A great book on the mental aspects of winning hang gliding.
I had met Rich Pfeiffer when I read this book, but I did not know him. After I read this book, I thought I might know him pretty well. This book is the ultimate book on winning hang gliding competitions. Not particularly the section on the equipment. It was written when the equipment was much less sophisticated than today. But it describes the mental preparation for winning that one must have in order to win consistantly without depending on luck. In a fairly esoteric sport, this is the only bookwhich deals with "Inner Hang gliding". This would be a trite phrase except that for Hang Gliding it is so true. If you want to win, you must go prepared to win and it starts inside your head. This book has been out of print for at least ten years and was probably not printed in great quantities in the first place, directly appealing as it does to only a few thousand people, but it should be considered the book to have for the aspiring hang gliding competitior. ... Humorous Classic, good as a suppliment
A hilarious introduction to the Hang Gliding scene.This book does not replace a training manual, such as the excellent one written by Dennis Pagen.It is a great source of advice for novice pilots who are just coming off the training hill.Most of the advice is serious and much of it cannot be found elsewhere.A lot of what he says is incidental to actually flying, such as how to treat people who shuttle your vehicle.There is some overlap between Fair's book and a beginner training manual, but his audience is for pilots who already (barely) know how to fly, and this perspective allows him to skip much of the basic how-to stuff while concentrating on how to apply it to real-world conditions.

Such as: how to launch in windy and gusty conditions, how to set up a landing on a small field, different types of turns, how to transition from a single-surface to a double-surface glider, etc. The tone of the book is like having a hip older brother or seasoned pilot take you under his wing and give friendly advice. The book has some of the author's own illustrations, which are effective if somewhat home-made.

There are some hilarious chapters dealing with snappy answers to stupid questions such as "how do you breathe up there?", "what happens if you hit an air pocket?", and my all-time favorite "what do you do whjen your arms get tired?".

The book is fun, cheap, and useful.If you aren't looking for a stand-alone Pilot's Bible, GO FOR IT.

Awesome in the extreme, reading this book made me want to rush out and buy a paraglider. A fantasticly easy book to read, hat`s off to the editors. This book rates high in my all time TOP TEN.

Expanding our flights
Until reading this book I was concentrating on unnecessary things during flight. It helps you get over the basics with clear instructions, and moves on to more advanced techniques like cross, towing, aerobatics. a real mustfoar ALL hang gliding pilots.

Required book for the advancing hang glider pilot
I first flew a hang glider solo at Wallaby Ranch Florida in June 1998.With the information I read in this book I have logged over ten hours ofsolo air time in 23 flights. Several flights longer than an hour. Oneflight lasted two hours. I cannot recomend it highly enough.

This book should be in every pilot's reference library
Dennis Pagen has professionalized the presentation of HG instruction in many works, and deserves the gratitude of HG pilots world wide.

This book, and the clear presentation of important concepts of thermaling, cross country flying, and speed-to-fly theory make it a gem of gliding knowledge for weekend and competition pilots.

The Bible for advancing hang glider pilots.
I have read Pegan's books since my first days on the training hill.The information in his writings have surly saved my life, at the very least Pegan's books have been my ground school. Preformance Flying is an up to date volume on all aspects of advanced hanggliding from judging conditions to equipment to towing to competition flying.
