how Jacques Plante faced all that life threw at him on and off the ice.His analytical qualities as per the game are well-noted and as a fan who grew up watching him play as a kid, I still remain in awe of him as a hockey player and a person. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wow - moe'ness and silliness
Okay - where to start.First off, this one (I think) Is better than number 6.For some reason, I just couldn't get into number 6.This one was a little sad at some parts.I wanted to hit a certain male character with glasses (why is it always the male characters with glasses that tend to be so smart - yet complete idiots at some things) a few times...
Oh, the after story bonus story was very cute.I was so moe that I was blushing and laughing in class.Definitely worth reading.
I know a lot of people don't want romantic manga - but I REALLLLLLY want this one to have romanticness in it.Call me a sucker for romance but it's so adorable. My favorite character - well - I'm sure you can guess....my favorite obstinate male with glasses who is on the front cover...-swoon- Talk about in need of some fan service! ;)

Still, I loved the story - the resolution had me laughing because it was so silly. And the story itself was probably silly but it was a nice read.Definitely killed time. And I definitely can't wait for the 8th one to come out.

Kudos.I give this a 4.2 out of 5. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT PURCHASE EXPERIENCE
The used book that I ordered was in excellent condition and the seller sent the book immediately.Super pleased.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brightly colored, and a lot of fun!
This cute little book (30 pages, excluding the title page and so forth) is another excellent example of the work of the incomparable Charles M. Schulz. In this book, Charlie Brown receives a phone call telling him that Snoopy is in the emergency room of the local hospital. Snoopy maintains that he was playing hockey, and was tripped by Wayne Gretzky! Regardless of how he was hurt, the doctors want to operate on his knee. But, do dogs have knees?

When I was a child, I absolutely loved the Peanuts, and I am so pleased that my own children have now fallen in love with those same funny characters. This book is large and attractive, with brightly colored pictures that are sure to please the young reader (and Peanuts fans of all ages)! My children and I highly recommend this book to you!

Product Description
During the 1980s, the geography of minor-league professional hockey changed radically, moving from its roots in the Maritime provinces and in the New England and midwestern states into the American south. In addition to cities like Oklahoma City, Dallas, Charlotte and Norfolk, which had long traditions of minor-league hockey, unlikely places such as Biloxi, Baton Rouge, Little Rock and Augusta hosted teams. Over an 18-year period, minor-league hockey was played in 72 different southern cities, and at one point there were more minor-league teams in Texas than in all of Canada. Yet the players—and owners—have always been predominantly Canadian.

Hockey Night in Dixie examines this phenomenon with an historical overview of the period, including interviews with people involved in the founding and early years of each of the 13 leagues. There are also in-depth portraits of four teams, one from each of the four lower minor leagues that played during the 2005–06 season. These portraits feature interviews with owners, coaches, players, officials, fans and reporters. Amply illustrated with photographs, Hockey Night in Dixie paints a vivid picture of this extraordinary development in minor-league sports. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent summary of Southern hockey
The book did an excellent job of explaining the 1990's-2000's phenominom of minor league hockey in the Southern United States. However, the one thing missing was explaining why some markets had long been established as hubs for hockey in the South, and not just by-products of the rapid expansion that took place. Also goes into detail of one team in each of the four surviving leagues (ECHL, UHL, CHL, SPHL), describing the daily life of the players, coaches, management, owners, and fans of these teams.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loveeee it!
I love My Heavenly Hockey Club, period! It is great. Although the fact that the girl sleeps most all the time and eats all the other time which I honestly think could be used for her to realize she's in a club with some really hot guys (cept I don't prefer the twins) and she needs to realize it. I thought #3 was one of the best ones in this whole series.
You realise Takashi is actually a really sweet, and mega sexy guy, and you see Hana without her constant eating and sleeping, although she does find it funny to mess with Takashi while he lost his glasses. I mean, he actually realises, hey, maybe she's cute..although that ends immediately when they're rescued and she jumps on the helicopter cramming food into her mouth...But I wishhhhh they would have kept that going because I think Takashi and Hana are soooo cute together!

Loveeeeee this series.

Product Description
The Broome Dusters played their first home game at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena on October 18, 1973. The game was symbolic of what was to come. Down 6-0, they fought back only to lose 8-7. Their fan support followed a similar pattern, lukewarm at first and then ferociously loyal. Hockey became a passion for local fans and has continued to be so to this day. When the Dusters disbanded, they were followed by the Whalers, Rangers, B.C. Iceman, and the Senators. Hockey in Broome County tells this fascinating story with more than 200 photographs and engaging text. Relive the heroics of the Dusters' Rod Bloomfield, "the little guy that everyone picked on." Then skip ahead to the crowd-pleasing toughness of the Whalers' Randy MacGregor and the more recent brilliance of the Senators' Jason Spezza. ... Read more

Hockey fans have long known that their sport is the coolest game. Now they have a reference book worthy of the game itself. Andrews McMeel Publishing, Total Sports, and the National Hockey League have teamed up to produce Total Hockey: The Official Encyclopedia of the National Hockey League-and it's the book the sport has been waiting for.

Total Hockey is simply the most authoritative, complete, and fact-filled volume ever produced on the game. And it is total in scope, covering not just the National Hockey League in the most comprehensive fashion ever, but also chronicling pre-NHL hockey, minor league and junior hockey, rival leagues, and hockey around the world. And it's as up-to-date as the historic USA women's hockey victory at Nagano.Amazon.com Review
Hockey has come a long way from its humble beginnings on thefrozen ponds of Nova Scotia in the late 1700s. It has come so far, infact, that many of its earliest practitioners may not recognize muchof the game in the modern era. But the same thrilling combination ofspeed, strength, and skill that drew schoolboys onto the ice in theearly days continues to pack arenas with hockey fans. Now, with thepublication of the monster-sized Official Encyclopedia, every piece ofinformation any dyed-in-the-wool hockey nut could ever hope to have isavailable. But you really don't have to bea stats junkie to welcome this excellent compendium. In fact, youdon't have to know much about hockey at all, because the book coverseverything--from the origins of the game on the lush fields of Ireland(surprisingly enough) to the 2006 Winter Olympics, and everyimaginable point in between. Six thoroughly researched sections arebroken down into more than 70 chapters covering the NHL and otherNorth American leagues (including Junior, Minor, and Women'sassociations), international hockey, facets of the game, and yes--thenumber cruncher's most cherished friend--biographical and statisticalinformation on just about anybody who ever touched a hockey stick.Make no mistake, this book is a load. Tuck it under your arm and youwon't be going anywhere fast, but you'll go there wellinformed. --George Laney ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a huge hockey fan anymore but
Damn this book is Flawless it has Olympic stats it has some stats on the old players. The Only thing missing was 1892-1917 stats for players who did not play in the NHA or The NHL. I love the sections on the stats it has the players complete minor league and college stats as well as his Pro stats. It has the place he was drafted and all the transactions. This book has a wrap up of the Draft from 1965-1998 and does a fantastic job at it. The Stats and the Draft coverage is the best.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resources, but 1st edition is full of inaccuracies
I'm one of those schleps who had the misfortune of investing the CDN $70.00+ dollars on this book when it first came out, only to learn that many of the (in particular non-NHL) statistics were inaccurate or missing completely. This is understandable for the very early players, but still, it seems as though more effort should have been put into this initially.I am interested in the old Hamilton Tigers franchise, and prior to getting the book had already done some research into the early careers of some of the players.Right off, I noticed that there were problems with the Leo Reise and Goldie Prodgers listings.These--and no doubt innumerable others--were rectified in the later edition, but that is little consolation for me.I made my investment, and unless I can find the revised edition cheap, I have no intention on blowing more money just to finally get what I should have gotten in the first place.Still, it has been a useful book at times, so it's not a complete loss, I guess.

5-0 out of 5 stars massive
this book has anything and everything you want to know about hockey its almost to much stuff

5-0 out of 5 stars Why even think "no" about this book?

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
Not only does this book provide you with detailed drills , it backs it upwith specifics on what areas the drill works on , and highlights. It alsohas well written introductions on individual areasand the skills neededto to become a better offensive player , well worth the time to read anddigest the knowledge it provides .

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book
I haven't read many books about hockey coaching, but after recieving this book, I'm pretty happy with it.It teaches you the basic shooting principles and spends some time on each type of shot. Then it goes into sections about buildings skills for each type of offensive play your team might need to work on: 1-1's, setting up plays, etc.A good variety of drills are offerred in this book and the nice thing is you can photocopy them out one by one because they are restricted to facing pages - so that you don't have to carry the whole book around.I'll be using these drills with my kids roller-hockey team and I think it will help.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best resources I've come across
Santa dropped this one in my stocking. It's great, particularly if you are searching for half-ice drills -- about half of the 75 drills are designed for half-ice.The strength of this book is its emphasis on puck movement to create scoring chances. The corollary is also true -- by emphasizing movement on the attack, goaltenders also improve their positioning and mobility. The drills are well-suited to kids aged 9 and up. I have shared the book with other coaches and, perhaps the strongest endorsement --my house league hockey association has ordered copies for all of our coaches! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not very fast paced
The book effectively and accurately presented the facts but, was wasn't fast pace enough to keep my interest.I will say that it was very exciting in the way that it desribed the USA vs. Soviets game.Overall, it was good but not good enough to get that fourth star.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the Greatest Coaching Job in the History of Sports

A great chronicle of those heady days in Lake Placid nearly 25 years ago. Everyone seemed to find something they liked in this improbable victory. For me it was the coaching job turned in by Herb Brooks. It may be the greatest coaching job in the history of sports. Here are excerpts from an AP article about the late Coach Brooks which says it all:

Herb Brooks was behind the bench when the American Olympic Hockey team pulled off the greatest upset ever at Lake Placid NY in 1980, beating the mighty Soviets with a squad of mostly college players. That shocking victory, plus beating Finland for the gold medal, assured the team a place in immortality.

The young U.S. team was given no chance against a veteran Soviet squad that had dominated international hockey for years and had routed the Americans 10-3 in an exhibition game at Madison Square Garden the week before the Olympics.

On Feb. 22, 1980, the U.S. team scored with 10 minutes to play to take a 4-3 lead against the Soviets. As the final seconds ticked away, announcer Al Michaels exclaimed, "Do you believe in miracles? Yes!"

It remains one of the most famous calls in history.
Brooks' leadership helped turn a ragtag team into champions. He had hand picked each player.

"You're looking for players whose name on the front of the sweater is more important than the one on the back," Brooks once said. "I look for these players to play hard, to play smart and to represent their country."

Interviewed years later on why he headed to the locker room shortly after the Miracle on Ice, he said he wanted to leave the ice to his players, who deserved it.

Players kept a notebook of "Brooksisms," sayings the coach used for motivation, such as: "You're playing worse and worse every day and right now you're playing like it's next month."

But, before playing the Soviets, Brooks told his players: "You're meant to be here. This moment is yours. You're meant to be here at this time."

"He was ahead of his time," team member Ken Morrow said. "All of his teams overachieved because Herbie understood how to get the best out of each player and make him part of a team. And like everyone who played for him, I became a better person because I played for Herb Brooks."

Born in St. Paul, Brooks played hockey at the University of Minnesota, where he later coached from 1972 to 1979, winning three national titles. He was inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 1990.

When Brooks decided to coach the 2002 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team at Salt Lake City, he was asked why he would return after writing the most improbable story in hockey. "Maybe I'm sort of like the players -- there's still a lot of little boy in me," Brooks said. "And maybe I'm a little smarter now than I was before for all the stupid things I've done."

Brooks was the last player cut on the 1960 U.S. gold medal team, and unfairly so, the victim of favoritism by his coach. But he persevered, and played on the United States Olympic Hockey Team in 1964 and 1968. And when he coached the 1980 Olympic Team, he did not repeat the mistake made by his 1960 coach. It was difficult and painful, but he did the right thing selecting the players for his 1980 team. And as they say, the rest is history. Or was it really a miracle? That is left for each reader to decide for themselves.

In an interview at his White Bear Lake home not long before his untimely death, Brooks described to the Minneapolis Star Tribune about watching one of his favorite movies, "Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory."

"You know, Willie Wonka said it best: We are the makers of dreams, the dreamers of dreams," Brooks said. "We should be dreaming. We grew up as kids having dreams, but now we're too sophisticated as adults, as a nation. We stopped dreaming. We should always have dreams. I'm a dreamer."
_________________________________________________________________

The book is the story of the team and its coach as they prepare for and play in the 1980 Olympics. Now out of print, original copies are sought after collectibles usually priced over $150, and well worth the price in my opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BestTrue Sports Story
I bought this book 25 years ago and loved it. It is much more accurate than the other stories/movies because the authors discribe the contributions of ALL of the teamates and not just the media favorites. Mark Johnson actually gets recognition in this book. It also does a great job of showing how Herb Brooks did the coaching job of his life. The players bonded because they all hated the way Herb worked them. They won just to show him they could. Now if I could just remember who I lent my copy to......

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book!
Very well written. The "insider's" story on how the team was put together.

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I HAVE EVER READ
