Product Description
Formula 1 is automotive technology at its zenith. Each season, designers strive to make cars that are even faster while the sport's governing body simultaneously passes rules to make them slower. Still, the speeds continue to rise. The fully updated second edition of this authoritative book explains the technical changes imposed from the time of Alain Prost's 1993 world championship through the 2000 season. Current topics discussed include increased speeds despite the introduction of grooved tires; the special materials that allowed 1999 engines from Mercedes-Benz and Ford to rev at over 17000 rpm; and the spate of rear-wing failures that plagued 1999 preseason testing. In addition, highly respected Grand Prix journalist David Tremayne examines the design and testing processes, driver safety issues, current regulations, and the often contradictory perspectives of today's F1 contenders. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Glimpse Into the Recent History of F1 Technology
If you're already well-versed in the latest F1 technology and are looking to further your knowledge to the absolute edge of the "state-of-the-art", this book may seem a bit stale. Like any technology-related book, it has become dated quickly.

But if you're a information-hungry "techie" who is relatively new to F1, you will enjoy the book.It serves as a valuable reference guide to the recent (mid-90s) history of F1 technology. It helps you put things into perspective, explaining how current F1 technology arrived at its present state.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but..
This is a good book for anyone interested in Formula 1, provides good information and an "inside" view, but I found two problems. First this is a 1997 book sligthly revised in 2000, but it coversmainly F1 before 1997. Second, 95% of the photos are BW. In a F1 book, hardcover, this cost ??? Please... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 1998 Formula Year Book
This is a very informative book with insightful sections on the teams as well as detailed accounts of each race. Additionally there are backgound and update sections which also make for interesting reading. The photo'sare great and include behind the scenes shots as well as the on tracksessions. Also helpful are statistics which include race results, retirements, pit stops fastest laps etc. All in all a great book at a veryreasonable price.

5-0 out of 5 stars A should have for any Formula 1 fan.
As a Formula one freak, I haveto say that this is a very good book. It's filled with high quality color photos, description and statistics of each race in the 98 season (which includes the track map with the names of thecurves), handful of information about all eleven teams (with home addressand web site for each team) and even some interesting extra stuff that hasnothing to do with the 1998 season. It's definitely worth the money. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An easy and enthusiastic read
Legendary F1 commentator Murray Walker teams up with F1 journalist Simon Taylor to compile this updated version of the book that celebrates Murray's unbridled passion for Formula One.

In Formula One Heroes, Walker celebrates his most favourites F1 drivers of all time, providing great little snapshots of the likes of Fangio, Moss, Hunt, Andretti, Lauda, Prost, Senna and Mansell.

The presentation is nicely tailored, with general career stats for each and a couple of quick bullet points outlining why they make Walker's shortlist, before we get to the more detailed analysis of each character.

Despite having left the commentary box some years before penning this updated version with Taylor, Walker's passion for F1 is still very raw and tangible, and this is an easy and enthusiastic read from one of F1's most-loved personalities.

Product Description

The book in itself is a milestone in motorsport books history. It required 14 years of work from his author, who not only wrote all the texts, but also did more than 400 drawings representing all the cars from all the significant teams having entered the Formula One championship in the past 54 years! This unique feature allows the readers to see at a glance the evolution of all the Williams cars, for instance, since the creation of the team.  This huge and heavy (more than 10 pounds) box, with two volumes in fabric-style covers also features more than 1200 photographs, some of them exclusive from the collection of Bernard Cahier, the famous photographer from the '50s.  In its last section, the book also gives comprehensive results of all the Grands Prix of the history of F1, from 1950 until today. It features all the lap charts of all the races - despite the fact that the FIA (the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile) itself thought that these lap charts did not exist before 1958!  This third edition is entirely updated after the end of the 2006 season. Its page layout has also been improved since the first two editions to put more emphasis on the pictures. In France, the book will be published in its fifth edition this year. It won the prestigious award "Grand Prix du Livre" from the Automobile Festival of Chamonix.

5-0 out of 5 stars great product....hard encasing cover in bad shape
The product is really great, especially for F1 fans, who like great pictures, stories, etc...The three books came in perfect form, but the encasing hard semi-box was kinda of broken, a minor detail when thinking on the price paid and it was used.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great addition to any fans library
A lot of time and research has gone into this huge volume which in itself deserves 5 stars, except that there are many irritating errors throughout which may be due to the translation from French to English. There are many sentences which just stop in mid sentence and become very irritating after a while. It seems there was no proof reading done before publication. It also boasts a complete driver by driver line up, which I thought would include every F1 driver to date, but only includes the more prominent ones. It does however have a complete list of all teams that have raced in F1 with a complete chapter on each with drawings of all the teams cars raced as well as all the circuits old and new. All in all this is still a must have for any F1 fan. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Lauda's rant against "ground effects" in Formula One!
Niki Lauda is not a great writer, but he is an honest, straight-forward critic of "ground effects" and the damage they did to driving skill in the late 1970s and early 1980s. This beautifully illustrated, deeply nostalgic book examines the evolution of the Grand Prix genre through one of its classic decades, when the sport moved into the increasingly commercial and high-tech era. It is also the story of how sponsors took over the main identity of the teams, with the sport becoming global as the English-speaking drivers were joined by newcomers such as Emerson Fittipaldi, Ronnie Peterson, Jody Scheckter, Niki Lauda and Nelson Piquet.

5-0 out of 5 stars evocative and stunning
Formula 1 in camera 1970-79From the first page to the last this book will stir memories that, for those who were lucky enough to live through and witness first hand the events of this decade in formula 1 history will live for ever in one's memory. 4-0 out of 5 stars great formula1 time capsule
this is a great book - excellent photography, tells the story well in photos. very dynamic. print quality could be better, a lot better, but unless you spend much time reviewing high quality print jobs this probably won't matter to you. certainly a good value.

When Michael Schumacher crossed the finish line to win the 2000 Japanese Grand Prix, delivering Ferrari its first Formula 1 Driver's World Championship since 1979, motor racing fans around the globe rejoiced. This colorful insider's look at the most famous F1 team in the world includes profiles of Schumacher, teammate Rubens Barrichello and Ferrari technical director Ross Brawn; privileged views of car design and testing and the 2000 championship season; a look at typical raceday preparations and strategies; the team's dealings for financial and promotional support; and an examination of how the team honed its competitive edge during battles for the title in 1997, 1998 and 1999.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good Ferrari book, but nothing sensational
Part of a five-book set profiling top teams in Formula 1 in the late 1990s - which include titles on McLaren, Williams, Benetton, Jordan and Stewart - David Tremayne's Ferrari: Formula 1 Racing Teamfollows the formulae of its sister titles, although this particular version was republished in the wake of the team winning the coveted Drivers' Championship title in 2000, for the first time since 1979.

The book almost exclusively covers the team's rise under the guidance of Jean Todt, who was brought into an utterly dysfunctional Maranell squad in mid-1993.

The radical twin-floor F92A of 1992 had proved an embarrassment, and the separation of the team's design office (located in the UK, at the behest of John Barnard, the team's Technical Director at the time) from its factory was proving unsuitable.

At a high level, it analyses the operational and cultural change that slowly took place over the subsequent years, that saw the team successfully bring life back into the Prancing Horse when it was perhaps more of a lame donkey back then.

Crucial decisions - such as the hiring of Michael Schumacher, the forging of a complete technical team, a top-down restructure of the company - are examined, and the outcome was, finally, the all-important first Drivers' Championship since the Jody Scheckter-led campaign in 1979.

Tremayne is one of F1's celebrated journalists and writers, and his writing style here is easy to digest, and he paints a useful image for the reader.

The pictures used in the book are largely taken from the Sutton Images library, but I'd has at a guess as perhaps not the finest from the archives. Furthermore, the publishers insist in using this column-based format on the pages which does nothing to make it any easier to read, and gives it a rather high school textbook feel.

Die-hard Ferrari fans won't find anything particularly earth-shattering here, but it's an easy enough read and would be perfect for someone who knows little of the team's rise from the ashes.

2-0 out of 5 stars Quick run through of Ferrari F1 up to 1998
At Amazon.com, the publish date of this book is March 1999 but it is actually November 1998.

This is only a small book and do not expect much detail in the history of Ferrari F1.If you are a busy man and just want aquick run through, this will help.

Ferrari F1 fans, skip this one.Idon't think you will get any excitement from reading this book.If youlook for content, this one is lacking. If you look for colorful pictures, there are only some average ones. ... Read more

Product Description
With a maximum of 24 drivers, 12 teams and 17 races per year, the Grand Prix championship is a small, tightly-controlled world in which sponsors - including track owners, tobacco advertisers and automobile multinationals - battle for maximum exposure. In The Pits, ITV F1 presenter Beverley Turner examines closely the murkier aspects of the sport, including: how venues are chosen (and why they are dropped); the (often) extraordinary power of sponsors and the controversial rule changes that deliver more audience-friendly races. She also explains precisely why, because of the way access to F1 is restricted, no book of this kind has ever been written before. Beverley Turner draws on original interviews throughout the Formula 1 fraternity - from top drivers to mechanics and team bosses - and her own experiences as a broadcast journalist to produce a sensational expose of the world's most high-profile capitalist jamboree. After reading this no-holds-barred description of life in the pits, elite motor racing will never seem the same again. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth a look if you haven't got prejudices
Well obviously this book has upset a few F1 devotees, so, it has fulfilled its promise of being incendiary at least!

I don't know how much revelations some people expected this book to detail, because I guess the underlying purpose of F1 is pretty transparent - race cars around tracks in 15 or so countries every year to generate a handsome profit via tobacco sponsorship et al.

The great thing about this book is that it isn't self-indulgent, just a polemic on the world of F1, lamenting what could be a much better spectacle and display of talent. True, anybody who is privy to the operations of F1 and is aware of how all aspects of it work won't find much, if any, detail of this book a shock.

Regardless of whether you are a seasoned F1 fan or completely ignorant of the sport, I recommend this book due to the rare detailed insider's view of the extraordinary world of formula 1(ie. from a critical viewpoint - if you want all the 'one big happy family' version, try murray walker's biography), which happens to be written in an articulate yet engaging manner.

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid this one
The Amazon.uk site has about 10 reviews of this book, most of them right on. As a fairly knowledgable but not fanatic F1 observer, I hoped to get a few insights to the behind the scenes workings of the teams and perhaps a new appreciation or distaste for what goes on.
That said, nothing in this book is a suprise. It is a quick read, but not worth the 12 pounds I paid for it in the airport.

F1 is a business built around tobacco, objectifies women, is all about glamour and power...and this is news?

I was particularly annoyed with the typical EU observation that U.S. fans have no appreciation for "real" open wheel racing or road courses. Has this author ever heard of the Indy 500? You, know, the race that pre-dates F1 by 40 years and sells out 400,000 seats every year? Of the many paved and dirt sprint car circle-track circuits all over every state in the U.S.? Or Sebring? Daytona? Sheesh.

NASCAR gets a brief mention...and it is clear that the author has never experienced any high-end U.S. racing series. Hardly good research.
In fact, one of her main points in the book - the lack of women in racing - is interesting as she mentions one mediocre open-wheel racer, but no mention of drag racing legend Shirley Muldowney, or Angelle Savoie of current NHRA fame.
(and look at Danica Patrick this year!).
All this said, I fould little of value in this book for either F1 fanatics or even casual fans.

Borrow it if you feel the need.

1-0 out of 5 stars save your money
A friend warned me that he'd heard this book wasn't much good.I wasn't smart enough to listen.Be smarter than me -- save your money. The blurb on the back cover says "The Pits is an incendiary and revelatory behind-the-scenes account of the truth about Formula One".Sounds exciting, doesn't it?Except that it's a bald lie.The author seems to be a rather cute looking Brit television "talking head".She traveled around to the F1 races in 2003, picked up some superficial twaddle, and now presumes to know deep truths about F1.She has a section about each race, but spends about one paragraph on what actually happened in the race. The rest is about her opinion of her hotel's decor, or various smug discourses.Half a dozen pages of her Melbourne section are about some little group of protestors, going into great detail about their objections to the government money spent on changes (they don't like) to Albert Park. Are F1 drivers really atheletes; is F1 really a sport or a business; why aren't there female F1 drivers; and her really long snit about sexism throughout F1.Endless pages about these and other equally deep and socially relevant topics.Nothing at all "indendiary" or "revelatory", unless you didn't know that Bernie and Max run F1.If you're not an F1 fan, why would you even consider this book?If you are a fan, this book is simply worthless. If you're as dumb as me and buy it anyway, you'll be kicking yourself later. ... Created in 1950, the Formula One World Championship is thepinnacle of auto racing. The most popular form of motor sports on Earth, some of itsmarquee teams are known throughout the world, such as Ferrari, McLaren, and Lotus.Formula One’s glamorous outlook and incredible marketing power make onebelieve that it is a fantasy world of expensive machinery and super hero drivers, adazzling array of lines and colors. But if one looks closer into the history of theworld Championship, one will notice another side to Formula one, a side of failure. Itis obvious that not every car can be a Lotus 49 or a Williams FW 14B. And not everyengine can have the impact of a Ford Cosworth DFV or a Honda turbo, in fact very feware, but some stand out as some of Formula One’s most famous failures. Whatare the worst? 4-0 out of 5 stars Formula One Through the Lens
This was a Christmas gift and I found this book to be a good book on the history of Formula 1.Some of the other reviewers made comments about the amount of black and white photos in this book but you have to remember that those were state-of-art.Although color photography has been around for a while, it wasn't until the mid 1960s that the average joe could afford 35 mm color cameras. This book is a good reference book and a welcome addition to my autoracing memorabilia collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Superb but in small quantity back/whiteF-1 photographs.
A great piece for F-1 book collector.Almost all of the N.Snowdon and D.Burnett photos are superb, especially from the 60's and 70's. The text for each photo is very accurate. Some photos are very rare and evensensational. This is a book that really could be the double or even thetriple of the 160 pages with +/- 250 photos. The some confuse layout ofcontents and the lack of some years of the 4 decades are the weak points ofthis fascinating book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of black and white photos
A nicely presented book from the publishers of the excellent yearly Autocourse annual. Lots of pictures to look at covering 4 decades of motorsport photography from Nigel Snowdon and Diana Burnett. However allthe pictures in the book are black and white, which is a bit of a shame. There is a bonus in that there are comments from the photographersregarding particular pictures (where, why, when and how etc..) redeem thissomewhat.A nice addition to the motorsport and formula 1 collection. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive technical review of F1 cars and engines.
I read this book back in 1995. Sal Incandela presents a well-researched account of the technical developments which occured from the 1975 season until about the mid-eighties. The text is written for those with an interest in the engineering aspects of race car development. It is suitable for enthusiasts who do not have any formal engineering or technical education. The information presented is quite detailed, but is not sufficient to actually design a winning F1 race car with ... Read more
