5-0 out of 5 stars Francoise Allaire is a genius on ice!
I bought this book for my son who has been a goaltender for 8 years. He has absorbed everything he could on goaltending and found this book to teach a vast amount of information that he had never heard of, techniques that were immensly helpful and positive for goaltending.

After reading the book he attended the goalie camp which was awesome. Francoise and hs staff were very personable and charismatic, taught the attendees with alot of patience and with a system where they could understand and retain the information easily.

This family is highly behind Allaire on his books, videos and teachings!

Thanks Francoise for sharing your knowledge and giving so much of yourself to the goalie minded youth of today!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide for non goalie coaches
This is an excellent book for goalie coaches & coaches at the rep or house league level who require assistance in establishing a training and development program for young player and can be applied to adults as well.I have written a guide for adults as we are built differently. email if u rinterested and is for both men & women

5-0 out of 5 stars A great teaching tool for the coach
I've been a hockey goalie during 18 years. Now it's time for me to get involved in a different way... as a coach. The younggoaler has a lot to learn and a coach can do a lot of damage if he doesn't communicate properlythe techniques. The book is a very good tool for the coach. It describesclearly the basic techniques and there are a lot of pictures thatillustrate them. I coach 9 yo kids, and I've been able to use many of thedrills described in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book for Head coaches/kids/parents.
This is a very good book for non goalies (parents, coaches & kids starting out to play goal. It provides a good plan for developing skills over a three to four year plan. It is geared for the serious coach (rep)& young goalie, but not for adult beginners. After teaching goaltendingfor 15 years , I developed a guide for adult beginners men &n women andyou can contact me at the email below for other info. The Allaire book isan excellent technical starting point and have used it myself, HOWEVERADULT BEGINNERS ARE DIFFERENT

5-0 out of 5 stars A-1! I've taught it for 10 years, learned so much !!
Goaltenders seem to be loners on a team, however the position is very simple...One needs to build a strong foundation of skills that are developed in a structured and logical manner. Francois addresses these areas, and provides an A-1 training and development guide to be applied on a season long and year long basis. He also addresses the mental aspects that are so critical to a person playing goal. The one area he does not address adequately is females, ie., different physological builds and some the protective equipment is different. He tends to cater the text to the rep and travel level of team and does not cover the parent/coach/goalie relationship to any degree, however it is a very good book !!. I have read about 10 other books on goaltending, I am writing one for adult beginners as I teach adults 18 to 55 how to play goal...it is a treat!!! ... Read more

Product Description
This richly illustrated, thoroughly researched and completely unauthorized biography takes readers behind the legend of the great Gordie Howe. Signed by the Detroit Red Wings at 16, Gordie became a six-time leading scorer, a six-time Hart Trophy winner as the most valuable player, and he surpassed Rocket Richard’s NHL goals record to reach an amazing total of 801 — unmatched for years until Gretzky finally caught up to his mentor and idol. Gordie also includes a new introduction in this recreation of the glory of hockey's golden age. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT HOCKEY BOOK
Gordie a Hockey Legend is book is a great book for anyone who knows about hockey and what the sport is and how it has evolved for its early stages with the popular players like Gordie Howe, He really set the bar in hockey back in his days. He held the NHL scoring title with the most goals in his career with 801 goals until "The Great One", Wayne Gretzky passed him in April of 1993.Gordie is really a Hockey legend.

Gordie is really a legend. He was Known for his ability to be tough anytime during a game, and get the goals, and stand up for his team at anytime needed. This Book was really good in my view. It described his great career, and his life leading up to and being in the NHL.

I would recommend this book to a lot of my friends, especially to my friends that like, and or play hockey. This book really shows the meaning for, and how hockey started to become more popular especially in the United States and in Canada. I really liked this book, and it is one of my favorites, and I would recommend it to anyone. This is truly a great book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gordie Howe
Gordie Howe: A hockey legend tells about his whole life. From when he was little kid, to when he made it in the NHL. It tells about how he first came upon hockey as a little kid. It tells about his carrer and the NHL. I thought that this book was ok. Not horrible but not excellent. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about gordie howe, or wants to read about him.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book on Gordie Howe!
This book tells about Gordie Howe, one of the best hockey players ever, and his career in the NHL.In the beginning, it tells about his first couple of seasons, and then tells more about his great career and facts about himtoward the end. I learned a lot about him from this book, for example, Ilearned that he has played for two teams, the Hartford Whalers and theDetroit Red Wings, and that he was considered one of the greatest playersof his time.

4-0 out of 5 stars An enthralling look at professional hockey's past, and stars
As a lifetime fan of the Detroit Red Wings, I was overjoyed when I found that there is a recent biography of Howe that is much more up to date than many written in the 60's and 70's.This book gives the reader an insidelook at what it was like to get into the NHL in the 50's, and what it tookto stay there and become a star.Mackskimming is very candid when talkingabout the front office's team management "politics"The readeralso gets an up-close look at other great stars of the era such as RedKelly, Ted Linsay, Maurice "Rocket" Richard, and coach JackAdams.A must read for any TRUE hockey fan.

3-0 out of 5 stars Starts out great, but ends up only a good book on Howe.
The book starts out covering Howe in excellent detail. Several pages coverhis first seasons. Then as if the author lost interest, the decades goflying by.My reasons for reading the book was to find out, why Howe wasconsidered great, how Howe compared to Richard, how the game changed overthe years and what it was about Howe that enabled him to play for so long. The book only addressed how Howe established his early greatness. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview
I found this book informative and a concise source. As a hockey coaching neophyte, and a dedicated student of the game, I believe Chambers did a good job on his book. Many of the chapters could be (and are) the subject of a dedicated book.

The first chapter on PHILOSPOHY OF COACHING is a very good and complements the USA Hockey philosophy. His chapter on BASIC HOCKEY GUIDELINES presents an excellent, concise, overview of the principles of the game.

The chapter on SKATING presents good overview for a subject very difficult to teach out of a book (see POWER SKATING by Laura Stamm for an excellent book on this subject).

In the ten or so books I have recently reviewed and read in my journey to learn more about hockey, I observed authors often appear to find it difficult to provide an overview that introduces the subject and gives a proper discussion of the fundamental (the why). There is often an underlying presupposition of knowledge that may not exist.Chambers does not fall into that trap.

In Chamber's chapters on OFFENSIVE/ DEFENSIVE TEAM PLAY, he introduces principles and terms specific the subject, and then presents drills that emphasize that aspect to players. In later chapters on PLAY OF THE DEFENSEMEN/FORWARDS, he presents useful tips and skills for these players.

The chapter on FACE OFF ALIGNMENTS is the best I have seen.At a recent practice, our senior coach was teaching players where to move if they were in offensive or defensive zones.I came back from practice hungry to learn more and could not find a reference that covered more that a few scenarios (including USA Hockey).Chambers presents 11 strategies/player assignments for offensive zone face offs, 7 for neutral zone, and 11 for defensive zone; covering full strength and one or two man short situations.

There are chapters on PENALTY KILLING, POWER PLAYS, AND GOAL TENDING.I enjoyed the concise coverage in the chapter on SCOUTING, GAME PREPARATION, AND BENCH MANAGEMENT chapter.

The chapter on STATISTICS presents an overview of the importance of each statistic, and emphasizes the need to use them POSTIVELY.He also discusses the importance of videotaping games, and balances his discussion with a warning to use statistics and videos wisely.

The chapter on CONDITIONING is a good overview that includes the three energy systems and importance of periodization (see references by Tudor Bompa for more details on energy systems and periodization.See especially "Total Hockey Conditioning: From Pee-Wee to Pro" and "Total Training for Young Champions")

The chapter on NUTRITION is balanced and presents a good overview of carbohydrates, fats, and protein and how the body uses them.He also emphasizes hydration (see Strength, Conditioning and Injury Prevention for Hockey by Joseph Horrigan, Earl Joseph Kreis for a great discussion on hydration).

There is also chapter on MENTAL TRAINING.If you've watched the shift of momentum during an NHL game, or better yet felt it when you're on the bench, you can appreciate the importance of this aspect of sports.

Chambers book has a large bibliography, although the chapters are not scientifically cited to individual references. The book lacks an index, but it is well organized.

After having recently read the USA Hockey series for coaches (Mite through Pee Wee), they were useful, but disjointed because they were obviously written by a committee of authors and often not edited for consistency. In their recent updates, they often refer to figures that are not present, use undefined terms, have symbols on the drill diagrams that don't match previous drills, and have other inconsistencies. There is good information presented if you get beyond the inconsistencies.

In my opinion, hockey is such a complex and fast moving sport that it is difficult to capture the many nuances in the pages of a book.In my search for a book that provides a one-stop reference, Chambers comes the closest.

2-0 out of 5 stars NOT SO COMPLETE
While this book may abound in drills, very little attention is paid to discussing positional play, and what benefit is derived by each position from these drills. At best this book is geared to the elite level coach who already has an indepth understanding of the game and is only looking for something new to use in practices.

To the neophyte coach, I would suggest taking the USA Hockey coaching certification clinics or, at the least, buying their coaching manuals which have a detailed reasoning behind each skill development drill.

Ultimately the job of the coach is to develop the player's skills, and unfortunately Complete Hockey Instruction does nothing to help the coach in this regard. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Buy for history, not for how-to
I was disppointed in this book, especially since it was touted to have "comprehensive" rules. It has only one chapter on rules, and even then it barely brushes the surface.

If you want to know about the background of how modern hockey came to be, it's great. But I wanted to know more about strategy, rules, penalties, officials' hand signals, etc. and there is very little in it. Had I known what I know now, I wouldn't have bought it. Very disappointing.

2-0 out of 5 stars not horible
alot of history not allot of strategy or technique.

2-0 out of 5 stars For trivia lovers only
I bought this book to learn how NHL hockey is played. I read the Complete Idiot's Guide Football and found it to be a very well organized, comprehensive description of the game. This book about hockey is nothing at all like that. If you don't know how hockey is played, you won't be any smarter after reading this. There are 298 pages of history and only 18 or 19 pages on the rules. You will learn what icing and offside penalties are and which way players are not allowed to hit each other with the stick and that's about it. Nothing at all about strategy and tactics and no glossary of terms. I was disappointed. If you want to learn the basics of hockey, look elsewhere. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a great conversation piece
because people who know me or thought they did, do a double take of this book that's found a home on my coffee table.
"Hockey..?!"they say.
Yeah, hockey.
It opens up a new dialogue for my guest. Just flip through the pages and the history, record breakers, photos and personalities, giving the game another dimension for those who are often the ones at home, wondering what it's like to be in the stands, hearing the puck glide across the ice, feeling the cold atmosphere surround them or see the body slams in mid-air, leaving one speechless and in awe.
The photos, of course, are lovely with the stories universal, dialogue simple, keeping my interest, often reminding me why I want to read it. The chronological set-up provides a good reference without confusing or distracting me from my attention, with bits of trivia sprinkled throughout, placing a face on the game. S.I. knows how to have a sense of humor in good taste. Makes a great gift for those who love and appreciate the game.

P.S. Congradulations, Jordin Tootoo! You made S.I!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sports Illustrated The Hockey Book
This was a gift for my 13 years old cousin that plays hockey, he is very happy with this book, and it makes a great gift for those that like sports.

2-0 out of 5 stars No Mo?
The only mention of Mike Modano is his picture on the back with 19 other skaters, and the listing of names in the back inside flap has him in the wrong order. Sorry, but someone in SI has a problem with him.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a Must Book for Hockey Fans
Sports Illustrated has put together the definitive book about the sport of ice hockey, drawing on its article archives and its photo library. This is a marvelous book, with huge, gorgeous color photographs. If you are a hockey fan, this tome is a valuable edition to your library. It also makes a great gift.

The book is best when it draws on its vintage files of the hockey greats. The best of the book, in this fan's opinion, are the stories and photos that covered the golden age of the NHL, immediately after World War II, when the NHL consisted of only six teams.

The minuscule number of teams (Montreal Canadians, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Black Hawks and the New York Rangers) meant that only the cream of the crop in hockey made the big leagues. All the big boys are here:Maurice (the Rocket) Richard, Jean Beliveau, Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita and the Esposito brothers;also the acrobatic goalies of that era, including Jacques Plante, Terry Sawchuk and Glen Hall.

Those were the days when the goalies didn't wear facemasks. The book includes a spectacular photo of Jacques Plant that appeared on the SI cover of Feb. 17, 1958 (unlike the cover photo in the magazine, the photo in the book is uncropped). The photo shows Plante peering out of his goal with his chin almost on the ice as he prepares for an assault by the New York Rangers. The tense-ness of the moment not only shows on Plante's face, but also on the faces of the fans in the stands behind the Montreal goal.

The book also includes the hilarious story written by George Plimpton when he played 15 minutes of an exhibition game in the Boston Bruins goal. Plimpton later published a book on that experience, but the original magazine article reprinted here will leave anyone squirming with laughter as the Big Bad Bruins set up the hapless writer - who played in the goal by while skating on his ankles.

One of the highlights is the famous photograph of Bobby Orr, stretched out horizontally three feet off the ice after scoring the wining goal in the 1970 championship game that gave the Bruins their first NHL Stanley Cup in 29 years (disclosure: the writer covered that game for UPI and interviewed Orr in the locker room after the game.Earlier this year, I ran into Orr and he signed a copy of the photo with the inscription, "Thanks for covering this game").The account of how the photographer shot thatamazing photo is also included.

Of course, the story of the 1980 Olympic Gold Medal won by the Americans is here, but for once the SI editors missed a chance to tell the complete story of American Olympic hockey:in the 50's, 60's 70's and 80's Olympic hockey was played by amateurs, no pros, and it was hockey at his finest.Dave Christian was on the 1980 team - and he was the son of Billy Christian and the nephew of Roger Christian who were two of the stars of the 1960 team that also won the gold medal in a fairy tale manner. And, of course, Herb Brooks the coach of the 1980 team was the last player cut from the 1960 team (further disclosure:the writer played on the 1965 U.S. National Team that included both Billy and Roger Christian, as well as Brooks).

There is also the touching story of Travis Roy, the young hockey star from Maine, who was permanently paralyzed in the opening seconds of his first game for Boston University in 1995.

If there is a weakness to the book it is the lack of documentation on the earliest days of hockey in Canada. Howie Morenz and the great goaltender Georges Vezina are mentioned, of course, but the focus of the SI book is on modern day hockey. This hockey fan wished there were more of those grainy photographs of the earliest players wearing their skimpy uniforms. There is too much lore from that era that is missing in this otherwise excellent book.

The book also seems a bit disjointed. When we do get photos from the earliest days, they are interspersed with photos of modern-day hockey. It can be confusing.

But overall, this is a fabulous book that documents the wonderful sport of ice hockey - the national sport of Canada, and a sport that has spread throughout the United States and Europe and more recently in Asia.If you love hockey, you're going to love this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Super Silly Sarah Star Simpleton Sawdust
To Reason Why is not the question. Someone left this book behind and there was not a thing to look at while I waited patentiently for my appointment. The pain of the extraction was not as awful as reading this work making me wonder if the tree huggers are right.Certainly a waste of a good tree to deliever a prduct that at best might serve to stablize a table with a leg too short. Her impressive background might place her on a par with the Virgin Mary or in political terms more of a Mary Magdalane. She is a true Fairey Princess of high moral values and thical standards that are so low you could trip over them. Idaho's loss is our pain and the lunatic fringe's gain.I strongly recommend this book for the weak minded. Two stars I have awared this book simply for the fact that the publisher deserves credit for being able to make a small mint off the fools that still don't have a hint about this leader of dimwits.

5-0 out of 5 stars A true patriot
I loved this book.To be honest, there has been alot of controversy over Sarah Palin and I wanted to read up on her background and form my own opinion.I couldn't put the book down.It was easy to read and in a time of economical, political, and ethical uncertainty this book was able excite me and encourage me.She is not just another politician. She is a strong, God-centered, family oriented woman who happens to be in politics. She embodies honesty, integrity, and transparency. She is a breath of fresh air.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sarah Palin
I got this book for myself and one for my brother. We both loved the book very much. It was interesting and not boring at all.

1-0 out of 5 stars Complete Idiot!
If you want to see the real Sarah Palin just go to [...] and listen to her mindless rants. Come on she's a complete moron. I hope that people don't look up to her they'd be just as stupid.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cuts through the mud
What an enigma.Sarah Palin is a hard to know from available writings in the marketplace of ideas. So, this book cuts through the mud.It is short on politics and long on personality. It is not a book to dig out political positions of Alaska's former governor, but it is a good book to see how she came to be what she is. It becomes clear in this book that through her life and its experiences, she is a strong-willed person who sets her face like a flint toward the direction she wishes to go. From the stories of her high school experiences to the stories regarding her political positioning, it became apparent to me that this is a person whom I would like to know -- a different opinion than that of what I had from merely reading what others say about her. ... Product Description

Hockey, like most sports, is a game of numbers—team stats, player stats, standings and, of course, the sweater numbers. To hockey fans, numbers such as 4, 29 or 99 all speak for themselves. The numbers—like the players who wore them—have become icons.

But what happens when two or more great players have worn the same number? Who was the best? Is Gordie Howe the quintessential number 9, or does the honour belong to Maurice Richard, Bobby Hull? And what about number 29? Ken Dryden or Felix Potvin?

In Hockey Night in Canada: By the Numbers, veteran hockey analyst and sportswriter Scott Morrison surveys the field and offers his own recommendations. Featuring statistics, facts, contributions from other Hockey Night in Canada personalities, and full-colour photography throughout, this book is sure to spark a lively debate.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hockey by the Numbers
Good book, however, it states in the foreward that a player cannot be the best at more than one number. This is true, but it should have been that they were eligible for just that one number thus freeing up that one rank for another individual.

4-0 out of 5 stars Why not 'Buy The Numbers'?
Yesterday, I saw this book after going to the website that originates in Canada, called 'Chapters,' and that is where I saw the book called 'Hockey
Night in Canada: By The Numbers' which actually was published last year.

I'll have to think about buying it this weekend which is unlikely, but I
may take it into consideration after paying some of my expenses first--but
I believe that it will be a great book to collect, and one to remember!

And my two favorite hockey teams, for many years, are the Rangers, and the
Vancouver Canucks; I've been to both New York and Vancouver in my life!

4-0 out of 5 stars By The Numbers #1
If you love hockey then this is the book for you. Scott Morrison and all the faces you know from Hockey Night in Canada outline the famous and infamous who have worn an NHL jersey from #'s 1 - 99. Each jersey number has a featured player that is/was the best to wear that number.Great pictures of past and present players and lots of hockey nostalgia.
A great hockey resource you will go to again and again. ... Read more

Product Description
The wildest seven years in the history of hockey

The Rebel League celebrates the good, the bad, and the ugly of the fabled WHA. It is filled with hilarious anecdotes, behind the scenes dealing, and simply great hockey. It tells the story of Bobby Hull’s astonishing million-dollar signing, which helped launch the league, and how he lost his toupee in an on-ice scrap. It explains how a team of naked Birmingham Bulls ended up in an arena concourse spoiling for a brawl. How the Oilers had to smuggle fugitive forward Frankie “Seldom” Beaton out of their dressing room in an equipment bag. And how Mark Howe sometimes forgot not to yell “Dad!” when he called for his teammate father, Gordie, to pass. There’s the making of Slap Shot, that classic of modern cinema, and the making of the virtuoso line of Hull, Anders Hedberg, and Ulf Nilsson.

It began as the moneymaking scheme of two California lawyers. They didn’t know much about hockey, but they sure knew how to shake things up. The upstart WHA introduced to the world 27 new hockey franchises, a trail of bounced cheques, fractious lawsuits, and folded teams. It introduced the crackpots, goons, and crazies that are so well remembered as the league’s bizarre legacy.

But the hit-and-miss league was much more than a travelling circus of the weird and wonderful. It was the vanguard that drove hockey into the modern age. It ended the NHL’s monopoly, freed players from the reserve clause, ushered in the 18-year-old draft, moved the game into the Sun Belt, and put European players on the ice in numbers previously unimagined.

The rebel league of the WHA gave shining stars their big-league debut and others their swan song, and provided high-octane fuel for some spectacular flameouts. By the end of its seven years, there were just six teams left standing, four of which – the Winnipeg Jets, Quebec Nordiques, Edmonton Oilers, and Hartford Whalers – would wind up in the expanded NHL.

5-0 out of 5 stars WHAt a great book!
Fantastic read... funny and informative, the second I finished it I picked it up and began reading it for a 2nd time.It certainly makes me want to go out and pick up his book on the ABA.

4-0 out of 5 stars Terrific
Really a great book on the 7 year history of the World Hockey Association.Written as a verbal history with tons of first hand stories, this book is a quick read.Fun stories both good and bad, but always interesting.Amazon got the recommendations right when they paired this up with Loose Balls and Going Long.I have read both of those books and they are right in line with this one.The only reason this one doesn't get five stars from me is the lack of stats.I would have loved to have info in the back of the book on the yearly standings and stats leaders. It would only add a few more pages. The only stat included is a yearly listing of each time in the league from start to finish. That minor quibble aside, it was a great book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Roaring Fun in the WHA
I started following hockey in the early to mid-1970s but never paid much attention to the WHA. This book was a fascinating look back at how the league started, the wild characters that comprised it and the development of future NHL stars. Along the way we learn about players who "got too much too soon" and never fulfilled their promise as professional hockey players. Mixed in is a healthy dose of insight as to how the league inspired the movie Slap Shot. If you're a hockey fan, sports fan or a Slap Shot fan - give it a read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book that sheds light on a forgotten league.
This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. I found it thoroughly entertaining and informative. The WHA was before my time and I am sad I missed it after reading this book. I didn't know Gretzky, Messier, Bobby Hull, and Gordie Howe played in the league.

The stories about all the crazy antics of the players and owners are awesome. The movie Slap Shot was based off of people noted in the book. I coudn't put this book down. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about the World Hockey Association and its impact on the NHL and hockey in general.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book!
It was interesting to read the behind the scenes stories and how the WHA changed the NHL.I lived during those years and never knew half of what I learned from this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars As powerful as a Bobby Hull slap shot
"Hockey is my game--and it sure has been good to me." Thus Robert Marvin "Bobby" Hull, `The Golden Jet', the first player to equal and break Maurice `Rocket' Richard's then seemingly unbreakable single-season goal scoring record; the first hockey player to earn a million dollars a year; perhaps the most famous hockey player ever, begins his 1967 biography.

While out of print for many years, editions like the original Longmans Canada hardcover can still be found online at Amazon and Alibris, by the assiduous hockey book hound.

It is worth the search. Hull's book startles the reader with an elegant, gracious style that contrasts with the magnum force of his play. It is not difficult to hear Bobby's voice in the words, as he tells the story of his rise to the NHL. The book predates his eventual decision to abandon it for the unknown quantity that was the World Hockey Association.

Hull's prose is as direct, and often as powerful, as his legendary slap shot. "I expect to be paid adequately for the services I perform, and I expect to be clobbered by both club and fans if I let either down."

Hockey's first million-dollar man, Hull is candid about his motivation."People kept forgetting that hockey is also a big business. I'm not biting the hand that feeds me by suggesting there is nothing spiritual about hockey. I have a beautiful wife, three kids, a couple of farms stocked with the best cattle, two homes, cars, boats, and interests in a half-dozen business enterprises. I might have gotten all of this one way or another, but playing hockey enabled me to get it while doing something I love."

Forty-two years after its publication, the absence of pretense in Bobby Hull's story is still refreshing. His recollections, analysis of his profession both as business and sport make this a book not only for Hawks fans, but all hockey fans. And with photographic instructions of how to shoot the puck like Hull, and play the way he did, both on offense and defense, "Hockey Is My Game" will make you lace up your skates and take to the ice.
