Chapters: Behind the Scenes at the Museum, Human Croquet, Case Histories, Emotionally Weird. Source: Wikipedia. Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Behind the Scenes at the Museum is the first novel of Kate Atkinson. The book covers the experiences of Ruby Lennox from a middle-class English family. By interspersing flashbacks with the narrative of Ruby's own life, the book chronicles the lives of four generations of women from Ruby's great-grandmother Alice to Ruby's mother's failed dreams. The story of Ruby's own life is told in thirteen chapters, all written in the first person, documenting key periods in Ruby's life from 1951 ("Conception" beginning with the words "I exist!") to 1992. In between each chapter are (non-consecutive) flashbacks that tell the story from the point of view of one of the other (mostly female) members of Ruby's familyincluding her great-grandmother Alice, her grandmother Nell and her mother Bunty. Ruby's family tree Common themes in the book include the untimely death of children, the effect of the two World Wars on the family, the ultimate fate of characters who "disappeared" from their families life never to be heard of again, and how the women of the family feel compelled to enter into marriages in which they become unhappy. The fate of Ruby's family is revealed gradually through the book. A number of revelations, such as the fact that Ruby's sister Gillian dies in a road accident aged 11, are revealed to the reader long before they actually happen. However, other revelations relating the fate of various characters are withheld and revealed gradually throughout the novel, including: It won the 1995, Whitbread Book of the Year, beating The Moor's Last Sigh by Salman Rushdie and a biography of William Ewart Gladstone b...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=4966834 ... Product Description
Ever need a fact or quotation on croquet? Designed for speechwriters, journalists, writers, researchers, students, professors, teachers, historians, academics, scrapbookers, trivia buffs and word lovers, this is the largest book ever created for this single word. It represents a compilation from a variety of sources with a linguistic emphasis on anything relating to the term "croquet," including non-conventional usage and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities. The entries cover all parts of speech (noun, verb, adverb or adjective usage) as well as use in modern slang, pop culture, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in many unexpected examples for croquet, since the editorial decision to include or exclude terms is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. Proceeds from this book are used to expand the content and coverage of Webster's Online Dictionary (www.websters-online-dictionary.org). ... Read more

Excerpt: Robert Fulford (born 1969) is a leading English croquet player who has dominated the sport since the turn of the 1990s. Born in Colchester, England, he started to play croquet at his local school at the age of 15. Fulford has a light attitude towards the game, often travelling from cheap hotel or homes of local croquet players to the next because he only makes about £8000 a year from the sport. One tournament yielded him a lawnmower. He is an alumnus of the University of Durham, where amongst some of his friends he had the nickname 'fluffy' He supplements his sporting career by working for a stone merchants in Thurrock in Essex. Robert has become a CPA and it is not clear what effect, if any, this will have upon his sporting pursuits. Robert also coaches croquet, particularly in Australia and the Chattooga Club in North Carolina. Robert has made croquet videos with Australian croquet expert Kevin Brereton in which Robert teaches both basic and advanced break tactics. He has won the world championship 5 times: Fulford has also won the Presidents Cup eight times (1989, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2006, 2008 and 2009), the Open Championship nine times (1991, 1992, 1996, 1998, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008) and the Men's Championship three times (1990, 1998, 2006). Fulford playing style includes the ability to play a range of shots. His tactic of peeling an opponent's ball through hoop 1 makes a triple peel as hard as possible for the opponent. His sextuple peels are also more frequent than those of any other player. Robert Fulford uses an Irish grip and employs "casting" about three times before each shot. He has strong wrists which makes the Irish grip work for him without it causing the R.S.I. that the grip is sometimes blamed for. In fact, Robe... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=454463 ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Real tennis, often called "Royal Tennis"?one of several sports sometimes called the sport of Kings?is the original indoor racquet sport from which the modern game of lawn tennis, or tennis, is descended. It is also known as jeu de paume in France, "court tennis" in the United States, "Royal Tennis" in Australia. The term "real" was first used by journalists in the middle of the twentieth century to distinguish the ancient game from modern "lawn" tennis (even though that sport is seldom contested on lawns these days outside the few social-club-managed estates such as Wimbledon). There is no evidence that it is a corruption of the word 'royal' as some have indicated. Real tennis players often call the game "tennis", while continuing to refer to its more widely played offshoot as "lawn tennis". ... Read more
