4-0 out of 5 stars Best Cycling Training Book
If you are looking to become pro (or just a really dedicated amateur) this is the book for you. It has information on subjects I never knew even applied to cycling and gets into a good amount of detail. If you are just looking for bits of information to improve your cycling and don't really want to make it a center of your life then you should look elsewhere as this gets quite a bit deeper than something to help you lose a couple of pounds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening
After spending ~18 months training on road cycling based on my past experience as a basketball athlete, I decided that I needed something more specific. This one (recommended by experienced cyclists) was really enlightening. I read it all (front to back) twice and I now use it on weekly basis to specify details of my training schedule. Really useful, it will continue being a reference for a long time!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a Bible at all, very specialized
I expected a training book to get me from a beginner to a good cyclist. This book is to take you from a good cyclist to a racer. This should have racing in the title. The book is useless for beginners who just want to complete a century while working and having a family, in other words real people.

4-0 out of 5 stars Complicated But Workable
I read this book twice and nearly gave up on it several times. I repeatedly found the complexity as befuddling as I did amusing. Not only is the program complicated, so is the book.

But I still recommend it.

In order to create a program, I sat down in earnest with a stack of post-its. For everyone's benefit, these are the pages that you need to mark:

pp 47-49
pp 144-147
pp 300-307

Forget the templates. Just create your own Excel sheet for the training diary. I decided not to follow his strength training guideline (more complexity, too much upper body).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference
This book gives additional background on how to train and peak for races. It gives more detail than "Training and Racing with a Power Meter".It has stretching and weight training sections as well.If you race, this is much cheaper than paying $200/month for a coach. ... Read more

Product Description
The book provides 71 on-road trip descriptions (totaling 85 rides) in Los Angeles County. Rides vary from those for short-length family trips on separated bike paths, many longer exploratory and workout trips for more experienced riders on various quality bike routes, and a few "gut-buster" tours for the most physically fit and motivated bikers. Over 1100 one-way miles of biking are described: along harbors, beaches, rivers and lakes, in parks, valleys, and canyons. Included are a coastal century (up and back) from the City of Santa Monica to Port Hueneme in Ventura County and a tour of Avalon on Santa Catalina Island.
A master map shows ride locations within the county and a master matrix identifies ride location, level of difficulty, route composition (percentage on bike trail, signed bike lanes or open roadway) and a general trip characterization (i.e., trip is scenic; in a natural setting; there are attractions along the way.) Each trip description contains a detailed trip map and elevation-distance profile (if necessary) and scenic or character-interest photographs are scattered throughout the book. The route maps note the location of water, landmarks, campsites, and other points of interest. ... Read more

Product Description
It used to be said that a cycling specialist cannot win an Ironman - until Normann Stadler proved otherwise in the 2004 Hawaii Ironman. But even if winning an Ironman is not your primary goal, cycling remains a crucial part in every triathlon. This book was designed to meet the special demands of a triathlete in order to integrate the cycling in his overall training. Efficient training demands a clear insight in the right set-up of the training within a general triathlon training plan, the right training intensity, and the constant interplay of effort and relaxation. "Cycling for Triathletes" sheds light on the most important aspects of cycling training for triathletes, especially from a practical point of view. Paul Van Den Bosch deals with all training components of cycling training in a sound and, yet very understandable way. All the aspects of a triathlete's cycling training, like training forms, training with the heart rate monitor, or cycling technique, are fully illustrated with examples of training schedules. Every triathlete can adapt these schedules to his own needs.Questions about overtraining are also answered, and special attention is given to the nutrition of the cyclist. Also dealt with are, of course, the transitions before and after cycling, as well as the best training for climbing, strength training on the bike, non-drafting races and races where drafting is allowed. It is the latest title in the official "Ironman" books. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost Excellent - But not much to do with Bicycling
I am a cyclist. Not a serious cyclist, but a road cyclist nonetheless, and I can certainly understand how some cyclists may feel misled by the title. Yeah, he rides around on his bike a lot but his bicycling serves as a backdrop for the story and not a centerpiece and especially since the photo on the cover shows a silhouette of a person with a bike on his shoulder, one may think bicycling is more prominent and intrinsic to the story. It is not.

It is very well written. Not great, but the author has potential to be great. It is a slow read. At least for me. And the arc of the story is not great. More of a character study than a story. He does "cycle" through women. I think by the end of page 80 or so he has bedded more women than I have in my life. (which is not saying much) As said by a negative review above "Cycling through women?". Indeed.

This story contains some similarities to Michael Magnuson's "Heft On Wheels", depressed, university lecturer/teacher, sometime author, underachiever-type, many events pertaining to life in the faculty. I sometimes wondered whose book came out first and if the second author used the first as a template. Garrett's writing is far superior but much more depressing.

I would like to comment a bit about the story and you may avert your eyes if you don't want it spoiled: His family is killed in an accident while he is a child, as a teenager he is in love with a girl and while making out at lovers lane, she is apprehended and raped and murdered. He is plagued by the vision of the assailants vehicle in his dreams. My thought is that he victimizes/damages women's psyches in a fashion after the way his psyche has been damaged. The black car of his nightmares is him at the wheel perpetuating the "cycle" of the damage that has been wrought on him.

2-0 out of 5 stars Misleading Title
Perhaps a better title for this book would have been "Poor Choices". I found this book to be about someone who was quite depressed about life and went from one bad choice to another. There was very little about cycling in the book and the little that was led me to believe that the author doesn't know very much about cycling.I kept hoping that the character in the book was going to run into a true cyclist who was going to teach him about the sport(how to ride, how to dress, etc.) This however was not the case.Based purely on this book, I will not read another Greg Garrett novel.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cycling - what through women
After reading the first 56 pages of this book, I'm done.
It hasextremely little to do with Bicycling, rather it's more about an aimless man who is having sex with multiple women and the book is mostly about how he cycles through them. I think that's why the title "cycling"

If youre looking for a book about cycling try The Race. It's worth reading again and again

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book
Garrett has an eye and an ear for authentic Texas. The story is told with great depth by a flawed but charming narrator, a man who unflinchingly shows us his heart, even when he doesn't understand its longings himself.A really wonderful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cycling's a joyride.
Cycling stands as an inventive -- at times gripping -- ride, and is one of the few books that this reviewer has ever devoured in a single sitting.

Garrett's brand of literary realism offers crisp details -- the barking dogs lurching at a blur of bicycle spokes, the Mexican Coca Colas Hector Portillo sells in his midtown store, the levity and gravity found amidst friends wrangling 900 pounds of dry-weight concrete, and a defunct East Waco soul food café called Martha's -- through all this he allows his characters to find their skin within his photorealistic microcosm.

Throughout the narrative, the shifting weather patterns (important for any cyclist) punctuate the story's trajectory. Overheard songs conspire to comment on the character's emotions and actions like a transistored Greek chorus. The characters that interact with Cannon are birthed from a rich intersection of genteel Southern life, Western American culture, and a Baptist/Christian subculture that is so much a part of Waco. Even "bit characters" are presented in such a way that you believe each one has their own novel waiting to be excavated.

In the end, Cycling conveys an unmistakable (yet complex) grace, much like the final scenes Garrett's first novel, Free Bird. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Impressed!
Compared to other carb cycling diet type books, I did not find this one impressive. It seemed dated. Not many interesting recipes. I feel you can do better with other books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Different than the Rest
This book is so much better than other diet books! I think this is because the author gears it towards helping the reader/dieter understand the real reasons behind why we gain weight and lose energy as we get older. As a middle-aged woman, I immediately saw the sense in everything Dr. Malkov explained, and have begun to implement it. Also, he is a very clear writer: in a very few pages he explains the reasons why I'm always gaining back the weight I work so hard to lose. He also does a great job of explaining the connections between refined carbs and weight gain. He gives information I haven't read anywhere before about how the muscles are affected by Atkins' style diets, and why the carb cycle method is more friendly to the body, and will not age the body like the low-carb diets do.I really recommend this book to anyone who is trying to diet and stay healthy at the same time. It's a great source of knowledge and motivation to live a more healthy lifestyle, and it gives a lot of practical advice about how to stay healthy, once you reach your goals. I'm extremely glad I read it and recommend it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy reading and practical
In this book Dr. Malkov explain us in an easy way what we should do to have a healthier life by the process called "carb cycling diet". He explains it based in two principles: the anabolism, the process by which your body builds mascle, and catabolism, the process of burning fat. Different foods function for different purposes in your body, and controlling the food intake with knowledge of these two principles makes it easier for everyone who wishes to lose weith without giving up their favorite foods. He also gives many recipes for foods and easy hints for doing exercises even when you're completely out of time to do so. I recommend this book to everyone who would like to lose weigth and have a healthier life exploiting the foods in the best way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Suddenly, it all makes sense!
I bought this book a few months ago and it has been a tremendous help. I really do have more energy (no more 3pm caffeine/sugar cravings!) and look and feel better. Finally, I have learned the best way to consume carbs. Over the summer I have gained new, lean muscle and dropped fat. Everyone says I look great - people have really noticed. I also found the program very easy to follow and simple to understand. I read another user review that said it was complicated. It's not. Even my mother (who has never followed a diet in her life!) has been able to figure it out and she is also looking and feeling much better. It's perfect for people who are new to dieting (like my mom!)or just need to get better results after years of dieting and exercising (like me!)Great Book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great diet!!
This diet is an amazing blend of science and practical advice. I lost fat in areas where it was hanging all my life. None of the diets I tried before were able to do this for me. I tried WW, Atkins, South Beach, Body for Life but fat on my thighs never went away until I started this diet. And the amazing part is that I am eating sweets( I have a big sweet tooth!). The recipes with whey protein are quite interesting. They don't taste great but they are okay for carb restricted days. I do not feel hungry for a long time after eating them. I feel healthier and happier with my body. This diet is my light at the end of the tunnel. Many Thanks to Dr. Malkov !!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic Oldies
If you are looking for a book that will tell you something about cyclings best than this book will do the job. The format is easy reading, comprised of short biographies of the biggest names cycling has ever produced. If like many cycling enthusiastsyour memory is limited to recent years, to say maybe the seventies or eighties on, than this book will teach you a litttle history too. It didn't all begin with Armstrong, Indurain , Lemond, Hinualt or Merckx, no, these are the giants of recent memeory; before them there were legends like Jacques Anquetil and Louison Bobet. This book goes way back to the gearless bikes and leather helmet days;it is a visually stunning bit of history. Curiously there are some ommissions that I can't quite understand. Belgian winner Lucien Buysse epic ride in 1926 of 3,570 miles that tookweeks to complete is not mentioned; it seems like he should have been in the history section as it was the longest and probably most sadistic Tour de France ever completed. Stuart O'Grady and Robbie McEwen are MIA. Since cycling is in essence a team sport their is no mention of that fact and the contributions of those riders who elevated those to the level of "The Giants." It seems as though there could have been a special section honoring the George Hincapie's of the world. These monor criticisms aside this is a fine historical document with vintage , amazing photographs. Recommended for the cycling fan, especially if they are history buffs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine overview of bike racing glory
Like all true sports fans, bike racing buffs compare today's champs to those from yesteryear as if they were all out there hammering together. This is a good thing. The photos and stories in this book show a diversity which doesn't fragment but instead links together these heroes down thru 100 years of bike racing. Any reader will enjoy becoming familiar with every rider here. I don't know of a better overview of the legends and spirit of the sport in print today.

But! Because each rider is given one spread, the bio's are necessarily ultra-compact. You may well be left wanting more, but the format is still nice.

And! The photos are compelling---how could they not be?---but they aren't the best images of these riders. True, there's no point in reprinting photos that enthusiasts have already seen. Still, the shot of Jeannie Longo and a rival after a race with all eyes closed is an example of the photo weakness.

I commend VeloPress for raising the bar in bike book publishing. They have given bike books the quality that sailing and trout fishing used to claim. Check out their portfolio set of large loose photos of vintage bike racing, all suitable for framing. Classy! ... Read more

Product Description

In 1887 a twenty-one-year-old newspaperman named George Nellis (1865–1948) rode a bicycle from Herkimer, New York, to San Francisco in seventy-two days, surpassing the transcontinental bicycle record by several weeks. He averaged fifty miles a day pedalling a fifty-two-inch, high-wheeled Columbia Expert "ordinary" bicycle with a tubular steel frame and hard rubber tires, and he lost twenty-three pounds in the process.

He bicycled ever westward through sleepy villages, farmlands, and growing cities of the rapidly changing nation and trekked across uninhabited stretches of prairies and mountains that marked its shrinking frontier. Following his daily ten-hour rides, Nellis sat down and wrote letters about his adventures to his hometown newspapers and a national cycling magazine to finance his cross-country journey.

Nellis's epic journey over dirt paths, muddy roads, and occasional railroad ties was plagued by terrible weather, frightening experiences, and odd encounters; yet it was also enriched by breathtaking natural wonders and the generous spirit of many people he met. He nearly drowned in a flash flood, was chased by a furious bull, killed a coyote that accosted him one night, fell victim to mirages in Utah's Great Salt Desert, narrowly missed a tremendous fire that wiped out half of a California town only hours after he had left, and witnessed a horrifying accident on a train track. Nellis also managed to meet the legendary baseball player A. G. Spalding in Chicago, take in professional baseball games in Detroit and Chicago, participate in several bicycle races in Omaha, attend an opera in Cheyenne, Wyoming, enjoy a circus, and eat over two dozen bananas in one sitting in Osceola, Indiana.

Drawing on Nellis's letters and media coverage of the trip, Kevin J. Hayes recreates in compelling detail this amazing trip and the many ordinary and extraordinary faces of late-nineteenth-century America that were once revealed to a young bicyclist.

Product Description
Cycling is a key everyday mode of mobility in the developing world and parts of northern Europe, and one which is increasingly being promoted by governments of car-dominated societies such as the UK. Yet whilst the complex and hugely valued practice of cycling addresses important issues in social theory including sustainability, healthy lifestyles and urban quality-of-life, it has been remarkably unexplored by social scientists. This book redresses this gap by bringing together an interdisciplinary team of academics with a strong interest in research into cycling. In doing so, it provides an overview of the significance of cycling to contemporary social and political debates and of the diversity of state-of-art approaches to cycling research. The book is divided into main sections: the technology of the bicycle; everyday uses of the bicycle; the cultures of bicycle users; and the spatial dynamics of bicycle use. It throws light on a range of contemporary debates while also substantially extending the scope of cycling studies. ... Read more

Product Description

Nutrient Cycling in Terrestrial Ecosystems presents a comprehensive overview of nutrient cycling processes and their importance for plant growth and ecosystem sustainability. The first part of the book presents the fundamentals of nutrient cycling. Topics included are cycling of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulphur and micronutrients. Particular attention is paid to the role of root exudates and rhizosphere microorganisms in facilitating nutrient cycling. The second part discusses nutrient cycling at an ecosystem scale, covering cropping systems, pastures, natural grasslands, arid lands, tundras and forests. The final chapter reviews current models of nutrient cycling.

By comprehensively covering nutrient cycling at a range of scales and emphasising multidisciplinary approaches, this volume will support scientists and practitioners alike, providing links between those involved in improving sustainable economic output from managed ecosystems and those interested in conservation of natural ecosystems.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for introduction to cycling...
This book is written for the "layman" in regards to the physiology behind the sport of cycling. As someone not familiar with VO2 max or heart rate training or even different methods of training, this book is perfect.

As someone with an Exercise Physiology background, however, this book was nothing more than a reveiw of everything I have learned.I was looking for something more physiologically based.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference!
I will be reading this book several times. It's packed with information on how to maximize your training session, off-season training advice, nutitional info, how to cope with jet lag, ad infinitum. I recommend this book to all who take this sport seriously.

4-0 out of 5 stars The scene behind cycling
I read Serios Cycling from Ed Burke and realized that there is more to cycling than mere racing. Being a "new" cyclist at the age of 43 I had great difficulty to match the "older" cyclists that havebeen cycling competatively for the last 25 years. This book helped me tosee what is all the preparation work behind the scenes. Mere fitness is notenough. You tend to hit the wall during training rides and feel confusedbecause you are still not there. The understanding of how muscles work andwhat they need to continue performing at extreme levels of endurance mademe to adapt my diet and pre-race preparation to ensure maximum energy, nutrition and oxygen are available to the working muscles to perform attheir best. It was a complete mind change but today, less than three monthssince I bought this book fellow cyclist are questioning if I use steriods. They could not believe the improvement! The book is well laid out toexplain the basic as well as the advanced detail of the body and mind andhow to overcome those stages where you seem not to progress at all. If youare serious about cycling, get this book. You'll see what I mean! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars some good ideas
i like this book, and am using it to try to make a little more money on two wheels.some good ideas, now a bit dated.needs to be updated with some added sections regarding the benefits of the internet.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you've ever contemplated a bike delivery business...
...then this is the book for you. It's really helpful that his background is actually building various trailers and cargo bikes. Particularly I that he goes through all the different types of businesses - what their problems and opportunities entail - as he has tried to start many of them. Grocery delivery or fast food delivery often come to mind with bike delivery - but there are challenges to starting these kinds of businesses that most people don't think of-challenges that he outlines in the book, as well as legalities around hiring messengers, how to find good help etc.

1-0 out of 5 stars Yawn....
I thought I'd pick up with book to do a little research for starting my own bicycle messanger company.Turns out, this was NOT the book for that. This is a book for someone who enjoys riding their bike and likes to wear rose colored glasses.I would not recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cycling for Profit review
The delivery of small packages by bicycle - the courier or messenger business - has a continuous history as old as the bicycle itself. In the twentieth century the role played by bicycles in delivering larger cargoeshas been eroded by motor vehicles. As motor traffic finally limits its ownspeed in the city to that of the machines it replaced, the specialistload-carrying bicycle has made a comeback.

This book is the first how-tomanual to emerge from the contemporary 'workbike' phenomenon. There aresome pamphlets aimed at prospective bicycle delivery operators published byDetour, but this is an attempt to produce a more comprehensivereference.

The author of this book runs a bicycle delivery firm in Iowa,USA. Consequently, much of the advice is US-centric, such as details of taxlaw and insurance. However, the advice is still useful to people outsidethe USA because it gives the reader an idea of the kind of things theyshould be considering before starting in business.

The author covers theobvious areas such as selection of equipment and marketing your prospectiveservice, but also offers the benefit of his experience on keeping abusiness viable and the recruitment and retention of staff, two areas wheremost workbike business failures occur.

A large proportion of the book isdedicated to real-life examples of workbikes in use that have provedsuccessful. It begins with the kind of jobs that you can do without muchspecial equipment, such as inner-city pizza, airline ticket andpharmaceutical deliveries, where speed - and therefore the lack of need tofind a place to park a motor vehicle - are critical.

The book goes on todetail the ins and outs of grocery, printed matter and furniture delivery.Recyclable material collection is well covered, and mobile bike repair, lawn mowing and window cleaning get a mention too. Ice cream vending, thattraditional British use for a workbike, is mentioned in passing - theCanadian operator interviewed for the book has a fleet of twelve hundredtrikes.

Pedicabs - bicycle taxis - are covered, including the criticalinformation about local laws that often forbid their use, or make themunviable. There is a view, concurrent with the idea of 'motor vehicle asliberation', that the workbike is backward and a form of exploitation, andmust therefore be eliminated. Unfortunately, this aspect of anti-bikelegislation is something we've recently exported globally, threatening theliteral survival of thousands of becak operators in Indonesia alone. It'sespecially ironic that pedicabs are now seen every night in London, just asthe authorities are clamping down on them in Jakarta.

The author admitsto his interest as a manufacturer of trailers in the trike or quad bikeversus trailer controversy. Three or four wheel bike advocates point to thegreater stability and braking performance of their vehicles, while trailerfans boast how they can quickly detach the extra wheels when a smalldelivery is called for. It's a debate which is unlikely to beresolved.

The book contains a few typos, but as the only book of its'kind so far, it is required reading for anyone interested in the subject. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for serious tourers
This book provides excellent information about every major paved road inHawaii, including elevation profiles. I found it invaluable in planning mytours of the islands. I wish every state had books that covered them thiswell. The only (minor) shortcoming was that the listing of inexpensivemotels/B&Bs was incomplete, a gap which was easily filled by any of thegeneral tourist books on Hawaii, such as the Lonely Planet guide. ...
