5-0 out of 5 stars Great for quick reference
"Back in the good old days" the pony club manual was all one book, but this guide still gives easy to understand diagrams and explanations of what everyone riding needs to learn.I think it's great for adults and kids alike.

3-0 out of 5 stars Basics for Beginners--Old news
This is a basic primer for beginners and children, but it is reminiscent of books I read thirty years ago.The sketches are good and the explanations clear.I wanted more detailed information. You can find this info along with a lot more basic information from other books.I felt it was drasticly overpriced, unless funds go to some charity as a fund raiser. I expected more than this book delivered for the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars What horse people really need to know!
This is where to find the information on horses that you really need but no one ever properly explains. This book puts it more clearly than any other source. When you take lessons or go to shows, you hear about conformation, movement and soundness, but you really need a primer like this to understand what people are talking about. After you read this book, you could converse with a judge like an expert.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for Pony Club kids
With my daughter being in Pony Club and me being joint DC for our club this book is recomended reading for our members.I can see why it is very helpful and an easy read.So people that don't know much about conformation will be able to get it. I give this book 5 stars as well as her other books. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read
Shorter book than I imagined. Would have liked it to have included more diagrams and photos but the content was easy to read and useful. Good section on bandaging.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
This book is very helpful in studying a horses feet and legs.I'm taking a vet class and found the information in this book very helpful.

2-0 out of 5 stars Wholly inadequate
I am really startled that 9 out of 12 people gave this book a 5-star rating. It reads much more like a pamphlet than a book and, if I had to guess, I'd say the author wrote it in a couple of afternoons off the top of her head.Lameness in horses is a huge topic and it deserves substantial consideration, not a mishmash of whatever happened to pop into a vet's head at the time she was at the typewriter.

I would instead recommend "Lameness: Recognizing and Treating the Horse's Most Common Ailment," which I purchased immediately after realizing that the Howell book was so lacking. It's a few bucks more and has about 10 times the information.

5-0 out of 5 stars A little Help when the worst happens

A great little book with easy to understand explinations. Simple clear pictures. Great reading for any one with an tendon / ligament injured horse. There are repairable with time.

Product Description
United States Army Olympic equestrian competitions have been largely overlooked in historical writings. This book tells the stories of the triumphs, the contributions, and the failures of the U.S. Army Olympians, and also captures the humor and good times as well as the drama and disappointments of the U.S. Army Olympians from the 1912 Games in Stockholm, to the 1948 Games in London. The stories are rich in detail, and include the controversial 1936 Summer Games held in Berlin, Germany. Many personal vignettes as told by team members enhance the story. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The best source available on this important equestrian history
This is the best and only source available on the Army Equestrian Teams. There is a paucity of sources on the earlier years, probably due to the principals having died prematurely in WWI or WWII.The book hints at, but does not give a complete discussion about the change-over from military to civilian teams. This change-over involved several competing missions that changed, the Army mission, the US Equestrian Team mission, and the whole Olympic amateur versus professional contretemps. The latter was handled differently in different sports over many years before coming to today's resolution.

The biggest story was the hinted at political/military/espionage story of having the Army team in GERMANY for two months in 1936.I guess someone else will have to write that book. And please let me know when you do!

Thompson has filled the book with history of the various teams and how they were formed. There are many photos. However, as indicated above, some of this history has been lost due to the stories and photos not being captured and archived at the time. The lost part did not make it to this history, but you can see where some individuals don't get much coverage probably due to a lack of information, not any fault of the author. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect guide for the novice
While researching the sport of cutting for my book 'Loving Larry' I read everything I could to capture the essence of the sport.Sally Harrison's guide for the non-pro competitor was my favorite reference.I love the personal stories and photos of the old-time Quarter Horses that were the foundation producers of modern day cutting horses.I appreciate Sally's understanding and careful explanation of the history, terminology and basic rules of cutting. After reading cover-to-cover with awe and fascination and referring back repeatedly for basics, I found this book to be a perfect guide for the novice that I was.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great history, not great training
I really enjoyed her chapters on how the cutting horse came about. They were informative and fun to read. She also does a good job going over the basic rules for non-pro cutting events.I was hoping for more training tips and was disapointed. She hardly even touches on the subject of training your horse to cut.

This book is primarily for someone who is willing to spend lots of $$$$ on a horse and trainer to compete. If this is not you, I suggest trying to get it from a library.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good overview of the cutting horse world
Sally Harrison's book is an excellent overview of the horses, people, and events that make cutting such an intriguing sport. She includes fascinating insights into the lives and histories of some of the immortal horses of the sport, from Poco Bueno to "Little Peppy" (Peppy San Badger), with commentary on what made them so great. The section on Doc Bar and the "two fools," as well as the description of the day Poco Bueno inspired Pine Johnson to adopt the not-quite-classic habit all cutting riders now favour, are in themselves worth the price of the book.

Harrison includes plenty of people in her story as well, from classic trainers like Buster Welch, Pine Johnson and Leon Harrel, to avid non-pros. All of these people give anecdotal explanations of why the sport and the horses have such a hold on them. Letting people like this tell their stories makes for entertaining and often rather moving reading.

There's one odd, and rather amusing, aspect of this book -- when I tried to look up Leon Harrel in the index I couldn't find him. Then I realized that none of the humans quoted or described in the book are listed in the index. You can look up every passing reference to Smart Date or Doc O Lena, but Harrison appears to have left the people out of the index entirely. That alone tells you all you need to know about Harrison's love for horses and cutting.

My only complaint is that I wanted more and yet more details. This book could have been twice as long and I would still have read it in a sitting. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information for beginners
For both horse and rider, longeing and ground training are some of the most important aspects of horsemanship. What the horse learns on the ground translates into its movement under saddle. And the rider who can control his or her horse on the ground, fares better mounted than one who cannot. Combined with the recommendations of the USPC (US Pony Clubs), this book makes a valuable addition to the novice rider looking to learn how to ground train and longe.

As someone already familiar with ground training, since that's mostly all I do with my mare, I didn't find any new information in this book. What I did find was clear, easy to understand, instructions on how towork the horse from the ground. Many of the instructions are prefaced with the admonition to find an experienced horse person to help, and it's believed that within the levels system of the USPC, that a lower leveled rider would find someone of higher levels to help. Information on wearing safety gear for both the horse and rider was welcome. And some of the ground training information, such as dealing with the pushy horse, have been echoed by other popular trainers.

With that said, I wouldn't totally dismiss this volume out of hand for an intermediate level person. However, what I'd purchased it for - to learn more ground training exercises for my mare - wasn't what this book was about. And I would have to say, that if I'd known the volume's beginner nature, I wouldn't have purchased it. There is some good information here. But if you're familiar with longeing, then be prepared to sit through some elementary stuff to get to the tidbits of information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Horse Lover
This book gives good incite to the person who is trying to partner with their horse.Trying to find your way when everyone has an opinion is hard. This approach is a balanced approach, good for you and the horse.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great 'undersaddle' training hints.
I did thoroughly enjoy this book.I have done and read a significant amount of natural training methods so some of the ground work stuff was fairly elementary and sometimes not as 'natural' as I would like - found it to be a little incongruent with the 'positive' and 'saying yes' part of the title.

None-the-less the under saddle trainingsuggestions - especially teaching the half halt and circle work - were invaluable and made this book a worthwhile purchase.Like any book I its important to take away what is useful to you and not be too critical of the remainder which may work very well for others.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Top Two Books To Own
What a great book! With so many books available on natural horsemanship, horse behavior and training it's easy to accummulate a whole equestrian library rather quickly. There are really only two books you can't go without though:
Gincy Bucklin's What Your Horse Wants You to Know and Sarah Blanchard's The Power of Positive Horse Training.
Not only are both books full of great suggestions but more importantly they help bridge the language barrier between horse and human. Wonderful books to own, easy and interesting to read and great reference tools and morale builders when you and your equine partner hit a road block. ... Read more

For decades. It works. Leave us alone." Maggie doesn't. She figures if one rancher acknowledges her compassionate training ideas, the others will follow. Resentment against her efforts intensifies. The ranchers' hostility erupts. She's threatened and told to get out or else! Maggie stays and, undaunted, launches a new, exceptionally unique program. She's determined to change the ranchers' minds. Even if it means jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire!

In OUTNUMBERED, we're in the saddle for a thrilling, singular ride with believable, memorable characters, endearing animals, and an impressive, masterly developed plot of scheming intrigue unraveling at a galloping pace to finish with a stunning, dramatic conclusion! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book with a great theme
Having owned horses, I loved this book, which had a theme to never underestimate the sensitivity and intelligence of these animals, and that so much more in training can be accomplished if one just takes his/her cue from the horse's behavior and "body language" so to speak.Great book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming story!
"Outnumbered" is a wonderful book, a heartwarming story about what a horse is all about, with specific training guidelines and the story of one horse in particular, named Intrepid.Horse knowledge in itself makes this volume valuable--I learned more than I ever knew I didn't know!I also liked the down-to-earth characters, real-life situations, and just how real and genuine it felt.If you like horses, don't miss this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars horse lover
I am a horse lover and really enjoyed this book. It was very captivating and engaging. I really liked Norma's new "compassion" method for training horses. It is is completely different than the
old way of thinking. A very good read.

Product Description
Never look a Gift Horse in the mouth. Carson Reynolds would dispute that statement. A gift horse got him into this mess in the first place. His mission: transform a run-down horse farm into the premium facility in the Pacific Northwest and a disorganized horse trainer with a penchant for self-sabotage into a winner. After six years, Samantha MacIntyre has returned to the scene of a horrific barn fire allegedly caused by her carelessness. She accepts the head trainer position at that run-down facility to prove her innocence and to ride the talented, temperamental horse Carson received as a birthday gift. But first, she must pass the test: compete the horse for one season, impress Carson, and best his sister's preferred trainer. As Sam and Carson get closer to the truth and mishaps escalate into serious accidents, and with the help of an opinionated equine, they face a surprising reality--that love is more important than ambition, money, orblue ribbons. ** Note: Some parts written in the horse's point of view. ** A Bookstrand Mainstream Romance ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not even a beach read.
I've been enjoying reading authors who, like me, grew up with dog-eared copies of The Black Stallion and every other horse book available. Carolyn Banks and her hysterical mysteries, and Sara Gruen with her vivid and believable tales. So I decided to try this one and am glad it was cheap. First, the story takes place outside of Seattle in an area called 'The Eastside' by people who live here (as the main characters supposedly do). It's fairly obvious to me that the author has, at best, been to the Seattle area to ride the Ducks, but she is so lacking in knowledge about the area that it's painful to read. For example, Sam's family lives in Spokane; she lives in Western Washington and the family reunion is on the peninsula...that's a LONG drive for a family reunion. It would be a lot more believable if the family met at Chelan or even in Idaho. Someone familiar with the area would know that. The book lacks any real description of the setting other than those things everyone around the country knows--the Space Needle and Mt Rainier. Other than that, she may as well be writing about Oklahoma for how generalized she is.

Her character development is mainly to build up to sex scenes. Ass is a common adjective she uses. Tight ass, sweet ass, you get the idea. The horse action seems to just be there to fill out the panting love scenes--which are the best written parts of the book.

I think the author should focus on writing short sexy stories for racy magazines and leave the novels to the professionals. If you want a good story and good writing, check out the authors I mentioned. You won't be disappointed, unless you just want a Harlequin-quality read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved the heroine, the hero, and especially Gabbie
What a great story. Ms. Davenport creates two very diverse characters and vividly shows how each influences the other as their relationship grows. The descriptions make me feel like I'm there. Add in the high stakes for both Samantha and Carson, and wow! I couldn't put it down.

One last note: I fell so in love with Gabbie. What a wonderfully, quirky character and my hat is off to Ms. Davenport for giving her a voice.

Thanks for a great read!

5-0 out of 5 stars great read!
Just started reading it, so far it is a great book. Charles does amazing things with horses and i've learned alot with his books and seeing his clinics at different expos.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully written!
Charles Wilhelm's book, Building your Dream Horse, is well-written, easy to understand, and inspiring.Anyone with a little horse-sense can use what he has to offer to help train their horse.I have recommended it to several people who are delighted with the results they have acheived by following the advice offered here.It seems to be especially helpful to the novice horseman, but even a old cowhand could learn something from this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful, but not "Ultimate."

I was looking for a step-by-step method for training a young horse, and this isn't it.Mr. Wilhelm describes his round pen or leadline methods for starting and stopping the horse's feet, and then suddenly we are in the saddle teaching the horse to give to the bit, with no explanation of how we got up there!
My dream horse might automatically understand about carrying a saddle and having a rider on board without being systematically taught about those things, but I sure don't want to count on it.
There's a lot of useful information in this book, I'm not going to toss it out, but I'll need to look elsewhere for a system of foundation training.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Gift
I got this book as a gift for my mom, and she loves it. It really fits the "going back to horses" frame of mind, as Charles Wilhelm stated in the introduction. She has had horses her whole life, but hasn't been very involved the past 10-15 years, and Charles Wilhelm seems to understand that, and is helping her to work her way back in comfortably. Great easy read that teaches you a lot!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book - would highly recommend!
Thank you so much for writing such a great book!I found it to be very easy to read and easy to follow when applying your techniques from the book to my everyday handling of my horses.Mr. Wilhelm really knows how to convey his training methods through his words and make it easy to understand.Thank you so much Mr. Wilhelm for your book.I hope to someday make it to one of the horse expositions you go to! ...
