Product Description
Telling the true story of the Asian football experience, this book is by turns humorous, wry, philosophical and impassioned, as it lays bare the cultural and institutional shackles which have historically denied Asians access to the bastion of British football. The book interweaves testimony from footballers such as Jimmy Khan (rejected by Bury and Blackburn, but a debutant for Pakistan in a crucial World Cup qualifier) and Chris Dolby (ex-Bradford City), with the authors' own accounts of growing up in Sikh communities in the West Midlands in the 1970s and 1980s and following Wolverhampton Wanderers and England. It demonstrates that no Asian footballer has yet made the elusive breakthrough into the top flight of the professional game, in spite of the fact that football is a consuming passion for many British Asians. ... Product Description

Jamie Peacock is the ultimate modern forward in rugby league. Taking the hard hits, making the toughest yards, and leading by example in the Super League and international arenas, JP has come through adversity on and off the pitch to become one of the most respected players of his generation. His strength, determination, and unfailing will to win have seen him claim the “Man of Steel” and “International Forward of the Year” awards, along with a host of other individual honors, while picking up Super League titles and Challenge Cups with Bradford and Leeds. This autobiography is a revelatory and inspirational account of a life in professional sport, from starting out as a skinny youth and being told he wouldn't make the grade to dark days in hospital waiting rooms with his career hanging by a thread, all culminating in the euphoria of winning the Grand Final with hometown club Leeds. Forthright and to the point, Jamie pulls no punches in describing rugby league as he sees it. Replete with opinions and anecdotes, this book is essential reading for anyone with an interest in what it takes to become one of sport's true gladiators.

DESCRIPTION:

"I know the play.

The game starts with a whistle and ends with triumph—or defeat. Forty minutes of man against man—blocking the rusher, beating the defense downfield, finding the open receiver, reading the offense, picking off the pass, working as a team, racing against the clock, racing against themselves. For the nine gay men of the L.A. Quake, the season of sweat is about to end with a chance to win the West Los Angeles Flag Football Championship. For some, it's a last hurrah; for others, a taste of gridiron glory they've only dreamed about. The Quake has struggled to compete on the field in a "straight" league and struggled off the field with relationships, success (and its pitfalls), aging, and their own concepts of masculinity. And now, it's first down-and-forever, with time running out—and no way to stop it.

"You? We're going to trust the last play of this game to you?"

Dan Boyle's first novel, Huddle, is the engaging account of a season in the life of the L.A. Quake, a ragtag collection of Hollywood types who drink too much, snort too much, and screw too much as they wage weekend gridiron battles against the likes of the Culver City Centurions, the Crenshaw Cool, the Santa Monica Seahawks, and their bitter rivals from the Gay Flag Football League, the West Hollywood Warriors. There's Bill, past his prime and approaching middle age with a string of professional and personal failures behind him; Ed—looking for love in all the wrong faces; Al—sweet, shy, and innocent, everybody's favorite; Curt—obsessed with anonymous back-alley sex and worried Al, his lover, might be, too; and Jerry—vain and shallow, a perfect fool with a perfect body; Dave, Mitch, Jack, and Marcus. Each navigates the everyday course of being a man. And celebrates the once-a-week joy of being a Quake.

"I will make this catch. I've never been more sure of anything in my life."

Huddle is the inspirational story of competition, camaraderie, and commitment, as gay teammates become a team—on the field and off. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars PAINFUL TO READ
If you are a fan of trite gay fiction going absolutely nowhere, this book is for you.If you are a gay football fan, run from this book at top speed; the author's lack of knowledge of football is only matched by his less than stellar writing skill. If you are a fan of gay fiction; drop this book like it's hot. This book was very, very poorly written, and the author's desire to refer to his main character as 'Our Hero' grates on the nerves.Waste not the money on this; you can no doubt find billions of used copies of people who would rather never see this book again.

5-0 out of 5 stars JOCKS ON OUR TEAM
HUDDLE is more a series of interlocking vignettes than a traditional novel. Each chapter focuses on different members of the L.A. Quake's, a gay squad playing in the Los Angeles Flag Football League. Flag football is serious business to these gay men, and the progression of the playing season accommodates the individual stories. This is most definitely an ensemble piece.

Among the protagonists are Al and Curt, boyfriends living an open relationship. What a surprise for each when they discover that if they're going to fool around, they'd just as soon do it with each other. Also featured are Ed and Bill. These are two guys so afraid of messing up a wonderful four year friendship, that each is afraid to tell the other how he really feels for fear of ruining what they've already established. And then there is, Dave, a sweet kid new to the team and working hard to prove he's got what it takes. Dave is a guy trying to fit into his world, and looking for happiness but having a tough time finding it.

This is a story of gay jocks, living different lives but coming together once a week, bonding with each other playing flag football. They will win some and they will lose some, but they'll do it together.

I really got a kick out of this butch book. Every male character is a card carrying member of the gay letterman's club. These are gay men, confidant in their sexuality and not afraid to show it. They're proud to be an openly gay team and they're not about to take any crap about it. They don't always make the right decisions, on or off the field, but they try. I liked these guys, flaws and all. I think you will too.

2-0 out of 5 stars FOUL PLAY
This book may be for you if you enjoy following chapter upon chapter of gay men playing football. The remainding chapters dive into the lives of the men off the field. It becomes very soapie very quick, and unless you want to follow a man pondering his last relationship while taking in a hike (for about 8 pages), skip this one. ... Read more

Product Description
A four-man flag-football team in need of an Oyster.

Sixteen-year-old Flint McCallister is the captain of a four-man flag-football team called Three Clams and an Oyster. Flint and the other two Clams, Beaterson and Deshutsis, are going to give this season all they’ve got, but, as usual, they’re having Oyster problems. The first Oyster on the team died a couple of years ago. The current one, Cade Savage, is partying too hard and is unreliable. Flint and the Clams are faced with a dilemma: should they stick with their old friend Cade or dump him and go with a new Oyster? And if they dump Cade, who will they get to replace him? Tim Goon, the unknown quantity with the roadkill hairdo? Thor, the nice-guy stoner? Or the girl, Summerfield, who pushes them out of their comfort zone and doesn’t shave her legs?

In searching for an Oyster, Flint and his buddies are forced to reexamine their hallowed traditions and old habits – and to take a hard look at who they are and where they’re going.
Amazon.com Review
High school juniors Flint McCallister, Dwight Deshutis, and Rick Beaterson's four-man flag football team, Three Clams and an Oyster, is short one shellfish. Cade Savage, their fourth, would rather party than practice. The guys know they have to get serious if they really want to go to Nationals, and they're soon scrambling to find a replacement before the September deadline. Should they go with Thor Hupf, who's a great player but a total stoner, or Tim Goon, who, despite his penchant for silk shirts and bad hair, owns a ski cabin that he might invite the Clams to? Their best bet is pretty jock Rachel Summerfield, whose natural talent for flag football almost outweighs the fact that she doesn't shave her legs, and well, she's a girl. Through riotously funny conversations, intense confrontations, and outright arguments, it becomes clear that there's a lot more to this three-way friendship than football. From one momentous Friday to Sunday, McCallister, Deshutis, and Beaterson wrestle with questions of life, death, and loyalty in their pursuit of the one oyster that holds their winning pearl.

Three Clams and an Oyster isn't about football any more than The Old Man and the Sea is about fishing. Instead, Randy Powell uses flag football as the metaphorical glue that holds this incredibly intelligent, subtle story about self-awareness and maturity together. He brilliantly captures that precise moment when adolescence blurs into adulthood, an epiphany that is sometimes a year in the making, or sometimes the product of one unforgettable weekend. (Ages 13 and older) --Jennifer Hubert ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining
Three Clams and an Oyster by Randy Powell is a very simple book, in theory. It tells the story of three friends trying to find a fourth member for their flag football team and takes place over the course of one weekend. What we, the readers, learn over that weekend is the lives, dreams, and history of those boys.Through simple scenes, such as the boys spending an afternoon at Goodwill, the reader feels like a part of their lives. The task of finding a new player forces these boys to analyze themselves and their lives. It forces them to face the past and look towards the future. It's also very humorous.I love the way they talk and ride each other.I would laugh out loud at some parts while I read! It's a quick, smooth, entertaining story that I would definitely recommend to all readers!

Have you ever been on a team and there is that one person who doesn't put in the same effort as everyone else?Someone who is like a weak link in a chain? That's just what happened to teenager Flint McAllister and his teammates on their 4-man flag football team.Even though he was a close friend, Cade Savvage abandoned his team to drink and party. With only 2 days left before the first game of the season, Flint and his friends, Beaterson and Deshutsis, must find a new player to take Cade Savvage's place.
Although it would seem impossible to find a good teammate in such a short amount of time, they have managed to find some interesting candidates. For example, the attractive Rachel Summerfield.Rachel is a great athlete but her bossy attitude could present a problem.Another candidate is a close friend of Deshutsis, whom the other teammates know very little about.
Three Clams and an Oyster is written in a modern day perspective.Flint McAllister narrates the story from his point of view, making the story relatable to young adults. The book also shows a lot of dialogue between the remaining teammates.
I believe that the issue with finding a new teammate in a short amount of time was completely relatable because everyone has been rushed before, whether it be at school or at work. The question the teens must answer is, is skill more important than friendship when time is of the essence.

Flint McCallister is the captain of a four-man flag football team. The weekend before the beginning of the season he finds himself one man short, sort of. Flint, Rick Beaterson, Dwight Deshutsis, and Cade Savage have been friends since first grade. Lately though, they can't seem to count on Cade. He doesn't show up for practice, doesn't call, and spends a lot of time getting drunk and high, things the other boys don't agree with. So now they're in a difficult position. Do they keep hoping their old friend will come around, or do they replace him? If they replace him, who do they get instead?

The Clams try out a few people half-heartedly and with mixed and rather amusing results. Their best prospect is a girl. But are they ready to deal with a girl on their team? Are they ready to deal with the changes that will make between them? Above and beyond all, what do they do about Cade?

A great look at the nature of friendship, this book is more about the interaction between people than about football. It will appeal to girls and boys alike, and for similar reasons, but with different affects. It's interesting for me, as a girl, to get an idea of how teenage boys think. Friendships aren't so different, whether it be groups of boys or groups of girls, and the subtle shift that occurs when the opposite sex appears. The book itself is almost profound in its subtlety. Reading this reminded me of all of the times I've been the only girl in a room full of boys. Eventually they forget you're there, and you get to hear some pretty surprising stuff. And the most surprising part is how similar it is when girls talk with their good friends.

Success, which usually is as fickle as justice, took long strides and doubled its stations in order to reach Amedee. The Cafe de Seville, and the coterie of long-haired writers, were busying themselves with the rising poet already. His suite of sonnets, published in La Guepe, pleased some of the journalists, who reproduced them in portions in well- distributed journals. Ten days after Amedee's meeting with Jocquelet, the latter recited his poem "Before Sebastopol" at a magnificent entertainment given at the Gaite for the benefit of an illustrious actor who had become blind and reduced to poverty. ... I have often been asked to select and epitomize the practical and especially the pedagogical conclusions of my large volumes on Adolescence, published in 1904, in such form that they may be available at a minimum cost to parents, teachers, reading circles, normal schools, and college classes, by whom even the larger volumes have been often used. This, with the cooeperation of the publishers and with the valuable aid of Superintendent C.N. Kendall of Indianapolis, I have tried to do, following in the main the original text, with only such minor changes and additions as were necessary to bring the topics up to date, and adding a new chapter on moral and religions education. For the scientific justification of my educational conclusions I must, of course, refer to the larger volumes. The last chapter is not in "Adolescence," but is revised from a paper printed elsewhere. I am indebted to Dr. Theodore L. Smith of Clark University for verification of all references, proof-reading, and many minor changes.

INTRODUCTION.

Probably the most important years in anyone's life are those eight or ten preceding the twenty-first birthday. During these years _Heredity_, one of the two great developmental factors, bears its crop, and the seeds sown before birth and during childhood come to maturity. During these years also the other great developmental force known as _Environment_ has full play, the still plastic nature is moulded by circumstances, and the influence of these two forces is seen in the manner of individual that results.

This time is generally alluded to under two heads: (1) Puberty, (2) Adolescence.

By Puberty we understand the period when the reproductive organs are developed, the boy or girl ceasing to be the neutral child and acquiring the distinctive characteristics of man or woman. The actual season of puberty varies in different individuals from the eleventh to the sixteenth year, and although the changes during this time are not sudden, they are comparatively rapid.

By Adolescence we understand the time during which the individual is approximating to the adult type, puberty having been already accomplished. Adolescence corresponds to the latter half of the developmental period, and may be prolonged even up to twenty-five years.

An Excerpt from the book-

CHAPTER I.

CHANGES OBSERVABLE DURING PUBERTY AND ADOLESCENCE IN GIRLS.

1. Changes in the Bodily Framework.--During this period the girl's
skeleton not only grows remarkably in size, but is also the subject of
well-marked alterations and development. Among the most evident
changes are those which occur in the shape and inclination of the
pelvis. During the years of childhood the female pelvis has a general
resemblance to that of the male, but with the advent of puberty the
vertical portion of the hip bones becomes expanded and altered in
shape, it becomes more curved, and its inner surface looks less
directly forward and more towards its fellow bone of the other side.
The brim of the pelvis, which in the child is more or less
heart-shaped, becomes a wide oval, and consequently the pelvic girdle
gains considerably in width. The heads of the thigh bones not only
actually, in consequence of growth, but also relatively, in
consequence of change of shape in the pelvis, become more widely
separated from each other than they are in childhood, and hence the
gait and the manner of running alters greatly in the adult woman. At
the same time the angle made by the junction of the spinal column with
the back of the pelvis, known as the sacro-vertebral angle, becomes
better marked, and this also contributes to the development of the
characteristic female type. No doubt the female type of pelvis can be
recognised in childhood, and even before birth, but the differences of
male and female pelves before puberty are so slight that it requires
the eye of an expert to distinguish them. The very remarkable
differences that are found between the adult male and the adult female
pelvis begin to appear with puberty and develop rapidly, so that no
one could mistake the pelvis of a properly developed girl of sixteen
or eighteen years of age for that of a boy. These differences are due
in part to the action of the muscles and ligaments on the growing
bones, in part to the weight of the body from above and the reaction
of the ground from beneath, but they are also largely due to the
growth and development of the internal organs peculiar to the woman.
All these organs exist in the normal infant at birth, but they are
relatively insignificant, and it is not until the great developmental
changes peculiar to puberty occur that they begin to exercise their
influence on the shape of the bones. This is proved by the fact that
in those rare cases in which the internal organs of generation are
absent, or fail to develop, there is a corresponding failure in the
pelvis to alter into the normal adult shape. The muscles of the
growing girl partake in the rapid growth and development of her bony
framework. Sometimes the muscles outgrow the bones, causing a peculiar
lankiness and slackness of figure, and in other girls the growth of
the bones appears to be too rapid for the muscles, to which fact a
certain class of "growing pain" has been attributed.

In preparing the following pages, my aim has been, to produce a book alike entertaining and instructive;--one which, in the reading, should afford an amusement to the mind, pleasant as the spring-blossoms on the tree; and, in its influences on the heart in after life, be like the good fruits that succeed and ripen, to refresh and nourish us, when the vernal season is over and gone, and the voices of the singing-birds are lost in the distance.

It had been more than three months since Maria and Maurice had met again. One day the young man went to the Louvre to see his favorite pictures of the painters of the Eighteenth Century. His attention was attracted by the beautiful hair of a young artist dressed in black, who was copying one of Rosalba's portraits. It was our pretty pastel artist whose wonderful locks disturbed all the daubers in the museum, and which made colorists out of Signol's pupils themselves. Maurice approached the copyist, and then both exclaimed at once: ... Read more
